We're tackling an 6ft modular trenchline system to wrap up our Lets Make Battlefield Basic Scenery Series. In this video, I share all my tips for creating the basic modular earthworks for our trenchline terrain project. This will set the foundations for adding all the various bunkers, fire pits, saps etc to make this an awesome wargaming trench terrain set.

One thing I've noticed, when working with foam, is to skip the edge template as you did it and cut out several of them out of wood and mount them on the edges for it Makes a better join part for things of this nature and less likely to have any divergance there.

Great tips on the PVA to MDF Mal cheers
TheTerrainTutor Hey Mal I have had a mind to do this for some time. Quick question ...How to work out the scale accurately..I want to do mine in 1:35 may involve armor eg Micheal Wittmans "Last Ride" is what I am going to call it. So as a min it will involve 3 - 4 1:35 scale tanks Tigers and at least one Sherman Firefly. So can you give me some idea how to work out the Terrain Scale etc..

Looking really good as always:) Great tip on the glue spots for fighting warping issues. Not sure that I will need trenches any time in the near future, but still worthwhile seeing. I have been working on learning to painting with acrylics the last few months to help with my general painting.

I feel like making the end caps 15 x 12 is a bit of a missed opportunity. If they were 15 x 15 you could use them as a corner piece between two lengths of trench. Though you would have to make a good three or so 6" peices to make the set work properly for different table lengths. So maybe it was the right call....
Table edge length was my priority, there's not many L shaped tables about tbh bud
What about using kinetic sand? Like, have slots to place the sand in and then shaping the trench like that, then trenches can be built then-and-there and they can all be made differently each game without having to have piles of massive foam blocks lying around?
Insulation is our go to material due to availability mate
That's a pretty good point, I hadn't considered that. Plus, I'd imagine the sand stuff would get pretty expensive very fast for anything large-scale.

Looks good! Realism wise it might be missing corners in the trench lines? We were always told to make corners and turns to our lines so the blast waves and shrapnel don't travel that far and there's no straight lines to shoot if the enemy storms it.
Yeah but functionally it wouldn't work due to the available space on the base

about a year ago i designed a board for Konflikt 47 that used a hill / bunker similar to this. The first 2 feet was flat, then 2ish feet of hills and bunkers and a large set of doors wide enough for a truck. the last 2 feet was all underground German Konflict Sci-Fi lair / underground bunker... I just was lacking the space to store the models when not in use. I see this excellent video and now I want to revisit that dream... I'll have to find storage space.. I can't wait for the rest of the series. Keep up the good work..

Very impressive i want to attempt a similar build. If you don't mind me asking roughly how much were the materials? It'd be good to know a starting point to budget for such a large project.
£15 for the foam, £12 of the MDF, £2 filler, £5 balsa wood, £3 das putty plus a couple of tester pots

TheTerrainTutor ideal, you will loved it! It's different to 40k in gameplay which is refreshing. It's fun on the 2D boards that come with the set, but with the advanced rules you can up your game on a 3D board. We gonna need to build a decent 3D necromunda board. Hint hint 😉

I've asked this kind of question in the past, but:
expanded polystyrene (even if it is a bit denser) doesn't seem to work well with sandpaper for me (at least what i'd normally use for hardboard or MDF bases).
What grade of sandpaper are you using, or is it jus tthe case that you are some kind of god with the sandpaper?
Ignore that, I paused the video too early (just before you explained the breaking of polystyrene) because I had a "Mel, I bet you haven't thought of this" moment. My bad!

What do you use the off cuts for? They are substantial pieces and surely could be reused on other bases or dioramas?
And if you don't want them I will happily have them.

Iv'e been dreaming of an A4 modular mine/cave system for western, PostApoc and fantasy gaming. What would I need to factor in for the minimum width and comfortable width of the tunnels

Is this a WW2 trench or a WH40K type one or both ?
Kinda both mate, it's more about the trench techniques than the specific setting
I think it looks more like a ww1 trench because their are more static warfare weapons unlike the more mobile weapons common for ww2

I always enjoy your videos and your builds. You have done bunkers and log bunkers. But have you ever thought to do different types of military defensive positions ie foxholes yet? From the single soldier laying foxhole to the different style of standing foxholes like the 2 man position, the heavy machinegun position, etc. Including the ones that have a grenade pit within the foxhole so the grenade explodes upward and away. Like these

i havent gotten the chance to see them all yet. I did see some a year ago and forgot some of the comment ideas I and others offered to new model builders. And I figured since I have a big upcoming project soon I wanted to go back and see what comments I made to help others and refresh my own thoughts or ideas I may have forgotten and was going back over the posts I made over a yr ago to save into Word and add any new ideas to my old list of techniques notebook Ive done in the past.
But I have seen them a while ago but didnt remember everything so going back over to watch them again.
Keep doing great work its always good to help others who are just learning or getting back into it and have forgotten some techniques.
