Hello LOST Fans!
Welcome to "LOST On The Couch", a weekly (for now...) reaction series to the hit 2004 ABC TV show LOST. I (David) have seen the show 7ish times all the way through and my friends (Audrey, Hassan, and Zola) have never seen it before!
I have always wanted to show my friends the experience that is LOST, so I decided I'd stick a camera in their faces and see what they thought of it! I also, with their permission, want to share it with whoever might be interested in watching it again through their eyes. After all, that is the closest us Losties can ever get to watching it again for the first time. ;)
I'm actually a musician and composer, NOT a video editor, so don't expect too much fancy editing, but I very much enjoy this as a hobby.
I sincerely hope you all enjoy these as much as I enjoy making them! Reach out to me in the comments if you have any suggestions, hopes, dreams, theories, advice, whatever. But NO SPOILERS!

It's interesting to see people analyze this show in a post-Game of Thrones era. Back in 2004 when LOST came out, no other shows were quite like it, and it set the standard for not just how mystery shows are done, but a lot of the visual language that it set up were eventually used in other great shows. Like how Citizen Kane showed people cinematic techniques that are still used today, LOST showed how mythological stories can be planned and told through multi-season arcs on _network television_ when most of this stuff was only possible on cable, and even there it was rare. This show was 4 years before Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, and it was the first to pull off regular insane twists in television that so many other shows today are incorporating. This show changed the culture of storytelling on TV, and that is no small feat.
Take the kidnapping of Walt for instance, not a lot of people knew the Others were after Walt at the time. Of course, there's always a fringe minority but most people really felt they were after the baby, because this show existed before the internet culture fandom was what it is today. Podcasts didn't exist, RUclips, Reddit and Twitter didn't exist, and Facebook was brand new. It was a different world, and with it, a different consciousness. So when groups like yours make these wild guesses about the show, they're doing it in an era and a culture where 'crazy twists' have become the norm. It's interesting how pop culture has changed.

This is the smartest post-season 1 discussion among all of the LOST reactors on YT. All of you are so smart. Captain David is the professor and leader who assembled this A-team. Doctor Hassan is the crafty trickster and reformed evil mastermind. Madam Audrey is the super clever blonde and breakout star who makes this group cool. Agent Zola is my favorite bc she is the heart and the brilliant genius who saves you all in the final act. 😂 Great season you guys! Well done! Thank you.

This was one of my most favorite reactions from you guys. I love the interaction and theories. When I first saw the scene when Walt was kidnapped by The Others I jaws dropped for 10 minutes. It was so shocking. 🤣

- The first visual appearance of the monster is as awesome as the first time I watched it
- Jin and Michael's friendship is one of my favorite friendships on the show, they have such great development over the first season
- The sequence where Hurley tries to get to the flight is so stressful because you know he's gonna make it but you don't want him to

- The Jack vs Locke dynamic is so good, especially in this episode
- At first when I heard the beep of the radar, I thought it was the bleeping out of someone swearing
- It's so sad watching this and seeing how happy they are when the boat comes back and knowing what happens next

The brilliance of the man of science/faith is that neither of them are right or wrong. For all the stuff in this show that is apart of a whole grand scheme of destiny, there's as much stuff that's just a bunch of coincidences.

The way how "others" knew that Walt is on the raft is prbly just because others are always keeping eyes on them and watching every step what are they doing and sharing info with each other. Some of them had heard whispering in the jungle so they know that these others moving around of them. Others prolly saw that Walt was leaving with the raft and they prolly also saw which way the raft went when they launched it so they can send their boat to that way also. I dont think there is smth magical behind it. But thats just my opinion.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the theory that EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the island including The Others are simply people who just got stranded there and all that is happening is the THE ISLAND is commanding people that arrive there what to do and how to think; and possibly it's doing all these things to show them a way to leave the island - it's this greater power (metaphor for any belief system) that shows how human beings will do anything in pursuit of order and salvation - in this case "finding rescue".
That every single character including The Others are LOST and the island is just the guiding light telling them what to do to save themselves, with only some few characters like Jack, Kate etc. resisting that greater call... AMAZING THEORY!

Someone once said that sound of the monster sounds like that machine on a New York taxi cab, maybe that's why Rose said in the pilot when the monster sound first appeared " that noise sounds familiar.."

I've counted 9 situations until this episode. Including the plane crash and even one inside the plane before crash.

I wish I could have gone to a LOST con, but I did manage to go on the tour in Hawaii and attend both of the LA concerts. LOSTies unite! Juliet is also pretty high on my list 👍🏻

I'm just asking because one common complaint is from people who say that they only watched the show, because they wanted to find out what the monster is or why there are polar bears... and I'm not buying that.
@@kuhpunkt oh, I see. It wouldn't be LOST without the characters. I mean, they could've just written in generic, stereotypical characters A - Z, and made the show entirely about the mystery island. That show would suck. The characters they gave us are great and written with compassion. They get to grow and learn, and us along with them.
Pretty much every aspect of the show is terrific. Writing, acting, music, cinematography, etc etc. We get it all with LOST.
The characters are what carry the mysteries. The mysteries only matter to us because they matter to the characters. Take the characters away, you're left with a bunch of mysteries that ultimately don't matter. Could you imagine the show with all of the same characters? All Shannon type? All Jack type? All Lock type? This show needs a well diversified character set to make it what it is. I'm glad they gave it what it needed.
As far as Jack vs Locke though. Team Locke. 😜
(Don't get me wrong, I love Jack, and we need him to counter Locke)
Did they all notice that Kate DID NOT put down her pack when the black smoke came after them? Even though she thought the dynamite? If Jack hadn't switched on her, she would have blown them up.

Yeah, watching this in May 2005, I was on Jack’s side. “Locke’s crazy and he’s going to be a problem. Even if he is getting prophetic visions, who is sending those visions? What’s their agenda? Who says they’re good? Evil can send visions too. Saying it’s the island is a cop-out.”
Yeah, it’s so cool to see where different people land on that debate. I was team Locke in 2005, but I think I lean a bit more towards Jack now. You’re right, could be evil sending visions!
I really love your discussions. You make great theorys about the show.
I am thinking right now, who my favourite characters after the first season were. That is quite hard, because my over all Top characters come in season 2 and 4. Also all of them change so much. Sun or Michael are great in season 1 but worse later.
Right now I would say Boone, Sun, Sayid, Hurley and John.
But none of them are in my top 5 of the whole series.^^
Is Hassan gunna be okay in later seasons? 😅 Something he said during the post discussion reminds me that apparently a lot of people jumped ship because the show went "that" way later on.

After the show ends, I really hope you guys 'go back' this discussion with your theories and viewpoints, to see what was wrong vs. what was right...and since ONLY DAVID is supposed to read the comments...SPOILERS...loved the observation about Locke, Walt and Hurley having some kind of connection...you'll need to be sure to show them the epilogue/New Man in Charge

How is Lock responisble for Boone's death exactly? He had a vision of him being bloody, and thats all. He could have told him about the vision, sure.. But would it change anything? When the plane was tilting, Lock yelled at Boone to get out of the plane, he was trying to save him. And Boone decided to turn back to answer the radio, so even if he knew about the vision having that only chance to communicate with somebody, he would have done the same in my opinion. And also I don't understand why Lock told Jack it was a sacrifice, instead of telling him it was an accident, but maybe it was meant to be. Its like he wants to be the "murderer". Anyways you guys are awesome, really like this group!

And also to be fair whats the difference between falling from a cliff, or falling from a cliff in a plane? Jack saying that he would have treated him differently if Lock didn't "lie" makes no sense. They had no equipements to do anything against internal bleeding that was the main problem which was caused by the impact damage.

@@matyinagy2045 The difference is something heavy fall on to his leg and crushed it, so it's squezed in between two hard surfaces. It doesn't happen when you just fall from a cliff, because there is nothing on the other side of the impact point of your leg when your leg hits somewhere as you fall.

The only reason anyone would side with John Locke is because they know they are watching a TV show with magical elements, and themes about destiny and fate. Even owing to the fact that what he said about this island is true -- that there are black smoke monsters, and pirate ships and polar bears, and that they survived a plane crash with only superficial injuries -- it doesn't mean that his path is the right path. Faith is inherently irrational, and should the sacrifices that comes with faith lead to some sort of solution, that person would use it to justify every unnecessary negative that they helped cause.
example: There's two cars. One car - a guy is distracted playing on his cellphone. The second car - an abusive husband and his wife. The guy on the cellphone crashes into them and kills the husband. Was playing on his cellphone the moral thing to do? Bad methods can sometimes lead to positive outcomes. A broken clock is right twice a day.
And if you dreamt about hitting this exact guy the night before knowing a personal detail about his life that you would have no way to guess? wouldn't you change your mind about faith? That's pretty much what happened to Locke in "deus ex machina"
Question for them before they watch S2 E1: Which storyline are you most interested in? The aftermath of the raft explosion, or what's in the hatch?

So, Jack 1, Monster 0 (ok Kate threw the thing, but everyone except Jack freezed, it's a hit!). Now let's keep the counter ready for anyone who'll go against it and survive.
And this episode answers the debate on ep1: would you stay on the island or build a raft? Next debate on the channel: Science or Faith?
To believe in destiny is to disbelieve in our free will. If everything has already been decided, why seek to discover the secrets of the Island? Because anyway, they will come to us whether we want it or not. This is why I am in the Jack team and not in the Locke team. Sacrifices like Boone only make them objects and we are not objects.
It's not really that easy , there is the Spinozist determinism but also the Leibnizian destiny which doesn't exlcude free will

@@qwertymanor I wouldn't say "for no reason". Every character in this show reacts to things in certain ways based on what they have experienced in the past during their flashbacks. And Locke saying "Boone was a sacrifice the island demanded" would rub me the wrong way as well. I would think that he is crazy
