Ether and glow plugs are definitely a bad idea. I knew the old thing would start. Nothing like the old iron. That would be an awesome dozer to fix and get going again.
@@HamiltonvilleFarm I was about to say the same thing, Ether OR Glow, never both. Ether alone used in moderation won't actually do any harm. Glad you didn't take that shower the exhaust was threatening lol
Ether and glow plugs are fine. Just make sure you don't hit the ether before you start cranking it. Heat the plugs, crank, spray. And make sure to crank it for a few seconds after you're done spraying before you repeat the process. Our John Deere 9 series tractors have ether injection, which is worth its weight in gold. Just hit a button on the column. No getting out of the cab when it's 20 below with 20 mph winds.
It'd be worth asking your CAT dealer about their "classic parts" line. That component may be available for order. It'd be great to get that old dozer working again; I'd love to have a D4D!
That thing is a blast from the past and still love the color on that thing. Great job Hank, I cannot wait to get back to Kansas I know I will have questions all day long. Have a great one battle and stay safe!!!
Many years ago one of my friends told me that some one else had a problem just like yours. The people who owned the dozer dug a huge deep hole and pushed it into the hole and hurried the Bulldozer. That was up around New Washington Indiana.
I am buying a long sitting inoperable D4D this week. It is under cover and supposedly runs. I can only hope my D4D starts and runs this easily. We are scheduled to pick it up this weekend. I also hope we can manhandle it onto our trailer.
What you need to do is remove the seal housing first then gouge out both sides of the splined collar. make sure you realign the splines and tack weld it. Let it cool. Then you have to heat it all around reasonably hot, then arc weld with high nickel rod. keep the heat on until you finish welding it. then let it air cool and you should be right.
Never liked using startin fluid, I had a great way of starting diesels you need 3 more tools elbow size rubber gloves , gas and some rags . Soak the rags in gas put them around the air cleaner , make sure the filter is on so not to suck the rags into the engine the fumes from the gas will start the engine . That way you don't head the heavy pounding of the rods trying to compress the starting fluid saves bending a rod , fun videos enjoy watching 👍
I learned something from this comment. My friend got an old chinese Tractor and we can only get it running with start spray. Spray too much into the intake and it KNOCKS like crazy. We sure wont do that anymore!
@Spencer Sand B.S. Starting fluid burns at a higher rate and produces higher pressures in diesel engines and as such can, and has, broken pistons, heads, valves, blocks. I have seen it when I worked in the shop of a construction company. It's no fun pulling the engine out of a 235 excavator because someone used starting fluid.
I also use wd 40, just don't use either with the glow plug or you can blow the exhaust manifold off it.my hair was standing up on my neck when I see the k oxygen cyl with no cap on it. I had one fall over and I jumped on it before it took off, I don't want to see you or any one get hurt I think the world of you Mark

The starting fluid is not as bad as no water, steam is water and counts as the precombustion chambers on cat are to the side and cook fairly fast but can be taken out and replace with the head on as there is three rubber O rings there I'm thinking... I remember the eight sided socket that fits up like a torque socket on the inside stid of the outside like normal stuff and they get twisted in to eight hundred foot pounds of torque. I have seen twenty foot pieces of pipe on inch drive to get them out when you don't have a power multiplier.
