I have photophobia (light sensitive eyes) and I absoulutly despise anyone who locks dark mode behind a paywall.

i put everything in dark mode. I have autism and lights are one of my sensory issues. I work at a warehouse and I have to turn down the lights for the monitors I use. I cant stare at them for hours and hours all night. Also I hiss at the morning sun everyday as I exit work. (i work 3rd) And of course the front of the building faces directly east and has that massive parking lot so it just blinds the heck out of you.
People with light sensitive eyes are more likely to have blue eyes. (I have blue eyes)

By the way! In the *very* first story, the 70 year old was actually a poacher!
She was initially trampled by a group of elephants and survived, but passed away at the hospital later.
It is believed that they stampeded her funeral, the only person they attacked being her corpse, to ensure she was dead since she was still alive when taken away. They even found which home was hers and targeted it as well.
Elephants are similar to humans in the sense that we have long memories and strong emotions. Stories of elephants taking revenge for the deaths of other elephants, especially ones they are close to, are not at all uncommon. We have no proof, of course, but that is the most common theory that lines up with everything we know about elephant behavior.
The elephants were native to a sanctuary 100 miles away.
This makes me very happy, thank you.
from what I've read on this, it seems she in particular distracted a mama elephant so poachers could steal the baby. chances of this mama being the culprit are really high if that's true

Thanks for shedding a light on this. People say elephants are agressive, but tbh they mostly are against humans and other predators, not with species who never harmed them. They just see humanity as a menace and rightfully so... Elephants have been shown to have deep empathy for other species, and even a moral compass, but this story is one in a long line showing they hold strong grudges... They are brilliant animals who deserve to be studied and understood way better than they currently are.
Sadly it seems the local farmers are reacting by poisoning elephants 😣
Anytime I hear carbon-based, I think back to when I was like a 13 yo vegetarian and someone asked if I was plant-based. It was the first time I had ever heard that word, so I answered "No, I'm pretty sure we're all carbon-based, even the plants."

It shifts the wavelength of the light, making it detectable by the cones the colorblind have, so long as they aren't monochromatic.

Well, colorblind glasses use the same concept, but on purpose, to make objects colorblind people can't usually see look a different color, hence allowing them to be seen.

About the "Banana Wars" thing on the memorial: The conflict was the US intervening in Central America, and the death toll on the American side is only in the hundreds. Given the size and massive population of the US, the fact that one person in the area that this memorial covers was one of the casualties is pretty interesting.
My favorite part of the colorblindness gags is knowing the joke 10 seconds before Click and patiently watching him make it visible. It's the best kind of foreplay.

They then switched to the kind we are familiar with now and the same thing is starting to happen now. But overharvesting was definitly a huge factor in how the disease spread.

The banana wars were a series of conflicts that happened between 18-something and 1934 when America took control over the Spanish territories after the Spanish-American War. There are some wacky stories about the banana wars like how the companies now known as Dole and Chiquita were funding guerrilla organizations and politicians and all around just destabilizing Honduras politically so they could monopolize the banana trade.

No jokes: I use a light mode everywhere because I have very sensitive eyesight, and it puts more strain on my eyes to try to discern white text over black background rather than the other way round. It might look the opposite for people who don't suffer from this sensitivity, but it really is less straining and more comfortable with dark text over light background than vice-versa. Otherwise, if my eyes weren't bleeding from white on black, I'd use dark, it looks prettier.
Same, tho! White text on dark background makes my eyes hurt so much. Even after I look away it is burnt into my retinas. I'm glad to know there are more people that suffer like I do.
I prefer any text that isn't white and isn't on a white background but in a pinch I'll choose dark mode because my light sensitivity leads to blindness if I see too much white stuff because it leaves a glowing afterimage all day (and think of how many bright things you look at per day, including lights on other peoples phones as they pass by, or the freaking sky; they all leave an after image).
Ideally it'd be a pastel background and dark text. I'm not sure why black and white is used so much when you can have high contrast without both extremes which are taxing for a lot of people.

Most of my own themes - the ones I can control - have light-grey background with black text on it, which I find more comfortable. however, most of the times, themes are whether black on white, or white on black, and in this case, I prefer the former, and just lower the monitor brightness so the background turns grey.
I'm also sensitive to light, but different from you, I guess.
It's not really about me squinting / straining, it's just me hating how much light goes into my eyeballs.
I also have the blinds permanently shut in my home.
Black text on a white background does this weird thing for me where it burns into my eyes - kind of like when you stare into a lightbulb and then blink.
All my screens are as dim as possible and as dark as possible, 'cause white screens make my eyes burn.
I usually look like this when I go outside without sunglasses / a hat:

They just fell victim to the fact that a word can mean completely different things in different languages and that that is something one should cross check

About 2 years ago, my friend ran out of cat litter. Since we needed to put something in the tray for her cat to pee on, we decided to use newspaper, since it's very absorbant. We were very happy when we found a newspaper with a large, front page photo of Donald Trump - so we made sure that was the top layer. Mojo seemed to enjoy using that photo to pee and poo on 😁
I worked as a Kennel Attendant at a Vet Clinic that used newspaper for covering the bottom of crates and in the cat litter pans.
There were plenty of times I would specifically use all the stories about Trump and McConnell and whatever awful people I came across for the litter boxes specifically.
As fucked as it may be, knowing the disgusting things I had to clean up were deposited on the faces and actions of people I hate... Made cleaning it up a little less awful.

1:30 I'm lefthanded and I can confirm, I had a lefthanded scissor, and it was so uncomfortable to use, it was like a normal scissor but both "handles" where the same size, it didn't change much and I basically never used it

As someone born in Ohio and who's entire biological family (save parents who Got TFO) is in Ohio, it is awful. It borders Lake Erie, which turns toxic and is the most polluted Great Lake. They have set set the Cuyahoga River on fire 13 times. They have also managed to catch Lake Erie on fire. It has gotten redder (more conservative) and poorer for decades.
As the joke goes: Why are so many Astronauts from Ohio? If you were from Ohio, you'd want to leave the planet too.
Edit: just remembered this reason why Ohio sucks. With the overturning of Roe, Ohio's 6 week abortion ban went into affect. This meant that a 10y/o victim of sexual assault was denied an abortion by a judge because they found out at 6wks and 3days. So yeah frick Ohio.

My mom is from Ohio, so I used to spend a few weeks of summers there with my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. This was in the early 90's.
I was always introduced as "Cousin Katie from California," as if it was my name. Kids invariably asked me questions about two topics: earthquakes and "gay people."
I was too shy to ask if they thought that "gay people" wore signs to announce their presence. 🤷🏻♀️

Sorry for all the was/is conditions. My husband's birth father was rather late in life when my husband was born, like he served in WW2. My husband hasn't spoken to that side of the family since he was 12, over 30 years ago. His mom's side of the family, on the other hand is split between conservatives and liberals. Like he has cousins who moved to Oregon in the late 80's to get out of "liberal" Northern California and are pissed that the liberals are all over Portland and the other half (not his step family, which is another story) are just thrilled he found a liberal girl in Texas who shares their values.
I was invested with liberal/progressive ideas by my parents. While my parents generation of the family may have (save them) become white trash, my generation and our kids are all pretty darn liberal. (Except for my cousin who became a conspiracy theory nutter who idolizes Trump. Her kids all turned out same though.)
the fact that "nee" is also dutch for "no" and the accent of the guy with a radio was the dutch accent makes me think he might be dutch...

7:33 I had a moment like that once, except it was DnD where basically I'd just gotten a cat so obviously I wanted to protect it, so I ran away from the attacking goblin army and while I was running I ended up running in near an orphanage and this kid was asking "if I was running because my parents didn't love me" or something and I just blurted out "at least I have parents". Then the dm had me roll for emotional damage, I rolled a 20 or something so the kid just collapsed sobbing. Then the dm had me roll after a catapult was launched, I rolled super low. Apparently it for if the kid would be able to dodge, so I had to watch the kid I had destroyed with an accidental insult get crushed by a Boulder.
I'm pretty sure that lady in the first story must have done something absolutely terrible to that elephant for it to act that way.

There are reports her body was targeted during the funeral but it's worth noting that the elephant destroyed a large portion of village as well in the same attack. I know there are internet rumors that she must have done something to deserve it, but there is no evidence this woman did anything wrong and smearing her memory for the sake of an "entertaining story" is not fair.

During the part about the farmer putting a new pole in when he was telling the cows "not to go near it or else he would eat that one !" She laughed so hard for nearly 10 mins and almost passed out. I meanwhile sober just had a blast keeping her laughing but once she calmed down we finished the great video!
