When I was in high school many years ago I got my start at fish keeping. I caught some wild minnows and put them in a big aquarium that my teacher had given me. They took to it like it was nothing. They were living the life. Food, filtration, you name it I gave it to them. Thanks for sharing and bringing back memories from my childhood. Your tank is absolutely gorgeous.
I have a bass in a 55 gallon tank and its been in it for about a year or possibly a bit longer. It stays so clean its amazing. I rarely do water changes, I have only done like 5 gallon changes maybe 4 times in over a year. I test the water for ammonia and all and its just super clean when I do. I'm really amazed how clean it stays. I have a 30 gallon tank I keep feeder fish in like goldfish and minnows and I'm always having to clean and do water changes in it but the bass tank I don't. I just got a 120 gallon tank I'm resealing and going to set it up for the bass. He is a eating machine. He can eat up to 10 minnows at a time if I put that many in but its pretty much to much for him but he would do it just like a dog would eat a 2 lb steak if he could. In fact a bass reminds me so much of my dogs its funny. He gets all excited when I walk in the room and will come out of hiding and watch me and start working his mouth like he knows he is going to eat. Cool set up you have for sure I will be setting mine up similar to yours one its complete.
Tank looks nice. I kept a female about 20 years ago in a 7'Lx2W'x2'Tall Oceanic 200 gallon tank. Ate anything from hard kibble type dog food (some of my friends fed her that when I wasn't there) to live rats/bullfrogs. It grew from 4lbs.10oz. up to 7lbs 4oz. Tame enough to hand feed from the wild in 7-10 days or less. Extremely Smart Fish. Most people don't give them enough credit on their intelligence.
Thats for posting the vid. Thats one of the nicest bass tanks I have seen on youtube and it really reflects your passion for the fish. If you kept discus (mentioned in your vid), you definitely know what you are doing!
I always thought that SMB would fit fine in a 125 gallon tank. Then I saw what a 4# one looks like. Stronger and faster than most similar sized fish in the aquarium hobby that would be ok in a 125 gallon. These things truly become BEASTS.
Rad. I was just thinking about doing this. I have an 80 gallon tank. I love the idea of putting them back, when they get too big, and catching more. Get to fish more, and keep your tank ever changing. And they all get to live their lives out.
Just caught about a 7-8 inch bass and put him in my 55 gallon. Once he grows a bit with my other fish, I'll get the 155 gallon set up for him. They really do make great pets and although it may be illegal, no one is going to bust your door down for keeping a bass. Keep it up man, that aquarium looks dope
Buddy, if you took half a second to look at my photo, you'd see that I'm actually not black. I'm white and Asian. And since when do you get to decide who keeps a pet bass? Lol like I said, you're a funny dude
first off let me say it's nice to finally see someone that knows what they're talking about when it comes to native fish. your tank is similar to mine. mines a 90 and I've had several bass mostly spots. I think your drift wood is perfect with the open space to the left. plus with the wood going to the surface you could get a little red slider turtle and he could get out of the water on the wood. I had one and it was great and I have the same type wood positioned so he could surface. they both are incredible to watch especially feeding. and yes bass grow very fast so you can't really get attached to them. anyway again good job!
Great video! Love the tank setup. Nice and big and very natural to simulate a basses natural habitat. Lots of people on RUclips don't know what they're doing keeping bass. You do
growing up my pops had a tank with all fish he caught big cat large mouth bass and blue gills was a badass tank! and definitely love the look of your aquarium! very nice
Very much enjoyed this video. I caught a baby blue gill and put him in 15 gallon. Until he gets bigger of course ... but he seems calm and very hardy as well. Thanks for sharing !! I got more info. I was nervous at first until I saw this .
Video was great I did the same thing many years ago with a Florida Large Mouth Bass, had him for 3 years till he died, he was incredibly smart, ate so much that he ate me out of house and home. I resorted at winter time to feeding him balls of lean hamburger. He would actually play fetch with a large plastic stone. Raised him from a 3/4" minnow. One of the best pets I have ever had.
We had one in a 50 gallon tank.. he grew up big. We fed it gold fish and minnows.. Sadly one day we came home to find he jumped out of the tank and died while we were at work.. was very fascinating to watch his/her habits..
The sunfish are always the highlight of vacationing in the northwoods. About 30 of them would swarm over every time I walk out to the docks because they know what it means XD Either 'protection' or food.
I have two little ones in my tank with some cichlids. Have to feed both at the same time at opposite ends of the tank or the dominant one gets all the worms. The dominant one is starting to eat some of the ciclid pellets now, which will make feeding easier. They also like little strips of venison about as well as worms.
I kept a Guadalupe bass for a while. He was very smart and grew really fast. I ended up feeling bad about keeping him, so I released him back where I found him.
Creek Small mouth are WAY harder, you have to oxygenate the absolute crap out of the tank, AND somehow have a current running, I bet one of those "endless" pools would work pretty well for those. Good video!
Really cool video man. I've been thinking about doing this for a long time but it's kind of intimidating. Really good video and info. I liked and subscribed. Check my channel out if you get a chance. I do tons of bass fishing.
Bass and bluegill are some of the toughest fish. Better than anything you could buy in a pet store. I've got six in a 400 gallon tank.. they haven't fought yet.
I caught a 7 inch small mouth 2/3 days ago and it's in a 95 gallon and I put 5 big tadpoles and 15/16 small shad with it. When do you think it will start to eat?
Will he know how to survive when you put him back? How long will he be in the aquarium for? Won't he be waiting to be fed back in the river? Or do they usually just go about their life afterwards?
I got a 70g Metaframe for my 10th BD. Not many fish stores in back then. I used a cast net to catch all kinds of lake fish. Caught a Large Mouth Bass about 3 inches long added hi to my tank which was full many different pan fish at that time a little bigger than the bass it also had crawdads and other various creatures from the lakes. I feed the Bass every thing I that he would eat within year my tank was empty except for the Bass. I would change the water maybe once a month if that much. It had to 2 sponge filters with under gravel filters. When I let him go he was around 12". So easy to keep. I am 63 now and still keep fish.
Good info and nice vid! My only concern is releasing the bass. You should never release any fish that has been kept in captivity native or not. Not only is it unethical but almost always illegal. The concern is accidentally introducing parasites, diseases and bacteria into the water.
if you accuse someone of being unethical and breaking the law, please know enough of what you are talking about to quote the law or regulation you are referring in the subject state. otherwise keep quiet.
when you set up the tank and do water changes, are you using well water or municipal water? I had some crawfish and few small panfish in a tank when I was younger. My dad had me go get water from the pond to do the water changes.
From personal experience with my pet bass War Eagle, you forgot to mention that it's also illegal, but nobody really enforces that law. When we were selling our house to move, we had police officers come to showings of our house. They left me a sticky note on my fish tank saying it's illegal but awesome. Just be a little bit careful of who you mention to that you have a pet bass.

Where did you get this fish tank from?
I caught a 6lb bass and put it in my pond. It really stunk up my pond. It gave it a musty smell like a swamp. Did you have the same issue in the aquarium with the musty smell?
PS. It also killed everything in it. Nothing survived . Just dead fish everywhere. If you got to close to the pond edge he would attack you. LOL!
