- Hello soap making friends! If you are like me and you make a lot of cold process soap, then you will definitely have a collection of old soap bars and offcuts that you can use to make your own laundry soap. All you need is equal amounts of grated soap (it doesn't have to be homemade) and washing soda (sodium carbonate) - blend the two together in a food processor and you have your own DIY laundry powder!
My household has been using this product for clothes washing for years now, and it works very well. We use it in our front loader but other family members use it in top-loading machines and they love it too.

Do you sell any of your soaps
I loved hearing your sweet voice get so frustrated with the food processor! That was so adorable!! We're all human. And I'm glad you didn't cut that part out. I love your videos! You're a great teacher. Thank you for sharing your information with us.🙏
💗 from California!
Oh thank you so much, that's so nice for me to hear :)
I made this! It is a great way to use up my 'mistake' soap or my rebatches that still didn't turn out right. It cleans our laundry brilliantly. I just like it plain , unscented. Love the smell of plain soapy clothes. Thank you for sharing this tutorial and recipe.
Thanks Joanna, it's great isn't it! I just uploaded a recipe for the laundry soap, often I add that with my offcuts and old soaps to make the laundry powder with ruclips.net/video/GU81ycnFgEU/видео.html
One of my cp soap didn’t solidify even after 10 days… can I use that to convert into laundry soap?
You can mix your essential oil into the washing soda first and mix well. Then add your soap already fine blended together into a bowl and mix well. Should work good that way.
That's a great idea!
I like the way you picked up the soap from under the grater. I shall try the trick when I grate the cheese for pizza
Yes that's a good trick :)
For a less expensive way to purchase washing soda, check out the place where you purchase swimming pool supplies. You can also find sodium bicarbonate too. At least here in Canada, that’s what’s used to balance pH in pools.
Thank you. That is the simplest and easiest recipe I've seen for home made washing powder. I'm certainly going to try it.
Thank you, you're welcome!
I was trying to grate some coconut soap bars, and yes, they are very hard! So… I put an attachment on my food processor, the one that shreds vegetables (like carrots), and it shredded the coconut soap bars in a couple minutes! Thank you for another great tutorial. I will be doing some laundry tomorrow.
Thanks Terry, that's a great tip!
LOL! You cracked me up when you got frustrated with your food processer. You are funny. You have the sweetest voice and you do an amazing job with all of your videos. I guess that we could do this with our re-batch soap too. I hadn't really thought about it until you shredded it up. Thank you from Alabama.
Thanks, oh yeah that was funny (not, lol). Yes you could definitely do this with your rebatch soap, but make sure the superfat isn't too high. You don't want unsaponified oils in your washing machine.
Thank you, Elly. I have only discovered you in the last couple of days but have already learned so much about soap making and all its variants.
Thank you Lyn, that's wonderful. Welcome!
me too
Really superb. I was thinking for quite long time to use up the shredded soaps. Il definitely gonna try this. Thank you. Your just wonderful teacher.
Thoroughly enjoyed that! Guess I'm going to have to keep an eye out on a second hand food processor just for laundry soap!
How exciting! Thank you so much x
I started making laundry detergent a few weeks ago - just like your video - and love it! I've made batches for 2 of my daughters & they are thrilled. Thanks for sharing!
That's so great Maggie, thank you. You're welcome! I make it for my mum too :)
Hello Elly , i made this few days ago , i made the coconut oil soap first using 0 superfat and then added the washing soda and then put it through tbe food processor .
It came out lovely , a white fine powder without any scent and washed the clothes really well .
My family were very impressed !
Thank you for sharing :)
Wow, that's great! Glad you liked it and made it. I need to make some more myself!!
Hello, thanks for the tip, I also pass my old oils to make soap for laundry that don't keep very long on the shelf like sunflower and canola :) Merci de partager tes passions tu expliques très bien ❤
That was fun! I’ll definitely keep saving my soap bits and make some of this when the time is right. Thanks, Elly! You’re the best! 🥰🤩
Thanks Jill! I need to make another batch soon :)
you all prolly dont care but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
@Ivan Finnley instablaster =)
I just made it for the first time, and it turned out great. Can‘t wait to try it…
This worked out AMAZING!
I tested it serveral times now, and I´m totally amazed!
It doesn´t matter if super dirty workshop working trousers of my love, my own fitness dancing or gardening outfits, fatty kitchen towels or period pants... no matter if colourful, or white...
I need soooo few of it, only 2 table spoons of it for a whole load (of a european 6 kg ) front loader) the laundry is super clean and has an amazing scent of lemongras, orange and peppermint like my origin cleaning soap (whit´ch I consided too good for "just cleaning" ) without further perfuming! Really truly sustainable!
I had decided not to make my own laundry soap until I found out it’s one tenth the price of store bought!! 😊😊😊 yes, please!
I love this laundry soap recipe. I make the liquid laundry soap which can be a bit cumbersome with the baking soda, washing baking soda, borax, gallons of hot water, etc. So, I am excited to try this, so easy...thank you, Elly!!🥰💖💖
You're welcome Celeste, thank you! Yes it is so easy, I still love it after many years. You might like my video on how I make my laundry soap bars too ruclips.net/video/GU81ycnFgEU/видео.html
Thank you Ellie for sharing this. I’ve been wanting to make my own laundry soap powder for a long time, but I kept finding articles saying not to use soap because it causes scum so I kept stiring away from it. So it was good that you’ve used that powder for 5 years in a he front loader without issues. Can’t wait to try
You're welcome, it works well for sure :)
I’ve been using DIY laundry soap (I don’t make the soap, I buy a laundry soap bar , grate and add washing soda) as well and wow people get annoyed (online) and tell me that it doesn’t work. I get lectured about soap vs detergent. Anyways, have been using for years and never experienced the ill effects that some sites/ people say “might” happen. Wanting an eco friendly, cruelty free product and clean clothes...I’m quite satisfied with the diy.
I’d say try it for yourself and see what you think.
Hi Elly! Started making a coconut/olive soap just for laundry as I love it and so does my daughter-in-law. My clothes are really soft once they've dried and it's saving me a fortune!!! Huge thanks
Trish 👍
Ps I've found the "Cup of Coffee" link so I'll be on that once Rocky Horror Show pay me!!! 🙄🤣🤣🤣
That's so good Trish! Love that laundry soap. Thank you, I appreciate any support you can give! (especially your great comments! :)
I've got 4 pounds of soap scraps😄😄 .. I did this the other day and was going to video i t and it got my clothes so clean..
That's so good! It's a great use for the scraps.
Nice to watch Elly. I got the same Food Processor. Never made soap but you reminded sights of childhood when neighbors used to boil leftover soaps and soak clothes before beating the dirt out with a wooden bat like object called “Thaapi”
Thank you. I consider myself lucky to have a washing machine!
If you spread your soap gratings out to drie out, it blends down to a finer product. It even doesn't stick that mutch to the blades aswel.
Hi Elly. I didn't have any soap because I'm just starting out, so, I just bought some white cheap commercial soap .I grated all that and followed your instructions..... did get part of a knuckle in the process of a grating lol .
I used it today and my sheets were still in one piece after the wash so here to my fingers crossed.
Thank you for looking forward to my next batch.
I used an old magic bullet and the fines cheese grate worked good. I made 100gm so 200gmwith the soda, plus i added one block or preen soap and divided between the 8 batches i made
LOve your easy to follow instructions. Have a great day
Thanks for your comment Lesley! Sounds like you did a great job with what you have available to you. I'm glad it worked out for you, I've been using my home made laundry powder for many years now and I'm so happy with it. Thanks again :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you
What an excellent video!!! No nonsense tutorial ❤️
Thanks Piper!
Only just found you, thoroughly enjoyed watching and have subscribed, I’m finding it really informative to see how many different ways there are to make the detergent. Thank you👍😊
Thank you Peg, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
Great, yet simple recipe. Thank you so much for your money saving videos!
Thanks again. Yep enjoyed it. I use to make soap but it was a liquid years ago. Very into your vlogs. Learning heaps
Thank you :)
I ordered sodium carbonate right after i watched this Elly! Have 100%coconut soap bars now to make laundry soap. I think i will just use a bit of fabric conditioner when rinsing to give my laundry fragrance :) so excited to try this!
Use 30 drops of essential oil
Ooh exciting! That's great, have fun.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking elly does this form suds? I tried it and it wasnt bubbly :p
Thanx Elly and great video.. Also I use scraps for my dish washer.. So clean and natural, but I put it in a little bag and put it in the top rack.
Whoa! I like the sound of that. Haven't tried that yet...
For getting the soap into the bucket, instead of using the spatula, you can also lift up the cutting board and drag the grater with the soap in it, off the board and into the bucket :) I do that with cheese xP One less tool :P :)
Fantastic Elly I will follow your directions makes it look so simple.
I was laughing my head off with your processor not behaving itself I often have that problem even here in Tas. Why do tops like to get stuck.......x
Very good idea. Excellent. Appreciate it. I am inspired.
Thank you :)
Thank you! I'm well versed in making bar soap but wasn't sure how to use it for laundry.
Awesome video! Thanks so much. The last one I watched was 100% coconut HP soap grated pretty much an hour after being made...so it's still easy to grate. I did grate it up and was disappointed as it wouldn't dissolve in my top load HE washer. Now I know what to do. Must go get some washing soad and get it whizzed up now. Elly, you're wonderful!
Oh thank you Veta. Thanks for taking the time to provide such great feedback. I love this laundry soap - we've been using it with great success for years :)
the best way to grate your soap is to do it the ASMR soap style..
Washing Soda is Sodium Carbonate Na2CO3, whereas, baking soda is Sodium Bicarbonate NaHCO3.
Thank you :)
You can turn the bicarbonate into carbonate, put it in a stainless steel pot and heat it on your stove until it turns white and stops bubbling, be careful not to get burned and wait for it to cool before using it
You can also make washing soda by baking it in the oven to remove one of the water and carbon dioxide molecules. Heat the oven to 400F(200C), spread regular baking soda onto a baking sheet about 1/2" thick (12mm), and bake for 1 hour, stirring twice. Let cool and store in airtight container until ready to use.
**Caution: wear a mask or be very careful breathing while stirring or transferring to/from the container; washing soda (store bought or homemade). It's more caustic and lighter than baking soda and it's not hard to accidentally breathe in any airborne superfine dust particles. "Not hard" as in seriously easy. It took me two times making it before I figured out the cause of my painfully dry, slightly bloody nose.
@@7of9jml thank you
Thank you
Thank you so much for sawing us. I will try it out. Keep going. From PNG
Thanks!
Elly, I am so happy with this video.
I will try but first I have to make my first batch of beginner's soap and hopefully I will.
My have to wash my husband 's clothes twice with tons of Tide ( like triple). He changes his clothes twice but Bec of his strong prescribe medication, he basically sweats his meds. I tried everything and there is nothing out in market that works but the routines I have done above. I will try this for sure.
Thank you sooooo much.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it! I hope it works well for your husband's clothes. Try using some essential oil in the wash as well. Eucalyptus would be nice.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I will. Definitely will. OMG, you are so awesome and you have no idea how wonderful you made me feel. ☺️🌸🌻❤️

Lol life doesn’t all go as planned and yes it’s warm here in Savannah Georgia as well...looking forward to making this myself ...thank you again for all of you time and energy educating us...truly appreciated.
This is great. I’m going to give this a go. I make my own paste cleaner with grated soap scraps. Thankyou. X
You're welcome, that's great. Thanks!
I may be obssessed with your videos, and I've never even tried to make soap before! I would love to try it one day, but right now I'm a single Mom with a four and a half year old son, and I'm afraid of using the lye around him. Otherwise it looks like soooo much fun! :)
Thanks Jilly! You'll figure it out one day I'm sure.
Aloha! I'm a beginner also. I started learning from Elly's videos 2 years ago but had to step away from it for the last year and a half b/c I became my Grandma's solo live-in caretaker in another state and I didn't have all my supplies with me. I also started off marathoning Elly's videos to soak up as much as I could before I got started. I found her "How to Make Soap Using a Shaker Bottle + Honey Castile Soap Recipe (with a few surprises!)" video today and made a batch as soon as Gram went to bed. It didn't take long at all, and I'm thinking, as long as you prep your supplies in advance, you could knock out a small batch during nap time (or something similar). It's so satisfying to make your own soaps. Don't put it off for too long :D You'll really enjoy it 🙂
Will make that for my laundry from now on...Thanks Elly!!
That's cool Crystal, you're welcome!
We’re never to old to learn!
Hi Elly! I suffer from severe skin allergies and cannot use the majority of soaps out there due to being allergic to fragrance and coconut oil (which is in pretty much everything). I discovered your recipe on how to make olive oil soap and cannot wait to try this! My question regarding the laundry soap is, can I use olive oil soap flakes?
I subscribed to your channel and cannot wait to watch more of your videos :)
Thank you for all you do!
Thank you so much Brenda! That's a great question you ask. Olive oil soap made with a low or zero superfat should clean your clothes reasonably well, but it won't have quite the same power as a coconut oil soap would have. Do you have any access to sustainably sourced palm oil, lard or beef tallow? Those, mixed with olive oil, would make a more cleansing soap. You'd have to calculate a recipe for the new combination though. I hope that helps :)
I just did this, and grated my soap right into a bowl. My grater was over the plastic container.
I used my Magic Bullet Blender, and it came out 'fine'
Perfect!
Was wondering if i could use my bullet! Thanks for this comment
If you can get a rotary grater, it helps speed the grading up a lot.
I did enjoy that thank you you’re very talented.
Glad you enjoy! Thank you so much. :)
💛💛💛 definitely onto this Elly. Thanks heaps again for another great video. No need to reply....save your finger!
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! Yay Ozzie.
I love the bloopers!
Hello

Me , my family and neighbors
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure 😊
Great idea Elly. I was going to throw out the soap I did not like but I am going to give this a go. BTW I have a blender like yours and I love it but sometimes I fight with it as well. Love that you left that bit in your video.
Thanks Lia, oh yes I'd forgotten that part in the video. Life is a struggle sometimes ;)
I forgot to add, if I have lots of dark coloured soap, I do them in a separate batch for dark coloured clothes!
Nice, Elly, the soap I will do. You are fun. Stay safe
Thank you :)
Thank you for showing us how to do this!
I will try this out. Will use my manual rotating grater for the grating. I dislike grating anything lol.
Wow awesome I never knew they made those! It would be soooooo much easier!!!
@@GodsChild145 yes, the Presto salad shooter is best cuz its electric lol
Excellent! Definitely having a go at this. Fab video btw!
Thanks! Have fun with it :)
I really liked this video. I have made homemade laundry soap before. Your video makes it look easier. Thank you!
Thanks so much Tracy, glad you enjoyed it :)
Baking soda is made from washing soda that's been halfway neutralized with carbonic acid. If you bake baking soda in an oven, you can drive out the carbonic acid (it breaks down into carbon dioxide and steam) and turn the baking soda back into washing soda.
Excellent. Thanks for the great ideas. Mucho Gracias
thank you for this video. I'm using this recipe with success!
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m definitely going to try your recipe. ❤️
29 in your kitchen 😱🥵
It was 42 here the other day (Victoria) I’m gunna try this with coconut oil and a rotary grater!!

thank you Elly, your videos are supper helpful ,
You're welcome Grace, thank you :)
Tq so much Elly for sharing...
Love your version
This I’m going to try. Thanks!
I made laundry soap last night with a FO that smelled too much like detergent to use for body soap. 100% coconut oil, -2% SF, and several bars grated up easily today. I expect it will be harder to grate as time goes on, so I'm going to grate most of it today and mix it up with the other ingredients in smaller batches as needed. I'm sending a few bars to friends this week and I'm telling them to grate it ASAP.
Yes the coconut soap is very hard! Sounds like you did well with it. Your friends are lucky to have you :)
Amazing stuff!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you- as always
Thanks for the recipe and I love your accent 😊
Thanks Elly you are a truely genious.

Thanks this im making right now. Awesome.
What! A tbsp? That is awesome. I am gonna try it.
Thank you❤🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Too funny 🤣 Love the recipe . Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. The struggle is real!
Hello. You need to make sure that the lid and the bowl hit the lock properly. See here that you try to force the lid on outside the groove of the bowl, therefore you do not get the lid on. Then the bowl will leak as well. Good luck😁👍🏻
Thanks for that! I think I had stage fright. It never did that to me before!
Hi Elly
I watched all your videos over and over to make sure I knew what I was doing - then last month I made my first batch - today I made my 10th batch and tomorrow I make laundry soap based on this fab video - I’ve watched it five times !!! I have LOVED smelly soap my whole life and I have paid up to $8 per bar - imagine my relief to discover that “I “can do this - with great success I might add !! I just wanted to say “thank you “ for sharing your gift for soap making and for making such easy to follow and thorough videos- I am a perfectionist and appreciate all the details - next goal - sour dough starter !!!
Have a very blessed Christmas ❤️ ps my family says I have a “soap” problem !! LOL 😂
Wow Melanie, thank you! You sound just like me when I started haha! Good for you. Yes, you'll save yourself a lot of money, and give yourself a lot of joy too. Brilliant work, thanks for shaing. And you're very welcome! Merry christmas to you too x
This is amazing!!!
Very good one. Thanks for sharing the link
You're welcome :)
The only difference between washing soda and bicarbonate of soda is a H atom - to make washing soda from bicarb simply spread it on a baking sheet and cook it at about 150C - you will know when done when the granules are more powdery - Love your vids BTW, especially the sourdough bread
Thank you Clare, I think I did know that but forgot the details!
Awesome, thanks for sharing
I need this in my life!
:)

Thank you!
Thank you Elly. I have been using similar homemade laundry detergent for about a year now and it works well. The only different is the recipe I've got has baking soda in it. Yours is even better. I will definitely try yours. Do you also use your own homemade dish washer detergent? If so, would you mind sharing it? Thank you so much.
Hi there, thank you. No, I haven't ventured into homemade dishwasher powder yet, but may look into that! Thanks again.
You could try soapnut to wash dishes
My family is always thinking I'm going to prison them, but it gets the dishes so clean and I add a different ingredient for the dishes, but awesome video. Yeah they think I'm crazy!! I have to do it when they don't see me..My Starter went out and the mechanic came in and I could kick my self for not getting it on camera because his hands was covered in grease and with my soap scraps and a little rubbing and it came all the way off...
Ha that's so good. I believe you!!
Thank you
I apréciate a lot your tutorials
You're welcome
I really love your lovely voice elly❤
Thank you! :)
lol ''OMG - CUT '
[got to love it.]
I had no idea this was so easy, thanks so much for sharing. I have a few bars of coconut oil soap just hanging around, I’m gonna give this a go :) should be able to grate it up maybe 🤷🏻♂️ hopefully 😂
Thanks, Elly. I tried this thanks to your great instructions. I started with just a 75 g bar of my homemade soap ( your recipe!). One thing is that when I then used it in my front load washing machine, about 20% of the granules remained in the dispenser after the wash. Have you ever had this happen? Maybe just a problem with my machine that I have to figure out. I love your idea of putting essential oil in the dispenser. You explain things very well in your videos (I’ve also been making your whole wheat sourdough bread) - I’m guessing you are trained as a teacher!
Thank you for your questions and comments Arlyne, I really love to hear how people go with my recipes! I don't have any issue with my soap powder sticking inside the dispenser, but my machine is a relatively new Asko washer and it somehow blasts out all of the soap from the dispenser very effectively. Actually I remember a couple of times in my old Bosch washer, the soap got stuck a few times and what I did was put it in then shake/push back and forth the dispenser a bit so the soap went further down in the drawer, that seemed to help. I guess you'll work it out with your machine if you play around with it.
Thanks also for your kind comments about my 'teaching' style. I did actually train as a teacher many years ago, but I only did one year before deciding on a different path. I'm actually a social worker by profession, so I do spend all day communicating with people and I'm often trying to explain difficult concepts. Thanks again.
(ps. that's so great that you're making the bread too!)
Well, I figured out my problem! As I was cleaning out the little detergent tray (dispenser) of stuck detergent, I saw it written "LIQUID Detergent. Remove tray for POWDERED". So I removed the tray, and now the homemade soap gets washed down a ramp, free and clear, no problem! It pays to read instructions! Anyway, next I will try your ACV Shampoo. Keep up your excellent communication skills, Elly!
@@arlo6345 Thank You! I've got to run and check my machine. My homemade "dry" detergent got stuck in the dispenser. I bet I'm also supposed to remove the top blue part!! I've been just spooning the det. into the washer.
