If this armor buff goes through, Winston play will be massive again -- and he already is boarderline the best tank if you know how to exploit the tactics covered today. Long vid, lots of work into this one, so if you did enjoy please drop a like :)
Your Overwatch sorry, but you forgot one thing. Have you ever seen xQc and Fissure turn their camera slightly when they play Rein or when they use Primal Rage with Winston? That actually increases the range of their melee attacks. (slightly) Just another tip to put into your Mastery Guide!
He ain't gonna be good again anyone can go Mcree or reaper or any of the autistic crap blizzard adds and the armor nerf also makes him easier to kill and you can't play the objective when you're easily killed
Winston Mastery Guide: 1) Leap on weak opponent and finish them off. 2) Spam "Did somebody say... peanut butter?" voice line while mercilessly teabagging. 3) Repeat steps 1 and 2.
This is the best Winston guide I have seen. Most videos only cover mechanics and don’t show enough examples of making space. I really like the Eichenwalde first point attack example for making space. The one mechanical tip I never saw anywhere else was that jump on Numbani Defence to help make your escape jump available sooner. Tanking is way too hard to learn in this game. Keep the tanking videos coming! (I laughed at your stalling vs Goats on Numbani. Really smart tactic.)
Neil Sasaki also get used to tracking ults. If only the main ones. How do you best play around nano blade or zarya dragon as a tank? Its usually not possible but u can add some value in the form of stall other than primal rage. Maybe dive them before they blade or grav to save ir team 10 or 5 seconds into lucio or ur own nano blade? Im a diamond wannabe masters scrub tho
This video is pure gold. I coach a mid-plat diamond team and our main tank player recently left, which forced us to put our sub DPS onto main tank. During goats this was fine, he can play an aggro rein no problem, but I am trying to work on his Winston and space making abilities, because Winston is played nothing like a DPS. This video is exactly what I needed to show him, with sooo many examples of picking engages and not face tanking like a rein would. I can tell how much time this video must have took, it is appreciated ❤️
I remember hearing about a comment about creators paying more attention to the pro scene, but I enjoyed the matchmaking focus for this one. “Set up your team to play death match because they will anyways” 😂 Good shit. Well put together and really helpful
That jump on Eichenwald is perfect for showing how a tanks job is to create space and how easily you did that just with one cool down. Love this guide. I really think if you all do this with more characters, the vids can become your most viewed vids easily. Great job guys!
This guide is so clear to understand. You guys do a good job explaining everything. I actually found Winston really tough to play, but this guide helped me tremendously. He's become one of my best tanks to play. Cheers to you
This was actually very well done, you seem to be quite intelligent when it comes to putting thoughts in to words. I know all of this, yet apply hardly any of it in my games. Very nice reminder that you are not supposed to take dmg as a tank, but create space.

I'm glad that winston is now getting a little more attention. I'm gold and for some reason when I'm playing tank and choose winston someone always has their doubts... They always want Rein/Dva but I know how to play winston very well
I know kzpy Lj. So many people sleep on or doubt Winston because of his damage but then I win the game for my team and all of the sudden they don’t hate Winston. People just don’t like seeing or being with something or somebody they don’t know. I’m a darn good tank and all the time when I play Hammond the same thing happens except I’m usually the one annoying the crap out the the rein so that by team can push in. Tanks are really underrated if their damage is low because according to a majority of the community, if it ain’t dps, it sucks.
Quite a nice guide, man. My only sugestion would be to try to wrap it up at the end, like with a little "resume", with the topics and tips. Would be nice to help us to get that printed on our memory. Something like: 1. Animation cancel 2. Shield dance 3. Avoid tanks 4. Narrow escapes 5. Drop engage (and higher ground) 6. Less is more 7. Primal rage
Nice to see a good Winston guide since I really enjoy playing him as a main tank due to his mobility. Getting some high-level insight on the important tech of his kit (and seeing I was already beginning to recognize them) makes me hope I'll be able to climb with him. Definitely gonna train that landing melee trick you talked about.
This is the best Winston guide I've ever seen! Great, simple yet effective tactics and the clear examples really make this guide shine. I'm definitely excited to implement these strategies asap! 10/10 awesome video!
10/10 best guide especially if you watch the whole thing because there is so many things, if not all things still apply even in August. There are so many things and details that still to this day can improve your play
Great video guys and just when I thought I understood most Winston mechanics you guys were able to point out things I didn’t even notice. The contesting idea around corners and places they can’t see you is a great strategy as well. Some times teams play so aggressively I’ve notice that as a Hammond Main I can roll behind the payload and just sit there for a while stalling the payload before they even notice me. It’s pretty funny to be honest especially when it goes on for 20-30 seconds.
Gold MT slowly coming into the ways of Winston here, just got done watching and taking notes the first time through. This revealed a bunch of stuff I never thought of, so we'll see how it goes! Thanks so much for this detailed guide.
One thing I don’t see mentioned often enough in regards to Primal Rage is his walking speed buff. Winston walks faster in primal, so for facing something like Tracer for example, you can walk towards them, faster than usual, forcing a blink oh r two out, then using jump. Useful in context, often a jump is just generally better, but knowing that you can catch squishes simply by walking at them, especially if, like me, you’re still practicing jump accuracy, it’s really really helpful to know. I’ve been playing Winston for. Few years now and only really learned this a couple months ago and it’s been huge beneficial to my mental understanding of the character. Double check people know this next time perhaps? Great video though, very helpful and got me pumped to play more Winston now!! I’ve been practicing too much Rein 😂
solid guide. important mentioning how fighting tanks is not a plan. also a big part of winston's game is using high ground a lot to damage people uncontested and use cover. and something else really important with winston is using jump pack just to go high and get info on enemy positions, and possibly bait them into coming onto you, then you can redirect yourself to fall back onto your team and bait them in
Learning the animation cancel makes winston feel so much cleaner. He's my fav main tank and his playstyle is very similar to my otp, doom, so mastering any new tech is a nice addition to the tool box
Legit one of the best OW guides I've seen on youtube in a while. Avoids all the fluff, talks straight to the point, nails important details. Would love to see more guides from Freedo for other characters.
Fissure, the winston god himself, has a really nice video showing this. Essentially, he says in a comp where you have better long range poke, you just hold space. In a comp where they have better long range poke, you initiate. You can jump to split the team, or you can jump past to draw aggro. Also, for primal rage, aim up to juggle.
This was a great guide, I’ve been teaching myself how to be better as Winston and saw a lot of tactics I’m doing right, but even more areas where I can improve, like shield dancing, objective play, melee + jump, etc. it was all great. Can confirm playing at lower ranks as Winston is oddly rewarding when those frags come thru. Excited to see if the “tick” damage buff will be coming to the PTR!
i absolutely love these incredibly in depth guides. i’d love if you guys did one of these for Tracer because it feels so futile playing her now that despite the nerfs brig is in almost every game. just to find any new mechanics or play styles popularized lately.
One other tip I never hear mentioned is instead of pressing W and shift to do a long jump (which everyone does that I've seen play him), press S and shift does a short distance. God for jumping someone in a corner in a smaller room. If someone is low health and trying to run away from you to W/shift means to go a short horizontal distance and you are doing a big jump, you add a tonne of additional height meaning you are airborne much longer and more prone to being sniped. In that same scenario, for low level players (me included) It's easier to track the target using a short jump as you can approach from a more horizontal plane on landing. You aren't dropping vertically on them staring directly at the ground to then have to adjust to track them. I learnt a lot from this vid it was great.
Great Video! SOOOOOOOoooo many overwatch guides just say "do this" but never show an example and so all the players (like myself) who don't know what that terminology means are confused and wasted their time. You, however, explain then show an example to give shape to that idea. It is fantastic. I wish there were more guides similar to this on youtube!!!
Love this guide really gave me insight into how Winston actually works, he was a tank I had real trouble playing because I didn't understand him so I was feeding watched this and pulled 3 free wins out of monkey thanks a lot for all the hard work
@Nova Flares but it is my dude clearly that's part of the cause because people are so ingrained that you need a front line shield that when they don't see that in lower ranks they suddenly feel that they are gonna lose same with the 2 2 2 comp they suddenly see only one healer or one tank people fucking flip and think that games but in most cases it honestly isn't because people fool them selves with this thinking understanding for higher ranks but you really see this below 2900
Its worth noting to "think as the enemy". Always assume the enemy is baiting you. Dont think it means u cant dive, just know that you cant play like dva can, having a get out of jail free card. Plus, its not YOUR main job to kill the healers. Its to skirmish with the dps. Ur genji, or whatever main dps you have that kills the healers. Just some notes from my experience Edit: also, dive from unexpected angles, its the worst thing when u dive and the whole enemy team looks right at you. Jump, then set up a crossfire. Drop on their main dps so ur dva or zar can shoot freely. Save ur shift and ur definitely always going to secure a fight
@@dominic2123 yes, but my point is that in high ranks, there's going to be a mccree or reaper with said healer. That mccree will kill you, no matter how well you place ur bubble he does like 330 dmg in a second, u only do 60
You just took 27 minutes of my life. And I'm really grateful. you got me to be a tank main, you took me out of low platinum & made me climb all the way to low masters just by posting your one tip for every character with (character name) Because of your guides I became a zarya & Reinhardt main (also other ones but this ones are the most remarkable ones) Thx dude. Really love your vids man. Good luck with the channel in 2019.
This is a brilliantly disguised comprehensive tank guide, learned a lot! As a fellow educator and man of culture 😋 this is very well delivered, concise and fun. Taking notes, well done! 🍻
Great guide. Im a master rank main tank player and even i got something out of this guide. The cart stall tactic is completely new to me and i havent really seen winstons do that.
Great video in general, but you guys did an excellent job of explaining how to play solo tank in 3 DPS comps. I think learning this could be a very powerful way of ranking up if I stack with good DPS
I watched your video one time so far, put it to use against goats and almost stopped them despite lack of teamwork on our side, FIRST EVER WINSTON GAME. [:
I know this video is from a while ago but I want to say thank you, these tips were very useful and after I watched this video when it came out, I played more winston with these tips and I was able to get out of silver, I am very close to hitting diamond now. I know it's not a high rank but I'm just happy I am out of silver. Thank you dude
About time someone made a good Winston guide, nobody seems to care for the under rated, Hulk ult, support rage machine, 5 most powerful lore character, and a shocking set of skills
Thank u 4 making this video, I feel as if most ppl think they can pick Winston and just leap to the enemy place a bubble zap as much as u can then CARRY
This really captures the essence of playing tanks - especially the line "letting my DPS carry." Tank play is so deep and complicated but you nailed it here. Well done Freedo... Well done
One thing that was missed that is huge is carrying momentum with Winston leap+jump. It allows you to have more control in your engagements and fling yourself to the edge of your bubbles to start the footsie game right away.
I'm taking a break from Overwatch but it's funny to see comp is still the same. Just run whatever is easy and meta then win. Not many people have the game sense to counter play and you having to make like your 5th Winston guide is proof.
Great vid. I’ve been trying to figure out how to play Winston in plat without having to switch to rein. I can use a lot of these techniques in my comp games
The melee when you land doesn’t actually do more dps because the Tesla gun is still delayed even though the animation is canceled. It does more burst damage but the same overall damage as just using the Tesla cannon the whole time. What is really important is landing directly on top of someone to get full landing damage.
Fun fact: the punch-leap combo does NOT increase dps, in fact, it can actually reduce dps if targets are too spread out or the enemy moves away from you mid-leap, like at 2:44 The reason you do it is for ammo conservation and burst damage, but it’s not ideal in every situation so dont just build it as muscle memory, you should consciously think in each leap on if it’s better to punch or not.
Another tip: You can make short jump-pack jumps by holding S. I'm a Winston main in Diamond and only recently realized you could do this. No more jumping across the room when you want to jump someone a few feet away from you.
i wanted to start playing more main tank, but i dont have that much fun in playing rein... and i couldn t find enough examples to show me how to play winston. i never liked those maps with lots of highground like gibraltiii, but after this guide, i wanna play this map so bad now xD. this guide is very informative, easy explanation, lots of example how to kite/.... ! thanks a lot!
One tip I like to utilise that you didnt go over was to use your leap at 1 second left in primal if you really need to get out since leap will reset right after
Keladinus Scrub or just more damage in general, I've been studying gorillas for a bit and the average gorilla packs enough force in a punch to shatter human limbs, so a genetically enhanced gorilla would be able to do more I know, I'm a nerd
something personal to say about winston melee, true you will want to use it 90% of the time while landing, but there are some specific occasions where you don't want to. specifically when the enemy is so low that a melee will take more time than the zap (even with animation cancel since meleeing DOES stop the zap for a minimal amount of time, or when the jump is a bit off target and you're landing near a target but not directly on it. you also want to always melee the enemy when they're below 30 HP, since melting 30 hp with zap is slower than using melee. Also, the main thing this video didn't cover is how to properly handle your jumps, such as 180 to avoid the widow or hanzo HS while diving, S-jump (wich is a short leap) , mid air movement management and landing positions, apart from that this covers all the basic. naisu
My personal winston tip for ps4 for the meleeing when you land your jump is to bind melee to L2 on winston specifically for quick action. It's an empty trigger for him anyways. Food for thought 👍😁

@@dominic2123 yes, but my point is that in high ranks, there's going to be a mccree or reaper with said healer. That mccree will kill you, no matter how well you place ur bubble he does like 330 dmg in a second, u only do 60
You just took 27 minutes of my life.
And I'm really grateful.
you got me to be a tank main, you took me out of low platinum & made me climb all the way to low masters just by posting your one tip for every character with (character name)
Because of your guides I became a zarya & Reinhardt main (also other ones but this ones are the most remarkable ones)
Thx dude.
Really love your vids man.
Good luck with the channel in 2019.
Winston is all about knowing your jumps and when to melee. Great guide guys!
One of the best OW guide ive ever watched, thx
Winston tutorial during the middle of a massive Reaper resurgence...
Great video in general, but you guys did an excellent job of explaining how to play solo tank in 3 DPS comps. I think learning this could be a very powerful way of ranking up if I stack with good DPS
Thank you for this insightful look into all the pieces of Winston's kit.
I watched your video one time so far, put it to use against goats and almost stopped them despite lack of teamwork on our side, FIRST EVER WINSTON GAME. [:
Winston is the only main tank I enjoy using. I didn't know about the melee animation cancel, gonna try that out next time.
Brohamut 85 how is he your fav but u dont know the most common thing a winston main should know
Idk why but i find it hilarious when Winston dies in battle, like the grunt he makes when he dies
@@Wolverine-ky9gk Which one do you mean, has a few funny ones tbh hahaha
Amazing guide! Been wanting to play more Winston and this'll help a ton!
I know this video is from a while ago but I want to say thank you, these tips were very useful and after I watched this video when it came out, I played more winston with these tips and I was able to get out of silver, I am very close to hitting diamond now. I know it's not a high rank but I'm just happy I am out of silver. Thank you dude
and this is why Your Overwatch dominates all the other overwatch channels on youtube. The quality of this content is bar none. Thank you guys.
Absolutely the best Winston guide I've ever seen. Possibly the best character guide. Well done.
"You don't really have to aim"
*30 seconds later*
"Make sure you aim"
So for Winston it’s 1) Jump 2) Use Tesla in air 3) Punch right before landing 4) set barrier 5) finish off weak enemies
Finally, more Winston content! There's not enough supplementary Winston info to pro VODs
Thank you for the tips! Gonna help my Winston game dramatically
Tip: Bind melee to secondary fire
Im doing that rn
Shield is better
Are we gonna see this kinda vid for other heroes? This is one of my favorite vids on this channel.
About time someone made a good Winston guide, nobody seems to care for the under rated, Hulk ult, support rage machine, 5 most powerful lore character, and a shocking set of skills
I’m in Gold at the moment and I really want to be better as Winston, and this guide helped me a lot, thank u so much :)
Thank u 4 making this video, I feel as if most ppl think they can pick Winston and just leap to the enemy place a bubble zap as much as u can then CARRY
This really captures the essence of playing tanks - especially the line "letting my DPS carry."
Tank play is so deep and complicated but you nailed it here. Well done Freedo... Well done
that follow jump on mercy at 5:55 was beautiful
3:42 Finally, all my 4th grade Ring Around The Rosie prowess is coming to fruition...
Lmao
One thing that was missed that is huge is carrying momentum with Winston leap+jump. It allows you to have more control in your engagements and fling yourself to the edge of your bubbles to start the footsie game right away.
I'm taking a break from Overwatch but it's funny to see comp is still the same. Just run whatever is easy and meta then win. Not many people have the game sense to counter play and you having to make like your 5th Winston guide is proof.
Great vid. I’ve been trying to figure out how to play Winston in plat without having to switch to rein. I can use a lot of these techniques in my comp games
GREAT VIDEO. Can’t wait to try to use some of these tricks to rise through the ranks
i love these tanking tips but what id love even more is a tip as a tank aganist reaper
Just avoid the Reaper, and use voice chat to consistently and aggressively call out his position. Have your teammate play McCree
The melee when you land doesn’t actually do more dps because the Tesla gun is still delayed even though the animation is canceled. It does more burst damage but the same overall damage as just using the Tesla cannon the whole time. What is really important is landing directly on top of someone to get full landing damage.
I just jump dive 1v5 and pray.
AND WHY IS ANA NOT WITH ME!
El Bandito good one 😂😂😂
I have been waiting for this for months, almost years
Fun fact: the punch-leap combo does NOT increase dps, in fact, it can actually reduce dps if targets are too spread out or the enemy moves away from you mid-leap, like at 2:44 The reason you do it is for ammo conservation and burst damage, but it’s not ideal in every situation so dont just build it as muscle memory, you should consciously think in each leap on if it’s better to punch or not.
Really good video man
ThumBS UP!
Another tip:
You can make short jump-pack jumps by holding S. I'm a Winston main in Diamond and only recently realized you could do this. No more jumping across the room when you want to jump someone a few feet away from you.
I can't believe that so much of these 27 min were absolute gold advice !
dude im like low gold but this seems like its actually helping when people listem to it. sounds like great strats, defo gonna try this
Another good tip for being safe is to jump on roofs that you slide on helps with the jump cool down and helps surprise enemys
i wanted to start playing more main tank, but i dont have that much fun in playing rein... and i couldn t find enough examples to show me how to play winston. i never liked those maps with lots of highground like gibraltiii, but after this guide, i wanna play this map so bad now xD. this guide is very informative, easy explanation, lots of example how to kite/.... ! thanks a lot!
One tip I like to utilise that you didnt go over was to use your leap at 1 second left in primal if you really need to get out since leap will reset right after
The quick play that i played right after this I used the tips and we rolled them in 2 minutes and won!
Winston's melee should deal headshot damage, rt if you agree
Keladinus Scrub or just more damage in general, I've been studying gorillas for a bit and the average gorilla packs enough force in a punch to shatter human limbs, so a genetically enhanced gorilla would be able to do more
I know, I'm a nerd
This ain’t twitter dumbass
something personal to say about winston melee, true you will want to use it 90% of the time while landing, but there are some specific occasions where you don't want to. specifically when the enemy is so low that a melee will take more time than the zap (even with animation cancel since meleeing DOES stop the zap for a minimal amount of time, or when the jump is a bit off target and you're landing near a target but not directly on it. you also want to always melee the enemy when they're below 30 HP, since melting 30 hp with zap is slower than using melee.
Food for thought 👍😁
great video! appreciate the effort you put into it!
Awesome video - thanks for the upload!
