Cooking in space: whole red rice and turmeric chicken

  • ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti is currently living on board the International Space Station for her long duration mission Futura. Food is an important item in space, also on the psychological side; that's why astronauts are allowed a certain quantity of the so-called "bonus food" of their choice that reminds them of their home cooking tastes. We asked Samantha to show us how she manages to cook one of her bonus food recipes in microgravity: whole red rice with peas and chicken turmeric.

      ***** True, yet some things are timeless while others are unimpressive except for their novelty. This video reminds me of the scene from Apollo 13 where the astronauts were filming their daily activities not realizing that they were preempted for Football. I know I'm being too critical, but this wasn't interesting.
      I'd be interested in an unedited live-stream of their day to day work and lives, but that's asking for way too much of these people who have better things to do.

(aboard the ISS, one of the videos here on RUclips, I think it was Chris Hadfield) Not to mention that would be very detrimental to their health, sounds like bullshit to me. NASA and other space agencies wouldn't do that to their astro/cosmonauts. And I wouldn't say sacrifice, who wouldn't go to space if they had the chance to become astronauts in the first place?

    Isn't it hard to swallow food in zero gravity???? Hats off to all the astronauts! You are really fantabulous!

    • @AriaHarmony
      @AriaHarmony Год назад

      No luckily our swallowing and digestive system works by contractions of the digestive tract muscles, it doesn't depend on gravity. However our muscles and skeletons very much need gravity so that's why astronauts need to do frequent exercises on the space station, and they come back to earth weakened still.

    • @EuropeanSpaceAgency
      @EuropeanSpaceAgency  8 лет назад +49

      +Saff Hall The don't use any dishes - they eat straight from the packaging the food comes in. The packaging is placed in their rubbish - which in turn is placed in a visiting cargo spacecraft, such as the Progress. After undocking, the Progress spacecraft and all its contents burn up on reentering Earth's atmosphere.
