If you love sad or dark lyrics, Porcupine Tree is a goldmine.
... or if you love extraordinary music! (many call art or prog) ;-)
Steven Wilson and Mikael go way back and Steven's produced a bunch of Opeth albums, as well as both of them being featured on each other's albums a bunch since then - specifically, Steven was doing harmonies and some of the chorus cleans in Bleak which you listened to recently, and in this song the second solo is Mikael's, as well as some of the backing vocals (on this as well as bunch of other songs on Deadwing, the album).
He's got some real gut-wrenching stuff which I'm sure all the good people around here shall be recommending. Incredible musician.
If I remember correctly, the "heavier" aspect of Porcupine Tree was a result of Steven producing and engineering Opeth's Damnation and Deliverance albums.
Yep! That’s Mikael from Opeth playing the bluesy guitar solo right after the fast part in this song. Other Porcupine Tree songs that you may want to explore are: Lazarus, Fear of a Blank Planet, Anesthetize, Blackest Eyes & Trains.
Finally :) After the discovery of Porcupine Tree, mainly the albums Stupid Dream, In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet, my perception of music has never been the same as before.
Steven Wilson (singer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and lead songwriter) is a genius. Mikael knew very well why he had begun a sea of cooperation with him. I also recommend his solo work. The song (and music video) Routine gets me after each watch. ingenious.
They changed my musical life too. I went to school for audio engineering because of these guys. I even got to meet them at a recording of a live album with only like 40 audience members of which I was one. 😁
@@jainelson8840I was there to. You remember me? I was the guy with the penis
The singer here is Steven Wilson, who produced three of opeth albums. He also provided vocals for some of the songs of Blackwater Park. Such as middle section of Bleak aka the keyboard guy lol
Porcupine Tree! Ahhh! One of my all time favorites! And starting off with probably my favorite song of theirs as well! Been listening to them for so long and still hard to choose a favorite. 'Trains' is right up there as well. My day is made.
This band.... ANYTHING live is a must. Some of the best performances you will ever hear and see.
Thank you!
Fitting this has Mikael, and your last Opeth one had Steven featuring.
"Anesthetize" is probably their most popular, and i know the album always comes first, but they add stuff live making it better imo. For example, the ending of Arriving somewhere but not here, is very different live.
Gavin Harrison is legendry drummer (I'm talking Danny Carey level) this song doesn't show it, "Cheating the Polygraph" does, also, few but good dark lyrics, I recommend that as a next one.
PT split, But Steven Wilson is stil making music, and originally PT was 100% steven. All instruments, sounds, writing, mixing.
I hope you continue, they have a lot of albums and lot of variation.
Comment no longer true! New album + Tour coming 2022!
I need to check out the channel and find out if you have seen them live yet..... This song live is phenomenal... ALL the parts are there... but if possible it's even better... As you say, it shouldn't work, but it does. And that is a testament to te sonegwriting, arranging and production skills of Steven Wilson. I REALLY do hope you've seen more of them... Keep on Rocking.
Mikaël played a solo in this song, the last kind of jazzy one i think
Yaaaaaay!!!! The link is Steven Wilson, the lead singer and guitarist. This band on its own is incredible, with amazing musicians.
hmmm, 1 more PROG legend. I hope you enjoy these rides. But let me warn you, once you get the gist of progressive music, there's no going back ;)
They are some of the most amazing musicians in the world right now but you can't tell
I enjoyed this reaction very much, despite the fact that I normally turn off reactions to studio versions of PT songs that I believe are better live. However, there is something about your reactions that I find entertaining, I shall have to watch another.
IMO, your first Porcupine Tree should always be live. Many of their songs are better live. This song is definitely in that group.
Great reaction. I recommend the tracks Lazarus, Time flies and Blackest Eyes.
Porcupine Tree are one of those bands where you experience the music, not just listen to it. Steven Wilson is an incredible composer - he never just throws things together
After 11 years Porcupine Tree have reunited, please check their New song Harridan. As a result, in November 2022 in two weeks time I will visiting both Opeth and Porcupine Tree (again). Me so happy 😀
If you like sad lyrics and melodies, check out his song Heart Attack in a Laybuy. One of the saddest and most beautifully haunting songs for me.
Edit: I read that Wilson stated in an interview that Heart Attack in a Layby is his favorite PC song.
Wow you're in for a treat if you're just getting into Porcupine Tree. And then there's Steven Wilson's (lead singer/song writer of PT) solo work which is equally as good! The guy is a musical genius seriously. As many have said - He's one of the most incredible music talents out there that most people have never heard of.
Check out "Drive Home". It'll hit ya in the feels and the official video is an excellent piece of animation to compliment it.
They're actually back, and the new album "Closure Continuation" will be out in June this year.
8:08: doesn't really know where it wants to be - if you'd informed yourself properly, you'd have learnt that Steven Wilson is an extremely accomplished, talented musician who knows very well where he's going. He's purposefully blending genres so that people don't put him in a box.
The slow guitar solo part towards the 3/4 of the song is played by mikael. You should check out the song “Don’t Hate Me”. Really brilliant song from Porcupine Tree
A major surprise is that Porcupine Tree are back and they are releasing a new album
I'm surprised you didn't recognize Mikael singing in this.
Hi Lauren
Great to see an honest reactor who is not afraid to say what they actually think instead of pandering to all the softies, every time I watch a reaction you never fail to give me a chuckle.
I feel I must point out that like Opeth Porcupine Tree are even better live than they are in the studio, while I understand it's a long song I cannot recommend Anethetize enough (live of course) absolutely flawless !
Keep those chuckles coming 🤪
I dont think i actually agree with you. I think Porcupine tree studio albums are amazing, especially listening with surround sound . Harly surprising as Wilson is a multi award-winning producer - while they can certainly play their music to perfection live, the energy rarely seems there from the band or the crowd
Thank you, Lady L. You're beyond Awesome. You are one of us. We are you. 😊
That entire album is great. I'm pretty sure it's a rock opera or something like that so it's best listened to in one sitting. Since you mostly talked about the lyrics I'll recommend the songs Trains, Where We Would Be, Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth, Time Flies, Buying New Soul, Even Less.
11:08: best resolution ever. Gets me every single time.
If you like sad music with a melody, you really need to listen to some Radiohead. "How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found", "No Surprises", and "Black Star" are three good ones to start with.
Also, you would like some of Devin Townsend's music as well. "Deadhead" and "Bastard" would be a good start.
Porcupine Tree surpass genre's they are just superb!
You have to check out the live version from Chicago.Golden rule with Porcupine Tree always go with there live versions
I like that you transcribe your thoughts rather than talk over the song. One of my favorite albums here.
This album (Deadwing) was originally intended to be the soundtrack of a ghost story that Steven Wilson co-wrote the screenplay for, but a film was never made. Porcupine Tree is often regarded as the heirs to Pink Floyd, and credited as bringing back the popularity for prog music. Leader Steven Wilson is a musical and technical genius and is in high demand for his studio skills. He has remixed classic albums for Jethro Tull, Yes, Rush, Roxy Music, King Crimson, and many more. The band is know for their musicianship, all virtuosos, and drummer Gavin Harrison is rated as one of the best drummers currently playing (Neil Peart was a fan!).
Don't shoot me down here for my reaction to this song/group. I am a 62yr old, grew up with the music of the 60 - 70's, this band is great, musically and lyrically; they give me a strong hint of Pink Floyd...? Not sure if anyone else feels that way, or not....
The song is basically just Welcome to the Machine with new lyrics
Welcome to the Steven Wilson rabbit hole…..
You have to react to Anesthesize by this band. It's their masterpiece!
It has to be the live version. It is, in fact their magnum opus.
If you love the lyrics, the music and his voice you really cant go wrong...I suspect you will be a fan soon. Try Trains next :)
This is the same guy who sang the chorus in Opeth's Bleak. Mikael Akerfeldt also plays the solo in this song!
Its just Kick - ASS,Music plain and simple no Fucking around Yo.
You need to check out Steven Wilson's solo stuff. Luminol, or Deform to Form a Star would be great reactions!
Should have watched the live @ Tilburg version and they're about release a new album next June
sooo, that means they are a Pop, Alt Rock, prog metal rock Band.... and anything in between. totally awsome!
Yeah Mikael Akerfeldt (lead singer of Opeth) is playing that second bluesy solo in the song. They have collaborated a lot and influenced each other's music.
Always choose to review Live Versions and Videos of PT, They are better than the studio versions 😄
More porcupine tree please. React to "Trains"
This is Progressive rock at its best. Might as well start at the top although Porcupine tree and lead singer and writer Steven Wilson’s’ output is more like the Himalayan plateau than a single mountain. So many high points and virtually no troughs.
Sadly it doesn't look as though you have... Aaah well. Anesthetize - Live in Tildurn is one to go for if you ever want to do another Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson song reaction.
See the live version now...
why did you not react to this band more ?
You need to check their live performances as well. As good, or even better than studio versions. :)
...Def better. I honestly believe the live captures are way better.
"Could you imagine your final sound as a gun?". Not that it matters but realistically most projectiles from a firearm will travel at supersonic speeds so you're generally not going to hear the one that gets you. It would still suck ass though.
Lyric wise you might like PT song "heart attack in a layby". Try the live version.
Time to get back to PT yet Lauren?
you're cool lauren
Not as cool as you :)
Ahhhhh.... Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree. Jealous; you have so much genius stuff to discover from them - from 110% Pink Floyd-alike prog to heavy melodic. Some is a real punch in the stomach (and should come with a warning). All Astonishing. Go for the live stuff... esp. the Tilburg sessions.
Like a slightly lighter band like PT, do try The Pineapple Thief esp. "All The Wars" - PT needs concentrated listening, TPT you can have on in the background with the same vibes and you just dip in and out. PT have broken up now, but TPT have gained their excellent drummer, Gavin Harrison.
Enjoy!
If you liked this, then I highly recommend reacting to Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Live) m.ruclips.net/video/iBfY86cktN0/видео.html
It is absolutely brilliant!
Loved the song, new to me as well. Not a fan of the fade out though, hate it when songs do that
Hey Steven, I really recommend you watch the live version , the ending is perfect.. also watching the guys do it live makes you appreciate it more, enjoy 😁👍
You wanna focus on the lyrics and the music is the high liner
You Really don't get it
When you like this you will surely like newpeth...
Old Beth :)
not for me zzzzzzzzz
