      I have one in a game I currently DM, Pride. They're an elemental attuned to negative emotions(Called a Negative Primordial), but were trapped in a ring that one of the characters acquired. They had a choice of using the ring's magical on-use skill and potentially killing Pride, or helping him. The group chose to help him, eventually learning he was a shy, soft spoken type who was captured by the main antagonists and soul-siphoned into a ring for their sick experiments.
      They were able to free him by reverse engineering one of the antagonists' own machines, and now can call on Pride if they need him. (He's always one level lower than the party, and is focused on ranged support and stealth. And in order to 'level him up' they'd have to send him on missions or take him along. Sort of like a retainer. They've so far used him to great effect with scouting for information, or even escape routes so far!).

      I agree. I use DMPC's quite a lot too. They're great for narratively nudging your PC's a certain way without railroading too much in the written modules and allow your players to form a balanced party using whatever they like. (As the dmpc can fill whatever party role gap they've left.)

      I saw a story once of someone who had a DMPC paladin that the players actually became fond of. I don't remember the details, as I saw the story years ago on a tumblr post, but the gist of it is that this setting had an evil king, and the party was searching for a bunch of artifacts to stop the king. Throughout the story, the DMPC would occasionally leave the party, during which is when the really big fights would occur, leaving the PCs, not the DMPC, to take all the glory in conquering these battles. At the end of the campaign, the DM revealed that the paladin was the evil king, but that he wasn't necessarily evil himself, just...corrupted, I guess? The paladin was a sort of "split personality" of the king, or, more accurately, the king was a split personality of the paladin. The paladin-king /wanted/ the players to stop him, and helped them collect the artifacts to that end, leading to a very tearful final battle in which the PCs had to kill someone they considered a friend.
      My point being, DMPCs can be handled really well, even when they are a major player in the plot like that. All these DMs who just want to make the biggest and baddest characters to outshine their players are just really, really bad storytellers.

      its mostly because the furry fandom is full of people unwilling to let go of their childlike wonder or behaviors. in most cases this is fine as it just brings a bit more childlike wonder back to an adult's life, but...well....unless you accept that you are in fact an adult and not in fact a child it will be a problem.

    • @LordScreeech
      @LordScreeech 2 года назад +79

      my personal theory is that cringe people join furry groups based on their surface level liking of anthro characters, usually these groups are kind and welcoming and have a fare share of people too shy to call them on their bullshit. eventually the group has enough and stops accepting their behavior, causing the cringe individual to look for a "More accepting" group. through this method they filter themselves through different groups of furries that tried to help them stop being cringe and started to move towards groups that accept and encourages this behavior looking for a place to fit in. These echo chambers grow over time accepting more of these types of individuals making them believe that their behavior is, or should be, accepted by everyone else, those that doesn't accept it are the "biggots" that wont accept people for who they are and are the "False furries" because "the community should be welcoming to everyone!" thus they force their cringey behavior on any social interaction they have.

      @@RinoGato There was an episode of the show CSI that came out in 2003. It was a lot of peoples introduction to furries & the episode depicted it as if they were all sexual deviants & the entire reason for furry conventions was to basically have big orgies in their suits. It became commonplace to mock them as some sort of sexual deviants after that to the point that I once saw a news story about a furry convention that was a victim of a gas attack and saw 19 people hospitalized and the news reporters were literally just *making fun of them.* They were literally laughing at people who had inhaled chlorine gas and were in the hospital because they happened to be wearing fursuits.
      It's not as bad nowadays, but I still run into people nowadays who think furries are sexual deviants trying to find legal ways to get around their zoophilia. I really think those two events that happened so close to each other really set a social precedent for many. Their first introduction to furries was open mocking and public humiliation at their expense and some people just never questioned why that is horribly wrong and messed up.

    Then it's revealed that the scholar was cursed by the BBEG with resurrection because his weakness was humorous to him.
    So the scholar would appear as a spirit for awhile to the party and follow them around before being pulled into the ground and becoming flesh again, but he would have to claw his way back out, every time he dies, which would be fairly frequently, as I would want the scholar to gradually become more and more brave, even if he definitely does not have (and will never have) the power to back it up lol

    honestly the whole idea of a "lone wolf" character is kinda silly, cause when lone wolves leave a pack, it tends to be because either there was a dispute in leadership or food is scarce, and it's typically the latter. even then when a wolf matures they leave their own pack to either start their own or join another, which helps with genetic diversity and making sure resources in one area isnt overused. if anything a wolf character would prolly treat a ground or party as their pack, and do their best to make sure everyone gets along and works together, not act like a dick. of course, that's just one interpretation of how one could be played, but personally that's prolly how i would play a wolf character; a level-headed person who treats their party as family and does anything to make sure they all are well.

    • @alyssahansen1400
      @alyssahansen1400 2 года назад +3

      Yeah I always thought the lone wolf stereotype odd considering they are very social animals and have strong familial bonds. Wolves evolved to cooperate. They don't do well on their own especially since their main prey (elk) are so large and difficult to take down.

    • @lulub517
      @lulub517 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah they really don’t know a lot about wolves but just like the look I guess (I mean I love wolves in every way too but I also love the animal the most) and the animals are very pack oriented, the lone wolf is often the outcast in not a badass edgy way, but a sickly, stranded rogue wolf way. They usually get picked off by other packs or die from starvation.
      The same thing of people talking about the “alpha wolf” which isn’t really a thing. The “alpha” so to speak, is like the carer of the pack. Looks after the pups and keeps them warm.

      Yes, that is an NPC. DMPC is where the DM plays a character in his/her own game, except this character probably won't do any stupid mistakes, will know everything in advance, and probably won't be attacked as badly. If it is done right, it is not a DMPC, it is an NPC. DMPC is always wrong.

      My best advice is even if you are a furry and make a have a character with edgy qualities just make sure they have depth or other qualities about them!
      What that person did was just disgusting, he didn't need to be a furry for ANYBODY to see/agree on that.
      Don't let your fear smother yourself away from having fun or enjoying things you like! Like said before, just make sure there's more to your character than *just* being a animalistic character, or edgy.
      I've had a "edgy fox prince" who was never seen as a bad or annoying. Despite the people I was with not being furries or one or two being anti-furry they enjoyed the adventure we were on.
      I had it that my character, Despite being from a rich royal family had many siblings. His chances of gaining access to those riches or the throne was low from all the competition. Thus he'd go on a journey to gain popularity or attention from his parents. I gave him flaws, and more personality than just edgy qualities. I made him grow and value things more as he adventure with the party. Realize there is more important things than gold & riches. In the end he found out his rich family gets their fortune from doing dirty things and my character ends up going against his family to put a stop to it, asking the party for help. A huge turnaround and character development from the first day he met them from being too prideful to ask for help to fully accepting their help as comrades & friends.

He turned it into a joke and we ended up laughing With him more often than not. (Things like staying in the darkest corner became a running gag with him where he'd always try to find one.) Then again, he also gave his character a Massive deception so he was able to lie super easily. In fact, he convinced the entire party that he had dark vision (obviously he didn't) and so he ended up leading us through some super dark sewers! As a note, the rest of us Had dark vision which made it all the funnier.

      I sort of did that in the first campaign I was in during lockdown. It was an Edo Japan-themed game and I played a samurai who was working as part of a sadistic samurai cult, aloof and disinterested and only joining the party to get access to village information for a potential "purge".
      Then the party saved my life and I got to return the favour soon after. Chivalry I canonically knew my clan wouldn't carry out due to their nigh-eugenic "survival of the fittest philosophy". And so my edginess was buffered and I became a double agent aiming to bring my cult down from the inside.
      Edginess is fine, as long as you start with something and progress the character and explore their flaws as you go on, not just expecting them to be a badass all the way through.

    I have to say that I'm a little disappointed in the 'furry baiting' intro to these stories. Neither of these situations had anything to do with the players being furry. That point had nothing to do with them being horrible people or furry characters. You can easily remove that point from either story and the result is the same. Yet you started with "I'm not against furries, but let me tell you about these horrible furries!"
    Sure there are times when the 'that guy' being a furry is relevant to the story. Usually when they are forcing players who are uncomfortable with it living out their furry fantasies. But that's not this case. It wasn't relevant that the first guy was playing a wolf character. The conflict was about him being a racist incel. The second story the problem wasn't the DMPC cat god, it was the DM was on a power trip abusing his powers to torment his players for years. And honestly the only thing the original poster did wrong was staying in the game for so long and being passive aggressive about it, instead of just confronting him directly and leaving earlier.

      How do you pay for roads and supplying the military if not with taxes? Are corporations paying for the military? Are roads meant to require a toll to travel on and thus only those who can afford to pay for roads have the privilege of traveling on roads? That might not make for the most effective economy.

    "if he does one more thing he's out" no, I'm sorry, he's already done plenty, that discord DM incident is when he should have been removed from the group. Not necessarily fully cancelled forever, if the DM wants to run more games with different people and include him with the "don't do that shit again" warning then fine, but you can't keep him in that game and with those players, at least not for a good while.
    Even if there isn't outright conflict it's going to be weird and creepy, how do you think both of those players are going to feel every time he opens his mouth, every time he tries to hit on another NPC or even PC going forward? Most people in that situation are going to feel weird about it. Not to mention it's running the risk of him throwing some kind of fit (which I assume is what's coming up). Even if he doesn't go that far again, it's just no good keeping him in that particular game.
