Skyrims Nintendo Switch port is probably the best port there is, no mods and all the glitches are still there so you can just enjoy the game without feeling you need for enhancements, it's a 10/10 Port
I've owned a few different copies of Skyrim, but the first time I actually beat all of the main quests was on the Switch. Last year I bought a Steam Deck just so I could play handheld modded Skyrim, I spent hours and hours on Nexus, watching RUclips vids of various quality and usefulness getting things to work, and then after I finally got it to work, they updated the PC game late last year, breaking most of the mods (unless you were willing to jump through hours of hoops to get it working after every update), so I at that point, I was done. I still find myself playing the vanilla version on the Switch though, mostly on my Switch lite (I have 3 Switches now, I keep finding them cheap)
I only bother modding Skyrim VR since Bethesda never bothered trying to add creations to it. The version is frozen in time and super stable for modding.
The Switch version is actually unique in that it is the only version of the game that patches out the vampire attacks on towns from Dawnguard. Every other version has easily available mods to remove that, in the case of the PS4 and beyond versions, but Switch is the only one that Bethesda actually bothered to take the time to remove that annoying, janky feature before release.
@@CaptainEffort Because it's easy to play on the couch or portably I was playing Modded Skyrim on my Steam Deck for awhile but the recent updates made it a pain so I went back to the Switch.
Skyrim on switch oled was absolutely amazing for me. It was updated with all the bethesda community mods so it was a breath of fresh air compared to the original release, but also I played it more often because I could do so on the couch, my car, my office, on a trip etc. And as weird as it is to say, this was the first time in almost a decade I actually completed the main story because I wasn't distracted by the thousands of existing mods
I have been living abroad for the past 9 months, and won’t return home to my Xbox until October. I bought a switch specifically for traveling. I think I’ve spent 100 hours on Skyrim in handheld mode. I’m really glad it exists.
Playing it for an hour in bed right before you sleep or sitting on your front porch during sunset completely changes your relationship to the game, that’s why you buy it on switch. If you’re playing it docked you’ve made a mistake.

@6:31 - My wife is about 50. She's a Switch girl and plays BOTW, Hogwarts, and Animal Crossing among some of the things she plays. She's hooked on Skyrim as of 2 weeks ago (LVL 14) because of the Switch port. I also taught her tonight that she can use all her vast collection of Amibos to grab quick food and loot. She probably will not go to bed tonight. This comment is from Aug 2024.
“Why does Nintendo switch the A and B buttons” they’ve literally had the same controller set up since 1992. Ask Microsoft why they had to copy PlayStations setup.
Playstation uses cross/circle/triangle/square. Cross (A equivalent) has almost always been jump/select/yes and square (B equivalent) has always been back/no. Xbox changed the symbols. Nintendo is just backwards from PlayStation. Can be said Microsoft copied PS, but nobody was really backwards at the time. Nintendo and Sony were the only major players at the time until Xbox showed up.
All 3 have an x button, and they're all in different places. If you mean bottom for confirm and right for cancel, that's because it's western. Japanese PS games always had the same setup as Nintendo (If you ever played a Japanese import, circle is confirm,) but the western games and localisations swapped them around for some reason.
Skyrime switch edition was the game that made me realise that 3rd parties were actually gonna support the system. dont have it on switch but i do have the og and special versions on steam, both my most played game there. i'd only want to play it on switch for the novelty, like ive been doing with doom eternal.
I played Skyrim a TON when it released. Then I stopped. For over ten years. I just started it up again on ps5. It's strange to me that I still remember everything. I mean everything. I could say character lines the same tone and cadence as the characters. I could remember the order of things needed to happen to get to specific points. Everything. After ten years I remembered it all. I think that says a lot about this game.
The A, B, X, and Y buttons have been in that layout since the Super Nintendo, back in 1990. It was an evolution of the NES controller's layout where the A button was on the right, and B button was on the left, back in 1985. The only real early defiance came from Sega when they released the Genesis in 1989, after seeing Nintendo's upcoming Super Famicom / SNES controller with 4 face buttons; Sega released a controller with 6 face buttons, A, B, C, X, Y, and Z. And after challenging the Nintendo Entertainment System with their Sega Master System, Sega saw the early designs for controllers, and simply inverted the layout that Nintendo had made popular, putting A on the left instead of the right. Nintendo has stuck to their layout longer than most gamers have been alive, and even though it's clearly not the choice of most people, they were never the weird ones, but rather, were the only ones sticking to the format that they themselves popularized. You hate it, I hate it, basically everyone who plays on anything not made by Nintendo hates it... but that's how it was at the dawn of modern gaming, and they've adhered to it. Everyone else deviated from it, and were the weird ones.
I prefer the nintendo layout if anything. Maybe because my switch gets the most love nowadays but to me it makes more sense. Definitely was weird when they released dark souls remastered on switch and they stuck to having B as the interact button lol
@@kyongu375the Nintendo layout is better. Full stop. I hate the Xbox layout, it drives me insane! “A” has been the action button and has been on the right for over 30 years. It’s always a hard adjustment for me playing something on Xbox or PlayStation. No shade to anyone who prefers the Xbox layout! Nobody’s perfect :)
I bought skyrim the week it came out on xbox 360 when i was in 8th grade. I played it for over 1000 hours and 100% all achievements (until i hooked my 360 up to internet and skyrim updated and added the achievements for the dlc😅). I owned it on pc and modded it into the dirt as well. Now as a 25 year old dad ive found that gaming has taken quite the back seat for me. Part of my nightly routine is booting up skyrim on my switch and playing for an hour or so beforw bed and i still somehow manage to find or discover new things.
I did a 200 hr+ on the switch lite a few years ago and even without mods it was one of my favorite playthroughs. But then the steam deck came out and i could grab some old saves which was great as well. And those trackpads...
My first experience playing skyrim, and 100 hours of it, was back in my first semester of college back in 2016. Played it on low graphics, didn’t have the DLC’s, on a 11” Acer C720 chromebook that I modded windows onto. Somehow it played fine on a Celeron 2955U processor, but then again on a 720p 11” screen, and not caring much about FPS back then, it was absolutely awesome. That “chromebook” did me well for like 3 years or so.
i've played skyrim both on the first rendition of the switch, and the switch lite, still play it to this day, it's a wonderful game regardless, also played the PS3 version long ago, good times, better times.
I got this early on , summer 2017? I just remember being on vacation from work with the Switch strapped to the back of the headrest while my gf drove our suv, me in the backseat playing Skyrim! I was blown away just being able to bring it camping! I bought Skryrim several times as well…
I don’t have a switch, but I have a steam deck and ROG Ally, which I play Skyrim on and portable Skyrim is definitely awesome. The steam deck made for a great portable experience, and I imagine the switch was great as well for those who wanted to play on the go.
I first played Skyrim on the Switch, I'm pretty much a casual gamer and had never heard of the Elder Scroll games. After getting a Switch my local game shop recommended it and I fell in love with it and put about 300 hours into it. I watched some videos for help in a few spots but always thought the wait feature was only for PC-Xbox_Ps3. So I spent a lot of time waiting and sleeping.
Personally, I found myself playing Skyrim a lot again and I prefer to play it on the Switch for one very specific reason: The HD Rumble. Lockpicking and the switch's controllers are just perfect. It's been ages since I last broke a lockpick because the HD Rumble makes that mini game way more immersive.
A and B/Yes and No have always been swapped on Nintendo. Nintendo made the controls first, it's actually Xbox and the American version of Playstation that swapped it to be the other way around.
Nintendo didn’t invent the idea of controls but ye this backwards standard drives me mad even back on NES, where B and A are the wrong way around and out of pattern with every other company
@@NoFeckingNamesLeft i didn't mean Nintendo invented controllers, i meant that back with the SNES they created the 4 face buttons used in basically every controller since then.
@@hteekay Yeah, the O and X thing still throws me off because I have a modded Japanese Vita which uses the Japanese version by default and I use the Steam Deco or a PS5 controller for use on PC. Itbetter than it used to be though. I remember a few games back in the PS2 era that used triangle for back. I think some games used square as well.
@@hteekayyes, the rightmost button being select and the bottom being back is Japanese button mapping, which Nintendo keeps on their American consoles while Sony doesn't . Also to note, the Japanese mapping on Sony controllers is specifically designed for cultural context, that is, "X" means "bad, not good, etc", which then effectively creates no by visual context for Japanese players
Oh yeah ? Mine was freaking Commodore 64 and Arcades- Street Fighter 2 ,Final Fight. Till this day I laugh with my parents about stealing coins from their wallet so I can at least one credit and enjoy game 😁
3:34 Wrong. Nintendo has _never_ swapped A & B. The Dreamcast fucked up the orientation of those buttons and Microsoft copied Sega. As for Sony, I don’t know what they’re smoking but they swapped the functionality of the O & X buttons when they brought the Playstation stateside for some reason. In, Japan, the O & X buttons match the functionality of A & B on Nintendo’s consoles. _As they fucking should!_ So don’t go accusing Nintendo of swapping things around when it’s the other companies that are guilty!
My mom bought me a switch for Christmas in 2018, along with a copy of Skyrim. That was the only time I ever played fully vanilla Skyrim, and didn't use any console commands (because i didn't have any) the 6 years prior to that had all been on PC, and honestly, it was super fun. It went to school with me every day, and I'd spend all of lunch and my free periods playing it. I still have it, along with that save file. Every time I go on vacation and take my switch, I go right back to playing it like I never stopped. There's something so unique about how you can just pick up Skyrim at any point in time, at any point in the game, with whatever mods on whatever platform, and then just lose yourself in it for hours. I've played 4,000 hours of it between Oldrim, SSE, and the Switch port, and I still haven't gotten enough
Hey nice job man this video is pretty damn well paced. I honestly thought this channel was a bigger one till i went to look at the comments and noticed that it was infact a newish channel. Anyways tho great video. Also yeah i gotta add why do we all keep buying Skyrim knowing we won't be playing it lol Bethesda is out here makin fools of us 😂
After I got the Steam Deck January last year, my Switch AND Switch Lite have been collecting dust. I finally decided to get back to it and I started Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Wonder, I’m really liking both so far
I actually put like 80 hours into the Switch version even after playing through Skyrim multiple times elsewhere. Lack of mods notwithstanding it's honestly a very good version. Looks like the 360 version, maybe slightly better, but with much better load times, portable, and access to the Anniversary Edition content. It's great
@@CaptainEffortYes, but I install my mods manually through Nexus and I would need to remove them manually if I wanted to play the vanilla version on pc.
@@DerkuiDerkui Gotcha, I don’t mod on the deck because I’m so used to using MO2 on Windows so idk how easy or hard it is on the Deck nowadays. If you’re doing it manually then yeah, fair enough. I thought I remembered someone getting MO2 running on the Deck tho, do you know if that’s true?
Okay. So from my experience, I really didn't want to buy a skyrim another time, but I have to say it is much more comfortable to play it in the handheld form factor on a couch, then tied down to a desk like the great sphinx of egypt. Another point is that there's actually some value going back and playing the vanilla game as hard as the vanilla game is to play after modding for 10 plus years. You start to forget what parts of the game were original, and which parts weren't and being able to determine that allows you to fine-tune the mods on your computer better, because you know that there are things that the mods took out that you didn't want to be taken out that you want to add back.
I agree completely with the video. Skyrim is probably my favorite game, this is because I love the game even with all its flaws, and well, knowing that I thought it would be a good idea for me to play it on switch, knowing full well that I already had it on PS4 and have it on PC both the anniversary and vr versions While it is no better than many other games, the gameplay is extremely simple, I've already did basically everything so there isn't much to experience that is knew, the exploration is good, but lacks incentive and has a lot of jank and bugs I found myself playing more than I have ever played it. And what you said at the end of the video is what I found myself doing. Getting back from the uni and playing a bit of Skyrim before going to sleep, or playing it a bit when I had time. It is a super easy game to start, play a little bit, go back to what you were doing and continuing through your day. I believe Skyrim is a game that has magic for those who sometimes can't afford to play it like a job, like Minecraft it works better as a game you play for five minutes and bit by bit you see a lot of progress that you could not see before. This is why I even believe the Switch is the best place to play Skyrim, not because it's good, but because Skyrim is perfect as a game on a mobile console.
1:27 The *first* Nintendo Switch trailer, to be specific. The one that introduced the system. They tried to play it coy like "well we don't know if we'll make the port or not" but everyone knew it was bullshit and it was coming to the platform.
I graduated 8 years before it came out. Still playing it on my v2 switch. But the dark areas are completely washed out, so I bought an OLED switch. It looks pretty damn good for 720p.
There’s nothing like being able to get comfy on a couch or wherever and just play Skyrim instantly without bothering with setup or location. It’s a comfort game for a lot of people (myself included) and it being portable only made it better. Side note: best bug I ever got on my original 360 copy was that every time I shot an arrow, my controller disconnected. Basically meant bows were entirely unplayable
I have mod fatigue. Mod for hours and finally play just to be bored with it in a couple of hours. The switch version has made me appreciate Skyrim for what it is and puts that magic back in it for me. The survival mode they added makes a nice bonus as well.
I find myself getting Skyrim on the switch only to mod it on a hackable switch i recently got. Though I can't get it as good as my skyrim SE modlist i spent years and years on due to lack of skse and mod support, it's shocking when you're still able to change everything else for a small device as this, and fun trying to work around the hardware limitations of the switch, with the caveat of having those nasty texture glitches. If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that learning to understand file structures and getting mods to work without requiring an esp.
I gotta say, Switch is my main skyrim game and it will be for a while until ive done most of the things there are to do on that character. So amazing being able to play it wherever whenever
It makes RP more immersive in my opinion, I have two plays going right now, both on legendary survival one as a sword and board Berserker Paladin then one as a Tradesman/Merchant that specializes in support with magic for their “bodyguard” companions. Edit: I just realized my switch is almost 10 years old
When the game first released I had an Xbox 360, but was in the middle of a break up and did not keep the console. In 2022 I bought myself a switch and after binging Zelda, Skyrim was the next thing I grabbed! So much fun! Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours piled into it. With nothing to compare it I don’t know about performance or visual differences from other consoles but I do know I enjoyed the game
After not playing anything much since ffxii on PS2, I got back into games from buying a switch and Skyrim, it's the first open world game I had experienced and it's incredible to see on a handheld. We shouldn't take this technology for granted, just because we are so used to the concept of VR doesn't mean that the technology isn't magical. A few decades ago we couldn't foresee the leaps in technological advancement.
my first time playing skyrim was on switch last year. i couldnt put the console down until i had the full game played through and only small quests left. i had no idea about modding or any of that until i got it for xbox. still one of my top 3 games ive played, even vanilla
I have the same relation with the Witcher 3. I own it on several platforms & while having it on pc with the crazy graphical “next gen update” has the game looking gorgeous. Despite all that I still prefer playing on switch. Something about not taking gaming so seriously & on the go allows me to enjoy it much more
majority of my switch game playtimes has been in handheld honestly. the times ive played it dock is splitscreen/coop/multiplayer with family along with very few singleplayer games make it to the tv for me.
I just got this game for switch finally in Nov 2024. I know it won’t be the ultimate experience with mods but I know I’ll get my money’s worth. May upgrade to the anniversary edition later after I complete a playthrough or two. Then I plan to play Oblivion and Morrowind again.
As someone who prefers the game vanilla, the switch version is absolutely perfect. And it looks amazing on the oled model. Been playing this since 2011 it never gets old
Tbh I think it's one of the best ports on the Switch. It runs pretty well, sometimes crash but the graphics run really well for the switch. No mods but tbh I don't find that much of a problem personally.
I love collecting rare weapons and armors in Skyrim/Fallout games. The completionist in me needed this version for the simple fact that they added the Master Sword and Hylian Shield as well as the BOTW outfit to this version of the game. Being the fourth and not even final time I’ve purchased this game I still put in over 100 hours on this version lol
I played thousands of hours of this on 360 over the years but never on PC because, and you might get what I mean, it’s FEELS better on a console. In my mind it is a game for the tv. Playing this on the switch, it runs better than it ever did on my 360 back in the day, it’s got the CC content with the anniversary pack which is nice and having the chance to play handheld is nice. I don’t dare play this with mods because I don’t want to overwrite the pure feeling of nostalgic joy that this game can deliver but there are small things I wish this game had on switch that would require small mods such as alternate start or some role playing stuff.
I find skyrim relaxing. To me compared to all the games that have the micro transactions and stuff. It's nice to have a sword fighting game medieval game that doesn't require Internet or anything special to run. It may be clonky, but I just really enjoy skyrim.
Same here, Skyrim is pretty much one of the last game from a now lost era of gaming Skyrim is whatever you make it to be, it can be a challenging game where you can die easily, it can be a relaxing game where you explore without a specific goal, it can also be a role-playing game where you pretend to be a specific type of character I love skyrim, nowadays game don't really have anymore this "play it that way you want" thing. Playing it also takes me back to a time where things were just simpler
Bought a switch right before the pandemic happened as a non gamer and now I’ve very recently picked up a Skyrim for the first time. It’s been so enjoyable. I cannot believe how many great games are on the switch!!!
I have Skyrim on pretty much every platform imaginable and have sunk countless hours into the game. I have to say, with the Switch version I find myself playing the game way longer than I normally would. The portability factor makes me put the game down less since I can just take my Switch with me when I'd normally be taking a break. The lack of mods and console commands also means you can't just unlock every map marker and fast travel everywhere. You actually have to go around, explore and discover new places. If you're a veteran of Skyrim you can usually fly through the game like it's nothing but the Switch version forces you to slow down and immerse yourself more within the world. I love that mods have been able to give the game a second life and continue to be popular after all these years but the Switch version has become one of my favorite ways to play the game.
My first introduction to Skyrim was the Switch Was it flawed? Yes, of course; this is skyrim that we are talking about Was it a good introduction to skyrim? I wouldn't have had it any other way, being able to take it anywhere with little to worry about graphics (since i'd never played the game before) really had me enjoying the game I argue that if I experienced it first on PC I wouldn't have clocked in the hundreds of hours I did, as i'm in the same predicament now with installing mods, getting bored and then uninstalling after just starting a playthrough - something about this game still drags me along and yet half the time i'm not even playing, I think thats what makes skyrim such a beautiful but flawed game
You don't gotta make me feel old. Lol When you were a kid. I was a full grown adult when Skyrim came out in 2011. I remember being excited for Super Nintendo games. I miss the 90's.
Im waiting for them to realise skyrim on pacemakers.

Cos we got bigger mits. In Asia cos their mits are small their thumbs sit bitter on circle. Then again I am not Asian so this is speculation.
Why play the vanilla switch version over the vanilla pc version tho?

“Why does Nintendo switch the A and B buttons” they’ve literally had the same controller set up since 1992. Ask Microsoft why they had to copy PlayStations setup.
This
Playstation uses cross/circle/triangle/square.
@@kyongu375
My condolences.
I played this on switch back in 2019, it was an awesome experience and I was re addicted to it
I bought skyrim the week it came out on xbox 360 when i was in 8th grade.
The playing dark souls at your grandmas funeral joke is what got me to sub lmao, that shit was gold
The gyro actually makes being a stealth archer pretty nice.
I have a switch lite and it's the only thing I play Skyrim on I'm 44.
I did a 200 hr+ on the switch lite a few years ago and even without mods it was one of my favorite playthroughs. But then the steam deck came out and i could grab some old saves which was great as well. And those trackpads...
Great and nostalgic review (especially because of the soundtrack). Thank you for this neat video.

Skyrim is one of games that I always back and play now and then. Even played the switch version for another reason to play.
havent even started this video yet but im 50 hrs in on the switch and ive never played before and its an awesome experience.
Growing up is realizing you’ll never get over Skyrim after playing it once your hooked for life no matter how long the pause is
My first experience playing skyrim, and 100 hours of it, was back in my first semester of college back in 2016.
It's amazing on the Oled, few hundred hours on switch. Never docked either. Felt great and ran smooth as hell.

It's been ages since I last broke a lockpick because the HD Rumble makes that mini game way more immersive.
this video is thoroughly entertaining thanks
Thanks for being entertained!!!
A and B/Yes and No have always been swapped on Nintendo. Nintendo made the controls first, it's actually Xbox and the American version of Playstation that swapped it to be the other way around.
heck even Japan and US playstation Swap their X and O buttons for yes and no. It still goes on like this
Nintendo didn’t invent the idea of controls but ye this backwards standard drives me mad even back on NES, where B and A are the wrong way around and out of pattern with every other company

Love me some classic vanilla Skyrim on the go!
I really like it. It's nice to have on the go
You can button map any button to another button in settings btw to swap your a and b - they added that for people with accessibility issues
_As they fucking should!_
So don’t go accusing Nintendo of swapping things around when it’s the other companies that are guilty!
I thought it was because Nintendo originated in japan was why it still went along with the a and b design. nice information.
After I got the Steam Deck January last year, my Switch AND Switch Lite have been collecting dust. I finally decided to get back to it and I started Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Wonder, I’m really liking both so far
Honestly I love playing on the switch - also you get Link's botw tunic on the switch version and I LOVE that haha
It's great
I play the Switch version to get the vanilla experience. I play the PC version when I want to use mods. It's a win-win situation.
Why tho? You can play the vanilla version on pc too, but with higher framerate/resolution and higher quality textures.
Skyrim is probably my favorite game, this is because I love the game even with all its flaws, and well, knowing that I thought it would be a good idea for me to play it on switch, knowing full well that I already had it on PS4 and have it on PC both the anniversary and vr versions
While it is no better than many other games, the gameplay is extremely simple, I've already did basically everything so there isn't much to experience that is knew, the exploration is good, but lacks incentive and has a lot of jank and bugs I found myself playing more than I have ever played it.

I'm not gonna lie I've bought Skyrim a few times but I bought it on my switch with the anniversary edition addon the portability sells it
I've done the same as you. And I agree.

Same here, Skyrim is pretty much one of the last game from a now lost era of gaming
Skyrim is whatever you make it to be, it can be a challenging game where you can die easily, it can be a relaxing game where you explore without a specific goal, it can also be a role-playing game where you pretend to be a specific type of character
I love skyrim, nowadays game don't really have anymore this "play it that way you want" thing.
My first introduction to Skyrim was the Switch
Was it flawed? Yes, of course; this is skyrim that we are talking about
Was it a good introduction to skyrim? I wouldn't have had it any other way, being able to take it anywhere with little to worry about graphics (since i'd never played the game before) really had me enjoying the game
I argue that if I experienced it first on PC I wouldn't have clocked in the hundreds of hours I did, as i'm in the same predicament now with installing mods, getting bored and then uninstalling after just starting a playthrough - something about this game still drags me along and yet half the time i'm not even playing, I think thats what makes skyrim such a beautiful but flawed game
It should be noted it’s even easier to lock pick in this version because of the rumble feature added.
I too have been finding myself play the switch version of this game while I watch my little niece
You don't gotta make me feel old. Lol When you were a kid. I was a full grown adult when Skyrim came out in 2011. I remember being excited for Super Nintendo games. I miss the 90's.
