@chrisysmith51 This is not a folk song. It was written by Daniel Lanois while working in Dubin, Ireland. It was inspired by the Liffey River in Dublin which rises with the incoming tide. The water is black like a mirror. He wrote the lyrics in Dubin and the music in Orleans. peace
this is a folk song redone by dave, but i think it originally had christian values, but modern secular people could interpret this as just knowing and believing that there is something greater than us and life, and though as magnificent as we are as humans, there is a greater good working in harmony with life. It is a beautiful song regardless of how you interpret it. I'm sure Dave would want his listeners to interpret this for themselves to benefit their lives and the lives of others.
does anyone know what this song is really about. to me its like theres a feeling inside of u and its trying to get out . and when it talks about the river rising its talking about that feeling rising up inside of u. that feeling to me would be god. but what do u guys think?
yes, i do know it´a cover (originally D.Lanois, Acadia, right?). i like the way DM sings it, that´s what i thanked him for, not for having written the song:-)
she's on the album version but vocals are a little lower in the mix then the video. I'm not much of a Dave Matthews fan but he does a pretty good job in this clip.
I just recorded and covered this version about an hour ago on my myspace, i had no fucking tabs so it was really frustrating trying to get tims part but, eh, im no musician, check it out though if you'd like myspace(dot)com/itshunterpowell
Do not like this version :( guitars not the same, voices seem strained, 2 guitars annoying, sometimes the original just can't be touched. Some singers do better covers of songs, not this time.
This song is so brilliant, it's impossible to mess it up.
This is yet another beautiful version of one of my favorite songs.
i was at this show and have a full dvd of it...one of the best nights of my life
Their misic make me feel relax like I am on a beach. So beautiful.

Dave's covers are always really good.
great song, thanks Dave:-)
Lulls me into a trance every time.
pure raw talent!!!!!
this band is the best !!!!
Too bad they never made a dvd for Live @ luther college, its up there with my favorite albums.

anyone know a song where part of it says "4321 the barrel of a gun" something like that that like in middle of song
No. His name is Daniel Lanois
Did Dave write this song?
He stays pretty true to the original, by Daniel Lanois. Nice and restrained.
so pretty much its about believe in what you want?

I agree with kcn. This isn't a bad version, it's just that Daniel Louise sounds better.
Barrel of a Gun by Guster
funny enough but Willie Nelson does a pretty good version of this song on his "Teatro" album.
Whoops, I meant Daniel Lanois. :P
@chrisysmith51 sounds good, but dave didn't write it! daniel lanois did. beautiful song, though.
Its 4 chords :) Dm, C, F, Bb
the bible
You do know that this is a cover?
is that a hobbit? and why isn't tim showing off his guns, in one of his "muscle shirts"?
not bad.. pretty casual.. Willie and Daniel really spank it though..
Problem is the original guy doesn't have a very good voice.
dave sounds much better
You got some issues. You sit there and spout off saying everything your boy DM is against...hate. Grow up.

The sound track from the movie SLING BLADE is like a MILLION times better than this crap
