How to Glaze

- I've used glazing a lot on past miniature projects, and I always feel bad because I don't have a video on the subject that really goes over the technique and equips people with all the right expectations. Hopefully I fixed that with this video!

This is one of the most friggin' useful videos on mini painting on RUclips. Glazing gets thrown around as a term willy-nilly without an explanation so often, and that sucks for newbies. And you did this right after getting teeth yanked?! Pretty sure two days after mine came out I was still a chipmunk faced wreck drooling into a bowl of soup, barely able to control a spoon, let alone a paintbrush. Kudos. I wish you tasty soup and smooth blends.
If you watch at 1.25 speed it sounds like you don't have sore teeth. :) #speedhacks
lol that so works
Honestly this has been the best tip of the entire tutorial. Thanks.
Sore teeth?
those two downvotes were your wisdom teeth?
The third just woke up, I bet the 4th is going to come off the painkillers anytime now.
"That I will finish in 2022..." Such a big mood.
i know Im randomly asking but does any of you know a trick to log back into an instagram account?
I stupidly lost my account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Lawson Jude Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Lawson Jude It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account !
@Finn Forest no problem xD
Yo welcome to 20202
I just spent 6 minutes hearing you talk and I KNEW something was wrong and then you finally explained it. Feel better man! Cant wait to see your Halloween reveal!
I think that mediums appear white because of how they refract light, not because there is any white pigment in them. These refractive properties seem to cease when mixed into paint, therefore no white tint or something like that occurs
i realise I am 4 years late but just in case for anyone else reading this, i believe that similarly to varnishes, the white colour is completely gone when the medium has dried. once its been mixed with some paint its already barely noticeable
I was taught this technique by a GW 'eavy Metal painter back in 2007. I really wish I could remember his name so I could give him credit where it's due because it's very effective.
Thanks for the video!!!
As a reminder, there will not be an upload this next Friday because I'm working on 2 bigger projects in the month of October!
Get drunk and upload whatever!
Did you mean to say Orktober 😜
Halloween themed?!
Miniac or anyone HELP ! I'm thinking of doing Zenithuial Highlighting with my Space (Ultra) Marine
(you know undershading with black primer all over then grey primer at 45 degrees and then white primer from top) BUT I want to glaze it (just after priming it) with a MacCragge Blue Citadel paint (using say Vallejo Glazing medium or Citadel Lahmian). Problem is MacCragge Blue Citadel is a BASE paint and someone informed me that I can't do that because 'it's too opaque'. Dunno if that's true, they suggested a Vallejo Blue Ink instead for glazing the undershaded primed Ultramarine but Vallejo Blue Ink isn't MacCragge Blue and I want to stick to their proper GW approved colour.
You can use virtually any paint you want for glazing. Base paints may just take more water to thin out than a layer paint.
Scott looks like a 40k inquisitor, he should get his own mini
You don't need wisdom teeth do be wise! You rock...again...and...again 🤘
420 glaze it!
This was the comment I was looking for.
Does this work on donuts?
You missed a great oportunity to make a godfather intro
Great Video! Learning to glaze properly improved the quality of my mini's dramatically, awesome technique for everyone to learn. Keep up the good work man, every time I watch one of your vid's I have to pick up a brush and paint something.
Video came out 20 seconds ago but the comments are from 6 days ago. I'm stumped
Patrons get the video a week before everyone else.
Miniac that makes sense. Definitely worth subbing XD
Jon Newcomb I assumed there was some warp hijinks going on
No hijinks - I’m a proud Patron and saw the vid early.
Great video mate. Especially the comparison with inks, since that's a product I often struggle to make use of despite having bought a fair amount lol. Will give these tips a good go next time I get the chance.
And your painting has come leaps n bounds over such a short space of time. Inspirational mate.
I love your in-depth videos like this with the testing of products and this is the best so far. Thanks Scott!
Great video. Thanks for posting it. I also wanted to say, for those fellow beginners out there, that I've learned glazing can also help rescue you if your highlights are accidentally too intense, or too much white in them, etc., mixing up a thin glaze of your base color and then using it on these hyper-intense areas can mute the highlights without completely painting over them with the base and blotting them out.
Watching this in 2022. I wonder if you finished your witch KillTeam Squad.
Hey Miniac, quick question. What is the brush box/case shown in your intro? im looking for a case when transporting my brushes.
Checking in from 2022... you ever finish that Kill Team? (~7:04)
it's 2022, did you finish painting your kill team?
It’s 2022 did you finish
The Citadel Glazes are more of a colour shift than a blending paint. I use bloodletter to create sores or cuts because it slightly tints the skin red. You CAN blend a colour with the glazes, but, as you said a thinned paint is my prefference
Great Scott!!!
Finally someone made a glazing for dummies video. I've been searching so long :')
Well Scott, it's 2022. Did you finish?
The more you know! Thanks for making it clear, you are so good at this ^^
Really gettin gLazy with these intros.
Big question is, did you finish the Killteam?
Finished the killteam Mini yet? Not much time left…
It's 2022, how's that kill team looking?
It’s 2022. Where are we on this killteam?
soo.. uh.. its 2022, is that kill team done yet?
thanks for the good info I have been trying glazing and was 95% doing it rite now I can do it 100% rite keep up the good work no wisdom teeth that means u are going to start been stupider lol love your vids
Just saw your glazing video. Loved the application portion - that is exactly what I needed. Face practice...here we come :)
Previously, I could only glaze like a pleb. Now, I successfully glaze like a noob.
Does anyone have a really difficult time glazing with evil sunz scarlet? I find that regardless of how careful I am, I always get tide lines.
Same, even when mixed with acrylic ink
Holy shit, hands down the best video on glazing. I was struggling to find one for too long.
Here it is… 2022… kill team finished?
7:02 Did you finish that kill team yet?
This explains something I've not delved into in my painting journey, and I'm feeling a lot more comfortable with the whole idea and how to go about it. Great video as always! P.S. hope you're wisdoms are all healed soon
Did you finish the kill team yet?
Scott! your the Alton Brown of the Mini painting world!
Did you finish that kill team? 😂
#240 GlazeIt!
Don't forget to....*ice pack face awkwardly mumbles* "Paint more minis," feels like a missed comedic opportunity. xD
YO!! ITS ALMOST 2022!! I expect to see a video of you finishing this kill team! LET'S GOOOO!!!!
Hirax shirt! Love it!
Thanks for sharing this information, @Miniac. I've seen some glazing technique videos, yours was very comprehensive. I've added it to my library as reference.
Curious ... it's December 2021 ... how is that Killteam Wych unit paining project progressing? 2022 is almost upon us. ;)
Hi Miniac how are you? Im just starting painting and your videos are a must.... very insightfull so thanks for that. After watching this Galze video I have 2 questions, I would be very happy if you can answer them xd. 1.- Your rather to glaze the dark or the light color on top of the other one? I mean should I work the Glaze with the lighter color to the darker or the other way around? 2.- Wich is the best ratio of medium:paint? 4:1 as I think you said? many many many thanks!!! edit: sorry if you talked about these topis in your video, Im spanish native speaker and my english sometimes doesnt work very well xd THANKS!
Right. Metallics! Fuck yes! I know you’ve done NMM, but a video on TMM, using non metal is to shade and highlight metallics would be awesome.
Decent quality metallic painting videos that go beyond the ‘wash, drybrush, edge highlight’ schtick are thin on the ground.
So how about mon ami?
oh god damnit. I know it's been 4 years for you... but I watch that video with swollen cheeks and on painkillers.. because i just got my wisdoomteeth removed, literally 2 days ago.
Man, where were you in 1982? We would have killed for any kind of art training applied to minis. They were awful grotesque casts and we all started with Testor's gloss paint, which was used by the model car builders in the late 60s and 70s. It wasn't acrylic so we used turpentine. And brushes that were better suited to, i don't know, being thrown in the garbage. Imagine a haircut given by a sibling that hated you; that's what the brushes were like. I still have all my old stuff from Grenadier and Ral Partha. Oh how I loved Ral Partha paints.
How's that kill team going? You thinking Q2? Q3? Q4? For getting that Drukhari kill team done.
What is better: glazing or wet blending? And how old are you? (I know i shouldn't, but I have reasons - we both have something in common...) Nevermind. What is better to use, and when you wet blend or/and glaze minis do you use as well dry brush or/and washes?
Scott, this video is very useful for me. It is short, focused, clear with lots of bits and pieces. Sounds like there was little benefit from using glazing medium Lahmiam Medium. When would you want/need to use something other than water? When does water fail to produce a good result? As always, I plan on experimenting to see what works for me. Thx for the video!
How is glaze different from blend? I am new to mini painting and it looked similar esp. on that axe at the start of this video. Is it just that blazing is for different colors and blend for similar colors?
Great video and really helped alot defining the uses of it. Something I've had trouble getting just right so can't wait to try it out again!
So. Dumb question I can’t seem to find anywhere. If you use Vallejo glaze medium with paint on a wet pallet will it interfere with anything? or should you use a dry pallet? I’m trying to learn this new technique and it’s not turning out right. Just trying to narrow it down. Used both dry and wet and they both look like hot garbage so far. If I can use it on both i guess I will pick one and keep practicing with it
Important question!...
Did you finish the wych kill team???
K so the first thing you talked about, is what i was doing wrong.
I never wiped the brush... i was just putting watery paint onto my models and it would run, looking terribly shitty.
Thanks, I'm gonna sub and go thru all your vids now.
I dont knyw why but my "glazes" do not glaze. I tried every consistency. If I dont use a papertowel I get the mentioned shade effect but if I do use one I just get a less opaque layer that allows now feathering.
In 2:25 when you talk about the differences of using paints or inks for glazing, you mean for instance Vallejo Game Ink? and diluting them so thin as with the paints?
Which companies inks would you reccomend? like Vallejo, Army Painter etc.
Your editing on these videos is just killer. The cut out from the video to your commentary was excellent.
Great explanation of glazing. First time I've heard a good breakdown of ink vs. paint in glazes.
Rinse with saltwater a lot; that helps with irrigation and pain relief. Also, put your icepacks in the toes of dress socks, tie the tops together, drape them over the top of your head, and put on a baseball cap. That was a lot more comfortable that bandaging around my face.
That icepack tip: absolutely clutch
Totally thought you were stating to rinse your glazes off your brush with salt water for a moment, then realized that brushes don't feel pain. Or do they? O.o

Scott puts the pain in painting! 🎨 😱
@@Miniac
Pics or it never happened, Scott! 📸 🖼
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do a tutorial on feathering. please paint a tank
Thank you Scott. May you have a suggested brand/set of Inks to use for Glazing?
In many of your videos that you are testing a technique, I see you use a square of material to display the technique prior to doing it on a miniature. I think this is the first video that I have seen that you call it styrene (something I had never heard of). Perhaps it's a newb thing, but I have been interested in trying some of these techniques on something prior to doing it on miniatures but haven't been sure what medium would be best. Do you have a recommendation of where to get styrene (or the little squares you use) to practice on and how thick of material to get? I have been wondering for quite some time what you have been using and I am hoping this finally might be the video. Thank you for all your videos, they have been a really big inspiration for me to get started.
Like that you actually add in extra video of comments that you feel like you didn't explain properly.
What inks do you use? I guess the Citadel washes are [excuse the foolish question] more like washes than inks? This would really help me out : ]
Voice of Clouseau: “Ah, yes…the old “Just got my wisdom teeth pulled” ploy!”😂
Love the way you demonstrate these on flat surfaces first. Don’t stop doing this, it’s clearer than anything else I’ve seen
2022 here, is your killteam finished?
Thanks for the glazing help!
oh how the term glazed has changed in 5 years 😅
What is the ratio for an ink based glaze mixture? Still 4:1? Or is that different?
The chipmunk part got me rolling! Thanks for the helpful video!
Thank god you mentioned the wisdom teeth, I thought out of nowhere you decided to do this video with a mouth full of marbles..
BRUSHLICKER!!!!! Do what you gotta do I guess.
Great explanation - thanks. That is really helpful!
And you have my sympathy regarding the wisdom tooth removal. Been there, done that, talked funny for a while... ;)
Can you glaze over black? For example black Space Marine eyes.
Great video as always! Lately I’m having fun with inks, washes and glazes to speed “paint” tabletop quality.
Hey scot! Did you finish this kill team? You’ve got 1 year left!
So i’m painting alpha legion would applying a green glaze make the metallic blue underneath look more teal?
Just got a Miniac ad on a Miniac video. Almost tricked me into thinking I was watching the real video.
its 2022 and when he said hell finish that model then i checked seeing oh this must be in december 2021 only to realize it was a joke
Miniac! Are you on your way to finishing your kill team here in 2022?
Good information without a product placement sales pitch.
2022 speaking, did you manage to finish the wytch?
this way of speaking is like the person is too lazy to pronounce words...
2022 hah? damn only 2 more years??!!!!! you need to paint really fast
This is the real world lol you don’t know what hell you talking about 😂 models are not the real world
It's 2022, did you finish painting that army yet? 😁
Will you be getting t-shirts and hoodies back in the store anytime??
lol i got all four yanked at once don't be a weener. thanks for the glaze tutorial though.
Are you almost done with that Witch yet? It is almost 2022.
It's 2022. How's that kill team coming along?
So ... what’s the difference between a filter and a glaze? Hope your mouth feels better!!!
I've never heard anyone use the word filter to refer to anything other than what a glaze can accomplish, so I'd assume they mean the same thing.
Is your drukhari kill team finished yet Miniac?
