Just to get ahead of the comments:
Yes, I lick my brush a lot. I've been doing it for years as a habit. You'll notice that approximately 30%-40% I'm doing it to a brush that has no paint in it at all. So, why do I do it?
1. It sharpens the tip of my brush.
2. it clears the paint out of the brush.
3. it's immediately accessible because it's very close to my miniature because I paint with the mini right next to my face. Acrylic paint dries very fast so when I wetblend/feather I can immediately get back to work w/minimal time in between brush clearing.
4. Sometime's it's just a random habit, there's no reason why I'm doing it.
All the best painters do. ;)
Acryllic paint is non-toxic. It won't bite! I thought I was the only one who does this until I saw a video of painter Sam Lenz doing it. I legit laughed so hard I peed a little.
I think we all do this lol
You can also just wipe it off on the wet palette the sponge and save yourself a mouthful of paint.
@@andord123 It is unfortunately not as fast or as good at cleaning the brush.
Legend says that he got into the hobby as an excuse to fuel his paint eating addiction
lol
One for you, one for me.
Once you taste black, you never go back. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!
Me too lol
I prefer glue
New drinking game - everytime the brush goes in his mouth, shot of tequila.
Alcohol poisoning and he's still putting paint on the palette
it's like 100 shots of tequila.
aaaaaannd they're all dead.
Brush in the mouth, disturbingly toxic
You animal!!!!! :D
I cannot fault a man for licking his brush after tasting the sweet ambrosia that was 90's Citadel Bleached Bone.
And then came along the Foundation paints.....worst tasting things in history!
So I am not the only one who remembers that sweet sweet goodness. WTH Citadel.. what did you put in it!!
@@meatybtz Plastic crack
@@rickyupjohn7045 Tastes so dry. And then the washes. Badab black smelled and tasted so bad.
Tasted Vallejo model color paint shortly after that and slowly phased out my citadel paints.
Taste may or may not have been part of the reason
My legion sized army of Tomb King bow in praise to your comment.
me: "how you get so smooth transitions?"
scott: "saliva"
Never ask Scott to lunch after a wet blend session. You’ll get “Nah man I’m stuffed, just had a bunch of citadel with some scale 75 on the side”
Paint consumption aside, dude you killed it in this video. Well done 👍🏽
First of all. Eeww.
Second, I appreciate the amount of tedious video editing that went into EVERY jump cut that swapped between 3 cameras. Getting them all synced with audio and them gross brush licks.
Third. Good blend. Need more videos like this. maybe less consumption of paint.
Forth, I legit wet myself at 22:21
"Going to blow on it because at this point I have enough paint in my mouth that I can use it as an airbrush." but in all seriousness I've been watching your videos and learning a lot so thank you for helping me get better at mini painting!
Show Idea. You and Sam Lenz discuss and sample all sorts of paints and washes in search of the tastiest paint.
Best. Idea. Ever.
Meet up at Vince Venturellas house, that man has more paint brands than I have miniatures and he’s a fellow brush licker
Top 10 Tastiest Must Have Paints For Miniatures
Definitely not Scale75! That stuff tastes baaad.
"I personally consume more paint in a day than food", said Scott (Not really, but its true)
**SMACKS LIPS** "Because I ( *lick* ) acrylic paint dries ( *lick* ) so gosh darn ( *lick* ) fast ( *lick* *lick* *lick* )
Great video, love that you took the time to edit the video to show every single time you licked the brush
LOL man i laughed so hard i teared up , shit happened the same time i was reading this 9:10 - 9:25
"Clear the brush by consuming the paint... because I'm a filthy animal!" -- And... I am subscribed.
Kinda disappointed there wasnt a counter for everytime he licked his brush, great video regardless though!
its not the paint eating i worry about, its how long it might have been since that wet pallette sponge has been washed...
Yeah... and he wonders why his toilet is getting so much more use the last few months... so... damn... NASTY!
Your tutorials always go above and beyond, but i gotta say: this video really is something special. We can really see what a high-caliber painter goes through, step by step, to achieve those amazing results. It is a window into your process, the likes of which I personally had not seen before. Just amazing, and really spectacular production values.
P.S. I have now seen both you and Sam Lenz use the brush-licking "technique". We may need a tutorial on that - maybe a candidate for an April video? :)
Don't start you'll never stop, it's a bane, a curse, not technique! 😂
When you join the licking-side there is no way back.....Just join the "dark" side😆
Also, good choice for the background music. Nice and relaxing.
I think I heard that music in a porno.
Do you know where i can find this song?
My brush licking starting when I read about one of the old 'Eavy Metal painters doing it in a old White Dwarf to achieve a fine point. Brush Lickers Unite!
A new Miniac video?
Now I am the creamiest
Eww. You eat your paint with that mouth?
Your channel alone has revitalised my love for painting, the new techniques I'm trying the new props I get (got a wet pallet just because of your suggestion and it was one of the single best changes to my painting)
Just wanted to take a moment to comment and show Abit of appreciation, I have noticed a huge improvement in my painting from your videos and now I'm cracking into my dark imperium box set with a passion. Thank so much for the time and effort you put in.
Gotta say though this video was really good. Loved the format and the content.
You said, "Doing it live." And, "Creamy." He he hehehehehe he he
Army Painter tastes better than Vallejo. Clearly your R&D is on point, keep up the good work
Just got back into painting D&D minis after 34 years. My sons are playing D&D w/ me DMing the sessions. I can't play D&D w/o minis, I could but I choose not to. I had a large collection which I gave to my brother when we moved to an area that had zero RP gamers. I got tired of playing sessions by myself and letting the dice determine whether I failed or not. I was an okay painter, advanced for the time I guess. I am blown away by how the hobby has advanced due to the info on the net. I have learned a ton and gotten back up to speed faster than I expected due to channels such as yours. Thanks for the awesome advice and help. Your work is gorgeous and has helped get me going faster than I would have.
Next fanmade compilation: "24 hours of Miniac licking a brush".
Great video. I’m a brush licker too. Since the 80s. Failed the 12 step brush lickers anonymous program. I’m just glad I’m not painting watch faces for soldiers during WW1, else I’d have no jaw.
I love cream. I love brushlicking. I'm a normal person, please don't flag this video.
I just can’t train myself to painting one part for 30 mins to 60 mins, which is why I will never be a pro painter.
I paint to relax and I don’t find repetition very relaxing, I’m happy if my work looks clean and the paint doesn’t go everywhere
I will stay an intermediate painter, not trying to win a contest
Having said that, your work is very beautiful and I appreciate your tutorials
Thanks for the helpful tips
Yo I've always wondered what kinda jedi trick you do when you put the brush to your face but now I know you are just licking it.
legend has it that he is still making that highlight larger
Oh man you had me in tears with the text overlay of the explanation at minute 22. Literally laughing out loud had to stop painting to not fucking everything up
but what if i want MOIST blends instead?
The last time I painted a mini was back in 1990 ... all of my HeroQuest minis. Just getting back into it at the age of 39. Can't tell you how helpful (and creamy) all of your video's are. Thanks so much.
5:54 and 8:10 don't eat paint kids. Use your finger and thumb to shape your brush tip. Older you will be thankful.
Edit: Please Google "acrylic slow drying medium" if the reason you eat paint is because your paint is drying too quickly. Nearly all minitures paints are acrylic so it should work and give you more time to wet blend without needing to eat your paint.
Seriously, paint is full of chemicals that you really don't want to be consuming on a regular basis.
I appreciate the level of production that went into this, picking every camera angle for the bit, and mishmashing it together takes a damn lot of time. This is how every painting tutorial should be. And we got to see you being you, as a fellow brush licker, i salute you, and this is easily one of your best videos to date, awesome to watch while painting my own stuff. Off to a great year Scott!!
You must take poops with excellent highlights and transitions.
I have learned that a very MOIST pallet is required to achieve the CREAMIEST blends... HAIL AND KILL!!
Eat all the paint you want. Painting is literally in your blood. Also, the production quality of this vid is great. The quick jump cuts gives a continuity and context which I have *never* seen in any tutorial vids on painting. This is an amazingly effective format for teaching!
(My beloved) Vallejo Game Inks are definitely glossy, vibrant and intense...I wouldn't call them washes although I use them in a wash style frequently. I have noticed at least one of my bottles (yellow) is more watery and wash like though, for some reason.
I can't say I've ever tried, but If I tried to wash something with one of my old citadel inks or my Dahler and Rowney inks, it would be way too overpowering. I'm not sure if this is the case for VGC inks or not. Either way, you can use "washes" for glazing as well, no rules here.
@@Miniac VGC inks are pretty similar to the old Citadels. I've used them to make glazes and tint metallic paints, but they wouldn't be good for washing unless you thinned them a lot.
I was going to leave a comment like this but you beat me to it.
@@Miniac I've only got VGC and S75 inks to compare, but apart from S75 being super duper glossy (whereas VGC is just glossy), they seem really similar.
Neither is nothing at all like GW or Army Painter washes (which were called "Quickshade Inks" in the past...).
Huh the one game colour ink I have is not glossy and is just a slightly translucent paint it is thin though
All I can say is that this entire video... yes the creamy mmmm sumptuous blends and even the lip smacking brush licking..... was just oh so good and tasty.
Even though I feel fairly competent at blending, its nice to see how other people do it.
On a side note, I recently picked up a few Raphael 8404 brushes after you said you liked them in another video. After a few weeks of using them, I have found that I really enjoy working with them, and will be using them instead of series 7 brushes from now on.
I also grabbed an 8404 but haven't used it yet. Haven't been too happy with my W&N series 7 brushes and wanted to switch so the recommendation was well timed.
Whoa, 30 minute tutorial... awesome stuff, cheers dude!
That droplet you keep getting on your brush handle FIX...take a little milliput make a snake and put it around the top of the ferrule. Problem solved. KUTGW bro
Dude 😂 great vid as always ! So many layers 😅 wasn’t it great the 300th time ? Haha why a 1000 layerrrrrs .. perfection I guess :P
Maybe add some flavoring to the paints for maximum hobby enjoyment?
Hej what brand ink do you recormend, if not Vallejo? When I search for "Warhammer ink" og "figurmaling ink" (I'm from Denmark) only Vallejo comes up.
Do this work? Liquitex Professional Akryl Ink
The smack of the lips when tasting the paint really seals the deal for me. Thank you for the creamy video.
While the brush licking did bother me, I really appreciated that you had the camera on the palette and on the miniature. Being able to see how you mix and thin your paints and use your wet palette is very beneficial for this beginner painter. ☺
Painting-wise I think it's your best video :) It illustrates a very important lesson: a lot of people expect that a single technique is a silver bullet, and it turns out you have to combine different things & do a lot of back and forth to get great results. I liked also that you've shown those little tricks like putting different intensity edge highlights depending on nearest surface brightness.
100% agree. This is by far your strongest video Miniac!
I finally found this video again. I have been looking for this video on painting purple armor, but the SEO is so bad that I basically had to sift through images hoping I'd find it. You know what you do in this video? Blend purple armor. Do you know what I get when I Google "blend purple armor miniature painting"? Not this video, that means terrible SEO.
That’s a creamy blend
I don't know if I ever commented on this vid before, but... THANK YOU!!!!! I started watching your vids probably in June or July as you were one of the first I discovered when I searched RUclips for mini painting vids. I was wanting to do some mini painting with some amount of technique in mind after many years of not touching paint at all. I got one mini more or less done just as a warm up, then started on my major project which basically stalled after laying down the 2 base colors. I'm planning on getting back to it now that I've taken the time to search again and refreshed my knowledge of how to blend. I'll wait until I have an entire weekend to devote to it. Again, thanks!!!!
You try so hard to not lick your brush.
And you fail miserably. 😂
No worries though, I think a lot of painters lick the brush.
i had never considered licking the brush or consuming paint - until this video
as i mainly paint dark angle colours, my shit is going to be dark green :-/
@@andynorton4854 you'd have to eat a lot of padding for that.
Avoid browns though. They universally taste like crap.
😂
Also if you atrts adding stuff to your water it can taste gross, I'm in the habit and started using soapy water recently 🤢
@@MrConna6 I bet that tastes terrible.
Lucky for me my tea cup is way bigger and different from my water cup.
After drinking my brush water a few times I felt it was necessary.
Danny Eccles i feel you i dont know how often that has already happened to me
Acrylic paint is not toxic. However, nontoxic does not mean "safe". While the "acrylic" in acrylic paint stands for the acrylic suspension that causes the pigment to bind to the surface, the pigments themselves are made of some horrifying organic compounds that you definitely should not expose yourself to for years on end.
As a general rule of chemistry: arenes and cyclocarbons are very much carcinogenic. Some of the most vibrant colours can only be obtained with using these kind of engineered compounds in pigments.
We don't fully know the scale of the impact of licking brushes because it's too soon to tell, but long-term exposure to such organic compounds has historically resulted in a much higher cancer risk. Just avoid.
I leave my disgust
Watching videos where a model goes from sprues to Heavy Metal quality paint job in 20 minutes can be disheartening when the viewer is unable to even come close. We know stuff gets cut out for time, but to see what it actually takes gives a more realistic view into the Madness of this hobby. You have done us a great service... :)
I did the same thing as a kid but only with water colors.. I can oddly remember it's flavor every time I see you do it lol.
New drinking game: 1 shot for every time Scott is licking his brush. lol after this 35 minute video you are done forever :DD
Noob here! Been binging these Miniac videos before even painting his first miniature... I think I just picked up a new habit of brush licking 😅 Great vid!
So how do you clear the brush and do this technique WITHOUT eating paint and sponge water?
Thanks for trying not to lick the brush.
It grosses my out when I see people doing it.
However it feels like you show it on purpose.
is there a particular reason to why you don't use a paint retarder instead of... you know... consuming paint?
I feel a drinking game coming on. If only there was something he did over and over in this video that I could make my friends drink everytime he does said thing..
I like how dude cuts to him licking the brush on purpose every time he does it. Trolling the shit out of the comments.
Brushlicker! This was a fantastic video. PLEASE come to NOVA Open and teach and class. I can always use more blending instruction
Hey Scott. Long time watcher. Have learnt alot from yourself so thanks. I always have a problem problem with mostly black models. For example doing Space Marine models like Deathwatch. I would love to see you do a Eavy Metal Deathwatch. Im rubbish at wet blending no matter how much i try and still having issues with scale 75. Thanks and all the best. Russ
Spit is literally so good for brushes
You know your hardcore when you watch a 30 minute video on painting a calf and love it.
Mashed my mouse button on the like button, off to Best Buy for a new mouse, thanks again for sharing
I didn't notice you where doing it until you pointed it out and now I notice it every time!
I know many brushlickers, and I 100% get why you guys do it...but imma be real, I know EXACTLY how gross my wet pallet water is, and I have no desire to grow mushrooms inside my colon from some weird acrylic fuelled fungal infection.
...blend video was great...just wanted to give my two cents on brush licking 😂😂😂
This video is fantastic, super detailed and explanatory, it manages to make well understood to a neophyte the process of painting, the dosage of color and consistency of painting.
Thanks a lot Scott!
I'm howling from all the paint eating camera cuts. omg
I'm guessing you're wearing reading glasses (+#) to get better close vision vs rx for viewing distance (-#). whats your preferred strength?
Fortunately I'm nearsighted, so seeing things up close isn't too much of a problem.
"I have a compulsion to put the brush in my mouth but I'm trying my best not to" the rest of the video is a compilation of you putting the brush in your mouth 😂
Please add a counter for every time you lick the brush!
God damn I am so glad to hear you've had that sitting for two years. I've been so stressed that I've left my Imperial Fists with a basecoat and highlights for a few months, it's good to know that it's kind of normal while waiting for inspiration.
so i learned that if u want a crisp blend, u got to eat the paint
August 2019 ... Miniac died of acrylic color poisoning
uhmmmm, creamy..., blending.... that hot. Joke aside, thank for the demonstrating video
good video. Someone needs to count the consumes. It has to be in the millions
I am still struggling to wet blend does anyone have any more tips to help maybe I am doing something really stupid but I just end up making a big mess
I have actually properly practised and am finaly getting it!!! Started with two green colours as they seemed easiest
Also is it just me who starts to feel sick with all the quick changing between cameras
It is totally sacrifice for me to watch you painting, but also help me with the blending. Now I understand the way to paint blending way better than before. Thanks man. Please more of this stuff
If you get in to the hobby get non-toxic paint got it.
The result looks great, I must say I didn't see a lot of glazing, is that pretty typical for you? I was wondering if some of the wet blending back and forth could have been eliminated with a few glazes? :) still great result! Love your videos!
Hey Miniac, I'm new about painting miniatures. I just got some warhammer 40K (Tau). My goal is not necesseraly to play. I will do it, but not for the moment. As a beginner painter, and because I don't have too much time for my hobbies : in order to improve my skills, should I focus on a miniature one by one (and take my time) or should I try to paint 3 to 5 in a row ? Thank you for your videos ! Hugs from France !
Did I actually watch that entire thing?? 432567 cuts. 16430 of them were to see you lick your brush. DRINK!
Btw the only reason I watch your videos are the sick rifts at the end....kidding man thanks for sharing what’s in your melon to help us lackeys ;)
I hear that you can highlight purple with a basic flesh tone, I have yet to try this but it looks like you have a good style going already.
I could see that working
I know it’s an old video, but I truly appreciate the spite required in the edit to cut to face cam for *every* brush lick in the session 😭
So, according to the video, to get a good NMM I have to lick my brush even more than usually. Guess it's time to find my local Brush Lickers Anonymous support group.
Aren't you supposed to not dunk the whole ferrule of your brush into the water?
No, that should be fine. As long as you're not mashing it down on the bottom of the cup.
"See? Look at that! The paint that I put right there is already dry. This is why I eat paint. THIS IS WHY I EAT PAINT!"
Ey this was pretty chill to watch, wouldn't mind seeing this more often!
Oh, so you also enjoyed watching him lick his brush? :)
As always, I love your videos. This one in particular though man, excellent editing. I can't imagine the amount of time that went into this video in the editing room. Great content and I'm happy I finally get to watch someone work live with Scale 75!
DONT PUT THE BRUSH IN YOUR MOUTH
I love that even though you're self-conscious about eating the paint, you still cut to it every time you do it. Also this is a fantastic look into just how much work goes into these wicked paint jobs. Respect!
Awesome video - very timely for me to see this. Thanks for the hard work in putting this together!
By the way, I once read that it would take consuming 90 bottles of Vallejo paint before it reached a dangerous level, so you're good. ;)
You have the same mania to suck the brush with your mouth. Ja ja ja
Fantastic video, miniac, thanks! I have been licking paint for 35 years, probably not the best thing to do, but probably less harmful than breathing in diesel fumes in an urban environment! ;)
The shape you have painted there lends itself well to loaded brush: have you considered it?
