Nice review! I have been owning "Land Cruiser Prado" since 2002, starting with 95 series, then 120, and now 150 since 2014. Over the past 18 years my LC Prados have been every year cruising on the trails of east-southern Morocco. They never let me down. Now 2020 is stuck in Europe with Covid lockdowns, but hey waiting for 2021 to return on desert trails. Thanks for your channel.
I have a 2022 version if this. As long as you have it in neutral you can engage then lockers and or low range with out having to disengage the traction control first. In fact once you put it into 4L it automatically disengages traction control, and the parking sensors. It is a great car, I am so far extremely pleased with mine. It also very good in snow.
We are picking up our 2022 GXL Prado soon. I've discovered your channel and love watching your vids. We've upgraded from an '06 Prado, so the new one will take some getting used to with all the gadgets. For us oldies, this is probably the most daunting of purchasing a newer vehicle. Thank you for explaining how to put the gears in etc. I notice the new Prado has different gears in the automatic...the S (sports) gear looks like it operates like a manual without the clutch (the Sports gear). Keep up the vids 😊
Took my old man's 2012 Prado to Waroora station a couple of years ago. I didn't fully understand the whole "only 4wd when centre diff locked" back then, so left it unlocked. A week of sand driving in very hot weather, didn't get bogged once, and that's in AWD, NOT 4WD. Actively had to try to bog myself. Great off-road capabilities!
I've got the 2017 Kakadu. The MTS and Crawl Control features are insanely good. I've even used the air suspension to help level my trailer and make it easier to unhook.
Great review vid. I own a modified 2018 and it absolutely delivers on and off road, and that was why I chose to purchased a Prado and will purchase another. Its just the best ALL ROUNDER available. I think you will find also, that the new Prados can engage 4lo without the centre diff lock.
Bought one 2 days ago Ronny, as jamming my 3 sons in the back of a D40 for long trips wasn't very popular anymore! Good to see it can hold its own in the sand
You can only engage the rear locker when it’s in 4 low so that rear locker wasn’t even engaged. That’s why the light was flashing. Also hold the traction control button down for a few seconds to disengage it for sand driving. These cars are awesome
I've had a 2019 version GXL for 12 months now, pretty much in the same option spec as this test model. Aside from a bull bar and recovery points fitted. Firstly, they're a fantastic car. We looked at LC200, but for another $50k we'd only just be getting the spec level we got with Prado GXL. Cops a bit of flak from LC owners for not being a real cruiser (or maybe its those who wish they had a LC, but don't have either car, who knows?) It's just a bunch of chest beating in any case, the car holds is own where it counts. As this review showed Prado's are a more than capable off road car with some luxury comforts to go with it. Totally agree on your tyre opinion Ronny, ours will wear AT's too once the dunlops wear out. But like you said they do the job, others will just do it better that's all. Just for clarity for anyone reading these comments before the brochure, the GXL middle row seats have their own climate controls, however the seats are heated only, you need to go to VX or Kakadu for heat/cooling seats in the middle row (and along with some other additional tech, pay a ludicrous premium for the priviledge). Saying all that, in summer the cooled front seats are a bloody godsend! My two cents on the GXL spec is this, the VX and Kakadu drive EXACTLY the same as the GXL (we tested a Kakadu before deciding on a specced up GXL). We could not justify the price premium for what we thought was non-essential tech (a tiny fridge in the centre console for eg, when the GXL has a vent from the COLD AC plumbed into its bin, plus we have a Waeco anyway) The extra accoutrements in VX and Kakadu don't change the way the car performs, nor have we missed them in the last 12 months of GXL ownership. I mean, we bought a new camper with the money we saved not buying a VX or Kakadu. On top of this, the Kakadu felt a little cheap and tacky with its "wood" (read: Plastic) trims when we drove it, the piano black plastics in the GXL look way better.
There's a few more extras than just the fridge in the centre console. You also get a sunroof, memory function seats, height-adjustable air suspension, rear entertainment system with remote, automatic folding 3rd row seats, terrain-selector mode, front camera, side cameras and 360 view, blind spot monitoring system, JBL premium 14-speaker system, cross-traffic monitoring system when reversing, auto-levelling rear suspension when loading, Toyota's KDSS, hill climb/descend assist, etc. Not sure if all of it is worth if, but over here you do get around £12k worth of extra for only an extra £6k
@@SZDPSantos I'm glad you listed them all, because I couldn't be bothered, nor could I be bothered fitting them to my car. Whilst some of the listed features are smart in function, frankly the "safety" features made me concerned for the basic competence of the end user to drive a vehicle. Only to achieve a more expensive, heavier Prado after adding it to the car. In 4WD terms in Australia a Kakadu or VX Prado is like buying an E class Benz and then buying an AMG pack to add the nice wheels, an AMG badge, fancy trims and body kits for an extortionate premium, only to short change yourself the real reason for the AMG badge in the first place, being the stonking engines they produce. The GXL is a very comfortable and offroad tech laden bit of kit anyway. So all of that electronic aid stuff just felt unnecessary and very expensive when we sat at the dealers desk to decide which model and options we'd buy.
@@Wazzaozzyskier definitely more expensive and, in some cases, unnecessary. But like I said, over here BMW and Mercedes would've charged at least £15-20k in some of their models (at least that's close to what they charged for my S Class) whereas Toyota "only" asked for around £6k. It's similar to the new BMW Z4/Toyota Supra. Both manufactured by BMW, literally the same car. One is a hard top, the other is a soft top. Both basic models are around £47k for the Z4 and the Supra, while the the top spec Supra costs £53k and the top spec Z4 costs around £64k. Same car. You're just paying for their name. But like I said before, although it does cost more for the extras in the VX, you're not paying through the roof like you do with the AMG pack or the M Pack in BMWs. When you compare it like that to the BMWs and Mercedes, it's definitely worth the money. But it all depends on the buyer, if they really need all that stuff though
Funny I just put out a fan ride video tonight and there were 16 rigs; most of them fairly built. A stock Lexus (fancy Landcruiser) went everywhere all the other rigs went and even missed the bypass 4 other rigs took and still made it through! Lost a wheel cap, but that was it. Definitely respect Toyota’s. Great review Ronny! ❤️🐞 Tire pressure is the cheapest mod someone can do! We went up to the mountains tonight and got into about 14 inches of snow. Had to go down a pretty decent grade for about 500 yards before it was safe to turn around. Got a little nervous but dropped the tires to 10 psi and climbed right up it.
A TRUE review by a REAL 4x4 EXPERT! This is how a review should be... Interior the last... Others show interior first and then talk about USB ports when it got ton of 4x4 features. Ronny, I heard if you press and hold ATRAC button for 8 seconds it will deactivate the rev limiter. Yes, rear locker works with 4 Low Range.
The v6 prado is fun and very potent on the dunes in the Middle East... comfort and capable... the prado 150 makes sense and is very reliable. Handle likes a dream

Gday Ronny , great review, we have a 2017 Prado , couldn't be happier , my wife and I are always on road trips , we will probably up grade next year to another new one , they're also good for long hauls especially when you need to overtake , cheers
I had a year 2000 GXL for 20 years and upgraded to the Hilux. I was however drooling over this model, but I couldn't quite justify the price tag. They are an amazing vehicle.... The Luxxy though did it for practicality and cost this time around. Though if you have a family and the coin to spend, I'd go a Prado anytime. They're just great. As a side note, the old Prado is still going strong and now owned by a colleague of mine who's upgraded a few parts that were getting old and it's again running like a dream with 270k on the clock. They just make them to last.
I have a 2001 Grande and I love it. It gets me everywhere I want to go and more importantly back again! We're looking to upgrade in the near future and we've been tossing up between the Hilux and a new Prado.
I wish we got this in the US, I like this one so much more than the Lexus version we get. The front end styling is much cleaner, the interior looks better, and the diesel engine would be fantastic.
Many thanks for doing this test drive for us, it has answered just how good it is by a guy who tells it like like it is rather then being too diplomatic 😳 Anyway, thanks again.
Yeh but unlike the 70 series you actually get an interior. And coils. To get the 70 as comfortable as a prado you'd have a spend almost half the price of the vehicle again.
Btw Those pre 1996 (70 series) prados are a beautiful thing. They’re an Auto 3.0 ltr diesel with live coiled axles front and back! Some came with rear diff lock from factory too!
Ronny, I came across a discussion on the Aulro forum which discussed your review of the new Defender. They absolutely hammered you, due to your lack of preparedness which resulted in you being unable to set the All Terrain Control system (Or whatever it's called). FYI, I own a 70 series, will likely own a Patrol next and would consider a Land Rover (If it wasn't for the fact they're unreliable), so I respect all makes as long as the vehicle is FIT FOR PURPOSE -
I definitely wanna see you review and test the Y62, i would love to hear your thoughts on it, would be fantastic. Keep up the good work, love the vidz, hope you're keeping safe through everything this year :)
@@commonsense-grs Which is pretty much what i figure, but it's worth a shot, considering how impressive the Y62 actually is, i think it'd be good to get his opinion on it, as he's a Toyota man. Even if it is a very little chance haha
I had a 2014 3ltr fully done up for long range touring with anything and everything on it. It was a good bus off road but didn’t like towing the family trailer around. Don’t know how people would buy one to tow the larger vans around as the trans doesn’t like it. Great review and I concur 100% with what you say for a stock 4x4 with no mods it’s a great bus for the family.
I have a 120 series from 08 with a 6 speed manual with some custom work and it has over 400k on the clock. I have taken it through some of the worst tracks in the Vic High Country over the years and it has always come out the other end. Yes they're not for putting a 4 inch lift with 36 inch swampers on it. They are a very well balanced vehicle and have a much lower centre of gravity than any of the big raised LC's and Patrols. Apart from silly deep mud, it's gone more place's than ever expected and with relative ease. 2 inch lift and A/T's.
I just subscribed to your channel. Good review mate. Looked at one of these today at the dealership. You just convinced me to buy it. Sale guy is ringing me tomorrow to follow up. If he lowers the price by another $2000 it is sold.
Only on in 4L? Are you sure? I’ll try in my Hilux and use it 4H. They flash until they engage and require you to move forward or back sometimes happens in my 79 and Hilux. But I’ll try and see what happens
@@Ronny_Dahl the off road manual says that the rear diff lock automatically disengages when you shift from 4L to 4H. I guess this is a safety precaution so you don't jump on the highway and forget to unlock the rear diff
Also, you can't have the rear diff locked and traction control on at same time. That's why it turns traction control off in 4L and allows the rear diff to be locked
Ey Ronny, consider reviewing the LC 200 and the fortuner. and like that guy said, you should put a list of specs at the start of the review telling engine an output, transmission, drivetrain etc but otherwise great job
Seems very similar to the 4Runner in the states. Everyone over here that owns one loves it. I have one and I love it. Great all around vehicle and is bullet proof.
Tony S yea man, pay a bit of a premium for the legendary reliability. Totally worth it. I freakin love it. Has the pro wheels on it to. I’ve had it off road and it’s a completely different machine.
Another great vid Ronny, but you missed quite a few points. You only drove it in sand, how about some rocks and mud? How is the underbody protection? Approach and departure angles.... And a comparison with the fortuner would be nice to help potential buyers decide whether they need to spend the extra cash on this or would the F be good enough.
Great review, currently considering replacing my Gen 4 Pajero to a 150 series. I’ll definitely miss the simplicity and bulletproof engine of the Pajero especially deep in the African bush but the lack of comfort/new features and the inability to fold a single rear seat instead of a double has steered me to the Prado as replacement. Great content dude 👍 🇿🇦
I’m jealous Ronny, you guys get the proper off-road models Toyota makes. As far as the landcruiser Prado here in the USA, we get the Lexus GX460, no rear locker just a center diff lock and terrible approach angle although departure might be the same as the Prado as they are identical. I would love to see you review a 200 series landcruiser out in the bush just like your regular content.
Great review as always I recently brought a 2012 prado altitude which was all Ready well equipped with extra goodies. Planning on cape York next year. Nice up grade from an 09 ranger.👌
@@Ronny_Dahl Ronny, Great review of the 2020 model! If your interested in doing a comparison to a 2018 VX prado we would be happy to loan you the car ? Has ECU reflash and a bit of other gear fitted on to add weight(bullbar, roof racks, tyre change etc, typical add ons that many people do after buying). I think it would outperform the 2020 model on the sand but interested in your view.
My 96 prado even has ac for rear passengers however the rear folding seats take 3 more passengers and loads of room for adults. Really pleased with it, superb car on and off road
Great project Shauno. This could be the best all time off road vehicle try a touring and a crawler version combined. Please do a Solid Axle Swap and 40 spline axles. Put Portals, there are other brands besides Marks4wd like Crawlking/axletech (US) or the Brazilian Eixos Portal from DStrac. Change the chain driven transfer case to the Gear driven 40 spline from Trailworthy (us). If you double the transfer case you can use the 2nd as a PTO and drive a mechanical winch instead of the electric winches you all are using. You can find a 20,000Lbs mechanical winch at Tulsa Winch/Paccar/Braden. And since you have 40 spline axles you can go for 20" aluminum beadlock wheels at DBLdesign in Dallas Texas with 10 studs and 335/80 R20 42" tires. Keep your engine and transmission. Whatever you end up doing keep the awesome work. Say hi to Graham, Jocko and the rest of your crew.
These cars are the strongest and most reliable out there. 120 Series still around and hihg prices at second hand market. Bit too big for my needs. So I used a suv, Rav4 1999, gor my needs, perfect.
Hi Ronny, We have a 150 GX prado and I have a question about suspension. We do some off reading but this is generally to get from point A to B, we are not going out and trying to test the limits. We are getting ready to do a lap of Oz. We are towing a camper trailer and we are planning on doing roads that have significant corrugations, as well as any off roading to see things along the way. Recently we have looked at the OME BT56 with air bags. My concern is, with my limited knowledge, is that this may be overkill and money wasted and I might not have had to spend money on suspension at all. We do have some sag in the back of the car when our trailer is on. Thanks for your time. Love your content. Mark
I have a 120/GX470 as my daily driver. We use it for family camping trips, and other such things. My upgrades have been installing an ARB dual compressor, changing my tires over to Cooper AT/3 265/70/17, Metaltech sliders, ditch lights, ARB 2500 awning & room, Redarc BCDC, and 12k winch. Soon will be adding some bash plates, maybe a bull bar (don't want to add too much weight), 270 amp alternator, and snorkel (for dust and sand). I waited to find a KDSS equipped vehicle, and am very happy that I did. It's way nicer on road, better articulation off. I don't really need any lift so KDSS is perfect. We see an average of 16-18mpg, 13.83L/100km combined. Not too bad for a fairly loaded 4.7 V8. It's definitely a great Family 4wd, it's an amazing little adventure rig.
We also have a GX 470 as our daily driver. I have the same Cooper tires as well. Since I go into work before the snow plows are out, I am always amazed at how the GX handles deep snow conditions. No wonder they hold their value and are often prized vehicles!
Hi Ronny, love your content👍 a quick edit about "How to engage 4x4" part; It's possible to engage Low range without engaging Center Diff Lock. This may come handy, when you need low range on a hard surface. You can also disengage the already locked center diff, when in 4LO, if you need to make a tight turn. IMO this option is a plus, compared to conventional 2H-4H-4L 4wds.

I have a 2001 Grande and I love it. It gets me everywhere I want to go and more importantly back again! We're looking to upgrade in the near future and we've been tossing up between the Hilux and a new Prado.
test drove this model today on road & highway.. excellent.. don't need leather seats... this is our caravan towing vehicle on order 👍
Great content Ronny and really well presented. Quality camera work.
I wish we got this in the US, I like this one so much more than the Lexus version we get. The front end styling is much cleaner, the interior looks better, and the diesel engine would be fantastic.
I love this car. will buy a brand new kakadu next year,. Thank you for the review mate.
Many thanks for doing this test drive for us, it has answered just how good it is by a guy who tells it like like it is rather then being too diplomatic 😳
Anyway, thanks again.
Love these reviews. Breath of fresh air.
Thx heaps for the review, just brought one 😀
Our Prados in UAE comes with a V6 petrol.
Love it
Your best review yet. To the point .
The Prado is the 4x4 that is incredibly underestimated and incredibly good.
Its price tag doesnt agree
@@chrishuang7932 You get what you pay for, only those who can't afford them whinge about the price.
@@chrishuang7932 in germany its as expensive as the 70 series....in some lines even more
Yeh but unlike the 70 series you actually get an interior. And coils. To get the 70 as comfortable as a prado you'd have a spend almost half the price of the vehicle again.
@@whyzed250 that may be but it rather take "ol reliable" than a prado(wich i would still take more than any other car)
Nice one Ronny, I'm biased but the Prado is an amazing vehicle, Mine will go anywhere I take it including Goat road 🤙🏻
Same mate, they are a very capable vehicle
Just not up that bog hole ey Martin 🤪😂
@@4x4CampingandAdventures might have gone around that but other than that, anywhere! 😉
Again, another great review!
Best reviews always come from Ronny
Great work mate and another great review
Btw Those pre 1996 (70 series) prados are a beautiful thing. They’re an Auto 3.0 ltr diesel with live coiled axles front and back! Some came with rear diff lock from factory too!
The Prado has a true 4wd system which is pretty rare these days. Most newer vehicles have part-time 4wd systems that don't use a center diff.
Ronny, I came across a discussion on the Aulro forum which discussed your review of the new Defender. They absolutely hammered you, due to your lack of preparedness which resulted in you being unable to set the All Terrain Control system (Or whatever it's called). FYI, I own a 70 series, will likely own a Patrol next and would consider a Land Rover (If it wasn't for the fact they're unreliable), so I respect all makes as long as the vehicle is FIT FOR PURPOSE -
Not surprised about the forum hammering that’s what those forum guys do 🤣🤣
I definitely wanna see you review and test the Y62, i would love to hear your thoughts on it, would be fantastic. Keep up the good work, love the vidz, hope you're keeping safe through everything this year :)
If it's not a Toyota it will not get a look in.
@@commonsense-grs Which is pretty much what i figure, but it's worth a shot, considering how impressive the Y62 actually is, i think it'd be good to get his opinion on it, as he's a Toyota man. Even if it is a very little chance haha
@@dmoorf you never know, the Y62 has opened my eyes that you really don't need a big diesel to have a great 4Wd.
Would consider... did consider... loving it!!
Appreciate the video, just purchased a GXL with leather! Figuring for 71K it makes a great family vehicle for hopefully the next 10 years
Part 2 - Stock Prado in mud and ruts. Part 3. - Essential basic kit and upgrades 😁
Yes yes yes 🙌
Yes please!
Yes this needs to happen then a givaway
I have a 120 series from 08 with a 6 speed manual with some custom work and it has over 400k on the clock. I have taken it through some of the worst tracks in the Vic High Country over the years and it has always come out the other end. Yes they're not for putting a 4 inch lift with 36 inch swampers on it. They are a very well balanced vehicle and have a much lower centre of gravity than any of the big raised LC's and Patrols. Apart from silly deep mud, it's gone more place's than ever expected and with relative ease. 2 inch lift and A/T's.
Greattt maan..... Super ..... A fan from india... But now in australia.. 😂... Keep watching..... ❤
I just subscribed to your channel. Good review mate. Looked at one of these today at the dealership. You just convinced me to buy it. Sale guy is ringing me tomorrow to follow up. If he lowers the price by another $2000 it is sold.
Would love to see the 2020 D-Max get the Ronny treatment!
Great review Ronny.
I like the updated Prado I certainly would consider one.
Would love a review on the new Isuzu D-Max!
You and me both!
Cheers Ronny, I was waiting for this video since you told me about it at the 4WD show the other day. Love my Prado 150 in the sand.
As always awesome review Ronny! I would consider one yes...Keep up the great vids 👍
Great review Ronny
I would absolutely love one
Rear diff lock only works in 4l Ronny, that's why the light was flashing on the dash. Great car and I agree that they are great on the Sand
@@Ronny_Dahl My 2017 Fortuner Rear and 2018 Prado center dif only worked in 4Lo.
Same with my 04 GX470 (LC120) now that I am stateside.
But it is pretty dang sweet that the new Prados have both a center and rear locking dif.
Gallaria Toyota's sales are headed for the roof! Good on them, thanks for the great & realistic review!
Could you do a review on the 200 series landcruiser and give your thoughts on it than compare it to the prado?
I’ll see if I can get one
@@Ronny_Dahl - and maybe the RAV4 and Yaris Cross. :)
I was hoping for that 200/150 comparison too- good call!!
@@Ronny_Dahl try a fortuner especially as it’s meant to be the wagon version of the hilux. Compare the two.
@@Ronny_Dahl yeah thanks man, also could you really try the fortuner?
The Prado’s USA siblings the 4Runner and GX460 are all over the place. Ancient platform that still works very well for families and adventurers.
Ey Ronny, consider reviewing the LC 200 and the fortuner. and like that guy said, you should put a list of specs at the start of the review telling engine an output, transmission, drivetrain etc but otherwise great job
I have a 2008 120 GXL it does everything so well on and off road. Reliable transport, love the stock 180 fuel capacity.
Seems very similar to the 4Runner in the states. Everyone over here that owns one loves it. I have one and I love it. Great all around vehicle and is bullet proof.
4 runner is diesel? 150L fuel tanks?
Tony S na, 4.0L gas and like a 20 gallon tank. Can’t get the diesel here in US only petrol.
@@brianjarlenski7422 that's good less issues with gas and the 4.0 is a awesome motor.
Tony S yea man, pay a bit of a premium for the legendary reliability. Totally worth it. I freakin love it. Has the pro wheels on it to. I’ve had it off road and it’s a completely different machine.
Hello Ronny - No rear diff lock on 4 HIGH. It only works on 4 LOW and will automatically disengage if you go faster than 5 KPH.
I obviously need to be a bit careful with these vehicles but totally agree. I only get these for one day so it’s a lot to cram in.
Just bought one. Thanks for the review! 👍🏻
6 months later, I drove one the dealer didn’t bother trying to sell it to me they have none and are expecting a 6-12 month restock.
If you want to go and come back take the Land Cruiser.
I certainly would go for the Pardo. Thanks Ronny for this video.
great vid and no bull, subscribed thanks mate
as a fj owner I would consider this as my next car
love the reviews mate, keeps the channel fresh with new content
Hey mate! Hope you could do a review for the 2021 All New MUX LS-T 4x4. Will be waiting for that vlog. Thanks mate. Stay safe
Love my Prado (2017 GXL)
Great review, currently considering replacing my Gen 4 Pajero to a 150 series. I’ll definitely miss the simplicity and bulletproof engine of the Pajero especially deep in the African bush but the lack of comfort/new features and the inability to fold a single rear seat instead of a double has steered me to the Prado as replacement. Great content dude 👍 🇿🇦
Get the v6. It'll be more reliable than pajero
Thanks for the review, yes I would consider one, they are a great car.
Great review as always
I recently brought a 2012 prado altitude which was all Ready well equipped with extra goodies.
Planning on cape York next year.
Nice up grade from an 09 ranger.👌
Great review Ronny.
Let's see if Izuzu can give you a new D-max to review.
Give Ronny the D-max Izuzu!
Or the Mux
I’ll do it 💯 both of them
@@Ronny_Dahl Ronny, Great review of the 2020 model!
How many kilometers you at mate?
would be great to see you review the new D-Max, if you can get your hands on one.. Great vid as always..
Never been a fan of these because everyone has one... but after watching this review, kinda want one too 😀
What kind of mentality is that? Many have them because they're good.
Perfect review
These cars are the strongest and most reliable out there. 120 Series still around and hihg prices at second hand market. Bit too big for my needs. So I used a suv, Rav4 1999, gor my needs, perfect.
I’d love to see a review on the new Jimny. Would be great with your in-depth reviews mate
Hi Ronny,
We have a 150 GX prado and I have a question about suspension.
Mark
Please do a review of the Kakadu
Got me a prado from new but goodbye no.3 cylinder at 141000km..oh what a feeling!
Hi Ronny, love your content👍 a quick edit about "How to engage 4x4" part;
It's possible to engage Low range without engaging Center Diff Lock.
This may come handy, when you need low range on a hard surface.
You can also disengage the already locked center diff, when in 4LO, if you need to make a tight turn.
IMO this option is a plus, compared to conventional 2H-4H-4L 4wds.
