Thank you for your questions. I've started my response video. If you have a question, please make a note and ask in my next "Ask Me Anything" video!
The most important question: talking about bpm, when can i advance in a etude like wohfardt ones in semiquaver? i can't get pass 75-80 bpm in almost everything, if i try speeding up more i lose days and days just for 1 or 2 more bpm, too many time in the same etude when i already learnt everything it has to give. i see lots of people doing them at 100+ bpm, but they are way more advanced. what is a good bpm for starters on etudes in op.45 to advance and a good bpm when you are finishing the book? just an estimate speed, i know everything is relative from person to person.
When I move my arm up to 3rd position learning it, my muscle between elbow and shoulder hurts. This happens in the G string mainly. To fall fingers on right notes on G string in 3rd position I feel contorted.
I’m an adult beginner, and have been working through the Suzuki books with private one-on-one lessons. I’m currently somewhere between books 3 and 4. As such, I was hoping you could help me with some questions about what getting better at the violin looks like as an amateur adult:
1. When’s a good time to consider learning vibrato?
2. Now that I can somewhat reliably hit notes at the right pitch, how do I work on tone and sound quality?
3. When should I consider a piece “done” and move on to something more technically challenging? Is it when I can play it through without mistakes? Is it when I’m happy with the sound quality, phrasing, etc.? I feel like I could work for months on the latter whereas I might actually improve more by moving on to a new piece.
Thanks for doing this!
I'm having some difficulty hearing myself when I play. When I listen to a recording of myself, I fairly easily hear which notes are out of tune, and where my bowing needs improvement. But I far less hear that while playing. Is the ability to hear oneself accurate while playing something that grows over time, or are there techniques for that?
Can i learn new positions just with Sevcik op.6? it will give a good foundation until 5th position? or better something like whistler's introducing the positions? i ask because i really like sevcik-type exercises, very mechanic and repetitive, i don't get bored. afther that i can go to etudes (and schradiek).
How do we continuously bounce the bow like in Paganini 13?
My intonation and sound production is better when I practice than when I play a song? Any explanation would be highly appreciated. Thanks
Hello. I'm a beginner violinist. I have also studied violin as a child for 7 years. I can play two Bachs sonatas. But people have told me never to touch Chaconne until i reach 60 years old. Please tell me if i can start practicing Chaconne and where do i start? Is it really that difficult? I have seen many 10 year olds play it. Basically my question is... What is going to require for me to learn Chaconne? Thank you in advance ❤
about double stops: i'm in trott's melodious double stops book 1 halfway trhough now, and the exercises are really more advanced compared to what i play in my repertoire or etudes (suzuki book 5). it's still benefic to keep going in trott's book? or better i use the time spent in things at my level? or even go back to the first double stops studies and refine them?
Hello, for smaller lest hands and shorter fingers, do you suggest that the hand should come forward so that all the fingers are in tune? Or should we place the hand back and pull the four fingers forward when we're placing it? Or do you suggest to take the knuckles lower that all fingers can reach the string?
Hi, I long to find out about hand vibrato. It's gotten worse over the years or rather after i switched to the viola from violin
Can Violin playing result in asymetry in my body?
I am having trouble grasping the concept of how one looks at sheet music for a piece you have never heard, and play it as it is supposed to sound. I understand that you look at the time signature, play the notes as written but I can never get it right.
Is there a video or any online resource you can refer me to that explains the purpose of everything we do and why we do them in the specific way we do while playing the violin. I’m a beginner and understanding the complex mechanics and purpose behind such seemingly basic movements would definitely help to set a framework for better learning.
My website Violinlab.com dissects all the muscle movements in detail and I explain the WHYs. Most teachers tell students to do a particular thing without giving the reason. My tagline used to be "Teaching the science of good violin playing".
Hello, I'd like to ask if the chin rest you are using is from the brand Dolfinos?
I FIND DIFFICULT IN VIBARATO, AND MY INDEX FINGER IS NOT COOPERATING .WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO IMPROVEVIBARATO?
Hello! I have an adult student who is having difficulty reaching notes with the pinky in the first position. In addition to getting their elbow well under the violin, palm facing the neck, base knuckles at the level of the fingerboard, left hand relaxed and tension-free, and violin at a 45 degree angle, what else do you recommend? The student does have a small hand, but I believe the root cause is inflexibility. Can you please suggest stretching exercises to help this student limber up and improve their flexibility and prevent injury? Thank you. 🙏🏻 🎻
Oh yes, the plight of the small handed player. I have a small pinky too. I give a fairly decent response to the same question in this video ruclips.net/video/A7KClam9tzg/видео.htmlsi=aVoVOsLLNxqZcE-9&t=3041. One thing you said that I want to clarify: "palm facing the neck". If the hand is truly flush to the neck, it will actually shorten the pinky's ability to extend. You still want more of a 45 degree angle from the hand as it will let the pinky extend in the right direction higher up the string.

Should I learn a wrist vibrato or an arm vibration? A beginner here 6 months
Great question. I gave a response to this in a previous Ask Me Anything response. Take a look at this and let me know if it answers your question. If not, feel free to ask a follow up. ruclips.net/video/DhDiw8FgAxk/видео.htmlsi=0VuxYhtW2RSZo0rb&t=3082
Why not try to learn both and see which one works best for you?
Thanks a lot! Does help
I am learning violin at the age of 48 ... but in Sol Re Sol Re tuning not Sol Re la mi tuning. do you hear about this tuning? did you ever try it? it's estren modification to play 1/4 tone MAQAM or Scale. do you think my bones and my mussels can handle this ?
Interesting. I unfortunately know nothing about this tuning. I'm sure its so that you can drone the lower strings and play melodies above the drone..?? I don't think I can give you any useful information. I wish I could.
@violinlab thank you for replying, this tuning is a must to play eastern music, as you know the quarter tone is hard to play within 5th based instruments, so the Arab and Turkish tune the middle 2 strings as 4th based.. any way thank you for your time , I learn alot from you, wish to meet you somewhere, once-in-a-life.
@@mmfssr Interesting. In north Indian hindustani music and south indian carnatic music they adopt Do Sol Do Sol tuning , where the Do is left for the performer to decide . Now a days it has become customary to to define Do as C or C#. And yes as @violinlab suggested, this tuning is to facilitate the drone effect. Some performers have custom built violins with extra drone open strings. Here is an example of Dr. Sisirkana Dhar Choudhury performing on her own custom designed 5 + 9[sympathetic string under the fingerboard] at age 80.
