New Drone! Why I chose the DJI Spark over the Mavic Air

- After crashing my previous drone I've finally got myself a new one and after debating whether to get a DJI Spark again or upgrade to the new Mavic Air, I decided to get the Spark again.
In this video I discuss why I chose the DJI Spark over the Mavic Air and why I think it is a better drone for most people's needs.
I discuss all the differences between the two drones: 4K video vs 1080 HD, 3 axis vs 2 axis gimbal, RAW vs Jpeg and image quality, size and portability and even some of the advantages the Spark has over the Mavic Air such as USB charging.

4k is more about the ability to manipulate the video in post processing. You can zoom in without losing quality. It allows more options basically
Great news, the maiden flight was yesterday and a success, put her up again today and even better, I flew out of beginner mode and WOW❤️ this baby surprised me, it was breezy and she was rock solid, my confidence is building.

I've had the spark for a few months now and whenever I show people some of the content I've created, short films, vlogs, they are always amazed that the little spark was able to capture such crisp shots. It's about the lighting and ND filters. Great video Chris, the spark is still good for now!

Thanks for this video. I was watching a bunch of review videos for a couple of weeks and almost didn’t go with the spark. I love Peter McKinnon, but his review almost discouraged me from getting it. But I thought it about it from his perspective compared to mine, and I could see why he wouldn’t like it, and why I might like it.
I Am Smallfry this video wasn't meant to bash the Mavic air, just get people to think about what they actually need and get the one that best suits their needs. And just explaining why the Spark was better for me

Interesting and honest compare. One final reason to get a Spark is you can buy it now and then wait for the Mavic Pro II whenever it comes out. It would be sad to spend the higher coin on an an Air, only to find out you should have waited.

CarlosVanVegas Thanks. I'm not too sure to be honest, some time it seems really nice and others it's really choppy. Moving slowly always makes for a nicer shot though

Just as we don't need the latest mobile phone for everyday, we don't need the most advanced computers, same goes for drones.
Yup, same with camera manufacturers releasing cameras with more megapixels all the time. More than most people would ever need.

4K can be overkill for some but the Mavic Air alllow to shoot at 1080p/120fps... That's something the Spark cant do. For me, just for that, i prefer the Air. Also the Air have 3 axis gimbals and the Spark have a 2 axis gimbal.
Extra FPS is a bonus but as stated panning shots are very rarely used in motion shots

About 3 weeks ago i got a spark fly more combo and an extra battery. I was looking hard at the mavic air and parrot bebop 2 power. Then decided on spark. So far I been having a blast with this drone! All the videos on my channel are from my spark.

Great vid, I was ready to buy a Spark but was then thinking should I get the Mavic Air but you have made up my mind. The additional features of the Mavic are more than what I need at this time, as someone who is just starting out in the hobby.
People forget that pretty much every one crashes their first drone too 😉
Love my Spark - I use it mainly for aerial photography. I changed the WiFi to 2.4 ghz and the range dramatically increased. Great little drone.

How is the range for the two compare? Im not to worried about battery as much as i plan to carry multiple. I currently have been messing around with a tello just to get into it and was curious which would be the better upgrade.

I still love my Spark. It's a year old now. I would love to have 4K, but the 1080p on the Spark is pretty nice anyway. Plus it's inexpensive.

same here, didnt get the mavic because i have some cameras that shoot 4k and they take forever to render and take so much space so i leave it on 1080. no point getting 4k if i cant use it
I Wear A Fez Now Yeah I have a high spec laptop and rendering HD footage takes long enough. 4k sounds and looks very nice but the reality of handling it is more than it's worth at the moment

I bought the Mavic Air quad March 12,2018. maiden flight is this Sunday, weather permitting. I've been watching tons of videos to become familiar with this beauty, it is NOW time to put it up in the air. I am so excited to have this drone and anxious to see how it performs.

Nice video. I'm trying to make a decision about the same drones. Although here in Austria the 300g of the spark would be able to fly it 10m higher than the air. But the apas and rear sensors make it a tough decision!

As someone with both, I will definitely keep both and use them both, but even in this video, you can see a huge difference between 1080p and 4k (or even 2.7). Is it worth the extra money? That's an individual decision.
Dude! You made me feel better of not selling my Spark for the Mavic AIr! Great video! How do you tether your controller with your phone because I feel like it does not read my iphone and controller when i turn off the wifi for reliable connection than using wifi?
Brownie Sibrian Thanks, pleased to hear that. Usually just connect to the WiFi on the controller from my phone. However I've also bought an OTG cable which I use a lot as it's a lot more stable.

Brownie Sibrian once you've paired the controller to the drone it should just be a case of connecting to the WiFi on the controller.
I have to admit though sometimes I have to 'forget' the network and then reconnect

Selling the controller could be embarrassing if you need to return it under guarantee if they need the whole product to be returned? I'd wait till the warranty was out were I you...
Re RAW files as opposed to JPGs - if you have blown highlights or indeed blacked out shadow areas, PP can pull back lots of detail from the RAWs but comparatively very little from JPGs.
Nowadays JPG compression is very good, and compression artifacts are far less intrusive than they used to be. But that highlight business especially can mean the difference between rescuing a shot and having to "make do". I shoot into the light a lot, so JPGs for me aren't such a hot choice because of the above. Anyway, enjoy your Spark!

I have a mavic air and you said you can not take off/land a mavic air in your hand. I take off and land from my hand all the time with my Mavic air. I rarely take off with it sitting on the ground since it sits so close to the ground. Great video.

Filming in 4K gives you options in post that you don't have with the Spark. You can crop down to a quarter of the screen and still be at 1080.

great video and appreciate the effort and I completely agree with your opinion on Spark over the Air. I cannot justify the cost as have the Mavic Pro also and if I needed 4K would utilize it. The spark is also the funnest DJI drone FULL STOP. With an api mod to Spark is capable of over 2.5Kms in fcc+

Thanks 😄 I wouldn't accurately be able to comment on the toughness though. With that in mind though, bear in mind that you will crash your first drone eventually. It's almost inevitable

I use 4k quite a bit and both Sky and BT both broadcast in UHD for sport and movies

Jim Palmer yeah I'd be careful with sport mode it's insane and that's how I crashed my drone haha. Most shots look best nice and slow and smooth anyway
So Jim, how do you like your Spark? First, I live in Canton, OH. I also own a Mavic Pro but looking for something smaller. The Air just getting me too close to my Mavic Pro. I also motovlog and would like to take the Spark with me on my motorcycle club rides. I want to wish Chris the best of luck. Love the British accent... :)
What about range? How far can you fly out the spark in comparison to the mavic air?
I don't know exact figures as I don't think the figures DJI claim on any of their drones are very accurate in the real world. However the Mavic Air is slightly further.
Love your bit on 4K here in Australia it’s the same the internet is so slow just getting 1080p videos off RUclips and the size of the files is massive with my GoPro I never shoot in 4K

i got the spark for the same reasons like you! i have the spark now for 8 month and i'm happy with sparky! does a great job and still is the best travel-drone on the market. with mavic air you likely run into troubles first of the extreme loudness which annoys people and myself. spark is underrated by far but that's how things run in this world. it's not always the most expensive that's good. at the end, the only thing that counts is the footage taken and not the quality of it. most drone footage lack of flying skills etc and try to compensate this lack with image quality

I picked up my Spark with the fly more kit for $529 @ Best Buy. I think it’s a fantastic drone for a beginner like me I will probably upgrade once I become more proficient in flying and filming. Thanks for the video Chris.

I've bought a spark+remote at 399USD for the exact reasons you've pointed out. One point to add.... the cost of ownership will probably get down to about 200 bucks 6 months from now if there is a price drop on the Mavic Air from 799 to 599, and I change my mind to upgrade at that time.

So i have had the phantom standard learnt on that, wanted smaller for motorcycle luggage so went spark, great drone nice camera but i was peed off with no 3 axis so in the end i went for mavic air and love it. If only they had the spark with 3 axis i would not have sold it
One feature you didn’t discuss was flight time. I guess the Magic Air would be a step up from the Spark. I personally own a Spark so I appreciate your arguments. Thanks for the video.
Yeah the flight time is slightly higher with the Mavic Air but it's not massively so. Around 4 minutes I believe
