  • Ronna McDaniel’s time at NBC was short. The former Republican National Committee chairwoman was hired as an on-air political commentator but released just days later after an on-air revolt by the network’s leading stars.
    Jim Rutenberg, a writer at large for The Times, discusses the saga and what it might reveal about the state of television news heading into the 2024 presidential race.
    Guest: Jim Rutenberg (www.nytimes.com/by/jim-rutenberg) , a writer at large for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Ms. McDaniel’s appointment had been immediately criticized (www.nytimes.com/2024/03/26/bu...) by reporters at the network and by viewers on social media.
    • The former Republican Party leader tried to downplay her role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. A review of the record shows she was involved in some key episodes (www.nytimes.com/2024/03/26/us...) .
    For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily (nytimes.com/thedaily?smid=pc-t...) . Transcripts of each episode will be made available by the next workday.

    We need accurate reporting, not 24 hours a day infotainment.

    This is so messed up.
    The idea that the truth is too expensive cannot be the conclusion of people in the journalism business

    Not a word about the shareholders and the role that they play in all of this. CBS famously said that Trump was terrible for news, but great for profits. (Or something along those lines.) It's not that Trump lies on TV it's that the rebuttal is so poor. You don't interview a sociopath, you debate and ridicule him with facts.

      Well said. We’re well into this election and I have yet to hear anyone question Trump on Ukraine or his nonexistent foreign policy, or even his economic policy. They just ask a vague question and let him rant. For example, the answer that this war wouldn’t have happened if I was in charge is not an answer, it’s unprovable speculation, and nobody has even broached the fact that Putin was preparing for the further invasion of Ukraine WHILE Trump was president and that Trump had already wrapped up Crimea in a nice bow for Putin when he did absolutely nothing about it.
      I have yet to see one single person press him on the whole slew of diplomatic efforts that completely exploded.

      Chuck Todd took no risk whatsoever. Nor did Rachel, or Lawrence, or Chris, or Joy, or Nicolle, or Joe, or Mika… even if NBC management weren’t a bunch of cowards, which everyone knew they were, the entire idiotic staff rose up and threw a collective tantrum.

    This was really interesting! I think my suggestion would be for networks to hire former Trump supporters, who can explain what it's like to be on the "inside" of Trump world AND who can share the things they now believe to be wrong with Trump world.

    So it's infotainment. Not informed reporting on facts or law. Can you imagine this approach from the press during the Vietnam War? If you don't report facts and strive for honesty, you are letting down your audience.

    It was badly handled by NBC and its on-air talent. I'm not a Trump supporter in any way, but this is a bad, bad look on NBC. It's the worst kind of intolerance. George Stephanopoulos was a presidential press communications director and no one at the network batted an eye when he's hired. James Carville, George Will, and Pat Buchanan have all been contributors and they are all highly partisan and that's okay. NBC does not have to put Trump on. I'm good with that. Really, really good with that. But extending that ban to everyone that has worked for him is too far.

    I’m a Reagan Republican and I’m not sure the two presenters here are any better in their fervent beliefs than the MAGA absolutists in theirs. Fact is, January 6 happened out of frustration that the irregularities were NOT being investigated. The whole certification process seemed rushed and deliberately not scrutinized to the standards we should expect of our elections or Congessional electors. Trump has a legitimate complaint in that regard, even though the outcome was obviously that Biden won. I voted for Trump twice, but hate him now with a passion; not because of Jan 6, but because of Ukraine. As long as no thorough investigation is done of that election, with a bipartisan commission, you are going to hear Trump and his followers whine about it being stolen. Fact is, there were irregularities.
    As for the press, I have to say that despite my no longer having a party or side to belong to, I still can never trust corporate news organizations again, like CNN or NBC, and I’d say the same for FOX or Newsmax. All of them, to this day, still “wear their partisan jerseys”. It’s nice to hear that CNN and NBC are making the attempt to reach across the divide, but there’s too much history there for me to consider starting to watch any of them. The future for me is on RUclips and for smaller outlets that aren’t so obviously peddling an agenda.

    • @charlesbonnet8057

      This is just another lie. The certification process was not rushed, it was quite normal except for the illegal actions that were going on behind the scenes trying to get people to not certify their states. There were over 60 court cases where judges, including judges appointed by President Trump and other Republican presidents, looked at the evidence in many cases and said there is not widespread fraud. If you say there were irregularities, I hope you have some evidence because no one has been able to prove irregularities.

    • @LeviDanielBarnes
      @LeviDanielBarnes 2 месяца назад +2

      I believe the irregularities were investigated over and over. I'm interested in exploring why we think differently if you're willing. Is there a particular "irregularity" that you thought didn't get enough attention?

    • @obriets
      @obriets 2 месяца назад

      Actually they weren’t. What was investigated in Congress ad nauseum was the role of Trump and his followers in the January 6 episode, but the actual electoral irregularities that brought these people to the Capitol in the first place were not officially investigated; and certainly the journalists investigating the irregularities cannot come close to lending the weight of an official commission appointed for the matter. Even the Jan 6 investigation was seriously one-sided the moment Liz Cheney, an avowed enemy of the man, was installed. Impartiality and credibility flew out the window.
      So let’s take one instance, among a number, but this one really troubled me. I saw video of women at the State Farm Arena at 11pm, way past the time the poll workers were legally allowed to be there, scanning and rescanning ballots. Why were they there? Why were the poll watchers dismissed? Why were they not prosecuted?

      @@obriets Hey, thanks for engaging. Too little of that lately.
      I'd love to look in depth at this Georgia example. Do you have a link to the video? Do you know if there was a hand recount in Georgia?

    • @obriets
      @obriets 2 месяца назад +1

      @@LeviDanielBarnes It all happened a while ago now and I don’t really remember the source, but I don’t think it’d be too hard to find. I’m actually surprised you didn’t see the video but not surprised as well being that the reportage on both sides of the aisle was so manipulative and one-sided.
      As for myself, I was appalled at how quickly things happened to certify the elections, and angry because it felt like a rushed coverup. Coupled with Trump going against 227 years of the tradition of Presidents handing over power respectfully and crying that the election was rigged, I can see how a large part of the population suspect that the election was not fair. I’ve come to terms with it and have moved on. I actually like Biden and will be voting for him in November. Ukraine is my primary motivator in this election, and although I think Putin has done a first rate job in getting Biden to self-deter and perform rather poorly on the subject, it’s still better by orders of magnitude than the outright puppet that is Trump. Also, money supply being the primary cause of inflation, one need only look at the dates on an M1 or M2 money supply graph to see who is actually responsible for the inflation we’ve been experiencing and who is not.
