      Apparently George Miller's favorite version is a black/white/chrome version of the movie that I would love to see as well. It be interesting so see how different it would be without the colors you mentioned.

      Why do i disagree? I don’t get the hype around this movie, i heard so much about it and finally watched it this evening (i had not seen any of the movies of this franchise). And i was very disappointed.
      There was so much grotesque and violence which i failed to find a sense and purpose for. If there is some kind of allegory for me it got buried under the gore and the vulgarity of some scenes.
      Like why do they believe in Valhalla, and i almost laughed out loud when he said « McFeasting ». Alongside that i had heard that Furiosa had this deep sad story but i wasn’t really moved when it was uncovered as she barely had any lines and we just saw her fighting for 1h.
      I don’t know maybe i’m just not the type for enjoying this kind of violence in movies!

      @@smiley122688 Fury Road was not that violent (Its my personal experience tho). It's shortage of dialogue is amazing. The amount of visual storytelling george miller did in this movie is amazing. Every shot in this film says a thousand words. Immortal Joe is like a god to them. He made the war boys believe in valhalla. It works like a cult of some sort. The movie had a simple story to tell but not a dumb one. It's perfect. Even the action sequences is crafted in such a way that we can understand the world they are currently in right now. I respect your opinion. In my opinion this movie is a masterfully handcrafted piece of art that uses practical effects and CGI together perfectly and gives us an extreme Cinematic experience

      @@sydneygoodman3725 It was nice to read your perspective. I can’t deny that if the movie leaves that impression to so many people it has to be a good one. Actually, i also recall enjoying a couple of scenes very much, but i guess it was just not my type of storytelling. Regarding the violence to me the perfect balance i have found in a movie must have been in The Revenant, or The Hateful Eight! I don’t know if you have seen these ones.

    This is an action movie for filmmakers. Only filmmakers and film enthusiasts will understand the balls it took to make this movie. To a regular movie goer it will look like just another action film, a pretty weird one at that. To action movie enthusiasts it will look like a good action movie. To filmmakers it's brilliant. It goes against so many of the cliches that have been plaguing the genre in recent times, while embracing the cliches that made action movies great in the eighties and early nineties. All that plus godlike cinematography.

    Fury Road's "breaking point moment" (coined by Chris in "The Problem with Action Movies Today" video): Max hanging upside down on the side of the War Rig as Furiosa struggles to keep hold of his foot after getting stabbed on the ribs. Immortan Joe passes by with one of the wives already captured, and leads his biggest trucks to trap the rig on all four sides. The music dramatically swells up to reflect this hopeless situation. Meanwhile, Slit sneaks inside the trap with the Interceptor and speeds up to ram Max.
    With the sudden change of music, the turning point comes when Furiosa rams the Interceptor into the Gas Town leader's truck, killing Slit. Nux, after fixing one of the engines, then emerges from underneath the rig and pushes Max towards said truck. Max grabs onto the vehicle, hijacks it, then speeds up to free the rig from the trap. With two gigantic vehicles in our heroes' possession, the battle rages on.

    I see a lot of arguments that Mad Max can't be a feminist movie because the female characters have to rely on a man. They clearly don't understand what feminism means because they think it's just about showcasing "bad-ass" women and putting the focus on them and BLAM now you can market to the female gender. That is not how feminism in movies work. They work when they show women and men as equal beings whose quality of character can be identified with by any member of the audience. Women in "feminist" movies can cry, show weakness, die, and *gasp* rely on a man. And I know this works in Fury Road because I don't see Max and a truck full of women, I see a group of people trying to survive.

    • @WhatIsMisophonia
      @WhatIsMisophonia 7 лет назад +1

      I liked the movie well enough, though I can certainly understand some criticisms about it supporting the rather stereotypical gender roles of "women are innocent and men are monsters who have to prove their innocents and desire to protect women". What I didn't like was how Furiosa felt it necessary to rescue the most protected and pampered people in the whole show while not trying to help any of the bloodbags who were also being farmed and treated far far worse than anyone else. It did rather give the impression of men vs women with only one good guy in the whole show(2 if you count the bad guy who became good later).

    • @HorseLover161298
      @HorseLover161298 6 лет назад +11

      WhatIsMisophonia Those women were not pampered. They were sex slaves. Nothing about their situation was comfortable, or good. They deserved to get out as much as anyone who didn’t want to serve under Immortan Joe’s tyranny.
      How could Furiosa have rescued the blood bags? They’re constantly tired and would be in no shape to travel, cause, y’know, they’re being used as blood bags.
      Furiosa rescued the harem because she was close to them, she could trust them, it was an incredibly difficult thing to get those girls out and she couldn’t risk bringing anyone else who could potentially betray her for Immortan Joe’s favour. Furthermore, bloodbags are male as far as we see, and where Furiosa was trying to get to, her old clan, was only women, and would only have taken in women, because they were all they could trust.

    I really liked the new Mad Max my only complaint is that it wasn't Australian enough.

  • @IVIaskerade
    @IVIaskerade 9 лет назад +44

    I honestly wasn't that enamoured with it.
    It was a decent action film, yes, but it didn't feel like a _Mad Max_ film, it felt like an action film with Max in it. Scratch that, it felt like a 2-hour battle scene with Max in it. Not that that's a bad thing, but I was a bit disappointed about it.
    It was more about Furiosa's journey than Max's, and unlike the Road Warrior which it was most similar to, it ended without a sense of closure - sure, Max leaves as he always does, but in RW he's driving off into the sunset, not just melting into the crowd. The other films also felt quite bleak at the end - sure, Max survived, but he's survived to go on driving thoughout the harsh wasteland that is post-apocalyptic Australia. This film ends with _literally every problem_ in the wasteland being fixed. Gas town and the bullet farm? Forces decimated. The citadel rulers? Gone. The war boys? No resistance at all (seriously. You turn up with the body of their leader, and apparently a warrior cult that worships that person isn't even a problem?). The rabble? All sorted, no need to worry about them, water for everyone! The citadel? Oh, that's got new rulers, and they're all perfect. It just felt a little too contrived.
    There was also the girls. They looked great - but that's the problem. When you've been involved in a 24-hour chase in a dirty, grimy, greasy truck, with explosions, fire, and _fucking orange_ sand flying every which way, you do _not_ look like you're in the desert for a modelling shoot and acidentally wandered into the fight.
    I thought there were too many cuts during the action sequences (the film averages something like 20 a minute which is just ridiculous), and the film seemed a bit too... orange (?) for what I think of when I hear "Mad Max". The colours were too vivid, as opposed to the washed-out look that the other films had. Oh, and whoever authorised there to be a Glock in the film should be taken out the back and shot with a Luger. It just didn't fit. Extended mag 1911, Tec 9, whatever. Just not a glock - it's too modern and too clean.
    All in all, I found that it hit most of the criticisms of "the problem with action films today" - you talk about a film "always moving forwards" but an important part of that is having pauses in the action after particularly intense sequences where the hero can get back on their feet. Fury Road has these, but they're too far apart. I didn't find Max all that relatable here because he has no reason to do anything, he's just going along with others. The villain also wasn't too great. He seems like he _could_ be interesting, but has virtually no development and you don't know anything about him beyond "rules the citadel". The stunts were great, I'll give you that, but I never actually felt that Max was in danger during the film - he had moments where he had to fight, but he wasn't vulnerable. There was also no "breaking point moment" for Max.
    Don't get me wrong. I _really_ enjoyed watching it, and it's one of my favourite films to come out this year. I'm definitely going to pick up a copy when it's relased on DVD. It was a great action film. It just wasn't a great Mad Max film.

    • @Lightscribe225
      @Lightscribe225 9 лет назад +22

      IVIaskerade From what I've seen that's what the other Mad Max films were. Mad Max showing up to a place things are happening, he just wants to pass through but inevitably has to help to do so, then leaving. For better or for worse. Remember the ending to Road Warrior and Thunderdome, especially Thunderdome. It is very similar. But where those ended with someone else telling the story of Mad Max and his quiet exit, they just show it as he disappears into the crowd. It only feels different this time around because instead of there being whole tribes, Max is helping only a handful of women. The formula however is still the same. He tags along, helps where he can, then leaves when its resolved.
      A lot of what you needed to know was done without saying it, something most action movies forget. Where a film made by Micheal Bay treat you like an imbecile and explain everything in long painful monologues, exposition, or flashback, George Miller lets you figure it out from the context. Max at this point is a broken man, as reflected in the shoddy state of his car, and his disheveled appearance in the movie; and haunted by the constant hallucinations of the dead that flash in his mind. It even impedes on his ability at least once as you may have caught during the climax.
      You say he has no reason to do anything but he does. In the beginning it's to get away from the war boys that use him as a giant IV. Then it's to get his stuff back, but just him against an entire warband is something even his broken mind can see won't work.
      Immortan Joe was another case of development being seen not heard. Shown as sickly and needing a mask for a clean source of air, you learn plenty about him in the first 15 minutes of the movie. The cult he has built around himself, the constant need for literal new blood to keep his followers alive, the state of those who beg for his water, and his harvesting of milk. That tells you right there he is intent on rebuilding a world with the strong, taking those that are young, fit, and little to no mutation, keeping them alive as best he can in a world that has none of the conveniences of today. Then you see his wives and their various states of pregnancy and how he is focused on getting the kids back. That is all you need for development. You can figure it out that he is near death and he wants to have at least one healthy heir before he expires. All he has right now is a midget whose limbs have atrophied and a musclehead who clearly has the strength but not the brains to rule.
      You say he wasn't vulnerable yet you forget his most vulnerable moment, being stuck as a hood ornament on a car, his life in the hands of a maniac determined to find a glorious death. Or during the climax when he was either outmanned, outgunned, or outclassed by any of the three warbands at any time. I'd go into more detail but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched it. Just remember when he points at that guy and says "That's mine!", or the Doof Wagon part...

      IVIaskerade I love the movie because George Miller has been working on this world for over 40 years and never had full budget or technology to make his dream movie come true. This feels like the movie he always wanted to make. He enriches his universe and keeps the mystery alive, something George Lucas couldn't. He takes focus away from Mad Max for more interesting characters. I watched all three Mad Maxes before seeing the fourth one in one day, and I have to say the first one never gives a great feeling of a post apocalyptic world. The second one does more of that but the scale is too low for me to believe in it more. The third one took the scale and flipped it upside down so you can't take anything serious. This one is perfect because you see George Miller's vision crystal clear, that's what I love about it.

      IVIaskerade
      1. The movie is supposed to be a stand alone film. Road Worrier is very different from the original Mad Max. Beyond Thunderdome is REALLY different from the previous. I still thought it was a lot like a mad max film. Keep in mind in Road Warrior Max had under 20 lines of dialogue. His character arch is played visually in both films; it is the basics of the medium, after all. So Max having little dialogue was intentional because his arch was visual, while Furiosa had a more dialogue driven arch. The little dialogue seemed like both an homage as well as keeping in line with the Max character (while also sticking to showing, not telling.)
      2. The movie was also played out in a fairy tale like tone. It had a lot of themes of a fairy tale as well. I.e the wise sages (who are good at shooting people) the silent cowboy-esque character, the oppressing villain who people look up to, the rebels who free the oppressed people, the rebel who gets crowned leader for his/her good deeds. It's very basic and yet done in such a fleshed out way, I think.

      IVIaskerade I felt the same way. Spoilers ahead, stop reading now, if necessary. When Nux just completely switches sides after his complete and total religious devotion to Immortan Joe and their cause, it just felt so contrived to me. Nux was basically a foiled suicide bomber. I just don't picture religious extremists changing sides so quickly and easily. Also, I didn't like the choice of all the flamethrowers and flames shooting from the guitar. I agree with Chris that they look cool but it just seemed unrealistic to me where gas is such short supply that you would waste it like that. But I think I am in the minority here and there is an audience for this movie for sure, it's just not me.

    • @IVIaskerade
      @IVIaskerade 9 лет назад

      OrigMedia I think the gas shortage has been sorted in Fury Road, at least for Immortan Joe, by the alliance with Gas Town.
      The flamethrowers, too, are consistent with this. One of the ways wealth has historically been displayed was to waste something valuable, implying you had so much power that the struggles of everyone else don't apply to you. That, and a bunch of over-excitable war boys would be _bound_ to shoot their loads too early (pun intended).

      Alex Rosendall massive amount of CGI? are you kidding me? 80% of this movie is practical! and CGI is a great thing, actually. without CGI we would never saw "real" dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, or creepy T-1000 from Terminator 2. the problem is, in our days movie makers rely on CGI VERY heavily! Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 popularized CGI, but there is huge difference between those two movies and tons of shitty modern movies when it comes to visual effects...and that difference is the presence of the practical effects! real set, real props, real explosions, real stunts! but there is scenes like that sandstorm from Fury Road, when you can't do it without CGI. this movie is a good example of combination practical effects and CGI!

Having Hugh Keays-Byrne back to play the villain was an epic move. I also liked how Theron's character is actually the drive of the movie and Max is just along for the ride. Miller's good at breaking rules too, which is always refreshing. The way he makes the audience think there may be romantic links with characters, then going "Nope!" is great. I hope he makes another Max movie, but honestly, I really don't think he can top this one.

      charon7111 Pssh, Star Wars: Legend Of Korra is gonna be just as bland and underwhelming as the Star Trek rehashes; banking on NOSTALGIAAAAA to make up for a rushed/boring/generic character development and flashy yet still Hollywood typical action sequences. I really don't know why everyone is so excited for that movie other than it having the Star Wars name on it.

      That is true, but not the reason I think this movie is overrated. I'm sorry, but I did not like this movie... I have seen all the Mad Max movies, and I thought they were OK (except the third one), and I thought this movie also was mediocre. Yeah, on a technical aspect this movie is great, I won't deny that, and everything is just insane. The movie tries to get emotional, but I never really felt that I should care. Yeah, some things are sad for some characters, but I never felt emotion. I think I would have enjoyed the movie much more if they did not try to make us care so much. Don't get me wrong; I think the action is great, but the danger for the characters the filmmakers wanted to create just... wasn't there. That is my opinion, so hate me, I stand by my decision.

      @@veloc.raptor9136 I haven't seen the movie since my comment, but from what I remember the movie tried to be too serious at times. Some of my favourite action movies are Crank and T2. Those are perfect examples for my argument; Crank tries to be just insane, and T2 is an action movie with heart. MM:FR tried to be both, and it didn't mash together well. The action sequences are great, and when it is pure insanity (that guy with the flaming guitar though!) it is amazing, but about half the time the movie tried to have an actual story with characters, which was really out of place.

    • @ozbrizzie8869

      There was so much story in this movie. Just because it wasn’t in words doesn’t mean it wasn’t there; blind following of ideology, cult figures that are powerful and keep their subjects suppressed or willingly follow them, Overcoming disability, suppression of women, empowering of women, working together to survive, damaging the environment, survival of the fittest, and the story threads go on and on.

    • @j.kwiatkowski6682
      @j.kwiatkowski6682 9 лет назад +29

      The Raid and it's sequel we're pretty great in one department and one department only, that being action. They pulled off the craziest stunts with some fantastic camera work, which was truly exceptional. However what makes Fury Road a better film is the human characters and emotion. In the Raid, you're sent immediately into the action with barely knowing anybody and little to no character development. The Raid had action as it's forefront; while Fury Road blended action and emotion together.

    • @frankopanklaric
      @frankopanklaric 9 лет назад +1

      Jacob Kwiatkowski "In the Raid, you're sent immediately into the action with barely knowing anybody and little to no character development." Well yeah, it's an action movie. It doesn't bog you down to please a demographic.
      And there was NO cgi in the second movie. And btw If they are going to name a movie "Mad Max" then maybe I don't know... actually make Max do something. Didn't they have the courage to give Charlize her own IP. Doesn't she deserve it? She does. Why do they have to make her piggy back off of the Max name IP. I actually hope they rename this movie like they did with edge of tomorrow.
