    Additions & Corrections
    - You get an additional bomb slot every time you die, up to the maximum of each doll (Shotia 6 - Leinyan 4 - Exy 2). But if you die *while* hypering, you don't get a new bomb slot. So you need to die outside of hyper to get your full bombs.
    - Hypering increases and dying decreases the dynamic difficulty of the game, known as rank. Don't worry too much about this, just keep in mind that this is what's causing the fluctuation in bullet patterns.
    - Each stage has 10 hidden bees that you unlock by shooting at them with the *tip* of your laser. So just moving into them while lasering isn't enough, you have to shoot straight at the bees to uncover them. (Thanks for reminding that this isn't obvious @bpelectric)
    - Contrary to what I say at 6:08, you *don't* get a bee perfect stage if you die before picking up the first bee. (Thanks for the correction @jujukenobi7801)
    - Both White Label and Black Label ask you whether you want to continue to the second loop, not only Black Label.

    LOVE this video! I recently reviewed this new M2 release for Eurogamer. Lot of people there in in my social media keen to embrace the game, but intimidated. I just added a link to this video as a comment at the end if my review on Eurogamer (and where else I've shared it). Should really help those new players. And I love the gentle, encouraging energy along with the great insight!

      @@hazylevels I appreciate your video! And the kind words about my review. And yeah... great that Eurogamer are so open to covering shmups and import and arcade and so on. In fact, I'm noticing a little trend across the games media... in the last year I've managed to contribute shmup pieces to Eurogamer, Edge, PC Gamer, Retro Gamer, Nintendo Life etc. Never used to be that much capacity to cover the genre (or interest from commissions editors). Nice video. Pretty much got all the information people are looking for when they start playing the game.
    Just a little mistake, at 6:08, if you die before the first bee, it's not gonna work. To fulfill the bee condition for the 2nd loop, you need to have at least 3 "bee-perfect" stages, meaning getting the "2x" multiplier on the last bee at least 3 times. And you don't get it if you die before the first bee.
    I did some testing (suicide before the first bee in 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3 then deaths on 1-4 boss and 1-5 boss, and enough bombs to not fulfill the bomb condition and did not get into the second loop). Really unlikely that it ever happens to someone in a run though ^^

    Hello. You seem like a great person for this question. I'm in the early stages of designing a full stack web application focusing on everything about Shmups. • @hazylevels

      @@hazylevels All encompassing is the goal. I plan to first build out a more robust and up-to-date database. I'd like for it to be a one stop shop for anyone interested in shmups. Community rankings, scores, forum, blog w/ comments, history of the genre, developer interviews, music, etc. It's a fairly large project and I'll be working on it full time after I finish up my current project in the next few days. Any ideas for additional features or general advice are greatly appreciated.

      Wow, it does sound like a pretty big undertaking! I think something like Glitchwave is pretty good feature-wise, but for shmups it would also be nice to be able to log detailed clear information (1-all or 2-all, score, ship type etc) as a kind of a personal "shmup diary", since that's a big part of the genre. one thing that threw me off when I started and I haven't found in any of the guides (had to figure it out for myself): You can't just have your laser going and fly it over a spot with a bee. You have to wait to activate the laser until you're already lined up with the spot the bee will appear, or nothing happens.

      Black Label is on the main menu, it's the option between Arrange S and Game Manual. When it asks if you want the new or old version, choose new for Black Label. You'll know it's the right one if you get a title screen with a black background.
      Btw, very cool that you picked this as your first bullet hell game, but just be aware that it's considered very hard. So it's totally normal if the game seems impossible at first 🤠 super easy, arrange s/l and arcade challenge mode are there to easy you in.

      @@hazylevels Thanks for the reply! Been steadily going through all your beginner guides, been very helpful. After some save state grinding, I can beat the first level without dying *most* of the time, and the second level without dying maybe haaalf the time. I realize it's about to ramp up immensely, but I do feel like I'm making progress! I have played a bunch of other shmups in the past (Sine Mora, Jamestown, Drainus, 1940, bunch of indie stuff, a tiny bit of Ikaruga) just never anything that I think would be dubbed true "bullet hell."
      Is there a "right" version I should be playing, though? I've just been on White Label with A Exy, should I just continue with that?
      Also, to get myself comfortable with dodging, I haven't really been using bombs or hypers too much...should I reconsider this approach? Or does it makes sense until I get to the harder levels?

    • @hazylevels
      @hazylevels  Год назад +1

      Nice! Being familiar with shmups in general is definitely a huge help, even if bullet hell has its own distinct flavor.
      As long as you're enjoying the game, I don't think there is a "wrong" way to play it, and your skills will carry over to other lables and ship types. But if you want my recommendation, I'd say play Black Label. Not only is it slightly more approachable, I think all of the changes in it make Daioujou a better game. The game's director Tsuneki Ikeda has even said in an interview that it was conceived as a an ideal version of the game. I think nowadays it would've just been a balance patch, but in the arcade days it wasn't so simple to just patch stuff.
      For ships, I think B-Exy is easier for beginners. You lose some speed, but gain a very wide shot. But the difference between A and B is more of a preference, as some people just prefer (and do better at) faster ships. If the game gets too overwhelming in the later stages, you can always play B-Shotia, who has a bad laser but retains the super wide shot + you get lots of extra bombs. But Exy is better and much more fun to play once you have a grip on the game.
      Definitely use your bombs, I'd say even plan them for the sections that give you the most trouble. With Exy, you'll have to do a lot of bombless dodging anyway :) Hypers are a little trickier, because it can like feel the game just becomes way harder when using them, but they make some sections a lot easier (because enemies die faster) and you can use that initial bullet canceling and short invincibility to get out an undodgeable situation. So yes, use the hypers too, but just be aware that it may take a while to understand how to get the most out of them. Also, you don't that extra bomb slot if you die while hypering, but with Exy you only have to think about that once.@@mtthwfreeman

I had a difficult time finding out what the differences are when researching it so I'm really clueless here

    • @hazylevels
      @hazylevels  4 месяца назад

      You're not the first one to be confused by the series naming conventions... Resurrection (also known as Daifukkatsu, 2008) is a sequel to Blissful Death (also known as Daioujou, 2002). So they are two separate games. If you're looking for your first DDP game to try out, Resurrection is a great choice. It's more approachable and has one of the best novice modes around. Personally I like Blissful Death (the one I cover in this video) more, but it assumes more experience with the genre. Can't go wrong with either of the two. Hope this helps!

    • @hazylevels
      @hazylevels  Год назад +1

      The second boss is a tough one, there's just no going around all the micrododging you need to do. I'd say just bomb the patterns that give you the most trouble (or if you have a hyper, use the brief invulnerability you get to point-blank the boss with your hyper for extra damage, pull down on the screen, and bomb before the bullets hit you). For me, it's still scary every time and the last pattern is a nightmare on White Label. But it does get easier with time, so don't worry too much if you can't get it consistent right away.

    • @hazylevels
      @hazylevels  Год назад

      The main point is to not worry about it too much. If you hyper a lot and never bomb or die, then yes, the game will get tougher. But it's not a thing that needs to be managed all the time and it shouldn't discourage hyper use. Just keep an eye on the rank display from time to time and bomb out of hyper when it starts to get scary.

    Ive been working on DOJ Black Label for a few weeks and I’m getting discouraged. Sometimes I can make it to stage 4 in a run without taking a death, but it seems that as soon as I start to think I’m having a good run, I get smoked. Do you have any pointers for the mental side of the game?

    • @hazylevels
      @hazylevels  11 месяцев назад

      If you can get through stages 1 to 3 without dying but lose your run after that, I'd suggest making a save at the start of stage 4 and just try to make it to the end from there for a while. The more you familiarize yourself with the later stages, the more confident you will be in your full runs 💪 And secondly, take breaks and maybe play something else for a while if DOJ starts to get too stressful. I find myself making more progress (and enjoying myself more) when I haven't played for a while instead of just banging my head against the challenge.
