Tuning: Drop D
#DropD #Guitar #Riffs
*Drop D is still heavy, change my mind*
Also, I had no idea but AILD - Parallels is a weird D standard/drop D hybrid so my apologies for that one. Good thing I actually included 21 riffs so technically there are still 20 drop D riffs.
This is still a kick ass video! Love your content man! Also, I was going to point that out haha, you still played it well!
Ain't no changing your mind after watching this.. lol
Drop D is my favorite tuning followed by B and C.
Nik Nocturnal I’m surprised you didn’t do in regard to myself (intro) by Underoath
Anything can be heavy, you just have to play it right... lower tuning just tends to help (not changing minds, just reinforcing your argument)
Any tuning can be heavy. But not just anyone can be heavy.
Hippy Hobo true
Infant Annihilator is the perfect example, they play mostly in E standard..
@@nickvanesch1111 I thought it was drop a or b standard. It's almost the same thing anyways, just an extra thicc boi string. Winds Of Plague plays mostly in standard. I didn't know they even had a drop d riff until this video.
@@nickvanesch1111 Infant Annihilator play 8 strings and even when they did play 7 strings it was tuned to drop A with a low E for the 7th string in what world would you think they play E standard?
Sylosis is the perfect example of being heavy in high tunings on the side of Pantera
Loving the 0.2 seconds of Laid to Rest
Obviously fall out boy. They are the second heaviest band first being nickelback.
Sugar We're Going Down is the heaviest metal song on the planet.
No, the first heaviest band is Panic at the disco. XD
Y'all obviously never heard nothin about Matchbox Twenty. They heavy enough that I just about broke my back and had to quit my job!
Still not as heavy as rockabye baby
Blood on the dance floor is the real shit
after playing in Drop C, Drop B, and Drop A mostly now, it’s so weird to play in Drop D it sounds so high compared to what i’m used to playing recently but i’ve definitely missed all my favorite riffs in it like Asking Alexandria, Trivium, A7X, shit like that.
My six string was broken for the longest time as the nut & bridge were ruined. Today I finally got back to fixing the problems & all I’ve played in months is drop F on my seven string. It feels weird but so so good
@@reneebear3641 lmao
yep sounds high when you've played in drop tunings like Drop B already
same
honestly, it’s worth it. i’ve been playing drop b, drop a, drop c#. Most fun to play is drop d now for me. Got me all creative in my head and put my hands to work like a madman. It just sounded so good, I’d melt.
First riff: Psycroptic
Me: I see you're a man of culture.
Good shit man keep it up
Thanks Diego! That riff is filthy
@@NikNocturnal i don't know if you've heard of them, but Ouroboros is another riff monster band, it would be sick if you did a video on their best riffs!!
@IDontKnowWhatToPutAsMyUsernam e Dude bands like Psycroptic, Ouroboros, Exmortus and Soreption are so unknown is fucking stupid, they have the grooviest riffs it's almost inhuman these days in metal
@@diegopineda2620 That's the problem most australian bands have haha. There's so much goodness coming from there, but its difficult to get the exposure
Seeing a band like psycroptic on this list made me happy, they're from my home town
46 and 2 over jambi as TOOL's heaviest riff. A bold decision.
46 and 2 is just too groovy to pass on it
it’s like picking between favourite children but Jambi has more balls imho
Honestly Intolerance is probably one of Jones’s heaviest riffs. Also Sweat, Part of Me, Cold and Ugly and the palm muted part in Undertow. Jambi is heavy though too don’t get me wrong
Yeah the breakdown in Jambi made my balls go back inside me and drop again
It was tough to choose

Detonation by Trivium, pretty heavy for E standard!
"What is dis? Child's play?"
No this is Patrick.
No this is a dead meme
No. This is Patrick
@Sid The sloth no mayonnaise is not an instrument
@Sid The sloth not horse radish either
@@budderutter yes it is theres mayonez guitars. c h e c k m a t e
That Rammstein riff... So simple yet so effective.
The first riff by Psycroptic 00:13...you can tell it was by figured out by ear, since John Haley doesn't use tapping...unless Nik already knew that and used tapping by choice, which still sounds cool
1:59 who else heard someone screaming OH MY GOD in their head?
ME
Yes
1:46
That blessthefall riff was my childhood!
I like what u did to the drum pattern on 46 & 2!
And also.....0...3..5.
@@CloudShys this is really good bro, did you write this?
Brooooooooooooooooooooo
Baby Private yes bro
@@CloudShys That's really good bro, can you play something else?

*TOOL has entered the chat*
Tool is not heavy lol
Tool is very heavy
@@alexwinn9901 yeah, some tools are heavy but the band is not
@@alexwinn9901 calling tool heavy is a slap in the face to the entire metal community. Cannibal Corpse is heavy. Chelsea grin is heavy. Tool is prog rock, sometimes it drags and is the complete opposite of heavy.
@@TheJohnnyboy445 I’m just trolling bro lol
There's a extremely heavy bit in avenged sevenfold exist. Around the 3 minute mark. Drop d
Absolutely love that riff
The Stage within itself is just on another planet. God, what a great album.
What an epic song. For that minute that the riff is playing it sounds like it slowly descends into chaos. I had to listen to it over and over
Dude picking the A7X one was SOOO hard for me to do...
I'm so glad you did the Agonist so freaking good yo
Yeah their riffs are insane!
When I first started playing in bands, I only.played drop c. As my playing improved, I moved to drop c# to drop d. D definitely has the most clarity for faster playing
Come on Nik. where's those Drop C# riffs?
Most underrated tuning IMO
I don't know what's up with drop C# and Drop C but power chords have a more powerful sound. For example, Disturbed's Prayer have such a powerful ambience that makes me shiver all over the place
@@vandersonjunior8018 I just think drop C# is a nice sounding tuning. It's got lots of clarity but can also be quite heavy, It's a good mix of the two. Lots of Disturbed songs are in Drop C#. So are a lot of Alter Bridge and Trivium songs
@@mar.c1 drop C# not drop C
Basically all of Norma Jean riffs
For a7x I feel like there were plenty of heavier riffs, at least of course, IMO. One that comes to mind is the riff that kicks in on The Stage after the tapping intro. Super good and definelty decently heavy.
Metallica - All Nightmare Long is also heavy. Yeah, it's in drop D
The Thing That Should Not Be too ^^
Demoboros Biggest of fax.
The Thing That Should Not Be is in D standard, not Drop D.
@@cloneboy42 it's Drop D
@@agustincasciero nah its def D standard
Primal
Concrete
Sledge
1st breakdown riff is heavy af
I think Pantera uses D standard not drop d though
@@gangweedpilled4977 you're correct but for that specific song they tuned to Drop D instead of D Standard
3:44 that makes me want to let my hair grow, cover my face with it, and wear those weird super loose jeans
^^^ yes
Three days grace will always be my all time favourite band
Happy to see two A7X riffs, they’re my favorite band🤘🏻
From the best guitarrist modern
the song that got me into metal , wcar to plant a seed, IS DROP D , would have never known thanks NIK
Thank YOU for watching!
@@NikNocturnal THANK you for shredding 💞
honorable mention: Walk with me in Hell - Lamb of God
It was really hard choosing the lamb of god one tbh
@@NikNocturnal still picked a good one though
Heavy and Drop D aren't normally associated with each other, but there are many heavy songs in drop D. Great video, man. Other ones I would have included would be Burning Bridges by Seventh Day Slumber, Testify by RATM, and Lonely House by Grammatrain.
Thanks! Great suggestions
Glad to see Psycroptic getting some love! Great Aussie band!
They're insane!
@@NikNocturnal Yeah man, had the pleasure of opening for them back in December, killer dudes!
Wow! Returning Empty-handed. Love that one.
Nice choice with Shattering The Skies Above!!
But PS. real tuning for Parallels is DGDFAD
Wow a lot of throwback songs in here. Havent heard half of these since middle school
Yeah it was really fun going through these actually
Because everyone has to down tune to Drop F these days. I can’t really listen to anything below A.
“Heaviest drop d riffs”
Laughs in Adam Jones
now do drop C# with some trivium and Lamb of god plz
And Memphis May Fire
And SOAD
Trivium be epic tho in standard A#
I think behemoth does some C# too
and Linkin park
*KiLlIng In The NAmE Of -RATM*
I really wanted to include it because it's just one of the best riffs ever made, but it wasn't necessarily one of the "heaviest" riffs is all
Communism is not metal
christian D could be, Stalin means man of steel
@@landhomer4627 nah its punk. Selling out is hella metal tho
These 'Heaviest Riffs' series are the best chances for me to discover a lot of great bands I didn't know
true af😂
For me the main riff from Black Rain by Soundgarden have a "killer knife" vibe!
Psycroptic 🤘🏻 Nice to see you put them in this list Nic
They slay!
Honestly one of the main reason I keep coming back to this channel is because Nik's guitar tone is always phenomenal
When some of these riffs came up i was like "That is in drop D?!?"
So happy you put Cross Off on here, such a great song.
Hell yeah! AA, TDWP, WCAR, LoG and BTF were my favorites 🙌🏻
never thought I'd see hollywood undead in a Nik Nocturnal video. brings back some memories lmao
can't wait for heaviest riffs: dadgad
*insert Old Gray riff here*
Crash or exploding riffs in bagdad tuning
see you later by william bonney outro
monumeeeeeeeeeents xd
Kashmir
I think if you include trivium it's no longer considered child's play. Also do heaviest D standard riffs! (All gojira😂)
Yeah, a list like that would be 90% Gojira songs and 10% songs by Symphony X (something off of, The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast or Underworld).
@@ThorsShadow I've never heard symphony x do D standard. (Granted I only listened to 5 songs by them)
@@zr00we64 The majority of their songs are in D standard. The only song I actually know being in E standard off the top of my head is The Edge of Forever. Lady of the Snow too, I think. Not sure though.
Death played in D standard, I think a lot of other early death metal bands did as well. Looking forward to that one hopefully, I like D standard
I feel like you have near no haters
Totally. I can’t tell if it’s because 1) people just learned to watch something else instead of clicking the thumbs down or 2) almost everyone agrees that this is good (which it is). Of course, both could be true. Haha
Aha oh no worries I for sure do, it's just a lot of them are more the silent type.
Nik Nocturnal those are the ones you have to worry about
Nik Nocturnal I hate you Nik....lol jk
His haters are mostly people who don’t like him because “core bad”
You should be able to do Standard E after this! There are some goddamn heavy riffs for standard E!
Will do that one eventually :)
Opeth baybee
Pantera
The breakdown from sea of sun's by Helix nebula
That songs is packed with so many awesome layers but it keeps good flow. Thanks for recommending it to me!
Much love for Stockholm syndrome from muse! I know it’s not quite as heavy as all of the metalcore riffs but truly spectacular in its own right.
Immediately reminded how dirty the riff in Sonne is. Crushes.
1:18 yes 🤘
First song I learnt in drop D was Blackwater Park by Opeth. Some damn heavy riffworks in their older music for sure!
Heaviest riff: Tuning Standard 7 strings
Nah drop a 7 string
Dark eternal night as entered the chat
That's probably the next set of tuning I'll have to go to in the series after I do Drop C#
Fear Factory
@@snow5772 He's already done that one.
I think that in regards to myself is heavier than returning empty handed.
• “Watch This” - Slash
• “She Builds Quick Machines” - Velvet Revolver
I wish you'd chosen the main riff from A7X God Hates Us. The one when M. Shadows is screaming "Total nightmare"
Some of my favorite drop D riffs are from Fothcrah and other Hungry Lights songs.
California dreaming and Cross off being right after each other? My day is much better now
Hey Nik, any chance you could do a vid showing how you made your backing tracks? Awesome stuff as always. Cheers.
Azza8808 yes please Nik
Thanks! I mainly just convert tabs to midi and record guitar over it
Nik Nocturnal may you make tutorial video for your upcoming content ?
I love these videos because they remind me of so many old throwbacks that I haven't heard in years. Lol
Lmao just played like half these songs in my drop D sesh lol
Loved Shattering the Skies Above, God Hates Us All, and Parallels.
Other 3DG riffs that sound really heavy are: Overrated, Bully, Happiness, etc
Love the pic bro!
I was like "if Psycroptic isn't on here, I swear". Then it was the first one. I'm satisfied
Ah drop D...
A simpler time
Aha yes
I never fucking expected to see Hollywood Undead on "Heaviest Drop D Riffs" but here it is and with a banger of a song
Can’t wait!!🖤🔥
The Agonist is so good. Prisoners is an amazing album. Glad to hear your cover of them :)
I love the way you enjoy playing, Like you really feel every step you take on the string
Thirds interval: _exists_
Core bands: _it's free real estate_
Muse, A7X, Tool
For Trivium, the entire Ascendancy album is in Drop D and I believe Shattering the Skies Above is in Drop C# like the rest of the In Waves album
Like Light to Flies by Trivium is Also Heavy! :D
This channel deserves a lot more views and subscribers
so heavy and I'm happy
@Nik Nocturnal. Do you do a full setup on that guitar when you switch tunings? Or do you just tune it and go for it?
He secretly has 20 of those guitars without us knowing.
No I believe he uses a digitech drop or something similar.
I just tune to it
@@NikNocturnal you block your trem ?
Jamel Banner I’m assuming he does. It doesn’t look like he even has the lock nut on.
Love this! I like playing a lot of these songs in D Standard because I feel it's a little heavier sounding but that's just me
Good choice for the Trivium riff! :D
Lamb of God riff got taken out?
I think its fair to say it depends on the riff not the tuning to determine if something is heavy or not
Surprised I didn’t see now you’ve got something to die for
I was low key expecting some old school polyphia with their drop D Djent
Is RUclips seriously copyright claiming some of these riffs? Jeez! Let the man play some riffs!
Goddammit, I miss my old Schecter Hellraiser.
Anyways, solid list
Asking Alexandria made me laugh my arse off that was unexpected LUL
Nik the master of guitar memes💎🌌⛼🌌💎
I was waiting for In Regards to Myself to show up but I shall accept Returning Empty Handed.
Ø
Underoath
I thought you would leave them out! Thank god😂 They're like the kings of Drop D
But can you do heaviest riffs in E standard
this is like testing the heaviest feather
any drop tuning BLESSTHEFALL hasn't played in? 😂
Isn't the lowest they've gone Drop A#?
Best guitar teacher on RUclips I swear
Where's primal concrete sledge¿
Always happy to see Trivium riffs
OMFG YES 🤘🏻😍🤘🏻
The best stuff!
I learnt all my riffing on Drop D. I still play a lot of my songs on it. #DropDIsTheOGExtendedRange
Great video, plus all the names you remembered that’s crazy!
Aha thanks Mark!
Wut
How
Is
This
Still
Heavy
The tuning doesn’t make a song heavy, the player does
Well yeah I know that
But I’ve been listening to a lot of djent bands so drop D sounds like a ukulele to me now
I like your synyster gates schecter guitar
Tool...hell yes! Great video man!! Also Rammstein "Sonne" is such a badass riff!! 🤘🏻🔥 Thanks for sharing!!
Thank YOU for watching!
@@NikNocturnal you're welcome! 😁🤘🏻🔥
I know I’m pretty late, but Helmet should have been in the list. THEY’RE THE KINGS OF DROP D
Yeah, many/most bands in this video were influenced by Helmet.
