All came down to how amazing ESAM’s edgeguarding was this set. Got so many early stocks of both characters
I can't help but wonder what would have happened if Leo had started with Joker, or switched after Game 1. He was turning up and keeping it super close with Joker, but he had 0 wiggle room because he lost his first two games right out of the gate.
Still, that was all ESAM's skill. Definitely showing that he's still a huge force to be reckoned with.
We can't necessarily say he was playing his food - nonetheless this is great data.
it's most likely because leo is absolutely so stubbornly confident with byleth that he lost this one, switching to joker too late.
but "ifs" and "could haves" are only good in the moment, and just thoughts after the fact
Fully Leo's choice to go byleth for the first two games. Next time he faces off against ESAM, he will know not to go light in the beginning
I feel like a lot of the stuff with Byleth was just missing punishes by a few pixels and it added up over time.
I don’t even think there’s much to wonder. It’s very unlikely that ESAM is taking 3 games off Leo’s Joker. Fortunately he only had to squeeze out one here.
Esam is playing a much different pika then from what I have seen. He's reacting more instead of just rushing them down.

Well, the problem is Byleth is extremely dangerous to fight off stage, her tether will gimp you if she catches you. Along with her side B, which gives her plenty protection. Few characters have a recovery/speed good enough to get in and out to punish Byleth off stage. Hence why no top players challenge MKleo off stage with byleth. Pikachu just happens to have the best recovery for doing like that.

Fun fact: ESAM is up 3-2 offline against MkLeo, he beat Leo's Lucina last stock Game 5 at GOML 2019, Leo beat him with Joker last stock Game 5 at Shine 2019, ESAM reverse 3-0'd MkLeo's Marth at Ult Summit 2, Leo won Game 5 at Genesis 7 as Joker, and now ESAM beat beat his Byleth and Joker 3-1 here
Edit: 4-2 NOW WTF? I did not expect ESAM to win the tournament, he just 3-1'd him back to back and this time finally beat his Joker in a full set

I do find it unfortunate that esam fights leos joker less than any other player, he has yet to take a set off Leo going only joker

I completely agree with the commentators regarding the characters and tiers. Ike wasn't top tier, yet Leo destroyed people with Ike. Byleth isn't top tier, but Leo makes the character look high tier. However, give Leo a top tier like Joker, and the gap widens when the best player is using a top 5 character in the game.

That's up for debate. Even the commentators said "at best" high tier for Byleth. Really, it's because Leo makes Byleth look great. And I enjoy watching his Byleth far more than Joker, for sure.

Well, that's subjective obviously.
As someone with absolutely no bias whatsoever and who enjoys watching Byleth, I can easily say that Leo makes Byleth look good. But the character is probably upper mid tier at best.
5:21 I checked ultimate frame data as to why this bair on this edgeguard sequence didn't hit, the 2 frames that Joker was actually touching pika during the bair were actually the 2 frames that are in between the multihit of pikas bair. You can go frame by frame and check.
I always found MKLeo to be such an interesting person to watch because he’s not super flashy but his fundamentals are damn near impeccable. His spacing, positioning and timing are so good, it makes sense he plays byleth.

I don't think I've seen so many Rebel's guard from MkLeo before wow. Those frame 3 counters really coming in clutch. Arsene gets frame 3 invincibility on down B because DLC has to be better than vanilla counters

@@LeafysHere I wouldn't say it's bad it is just very exploitable, it punished people for pressing buttons of all kinds but a lot of Joker's use it anytime they are in disadvantage so you can usually hard punish it. It has its uses but I do think it is an overrated move

This set also served to affirm why I think the Rat is better than Joker, and the best character in the game by a small but noticeable gap. The Rat simply has the best matchup chart in the game, and by contrast, Joker's matchups indicate more exploitable flaws with the character.

If you're talking about the rat vs joker then in this case it's 1 - 1
The only thing is Pikachu has matchups that are extremely against his favor, while all of Joker's bad matchups are only slight favor for the other character. None of Joker's "counters" can thwomp him as hard Ness, G&W, or Mario can thwomp Pikachu. I'd consider Joker better off the fact he can handle pretty much the entire roster fairly well, while Pikachu has at least those 3 where he struggles very badly, then there's Peach, Olimar, and maybe Snake that give Pikachu a significant problem.

Great set. Even though Leo's Joker is "rusted", it left me in awe when he made that game 3 entrance. So clean, such a treat to watch.
Wish Mkleo had the dragdown into forward smash down like he had before Covid, he was surely a bit rusty here. But credits to Esam here, his edgeguarding was perfect.
The statistic says that if ur 2-0 vs leo he's more likely to reverse 3-0 u but he's "More Likely" not that "He Will" as u can see in this case Esam didn't let the reverse 3-0 sweep happen even tho I would've loved to see it with the OG Joker

Byleth is really good offstage. The exception to that is if it is against Pikachu but that applies to everyone (except Pikachu)
