Cooking in space: whole red rice and turmeric chicken
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti is currently living on board the International Space Station for her long duration mission Futura. Food is an important item in space, also on the psychological side; that's why astronauts are allowed a certain quantity of the so-called "bonus food" of their choice that reminds them of their home cooking tastes. We asked Samantha to show us how she manages to cook one of her bonus food recipes in microgravity: whole red rice with peas and chicken turmeric.

Morbid comment. People balk at animal cruelty unless it tastes good then they’re all for it. Shame on esa for liking this.

True
What if person is tired of peoples
I think it was Chris Hadfield (or maybe Scott Kelly) who was saying that after coming back to Earth you need to remember to put stuff down after you're done with it, and not just let go of it to float as you do in space.
I think I've heard stories of astronauts trying to toss stuff to each other and having it drop straight down.
I think it was Chris that said that. It must be weird coming back to Earth after living in 0 g for so long!

True thats a good question
One astronaut said you don't have an appetite for 3 days and feel sick to your stomach after coming back to earth, maybe that's why those aliens crashed in Roswell...

It happens, i'm serious
I showed this to my mom with full screen hiding title. She thought of it as a new recipe but spooked so badly once tortilla & other packet started floating.

I know. I tried turning my table sideways like that. Not the most efficient way to keeps things from falling off the table
Nope, however in my frustration I did find out that when thrown hard enough, the food sticks to the wall. Next best thing if you ask me!
MrSkinnyWhale are u in space?? If not then how will the tortilla float
A big advantage of eating in space is that a delicious piece will never fell to the floor
Right, but It can fall on the ceiling! :-)

+Nissan Karki yeah, weightless for about a minute at a time...that's why the hair is permed in place. The plane that they film these on only gives about a minute of weightlessness between climbs and dives. Its a cool show though...not sure if its worth the 20 billion a year...but it is quite entertaining.

CrusaderKnight91 How this is relevant to his comment?
if you leave the food in your mouth , does it still float ? so anything you eat will float inside your stomach ?
MrOnlyforcommenting Yes, everything they eat floats inside their stomachs. That's why astronauts feel queasy/nauseous first 2 days in space. They call it "stomach awareness".
Ikr! Haha, Gravity has nothing to with digestion though. Different muscles do it starting from your mouth the esophagus pushing it down further. You can eat upside down and will still be able to swallow it. :)

+European Space Agency, ESA couldnt you guys get a whole chicken breast in space? or does everything have to be mashed up in such a way, I would expect sandwiches to not be so mashed up, like sliced bread, whole chicken breast, a slice of cheese, a leaf of lettuce. I know you said crumbs are a problem in space, im gonna look up the reasons why now.
+C3PO's Bottom Crumbs are a problem, but I guess whole, cooked pieces of chicken should be doable.
sharpfang I know right! We have to get our astronauts some better food up there, the way they live, down to how they brush their teeth is deplorable. Im gonna send a rare rum cake recipe to Houston, pronto! lol
C3PO's Bottom Bit
I believe something like a 'cool cheesecake' would be quite acceptable; as long as it doesn't produce crumbs, that should be okay.
sharpfang I think that might spoil, you gotta use real cheese for that, sounds doable enough though, they said it costs so much to send supplies up there, I think a few slices of cheesecake should make the trip and be eaten upon arrival! Agreed

Are space faring generations going to think us losers for watching a video of a woman making a rice and chicken burrito in zero gravity?
I love Julia Childs. Watching her cook food in Space would've been a hoot!
***** True, yet some things are timeless while others are unimpressive except for their novelty. This video reminds me of the scene from Apollo 13 where the astronauts were filming their daily activities not realizing that they were preempted for Football. I know I'm being too critical, but this wasn't interesting.
I'd be interested in an unedited live-stream of their day to day work and lives, but that's asking for way too much of these people who have better things to do.

Cool! But honestly if it were me, after the 3rd tortilla flies off, I'd have given up and spooned from the pouches. XD

Isn't it hard to swallow food in zero gravity???? Hats off to all the astronauts! You are really fantabulous!
No luckily our swallowing and digestive system works by contractions of the digestive tract muscles, it doesn't depend on gravity. However our muscles and skeletons very much need gravity so that's why astronauts need to do frequent exercises on the space station, and they come back to earth weakened still.
HER: I AM GONNA EAT YOU😂😂
FOOD: NAH! I GOTTA GO ,,,,FLIED
I got a question regarding to this video. How does astronaut wash their dishes???
+Saff Hall The don't use any dishes - they eat straight from the packaging the food comes in. The packaging is placed in their rubbish - which in turn is placed in a visiting cargo spacecraft, such as the Progress. After undocking, the Progress spacecraft and all its contents burn up on reentering Earth's atmosphere.
