when the opening note gives you goosebumps
u kno it's that Drop D
why no everlong
I'll admit, myself, when I go for a drop tuning, I prefer drop A :)
That must make me less than someone who just hasn't grown up...
not a child at heart, but... a demon? a ravening beast? :o
My favorite drop d song is Blew - Nirvana. Particularly live from in utero tour with Grohl on drums and an extra guitar
@@caprise-music6722 that is a good one too
i think its drop C but can be played in drop d but probably my favorite riff has to be shove it or my own summer by deftones, the minute i heard the intro riff i fell in love with the song
do this as a series but for EVERY tuning
Just Nik Nocturnal things
Can't wait for drop F🤤
Jesus dude EVERY. That’s like, 100s
Can't wait for E standard
Yessss, I request DADGAD!
The three big boys that made me drop ‘er down were the following…
1.) No More Tears-Ozzy Osborne
2.) Laid to Rest-Lamb of God
3.) Lateralus-Tool
No more tears is Drop C#
@@gergoretvari6373 technically, but I mean to get the vibe and structure is basically the same. Like when musicians tune down a half step, it’s still standard tuning structure for chords and scales.
Thought lateralus was E standard
@@thaking16201 nope, DADGBE. Try playing it again with it and see how much it improves the playability :)
Shepherd of Fire- Avenged Sevenfold🤘
AIC and Soundgarden wrote some of the best riffs in this tuning.
Facts
Alice in Chains for the most part was Eb and drop C#
Rain When I Die
Tool too
outshined>
Some of my favourite Drop D riffs have gotta be Everlong - Foo Fighters, Show Me How To Live - Audioslave, Moby Dick - Led Zeppelin, Run Like Hell - Pink Floyd (I know the main riff itself is on the regular D string but it's still just so fun to play) and Stockholm Syndrome by Muse, plus I've also composed some cool riffs in Drop D with my band as well. All in all, it's definitely a great tuning that everyone should experiment with and you might come across some lovely little gems of your own
Everlong 🤘
@@northernkiwi it is played with a low D, so it’s either in drop D or D standard
I can’t believe Everlong was not in this.
@@northernkiwi Moby Dick is in Drop D.
Northern Kiwi It is in Drop D
Anything that Adam Jones has written. That would be my favourite.
I really like how simple, yet effective tool riffs are.
Fun fact: Pantera, the album "Cowboys from Hell" have two songs in Drop-D: Primal Concrete Sledge, and Medicine Man.
And Primal Concrete Sledge has one of the best riffs of History !
Good songs. Let's not forget Dime likes to toy around in the 420 Hz realm on some tracks, albums.
I sure do love Pantera! For some reason, I thought Message In Blood on “Cowboys from Hell” was in Drop-D too.
Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold was the first song I heard in drop D, it just made me want to tune my guitar to that tuning and just rock out.
Bat country and nightmare are my 2 favourite Avenged Sevenfold songs
That song and music video on MTV is what turned me into a metal head and made me start playing guitar
I was thinking of unholy confessions
All fine and dandy till you discover Drop C. That's when the fun begins.
Drop C is my standard tuning
2005 go brrr
welcome to the world of SOAD, brother
@@sagegeary6739 not only SOAD. *All* of the 2000s Metalcore Bands used it. (Killswitch engage; Bullet for my Valentine; As I Lay Dying; August Burns Red; many more)
@@Glintingbeetle there’s so many great bands that use drop c, the tuning just has a good sonic feeling
D standard feels natural to me. Something about standard e tuning is just too tight and stiff.
Killing in the name of intro, without a doubt
False.
@@KrwiomoczBogurodzicy How can my personal choice be false...
@@41neve85,
I stand corrected. I should have written: _wrong_ choice.
@@KrwiomoczBogurodzicy nah
@@KrwiomoczBogurodzicy nah its more like "not your type of music"
Anything from Muse and A7X works so well.
Also Sad But True is in D standard, not Drop C.
Wrong Sad But True. Neither of them is drop D but he mentioned the non-Metallica one for comedic purposes and probably to see if anyone would comment something like this.
@@plasmakitten4261 Ah, haven’t heard about the other Sad But True song, my bad
Tool - "Ænima" (opening riff)
Silverchair - "Freak"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Drown"
Pantera - "Walk"
Clutch - "Regulator"
walk is d standard not drop d
@@DumbPeopleIHate D'oh! Well, I learned something today!
@@pantone369c hell yeah! Common mistake brutha 🤘
Thanks, wanted to learn the opening riff wasn't sure of the name
@@lemon.880 this is his own list, he is not about the video
I'd have to say 'Bat country' by a7x or 'all nightmare long' by metallica
All nightmare long is in D standard, not drop D
@@rockeiro1916 no it is in drop D according to the official tabs
@@elliethebat4761 there is where you went wrong. Metallica tab books are... inadequate.
@@LuminaryCursorem wasn't the book, was the app guitar tabs ultimate
@@rockeiro1916 Wait, what? I know Metallica plays rarely in drop tunings and occasionally in D standard, but I have never considered the possibility of All Nightmare Long being in any other tuning than drop D. My mind is blown. I have to look up the Nimes live version right away.
The first drop D song I ever learned was Everlong. Next was Slither by Velvet Revolver. But most recently I’ve taken quit a liking to Chippin’ In by Samurai. I love how the tuning can be both heavy and beautiful.
Any A7X song, but my favorite to play is Unholy Confessions, it just hits different.
My favorite drop D riff is probably a tie between 'Laid to Rest' by Lamb of God or Ratt's 'Lay It Down.'
Recently, though, the intro to 'Icronic' by Polyphia has also been up there.
I was going to say "Lay it Down" but you beat me to it.
Same
Outshined - Soundgarden is a killer drop D riff 🤘
Except when you play it too fast ;-)
Definitely in my top 3 drop d riffs
SPOONMAN! (Followed closely by Outshined)
@@Jeroen_K was literally gonna say the same thing. He needs to slow it down and put some feeling into it. That riff is wayyy better when it’s played right. Ik this dude knows better. It kinda really bothered me lol
@@chitarra0302 Yeah, I'm sure he knows better! I am not calling it a crime against humanity, but that riff loses a lot of its quality when it's not played in a slower laid back groove.
Unchained is the first drop d riff I learned and it still my favorite! Eddie's use of the flanger on this riff is iconic!
That's one of my favorites as well! Although it's actually not drop D, it's drop C#
@@REDW1NG94 Yea because Eddie is in e flat, so the structure is still the same for drop d. I instinctively just think of it as drop d because of the structure
@@BeniRey32 gotcha
For me It’s Out Of The Black by Royal Blood, if you haven’t heard of them they’re surprisingly popular nowadays and there’s no guitar, just a bass transposed up an octave to make it sound like a guitar and it sounds pretty nice
Favorite drop d riff, though simple, is Velvet Revolvers “Slither”
Rock and roll Never Dies, it just passes out every now and then.
it passes out every once in a while from head banging too hard
Billy Talent is a great example. They´re using drop D in literally every song (except for three ones that are played in drop d flat). It´s amazing how much you can do with this tuning!
I agree. Fallen Leaves is so much fun to play!
Ian is one of the best modern day guitarists, no question. The way he can play live, and make it sound there are 3 different tracks going on at the same time is truly a sight to behold! There's just nothing like what he does out there. Epitome of originality!
Yes, Ian is amazing!
Agreed that Ian is one of the best modern day guitarists
Try Honesty ftw
Touch, Peel & Stand is up there for me. Still love that riff to this day. Everyone knows the song.
*agrees heartily in Tantric*
@@russellzauner tantric is garbage but days of the new is amazing
Dotn was one of my favorite bands from that era. So underrated
Been watching your videos for a year now. I love how you have an appreciation for all types of music and guitars. You’re the reason why I bought a PRS McCarty Core so be sure to let Paul know..lol. Thanks for the high quality content
Home - Dream Theater
Just love the Wah stabs and the overall heaviness of that riff.
even the groove after the wah riff is heavy af
@@anishmaddipatla3530 The whole thing is just awesome! Even the clean section that starts the whole song is great, even if it’s not super heavy
Ridiculously good song.
the riff after the wah is so CRUNCHY
My top pick as well! Dream Theater at their peak!
Random suggestion: You should do a video on rock music from different countries around the world. It would be interesting to see how rock has evolved and fit itself into the cultures of different places. I'm from Bangladesh and I would suggest bands like Nemesis, Indalo and Artcell from over there.
Bites za dusto
I support this idea!!
Yeah Australia has a few rock bands that are really good. (ACDC obviously, Australian Crawl, The angels, INXS, etc.)
@@brandonliddle3419 men at work
Nothing Tops Warfaze, Aurthohin
Thanks for playing my suggestion, Tyler! Fun and informative video as always.
From the first video you did with that guitar...has to be one of the best sounding guitars I have heard in ages. You wear it well, man. Your playing has improved immensely over the years. Well done!
My heart is broken from the unjustified absence of TOOL
I seriously thought this could have been all TOOL riffs :D
Ok well i may as well click off the video lol
@@DexXx84 Tool(Inc) would have done more than just demonetize the video. @epicness01 would have gotten wish of video not existing.
Makes you wonder why he filtered his picks the way he did. Idk.
He musta been. High.
I just have to toss out Silverchair Frogstomp as a great Drop D album. Israel's Son and Pure Massacre were songs that I used to play along to all the time back in the good ol' 90s. Also, Pantera 5 Minutes Alone. Great video!
five min alone is in d standard
YES
@@welchysawse D standard 1/4 flat. Dime used oddly specific tunings lol
@TheTribalist trust me i know
"Isreal's Son" by Silverchair started my drop D kick about 25 years ago!
4:45 missed opportunity to tell Santiago “hey it’s sad… but true…”
i can already tell this is going to be an amazing video.
the little slow part from unnatural selection (muse) makes me feel so powerful i must say
I'm so glad you did this vid on drop d, I felt like kind of a punk rock beginner but I love the sound so much, it was like a guilty pleasure almost 🤣🤘 keep on rocking my friend.
One of my favorites to play and had a great sound all around is Shine - Collective Soul.
Ratt - Lay It Down
THEM BONES
I tell you brother i love your channel. I work 70 hrs a week most weeks. So i put my guitar up. Im 43 now, started playing when i was like 14. I haven't played my guitar in over a year but after watching a few of your videos i broke it out, dusted it off. My favorite drop d song back in the day was spoonman by soundgarden. First drop d song i played. From that point on i jammed in drop d quite a bit. Thanks for what you do bro. Keep up the great work 👍
israels son by silverchair is the riff that introduced me to drop d and will forever hold a special place in my heart for that reason
Unsung and Everlong…still my go-tos when messing around in drop D
When i tune to drop d by ear i always use everlong to check if its tuned correctly. Still after years i play that song almost everyday. That riff is just so fun to play. Lamb of god and deftones in drop d is fun to plsy as well
I think Helmet have to be the masters of drop D
Missed lay it down, by ratt. One of the best drop d songs I've ever heard
Fave Drop-D tunes: "Spoonman" by Soundgarden and "Shine" by Collective Soul. Sheer auditory awesomeness.
Staples of the genre, my friends!
What a great video. Solid playing, as always, but I especially appreciate all the theory. I don’t recall seeing such a theory-heavy video from you.
Oh - and I’ll always have a soft spot for “You’re in Love” by Ratt.
Mine is either Unholy Confessions by A7X or Psycho by Muse
You'll laugh, but Rocky Mountain High is the song that got me into guitar and it is in fact in drop D
I love playing bass in Drop D! I recently learned *Killing in the Name* and it took me ages to remember where that little scale comes in XD. I only know 2 drop D songs so far, that being KITN and "Cut the Cord" by Shinedown. Needless to say, I plan to learn a lot more Drop D songs in future, particularly "All Nightmare Long" by Metallica, to really give my fingers a workout.
Drop D is one of my favourite tunings. Majority of the songs and riffs I’ve composed for my band have been in drop d.
Tool's bass riff on SOBER!
I love avenged sevenfold's Waking the Fallen album. CHAPTER 4 and Unholy Confessions have awesome riffs!
It is called Slither
When they played live as smkc it goes crazy as a band introduced
Just signed up for the lessons online for $5 cant wait to start learning! Your videos is part of what made me want to learn guitar.
Tyler please make more videos using the purple 594. That thing is just magical to look at! 🤘🏻
Silverchair: Pure Massacre, not the Frist drop D song I learn but it the most fun to play for me

I just love how epic that intro is and sounds🤘
my go to riff to play in Drop D is Jambi's opening riff by Tool, melts face every time
I need to figure out that riff its so damn good
It would be really cool if u went over Mick Mars from motley Crue he is really underated and my favorite guitarist
When I was starting out, I bought a Soundgarden tablature book. Was introduced to this tuning, amongst others early on. Outshined was the first drop D song I learned and still a fav to play
Good god!! That PRS sounds soooo good!
My fav drop D riff is defo Queen's "The Prophet's Song"; heavy, proggy and quite groovy.
I love playing Muse - Unnatural Selection 🤘🏻
To me it is about the great artists and their work where drop D is frequently used. Ty Tabor (has used variations throughout the years of standard drop D, 1/2 step down C sharp, and full step to C), Tom Morello, Adam Jones, Edward Van Halen (infrequently, but very memorably), Nuno Bettencourt, Chris Cornell & Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell. The thing all of these artists have in common are heavy songs that stick in your head, compelling you to play these riffs when noodling with your guitar.
One of my all time favorite riffs, regardless of tuning, is in Drop-D: Ratt's "Lack of Communication". Classic riff!
Opeth-Blackwater Park
The clean riff is one my favourite riffs ever
Lamb of God; Avenged Sevenfold; Asking Alexandria; Billy Talent (my fav)
Soo many good drop D bands
i dig your taste a considerable amount
I haven’t tuned into drop d yet but it sounds awesome so might be trying it out soon thanks Tyler
Slither is my all time favorite Drop D song, such a raunchy and malevolent sound
"It's in drop C standard" *Visible Confusion*
The Melvins have some great songs in drop D like Honey Bucket, Hooch, and The Bit
Absolutely!
I like how in the intro there, the pitch of the note starts to drop *before* you actually touch the knob :)
I can only think of one explanation for this.
Your studio must be haunted by a very helpful ghost.
There's a nice octaver in the background as well giving it a pretty massive presence from just tuning down.
Your pick hit me in the eye.
Everlong, Spoonman, Hey Man Nice Shot. 🤣 I’ve never played any of the ones you went over lol.
I think the first drop D song I learned in its entirety was Tyler Childers White House Road.
That song kicks ass. Didn't know it was drop D. Maybe it's time to learn it, i worked on it a bit in voice lessons....
@@HeyZeus096 well it’s technically not drop D. Tyler plays basically all his songs in drop D tuning with a capo on 5.
So glad someone mentioned hey man nice shot. That and Everlong are pretty much the two songs that got me into music
TOOL would’ve been perfect. Forty Six & Two, Schism (chorus riff?), I’m pretty sure all of their popular songs are all in a Drop tuning.
Straight out of the gate you have my favourite drop D riff so fair play mate
My favourite was from Saviour by Rise Against. Absolutely beauty in a nostalgia trip!
Lay it Down by Ratt, the most badass drop D riff I’ve ever heard
Yeah..!! One of the best riff ever..!! 🤘
i remember my first time tuning down ever was learning some Mötley Crüe.. most of their songs are in D🤘🏼
Yeah, they're in D Standard but it's still pretty easy to play songs like Girls Girls Girls in Drop D
"Good Times" off of Skyscraper is a great Steve Vai 12-string acoustic tune in dropped D.
I am mesmerized by that gorgeous PRS guitar😍😍😍
Blackwater Park's entire intro riffing is my favourite drop D riff
It's so hard to stay focused when tuning down to D with heavy distortion already on. Every time I see someone do it you have to give them a minute to get the obligatory mute/power chord awesomeness out of their system.
I feel this exact way about 7 string guitars
I love drop d. It makes me a lot more experimental with my chord choices. Everlong opened up a whole can of worms for me and there are so many easy 7ths and 9ths to play when you don’t have to stretch as much for the root and fifth
I love that purpleheart sc245 private stock! Beautiful.
Queen had some cool drop D riffs, most well known one is fat bottom girls, though there are many like headlong, white man, the prophets song that are so good and heavy
Came here to say this. Drop D plus THAT tone is just magical.
Isn't Sad but True in D Standard?
yes
Thats awesome. Great job. My favorite is Laid to Rest
Beautiful flame top and of course, the option of Drop D” tuning opens many doors!
Lamb of God wrote like 70% of their entire discography in Drop D. Every riff is amazing
Milquetoast by helmet and outshined by soundgarden
Personally, my fav drop d riff is Summer shudder by AFI. Jade is such a good guitarist, and I love his work
All nightmare long is hands down my favourite drop D tuning song, it’s so good
Unholy confession by A7X for sure
The riff that everybody copies to this day
@@Glintingbeetle you can’t deny that it’s a good riff
@@ballsacksteve8360 Never denied it. I really like it and it was my fav riff (ever) for a long time. Many bands got „inspired“ by these pedal tone riffs and played them. It‘s commonly used in Metalcore (As I Lay Dying; August burns red) to this day
King's X has some amazing drop D/C stuff. Very melodic.
I very rarely comment on any video but one thing that caught my ear is he said dad but true is in drop c standard I have had many people over the years ask me how to play it and I learned it in d standard and that’s what most of my sources said I looked it up and searched over 30 different websites but all in all man I love you’re videos keep up the grind you inspire me to pick my guitar up when I watch you’re videos much love

Hell yeah. I was gonna say blackwater park.
What song is the opening riff from??
The War by Angels and Airwaves. So simple yet so catchy. First drop d riff I learned.
Couple of my favorites, in no particular order
-Ratt: "Lay It Down" and "Lack of Communication"
-Tool: "Lateralus" and "Forty Six & 2"
Ones I play in drop D even though they weren't originally:
-Kenny Wayne Shepherd: "Blue on Black"
-Blue Oyster Cult: "Godzilla"
