For some reason I keyed up this song right after scattering my mother's ashes in the waters of the SW Florida mangroves - while my sister and I floated there in our kayaks. Turned out oddly appropriate and will always bring that magic moment back.
I met an older fella named Mr. Harper years back. Loved old western movies and baseball. Good, righteous and God-fearing man, awesome father to his daughter, Ev and a great and true friend to whoever met him. When he passed, Ev asked me to do his funeral. I'm no preacher, just a picker/singer. I asked God to welcome Mr. Harper home and sang this song for him. The whimsy just sorta seemed to fit him well. Miss you, Mr. Harper. Hope you're up there with Roy and Trigger havin' a grand old time.
Lyle does an intro to this song where he speaks of how his parents encouraged his dreams. We were at a show a few months ago where the audience burst into applause as he talked of his folks and Lyle stopped and took a step back, he was clearly respecting a moment that his fans applauded his parents. Lovett is a wonderful musician but for my wife and I the icing on the cake is how respectful and well mannered he is.
Absolutely , soul touching song . This is a song I would like to leave this world playing in the background , sitting on my arm chair a steaming hot coffee , my Akita named badshah lying near my chair. Beautiful voice . Lyle the best😮
My son's dad that passed( i miss him).. we were driving up to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His brother Dusty Twin was getting married. MONTE GRABBED LYLE LOVETT'S CASETTE OUT OF HIS BACKPACK AND PUT IT INTO MY RADIO! WE LISTENED TO THIS SONG IN CANADA..WIDOWS ROLLED DOWN, BREEZE IN OUR HAIR, MY SON AND DAUGHTER WERE ASLEEP IN THEIR CARSEATS..❤
This song is my mantra when I'm stuck in a stressful situation, or just somewhere I'd rather not be. "I'm on a pony on a boat. I'm on a pony on a boat." Yay for Lyle Lovett!
This song has become something of a touchstone for me with the memory of my father-in-law who passed away a few years ago. He was a Navy vet, boat lover, something of a cowboy in Wyoming, and an all-around great person. I miss him a lot and this song always makes me think of him and lets me smile.
Gosh, I love this song. It says so much about freedom, friendship, and self-reliance. A couple of years ago, I bought a boat -- something I had wanted for my entire adult life. As I pulled out from the dock the first time, I thought to myself, "Kiss my a@@...."
Lyle Lovett is such a great artist and humble, decent man . I came to his music late in my life , but he's a main-stay with me now . It seems he never got the recognition he's deserved , but his following is loyal and fully appreciative of this fine artist . George Lewis, Sr
This song was on the last playlist my brother ever made for his Barefoot Blues Hour radio show on WERU in Maine. After a 36+ year career on the radio, Mike passed unexpectedly in July 2022. I’d never heard the song but loved Lyle Lovett. Mike also had a show called Boat Talk and was a boat builder and sailor. I listen to this song almost every day, smile and tear up. He had a boat named ‘magine. That your boat? ‘Magine.
Sorry to be offtopic but does someone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
I saw he perform live for the first time in 1998. I feel in love with him. I completely understood how Julia Roberts loved this man. He has so much charm. Not to mention the musical genius he is. I went to concerts every chance I got 20 years ago in college. I have seen over 100 live performances. His was the best hands down. I had never heard of him. I have seen him 4 times total. He is amazing! Something about him and his big band makes me feel so tranquil.
Forget about Lyle Lovett haven't listened to him in years...heard this song tonight in the movie. Still Alice..I dropped everything to find this song ...so talented thank you Lyle
I caught this cat July 2 at Humphries by the bay in San Diego. I'd never heard any of his songs or so I thought. My sister gave me some great seats she'd bought and said check this dude out. Wow!!! he was fantastic-what a wonderful musician and funny guy to boot. I am now forever a fan. One of America's greatest singer songwriters and all it took was one listening.
We were living up the street from Humphreys, easy walking distance, back then. In the early 2000's I caught his show out at Vejas with his Large Band. My Gawd they're good! I really miss San Diego!!
He was at TAMU while I was working on my Ph.D.; I would often see him in the halls of the English building. Would gladly listen to him perform at "Grins" in College Station; they'd "pass the hat" after performances. Was enchanted then by his unassuming manner and obvious talent. . . and he hasn't changed.
You beautiful perfect man. You sing the words that I lose in my dreams, and you help me to remember everything that is good in my life when I awake. I thank you.
I’m here because this is my favorite song in Lyle’s formidable catalogue. One of my favorite songs of all times. Up there with El Paso and Station to Station.
I can't articulate what makes this song so magical and so evocotive of such strong emotions. I guess it's capturing a childlike musing viewed from an adult perspective. Or something...;-) Damn, If I had a boat I'd head on out to Texas. And if I had a pony we'd go listen to ol' Lyle. Me upon my pony on my boat. I'd LOVE to see Lyle & his big band! Stop off in Tyler for briscuit so good it'll make you slap yo' mama, hit Austin for a couple days scoping out new bands & bliss out to Lyle!
In, about 1994, I was at a concert in eastern Canada. The show was over, we were slowly leaving the venue, and that guitar and steel guitar came over the speaker. I was vaguely familiar with him, but a couple of bars into the intro, I knew it was him, and I took in the song. The next day, I went to the record store, and bought Lyle Lovett, Pontiac, and Joshua , Judges, Ruth. Needless to say, I've been a fan ever since; I travelled to Portland, Maine, and saw him and the Large Band in 2004 ( 2 hours with no opening act ).
and yet, this song was used a number of times in the movie, "Still Alice." It's a touching movie about the deterioration of a woman with Alzheimer's Disease.
Wow...ive known about this guy and have heard his name a 1000 times...but never, ever listened to one single song he's recorded in the past 25yrs....till tonite.....good stuff!!
What Pete said ... I started with Mumford and Sons, which led to Steve Winwood, then to Willis Alan Ramsey (one of my absolute favorites ... check HIM out!) and now to Lyle Lovett. I think I'll wander off to Eric Taylor next ... and then ??? It's WAY late .. I need to get some sleep sometime but this "rabbit hole" is just too much fun!
One of my husband's fav songs. He used to build boats before becoming disabled. When he dies I wil have him creamated and put him in a paper boat and set it on fire in the Gulf. I won't burn his kayak
A plus... Someone said I needed to check your music out again and I'm quite glad I did. I really dig that song and I'm looking forward to your TVZ Cobers and all of your music. Very good song writer.
I don't consider myself a fan of country music. However, Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel and Lyle Lovett are artists that use the country music genre as their pallete to express their artistry. This is real music, not hick-hop.
+lowell mccormick I was a cosmic cowgirl as a youngster. I love the singer songwriters. Check out Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Iris Dement etc and see what you think;
+lowell mccormick You should check out other Texas/Red Dirt Artists, since the 3 you mentioned fit into that category. (Asleep at the wheel is from Virginia I think, but they moved to Texas so we'll count them.)
This song is a lot like Autumn to May "Oh once I had a little dog, his color it was brown I taught him for to whistle, to sing and dance and run His legs they were fourteen yards long, his ears so very wide Around the world in half a day, upon him I could ride."
This morning I was behind two middle aged gents at a lunch counter, and one had on a tee shirt with a cowboy, a pony and a boat. I said you must be a Lyle Lovett fan. He turned around and grinned. Checking Lyle's official web site I see NO mention of merchandise. Maybe such are available at his concerts, but I wasn't able to find any reference to them. Would love to get a couple if anyone knows how. Thanks.
I could listen to this over and over. Someone needs to put this in a movie just because he said it would never happen. 😊
Someone did…Still Alice (2014)
For some reason I keyed up this song right after scattering my mother's ashes in the waters of the SW Florida mangroves - while my sister and I floated there in our kayaks. Turned out oddly appropriate and will always bring that magic moment back.

Imagine trying to sing after that!
From this song I fell in love with Lyle in 1987. Opened live in Boulder for Bonnie Raitt. Magic. Pure, pure magic.
Hello how are doing today ?
someone asked Bob Dylan "What song do you love that you wish you had written?" He replied "If I Had A Boat".
Absolutely , soul touching song . This is a song I would like to leave this world playing in the background , sitting on my arm chair a steaming hot coffee , my Akita named badshah lying near my chair. Beautiful voice . Lyle the best😮

My fav artist. I took my son to see Lyle and Bonnie Raitt in NJ. Our first concert together. We will be dancing to this at his wedding. TY Lyle.

I love the combination of sentiment and humor. Could listen to Lyle for hours.

It's definitely not just you. And I'm not even sure WHY it gets me, but it does...
Wonderful ! such poetry ~
What Pete said ... I started with Mumford and Sons, which led to Steve Winwood, then to Willis Alan Ramsey (one of my absolute favorites ... check HIM out!) and now to Lyle Lovett. Such fantastic imagery !
Such a great song. Such a great performance. A real superstar.
This song brings me to piece with myself
I ain't no lady but I'll be your wife! Haha. Your the best and one of my favorites! ❤
Love this man and his songs.
Hello how are you doing today ?
Wow!! Now I may have to go see this guy here in Dallas this Friday!!
So underappreciated.
One of my husband's fav songs. He used to build boats before becoming disabled. When he dies I wil have him creamated and put him in a paper boat and set it on fire in the Gulf. I won't burn his kayak
+kinky won Kinky Won ftw
Right back at ya. I love a pedal steel played that fine.
The original. Tom Rush does this in concert, prefaced with the words "Lyle isn't like the other children."
This is the sexiest man alive
Love Lyle Lovett, his voice and music, so amazing, sexy, quirky and adorable!xoxo
A plus... Someone said I needed to check your music out again and I'm quite glad I did. I really dig that song and I'm looking forward to your TVZ Cobers and all of your music. Very good song writer.

+lowell mccormick
wow! that's sooo big of you
to extend your consideration of a whole genre of music so generously in your non-hick way
Thanks B, but I'm not non-hick. Heck, I've even got a tractor.
+lowell mccormick You should check out other Texas/Red Dirt Artists, since the 3 you mentioned fit into that category. (Asleep at the wheel is from Virginia I think, but they moved to Texas so we'll count them.)
Texas genius!

Lyle wrote the song. He's more talented than DM could ever dream to be!
I love that he said it could never be in a movie, and it was a large feature in "The Interpreter" with Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman. HA!
This morning I was behind two middle aged gents at a lunch counter, and one had on a tee shirt with a cowboy, a pony and a boat. I said you must be a Lyle Lovett fan. He turned around and grinned. If you listen very carefully you can hear the gremlins in LLs head. God Bless Lyle & the gremlins.
that's not just a good song. that's a great song.
