Depending in what source you believe, ukranians said in their propaganda they slaughter the VDV while the Russians said they held the airport for about 30 hours until reinforcements arrived, for me the truth is between these, i believe they were expelled but stayed stoic in the area and eventually recaptured the airport and well, that's one a hell of combat maneuver so cheer's to them.
ukraine lied a shit ton during the civil war against the DPR as well.. and with that conflict i saw enough combat footage from both sides to know who was lying and when.. i remember them claiming they had control of the donetsk airport when the rebels held it..

In the early days of the war, the Airborne forces landed near Kiev and held the airport in Gostomel for several days. Alone against an entire army of the enemy. This operation was necessary to prepare the negotiation process, and the negotiations actually began. But Ukraine, under pressure from the UK, disrupted the negotiation process and decided to die for Johnson. The Airborne Forces once again showed all their professionalism.

What's all this stuff about the VDV being 'destroyed' and dying? I keep on googling to find info on this, but every time I look, it all just sources back to the highly untrustworthy Ukrainian National Guard?
because the vdv isnt getting destroyed like how Ukraine wants you to think?
Yeah, they landed at hostomel airport, secured it for a while, then retreated when the fighting got a little heavy to get reinforced with tank units that had arrived from Chrnobyl and recaptured it in like a day.
So it wasn't a "wave" of paratroopers getting massacred, which is why no bodies are being shown from that Hostomel battle, but instead a bit of wise tactical movement to acheive a broader strategic goal.
VDV retreated when cornered but spetsnaz joined them and they took the hostomel airport.

Russia by contrast, by all accounts apears to have lost more men, officers, generals, tanks, aircraft and artillery in 3 weeks of fighting in Ukraine than the US did during the entier 20 Afghan war.

-200 men per Il-76, some reach Hostomel, some get shot down and burn to a crisp
-overall become target practice material for the Ukrainian Army
