- Hey guys! I've been getting a ton of requests from you guys to talk about "The Pagemaster" so here we go...
This movie came out in 1994 and stars pretty much everyone who was a big movie star then. It's about a kid who has to fight his way through different stories in a magical library. It's really cute and I hope you like the video!
Hope you guys have a great day/night/unit of time. Stay safe and I'll see you in the next video!
I came back to watch this and I just realized something. THE FRONT DESK had a phone! That librarian knew what he was doing from the beginning! 😂
Oh he absolutely knew that sneaky bastard 😂
I feel like I remember this film giving me the 1st vague impressions of a realisation that actors were people. Like, if I see Michael J. Fox as a lawyer in one film and a teenager in another, That's just the way the world works. That's what an Actor is. But when I saw Culkin go from Home Alone, to the Good Son, to Pagemaster, something clicked in my brain, and I realised that he was a kid like me, but with a job.
That doesn't really have anything to do with anything, but it's interesting how these nostalgic movies affected the way I developed as a person.
It really is interesting when I think about the lessons taught to me by movies in general. Even more underated movies like this one can stick with in a strange way.
I just realized the joke with page 1001 , Arabian nights was initially a collection of stories called 1001 nights. Clever writing there .
So…Sir Patrick Stewart voices Adventure, Whoopi Goldberg voices Fantasy, Leonard Nimoy voices Dr Jekyll…this is the weirdest Star Trek spin-off movie I’ve ever seen
Right?? Gotta love the reunion specials 😂
William Shatner would have been the voice of Western.
Not only that@@AveryTalksAboutStuff but Megatron/Galvatron (Frank Welker) was also in that movie due to the chemistry between the two since the Transformers movie heyday back in the 80s, and it transitioned when Leonard Nimoy voiced Sentinel Prime in Transformers III: Dark of the Moon while Hugo Weaving voiced Megatron, right up until Age of Extinction and The Last Knight, that they finally brought Frank Welker back.
I always thought Horror was supposed to look like Frankenstein's monster...
You're probably right, I guess it was just the hunchback reference that threw me. 😅
I thought that too. I think after seeing Disney's version of Hunchback the following year, I kind of realized that's who he's supposed to be (considering he shouts "Sanctuary!") Frankenstein's monster almost was in the movie. You can find it in the tie in books and is even on the poster. I'm assuming they cut it out either because it stopped the movie or because it seemed too scary. (Although Mr. Hyde was kind of nightmare-inducing)
@@MrTristy22 Hyde is definitely nightmare fuel 😂
I always got Igor vibes from Horror. Igor is sometimes A hunchback, but not THE Hunchback.
Morning video because it was supposed to go live last night but then...didn't. Sooo...let me know what kind of coffee you're drinking today.
THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR 1,200 SUBSCRIBERS!!! AHHHHHH!!!!
It’s exactly what I needed to go with my breakfast!
☺️☺️☺️ aw I'm so glad!
I'm a tea lady, piping hot orange pekoe, with a cloudda milk :-D

Congrats!
"I'd like to spend MY vacation AT THE LIBRARY!!!!" -Sokka
Also, 14:28 have you ever tried using 1 lifejacket for 2 adults?
no, cuz it's not MEANT for that!
Just because 2 people could fit on that wood panel at the end of titanic, doesn't mean they'd both float and stay out of the freezing water
....okay, I'll get off my weird trivial soapbox
Ah, I just love Sokka!
Fair enough, admittedly my life preserver knowledge isn't airtight. 😂
Oh my goodness, I REMEMBER THIS ONE!! Did you see Atlas Shrugged and Trickle Down economics in the fiction section?
Haha, that's hilarious 🤣
This is one of those one-off animated films that has amazing animation for no reason. I feel that way about the Chipmunk Adventure too. I mean Glean Keane animating Girls of Rock and Roll?!?!
The Pagemaster or as I call it the poor mans Wizard of Oz! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 This was a favorite of my mine as a kid. Cool to hear your thoughts! 👍👍👍👍
That's a perfect way of describing it! 😂 Had fun with this one. 😊
4:45 The Pagemaster is a classic. A fearful boy unexpectedly embarks on an adventure in a labyrinth-like library with 3 living books which he encounters fictional antagonists from famous stories along the way.
I also only had memories of this movie when he's running through the scary library lmao
I'm surprised it never got a spinoff TV series. Figure that would be a good way to introduce kids to classic literature.
I don't remember ever watching this movie as a kid, so the first time I encountered it was back in June during movie night with a friend who really loves it. I'm still baffled over the fact that this kid who's too afraid to do anything didn't realize that reading fiction books were a safe way to have fun BEFORE this harrowing experience, but since he constantly spouts facts and statistics to validate his fears I suppose the only books he valued were nonfiction up to that point. This poor kid just needed to survive a few near-death experiences to realize you only live once and you may as well take risks while you can! XD
Yeah it's a really underrated one if you ask me and I love that the kid gets to fight his fears.
Oooh I really loved this movie as a little kid, although the live action parts kinda bored me back then until we got to the library. I was such a bookworm. I remember sometime before my mom passed she got me a book that was associated with this film it had buttons and sounds effects from different parts of the movie. I think I was like 5 or something 😂. Ah good times lol
Aw, that's such a sweet memory 💛 I was also a huge bookworm as a kid.
one of the few times i’ve subscribed after watching the first video on a page. great stuff, keep it up!
Thank you and welcome!
*Hidden memory unlocked*
You're welcome 😂

I'm having tea with honey to start my day along with french toast for breakfast! 🌞
Oooh, that sounds lovely!
It does!
The first video I decide to watch today is by the amazing, entertaining and chill Avery. I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid but could barely remember anything about it. This brought back some memories good ones. Thank you for reviewing it and I can not wait for the next review. This channel is truly one of the best out there.
Thank you so much! That's so very kind. 💛
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff You are very welcome ^_^ Have a good day
@@conveniencestoreentertainm1968 you too!
Imagine if there was an alternate scene with Mr. Dewey, where Richard becomes so freaked out by Mr. Dewey's book suggestions, and when he got to the scary Horror part, Richard became so scared, he shoved Mr. Dewey aside, ran back out into the raging storm, and got back on his bike, and peddled for his life, in a desperate attempt to escape the crazy librarian and made it home without the nails, and told his parents what happened.
First time this was on TV I found The Pagemaster a bit scary at times, good film though and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this movie, entertaining content as always!
Thank you! It's definitely an underated movie. A bit scary but you know. 😅
When you brought up the kid maybe never coming back to the library to return his friends, I kinda imagined this premise that could have been the sequel.
It’s a few weeks after the first movie and the kid hasn’t returned his books yet and they’re overdue. So The Pagemaster sends out pirates, knights and monsters from the book world to fetch the overdue books.
Maybe Long John Silver and crew could eat at Long John Silvers.
In my head, half of the movie would just be random fish-out-of-water skits involving pirates in modern day😂.
Is it bad that whenever I get a bit overwhelmed, stressed out, depressed, ect I can put one of these videos on and im able to go all woohsah lol. Like your reactions to theses movies and TV shows makes my laugh do hard sometimes 😅
Awww, that means so much ☺️ I'm really glad the videos can be helpful.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff they really are! You are pretty awesome. Keep up the hard work 🙂
@@Adam-lc6mk thank you. That really means a lot ☺️😭
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff hey don't thank me lol. Just keep doing what you are doing
I vaguely remember that movie too, omg! Thanks for the nostalgia! Too bad this film was a flop, they were trying to recapture the magic (and box-office) of ''Who framed Roger Rabbit''... It didn't work for ''Cool World'' and it didn't work for ''Pagemaster'' either lol
Great video as always! :)
Thanks for watching! I love reminding people of stuff they forgot existed. 😂 It's totally an underrated movie.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Underrated movie about promoting a love for reading & self-growth that also had a popular 16-bit platform video game based on it for the SEGA Genesis & SNES.
Thank you for covering this! I'm glad you talked about it. My next task, should you accept, is yet another episode of BEYOND BELIEF: FACT OR FICTION. There was an episode where one of the segments had to do with a red-eyed ghost terrorizing a family. Another one that gave me many a sleepless night.
I am planning on doing more beyond belief! We all love that series 🤩
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Awesome! I feel like any episode would be worth covering if only there was enough time for each one.
@@jacobbramlett3251 I'm determined to cover a good many of them at least 😂
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I'll be ready for them!
I liked the movie so much I play Fibbage Enough about you while watching this movie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nah. You're not weird for being into Raven and Legend of Sleepy Hollow as a kid. Quite a few kids get into dark stories like that. I did come out of the theater watching Corpse Bride in the theater and there was a kid about 6/7 who really liked it.
On another note, this is something funny. Richard says, he's a cartoon only to be corrected by the Pagemaster voiced by Christopher LLoyd...who played a Toon!
Glad to know it wasn't just me! And yes! Who Framed Roger Rabbit is such a classic. ☺️
I first saw this movie in like 1st grade in the classroom. I wasn't paying much attention to it until the cartoon part lmao. But then I was drawn to Horror in particular. I never caught the name of the movie and I spent the next year or so begging my mom to look for "the movie with the kid who meets 3 living books" and eventually re-discovered it. I was obsessed with it, especially with Horror, for a while. I would draw Horror being happy and wholesome because I felt bad about how often he gets picked on in the movie. Of course my artistic skill at the time was lacking so the drawings really just looked like a rectangle with a smiley face in it.
I rediscovered it again last year as an adult and really love the childlike wonder evoked in "Whatever You Imagine." Maybe it's just nostalgia for this movie and other 90s animated movies but I really think that song captures my childhood really well.
It's a super underrated movie in my book (ok, pun intended) and I agree that horror is my favorite and I love him. 😊
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Me too!
Leonard Nimoy is Dr Jekkel? Wow I saw this movie 1000 times and never realized that he is Spock.
I know! He had so many great credits as a voice actor. ☺️
The disastrous production and legal battle over billing ("Vanity! Vanity!") is almost more interesting than the resulting film.
i remember watching that movie as a kid i always enjoyed it.
It's a pretty solid one for sure!
8:10 my number one genie wish is for all bugs to have to be at least a foot away from everyone at all times
This is a solid wish ☺️
23:50 Same here! My heart!
💛💛💛
I love this amazing movie
Such an underrated gem!
Horror is Frankenstein’s kid
That makes much more sense than hunchback 😅
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff yeah, especially because of the green and the weird eyes, which specifically put Doctor Frankenstein on edge (hence the abandonment of what is essentially his *child*)
I remember watching this movie all the time when I was a kid, this, Shark boy and lava girl, and The Sorcerers stone were my three favorite movies as a kid.
Ooh those other two movies will probably end up being future videos. 😊
5:55 hahah oooooh shots fired

Wow I never knew that, So I guess IKEA is more than just a shop, it's also a real life video game maze with real stages, COOL.😂
Ikea is an ✨experience✨
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I bet it is
I think Horror was meant to look like Dr. Frakenstein's sometimes assistant Igor, rather than the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I can see that too...I just figured because of the hunchback quote. Wikipedia describes him as, "a hunchbook with a misshapen spine". He could be a cross between the two though. 🤷♀️
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Well then maybe your right. 🤷♀ I didn't realize they quoted Notre Dame.
@@morganbawtree whatever he's supposed to be I do love him 😊
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I do believe Horror is a combination of both Quasimodo [1] (this being on account of the famous "Sanctuary" quote Horror says when in possible mortal danger, never mind also the generalized bell-tolling & rope-swinging the malformed book also performs in his section of the library) & Dr. Frankenstein's assistant Igor, because Horror -- much like Quasi & Igor each both have -- also has a bent (and as the Wikipedia page stated, misshapen) spine.
Furthermore, I think this film's writers viewed Victor Hugo's tragedy as a horror simply because all of the principal characters ended up dead in the end.
In reality, however, _Hunchback_ in itself was really intended by its author to serve as his plea to keep Notre Dame Cathedral from falling into further disrepair so it could be preserved rather than demolished, since the French government of the author's day was actively considering tearing down the famous church with iconic belltower and as it just so happens, several decades later/a couple of years ago, over 50% of the genuine Notre Dame in real world Paris found itself engulfed in flames, but thankfully, the iconic church didn't completely burn down.
1. The titular deformed _Hunchback_ of Victor Hugo's tragic novel that was moreso a love letter about the Notre Dame Cathedral herself/itself than the characters that filled the story's contents, since all of the key characters were found dead by the end anyway.
The page master was a huge favorite of mine before I could read! I had to be under the age of five! I can remember that in retrospect because now I can read all the words I once couldn’t
A WHALE ISN'T A FIS-- Oh, HAI DER! :3 Hehe.
😂😂😂
Hands down that librarian's favorite customer has to be Twilight Sparkle, she is single-handedly keeping that library alive... so many bits/dollars have been spent there checking out the same books over and over again and i guarantee she has read every single one of those books over a thousand times. 🤣
Aw this is one of my favorite movies growing up! I remember as a kid. I was terrified of those scenes from Dr Jekyll/hydes home, and then the Moby dick one! Even the mural that had ink drip down and turn into an ink dragon to get Richard, also scared me as a kid. Yet still love this movie. The animation is great, its such an underrated movie!
It's one of those movies that horrifies you as a kid but as an adult you realize it's really good. Prince of Egypt is also like that.
I am not sure what to say other than I look the cast up and realized that a good chunk of them of been in Star Trek: Next Generation. Whoopi Goldberg who voiced Fantasy, Patrick Stewart as Adventure and Christopher Loyd as the librarian are the roles they play in this movie. And of course Lenard Nemoy is in this.
Yes! I kept thinking that Natasha would love this one. 😂

I love that!
have you ever seen Wish Master?
When I was a kid the popular books was this lesser known horror series that predated Goose bumps and was kicked out of popularity by Goose bumps.

I watched this movie a lot as a kid but more so for its animation, score and songs though I do find it okay overall. I still love the songs Dream Away and Whatever You Imagine.
Yeah it actually is a pretty underrated movie in my opinion 😊
Found your channel with this video. I loved this video along with this childhood favorite movie of mine. I used to watch it so much on VHS. Also love that I finally found someone else that knows of The Lion and The Lamb. I am assuming your talking about the animated short (movie) from the 90s ?

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff hehehe 🤭
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff the Fly has a bit of nudity in it. Be Prepared to edit around that.
@@MisterH37 copy that, thanks haha
Horror is a homage to Igor from Frankenstein. Not Hunchback.
I've looked into this quite a bit since making this video and honestly I think it was intended to be a bit of both. TV tropes.com lists him as a hunchback reference, while IMDb seems to think he's a Frankenstein reference who makes a hunchback reference and the movie's wiki calls horror, "a hunchback book with a crooked spine". You can see both influences since he's falling apart to resemble the patched together monster but they go out of their way to make references with him to hunchback.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff There you go! I'm impressed with your research I can agree with that :)

I honestly don't remember...but like with wishbone I had this thing where I didn't like talking animals and even now I hate anything where an animal gets hurt and so that probably didn't help matters either. I was a strange child. 😅
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Okay then.
Yeah, I remember when I was a kid I owned this movie and I watched it a lot, and I'll admit I realize this movie wasn't very good. Yeah, I don't even think the special effects are good, even the dragon paint chasing Richie seemed cheesy. I guess the one good thing I can say about this movie is, I was curious about all the book references in it, the characters from fairy tales and I wanted to read more. It's true that two years later Muppet Treasure Island came out, and from this movie that was how I knew who Long John Silver was.
Yeah, this movie got negative reviews, and I rank it as a weak movie, I'm giving it a 5/10, the reason it's not getting below 5 is because it's good @ encouraging kids to read more. The rest doesn't do it for me. The kid being way too much of a pussy, the animation looked cheesy, and I didn't care for the characters @ all. One of the things that really doesn't work is the books are feeling held hostage in a library? Libraries are for people to check out books and read and they have to go back, and those three books are the only three books that come to life with arms and legs, I mean bookstores are for books to completely leave and I don't see how it works with books coming to life. I mean in Toy Story toys coming to life just worked better, I mean toys looks like creatures, books are only for reading, it doesn't seem necessary.
Another thing, Richard Tyler doesn't even read he just goes on an adventure, that's not really reading, I mean Neverending Story was a much better movie, @ least the kid was reading. Richard wasn't even really reading, it just seemed hella random. Oh, and Christopher Lloyd's monologue as the live-action librarian is probably what I would rank as the worst movie monologue. Yeah, I can go on about how this movie doesn't work, it's just I'd be writing a lot.
4:46
You know when it comes to horror i think they were going for less Quasimodo and more Igor.
I researched it and he's supposed to be a mix of both as best I can tell.
