I just want to give you a disclaimer - I am not an expert, I am just sharing what I and many others use to wash our family's laundry in an effort to use ingredients that are safe and economical. There is some evidence that using soap instead of detergent can cause a build up in your laundry. According to many sources, including Better Homes and Gardens, this can be remedied by adding 1/4 -1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar to your rinse cycle in place of fabric softener. I am aware that you all invest a lot of money into your family's clothing, bedding, towels, etc. and I would not want to recommend something that would harm your investment. If you have any concerns, please research all of the laundry detergent/soaps in order to make the best decision for your family. Blessings! Robin
There is an easy way to test if there’s build up in your laundry, at least if you have access to a “normal” top loading machine. Wash a load with your normal diy laundry soap. Then (either dry or wet) put in the same load of laundry with commercial laundry detergent, but stop it near the end of the wash cycle before it drains the water. If there is build up in the clothes, it will come out in the water used in the wash cycle. At least from a chemical technical stand point, a soap and a detergent are not the same class of molecules, and a chemical detergent is not something the average person can make at home. Let me be clear: I think it’s great that you shared the recipe since everyone was asking about it. And what you do with your own clothes is your business, not mine (also commercial laundry detergent is kind of a newer invention, people washed clothes without it for centuries). I personally use commercial laundry detergent that gets a good score on EWG’s website (I will never use anything tide brand), but everyone should decide what they want for themselves. Even if there is build up in your clothes, if you would rather have that then that’s ok.
love to read your disclaimer. as mine, i made my laundry soap and also fabric softener (distilled white vinegar). so every laundry i have 1/4 cup white vinegar with lemon oil. and i dont have problem with my laundry it end up smell fresh and even it dries it dont smell anything funky. and dont have problem also with my HE washing machine :) more research to help another for us to stay away from commercial products with full harmful chemicals.
Gotta say, I made this recipe last year and I'm just now needing to make another batch. I always use distilled white vinegar as my rinse agent. My clothes - including all of my nasty rags - come out very clean and smelling fresh. Thank you!
Hi Robin! I make my own laundry soap too with pretty much the same recipe that you shared. To save even more money I make my own washing soda. Take plain baking soda and spread it out on a cookie sheet, bake it for 30 min at 400 degrees. The heat converts the baking soda into washing soda. (Taken from Science Notes: Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaCHO3), while washing soda is sodium carbonate Na2CO3. When you heat baking soda, water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are driven off, leaving you with washing soda."). You need to let it cool before using though.
I recently found out that ash soda is basically the same as washing soda but with less water in it so you use half as much. I don’t know if this would be any better price wise than making it but another idea.
FYI borax when mixed with water turns into basically peroxide, is all natural and kills bacteria- that’s a plus in my book .Great video , thanks for sharing your recipe this is a lot of help .

Epson salt as fabric softener is amazing. Way better than white vinegar! And I’ve been using this laundry detergent for about 10 years and works great! Thanks for spreading the recipe!
I have made my own laundry detergent for the last 10 years. I've used both liquid and dry. I make a five pound bucket with dry laundry detergent, then I use a cup of that to make my own liquid. Mostly because I'm cheap. And 1.5 cups of dry makes 3 gallons of liquid. I use genuis in exiles formula. The bucket of dry has been going since Easter of 2014, it's now about half full.
@@ashiabeswick7579 sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I take 1.5 cups of dry and melt it in a half stock pot pan of water that is heating on the stove. After its melted I put it in a 3 gallon bucket and fill it the rest of the way with cold water. I use 1 cup, but I think next time I'm going to try 1/2 cup and see what it does.
I need to dispel a belief a lot of people have about HE washers. The belief is that they are always front-loaders. So....for the record....I have a top-loading, HE washer that has an agitator. That's another common belief....that HE washers don't have an agitator. Ooops. 😀 Some do ! I make my own laundry soap & have to say I enjoy making it. I vary the scent by using different scented bars of soap. I started out trying Zote...but I don't care of the smell of it or of Fels Naptha. I like to use plant-based bar soap.....I'll use Mrs.Meyer's or Dr. Bronners or Pre de Provence. I pre-mix my powdered laundry soap in a little water before adding it to my washer just to ensure it is totally dissolved first.
I have made my laundry soap basically the same for a long time. I usually use Zote soap though and for scent I use boosters and or lavender Epsom salts which is same as boosters. ....and Borax is safe. I actually add 1/8 teaspoon of it to glass of distilled water and 1 tablespoon of plain Epsom salt and dash of pink salt every morning and night to drink. Keeps me from having pain in my joints and bones I have broken growing up. Borax is natural and we used to get it naturally in our food but the grounds and fields are depleted of it now says and we need that mineral.
I used a similar recipe for years and stopped when I moved and purchased a new machine. I miss making my own laundry soap . The other day while shopping I saw a box of borax on the shelf and it reminded me to find a new recipe that would work in this machine. I thank you for posting this one and I'm fixin' to start back. BTW..I love how you used the food processor to make it super fine. Again...thank you
This is the recipe I use for my brothers, my dad, and I. The four of us made this last 10 months even with accidently using more than 1tbsp on our HE machine the whole time. For the heck of it I mixed some in with water and found it worked great as a spot cleaner on our carpet. I leave out the fragrance because my dad has skin allergy to the perfume and chemical fragrances in products. The detergent smells great with the lavender castile bars but the scent doesn't make it through to the end.
I used this recipe for our family of 5 about 6 months ago and am very happy with it, i used 1 to 2 TBS each time and still have not run out. Only change was I use 2 bottles of the method fragrance beads. I just ordered everything to make it again when we need it. Thanks for sharing, I’m just so pleased with it!
I have been using this recipe for many years also and LOVE it! I actually make a double batch so I have plenty to share with my young adult daughter and her college friends. They know they can bring me their empty containers and get a refill anytime. :-)
Fantastic. I made a batch using your tutorial. We have an incontinent dog and incontinent Mother in Law so our washer runs at least once each day and multiple loads on the weekends. One Tablespoon is all it takes.Whites are white and odors are gone. Thank you! Great idea with the food processor and Baking soda. Wish I could like your video more than once. One thing is for sure, I will like your soap the rest of my life!
I saw videos of others saying to use tools, I.e., graters, that are dedicated to just soap making. I have a Ninja blender and food processor. I guess if anything grinding up soap bars would make it really clean. Question: Do you use your food processor just for soap making or for other things as well?
Or if you want keep the baking soda and add Epsom salt to detergent mix in replace of the vinegar that way your laundry time is cut shorter. A couple of people have commented that earlier I am just repeating in case u didn't see it. 🙂
Having watched several RUclips videos making your own laundry detergent the recipes are quite similar. It was very exciting to think that we could make our own detergent for much less money but have to say I am very disappointed. I can't understand why everybody says this smells so good; it smells good when you are making it but when your laundry is finished that's a different story. I have to add additional scent boosters in the bottom of my washing machine before starting. Also, I found streaks of what looked like grease on my sheets. It is the bar soap because it does not melt. So I began putting the detergent in a cup and adding the hottest tap water I could. Next load I put the detergent in a larger bowl and hot water. It took 2 minutes in a 1,000 watt microwave for me to get the soap melted into the water. Since all of the dry products are laundry boosters I did not find the clothes to become as clean as with a regular store-bought laundry detergent. Now I am adding Dawn dish detergent as a degreaser. For those who may be interested in trying that it's one teaspoon per small load, two teaspoons per medium, three teaspoons for a large load. I have an extra capacity top loading washer so I have used two tablespoons of Dawn without a sudsing problem. If you try this keep in mind you need to watch for too much suds. I sure hope that this works and will enlighten others if they are having similar problems. It is not my intent to put this lady's video down in any way. It's just my honest feedback.
Honestly, I was wondering how people could say this works well. As someone skooled in Cosmetology, I can tell you that bar soap can only be made into a bar because something in it is making it stick together. Think about it for a sec’. That same substance will also cause it to stick to everything else; your body, shower stall, bathtub, etc. I watch people put this in homemade soaps and want to beg them to stop. It will only cling to your clothes AND your expensive machines. Castle soap especially is thee worst. No matter how “natural” it might be, that is the most clingy, filmy stuff out there. It’s horrible. I tried it once because of all the hype (and that was even the liquid form) and dumped it after one go around. It was insanely filmy and I had to use another cleanser just to remove the castle soap residue. Please do not use that stuff or any other bar soap. Again remember, if the soap is sticking together in bar form, that means it will stick to whatever else it is used on. Some of them can have great cleansing properties about them, but you then have to clean again just to remove the soap residue. That’s too much work therefore not a great option. And I have tried a few very similar homemade laundry detergent recipes and my husband and boys asked me to stop and change back to store bought. It was just not cleaning as well, and their clothes got dingy (refer back to my comments on bar soap), didn’t smell right and seemed to get dirty again if you just looked at the clothes wrong (I repeat, refer back to my comments on bar soap residue). These homemade detergents with bar soap added are sadly Not the biz 🙁. Please attempt something else if you’re on a tight budget
@@hismusicnme I was thinking the exact same thing with the bar of soap. I'm not a professional but it is just basic knowledge of a bar of soap that leaves residue in your shower to do the same to clothes and your washer. I'm not putting this video down either. I love this recipe but would substitute the soap. Still looking for more options.
I love making my own Washing Soda. At Costco I buy 13.5lb bags of Baking Soda really cheap. Turn on your oven to 400 degrees. Pour baking soda on a baking sheet. You can fill it as much as you want too. I put it in the oven and every 30 minutes I remove the pan and stir it up, then put it back in. They say one hour is all it takes to change it into washing soda. But I usually go longer cause I normally have quite a bit on the baking sheet. You can see when the change happens, its visual and chemical. The ph balance of the baking soda totally changes. It works amazing on my clothes. I add one cup to every wash load. It works so well that old blood stains even get removed! Its insane. Before I knew that I could make washing soda, I would just use baking soda in the laundry. Because baking the baking soda changes the ph and becomes caustic, it creates a clothes washing powerhouse. Its truly crazy how well it works. Thank You for this informative video. I will be trying this out :-)
One bar of zote is as big as 3 of those castile soap bars. It costs me 1.68 and smells like citronella. It is also supposed to repel mosquitos for a couple of days after a wash.
Hello I’m a new subscriber and have watched several different RUclipsrs and I find your recipe makes a lot more sense. Thank you for sharing. Will definitely give it a try 😊
Ok Ms Robin... I finally made this! I used a different fragrance booster but I think I did alright..I can't wait to see how long it lasts my family! ♥️ Thanks
I love this detergent! It really does last forever. It takes less to get the job done..but it is, for me, a lot of extra work once you run out. Making a new batch is not nearly as convenient as picking some up at the store...it's a commitment to stay with. However, it DOES work and it lasts for a very long time.
Hello! 😊 I appreciate you sharing your recipe!! Most of the ingredients all seem to be quite natural with one exception… The Method fragrance booster. And you may not be looking to keep the detergent all natural? - so this is just a comment for those who do wish to keep only natural products in their detergent and leave out the toxins. Note: I do believe Borax is all natural but I have read to use caution in handling it, so be sure to wear gloves and not get any in your eyes or ingest,, of course! And now about the Method fragrance booster- Just as a note for anyone - If you are looking for an all natural product, definitely skip the Method fragrance booster and do NOT include it. Method products are marketed as being from natural sources, however, they do use many chemical ingredients - including artificial chemical fragrances. Unfortunately, artificial fragrances ( often labeled as “fragrance” are some of the most toxic ingredients included in household cleaning products and beyond. I am just learning more about this recently and want to share it so someone looking to avoid toxic products, can make their choice in an informed way 😊. Unfortunately, artificial fragrances are often considered a chemical soup and there is no requirement at this time for cleaning products to include all ingredients to be listed on the product and they are not required to list all ingredients are in the fragrance (including in perfume) - because fragrances are often considered proprietary to that company/maker. Artificial fragrance can potentially be labeled as natural fragrance as well - just as “ natural flavoring “ on a food product does not mean it is actually a natural flavoring. Artificial fragrances (or “Fragrance”) are apparently frequently created from as many as hundreds or thousands of chemicals mixed together. It is possible that there are some natural components but those would be listed as essential oil, for instance. And many products in the marketplace may list Essential Oils As being an ingredient but may also list “fragrance” as an ingredient also, which is artificial. This particular product is not currently rated on the environmental working group website (EWG) at least I cannot locate it - - but many of Method’s laundry products are rated D - such as their mango ginger laundry detergent. These chemical-based fragrances are particularly problematic and toxic in laundry products because we inhale them when we wear our clothes, when we sleep on our sheets, when we use our towels etc. etc.… I think you see what I am saying - we are inhaling these chemicals 24 hours a day most likely if we wash our clothes and everything else with chemically fragranced products. A safe option for most people, is to consider using 100% natural essential oils to achieve a fragrance - Whichever one appeals to you - Lemon, orange, a blend of citrus, Lavender, Pine - there are a multitude of choices, of course - all from nature 🌸. Some people might be sensitive to essential oils as well so it is best to test it out before adding to a recipe such as this ;) - someone might be sensitive to one essential oil and do better with different ones. Hope this helps anyone who is looking for a recipe for an all natural laundry detergent! Blessings 😊💜 PS. A good source for natural cleaning recipes is Lisa Bronner‘s RUclips channel or blog or Dr. Bronner you tube channel. They utilize the Dr. Bronner products but also have a lot of other great ideas - I have no affiliation with them, I simply love their products - such as their amazing Castile soaps which have been made in the U.S. since around 1948!
Hi Robin is it possible to use essential oil in the laundry detergent instead of fragrance booster, and if its okay, when would you add it? Thanks for the videos.
I am so glad to have found this tutorial. I have spend days looking for a complete guide on how to make my own laundry detergent and I have to say yours is the best step-by-step complete guide. Thank you so much. I have all my supplies, so I am going to replay the video as I make my own.
Just came across your channel and I love it! Something so calm and positive about your energy. This is only the second video I’ve seen but Im learning so much, I will be binge watching your channel! 😀💜 God bless you and your channel 😍
Thank you so much Vasita and welcome! I appreciate your kind words and I hope to get to know you here in the comments! Have wonderful weekend and God Bless you as well! 💛😊💛
I just found you too, and this is also the second video I've watched lol! You have inspired me and I'm going to look into making laundry detergent at home. The savings would be considerable, especially being a disabled single parent on a fixed income. I have a HE top-loading machine and am a little concerned about powdered detergent not dissolving properly, especially when run with cold water for dark colors...
Thank you so much for this! Just tried it out and I’m really impressed by how well it works. Everything smells fresh and is clean. I just have a couple stains that didn’t come out and was wondering if I should add a bit more of one particular ingredient to get out the stains? I.e. Which ingredient of these you used is best for stain fighting? I can add a bit more to the mix
I'm definitely going to make this. I absolutely love the smell of Mrs. Meyer's honeysuckle detergent, and even use the dryer sheets, but the smell is nonexistent on my sheets when i put them on my bed.
the ''smell'' on the dryer sheets and in the laundry detergent is used to cover up the toxic oder from the chemicals that are used in the products to clean and soften your clothes. It is far healthier for your family, and the environment to make your own. Plus, the liquid laundry detergents you buy at the store are mostly water.
I spend a large amount of our budget on cleaning products every year. I love the idea of saving so much money for my family. I have sensitive skin and wonder if eliminating the scent booster would make this a safe option?
This is a great video! I make my laundry soap as well but I use Zote soap. I love the smell of it without adding any fragrance enhancers at all. It’s only $1.00 at Family dollar and is equal to 2 bars.
I have always used castile soap, but I've seen lots of recipes that use Zote. It sounds like your recipe is even more economical! Does the scent last in your laundry? Maybe I'll give that a try next time! Thanks Jill!
I have seen felt naphtha used also. It's great to have so many choices! It sounds like you've got some really great options and I'm so glad find out what others are doing! Thanks so much!
I’m in the process of making this . My massage therapist told me about it. She told me to grate and then let to dry up but it’s day 2 and it’s not drying 😭 the Zote soap is SO wet . We don’t sell the Zote soap here in Canada so she gets friends to get it from the US
I'LL NEVER BUY A HUGH LARGE BOX/PAIL/TUB OF LAUNDRY DETERGENT EVER AGAIN - I JUST EMPTIED A LARGE PLASTIC TUB - AND - WONDERED WHAT I WAS GOING TO USE IT FOR... - NOW I KNOW - AND - I ALREADY HAVE A SCOUP... - WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO
I've just make a 5 gallon bucket with 2 boxes of borax 1 box of washing soda, 3 boxes of oxy clean cheap version, 1/12 bars of zote soap, 2 bottles dishwashing liquid, 1 box of baking soda, 1/12 container of gain scent boost, and a little vegetable glyserin, heated it all in water, the next day blended the mixture with power drill stir stick, and used one top full off a detergent bottle in load of clothes, and so far I'm not impressed, the water is completely dirty therefore it's cleaning well, but it dosent have any smell! Maybe I need more fragrance?
Hi Robin, I look forward to trying your recipe for laundry detergent. I’m curious- what size is your container? Also, I’m in Florida where summer is very humid and my laundry room is in the garage. Will the detergent clump in high humidity?
Yes it can. It's best to keep 1 or 2 of those silica gel packets stored inside the air tight container on top of your DIY laundry detergent ..to absorb moisture when storing in a high humidity area.
Would you say the detergent still works with cold water settings? Or do you recommend only using it with warm/hot water? I’m worried it won’t dissolve all the way
You can mix 1 or 2 tablespoons of the powder in a cup with hot water & stir to dissolve the powder, then pour the cup of soapy water directly into the drum of the washer, then put in your items to wash.
My son had allergies of all kinds when he was a baby and child. I used Borax in his laundry. Not only did it help clean, but also whitened his close . And if you have ever used any baby formula you know how stubborn stains are so had to remove. The other things I used was Ivory Sniw..., and Dreft. I had to alternate after each box. The only other thing I used was vinegar. I hope this info helps someone
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. Adding the scent boosters and processing all the ingredients in a food processor was a great idea. I actually use Dr Bronner's Sal Suds and Oxy Clean. But if I omit the bar soap I could use your recipe in place of the Oxy Clean!!
Preparing to make my own laundry soap. Curious as to why you add baking soda. Other recipes I’ve researched only use borax, soap and washing soda (with scent boosters optional). Will add to my recipe if you can tell me the benefit. Enjoyed the vid, look forward to more! New subscriber.
I use this same recipe except I use fels naphtha soap.. 97 cents at wallyworld and Downey beads. Borax has so many uses. Research it you will be happy you did. I used borax a lot when my babies were in diapers. I kept a bucket of 1 cup mixed with hot water on top of my washer and put the soiled cloth diapers in after rinsing in toilet. Washed daily or every other day as they got older and went less. Kept the diapers sparkling white and neutralized odor immediately. . Before people gasp at the work of cloth diapers....my kids all were potty trained quick (2 yrs old), never had rashes and we saved tons $ and helped the environment. We did use disposables at night and when out on errands. Made my own cute covers with velcro so no pins and only had to buy a pk of disposables once a month as the result. I also was a stay at 🏡 👩. Without borax I would not have done it though. I was afraid of the smell. But as I said it neutralized it immediately.
what cuisinart food processor do you have those seem like really great machines !! wow I tried making my own 5 years ago and had to hand shred the dr bronners soap but this looks so much more achievable!! I will try this recipe Thank you!! love your videos Robin !!
Great video! Plan to use this, but I don’t have a food processor. Can I still make all of this? Also, if I make this recipe do I no longer need oxiclean for whites? Thank you!
Hi Robin, love this video thank you! I used to make something similar with soap, borax and washing soda. Do you know why the added baking soda? Thank you!
Hi Hannah! The original recipe came from The Complete Book of Clean by Toni Hemmersley. I have seen several versions with the same ingredients from many sources. I am not a chemist and couldn't explain other than I understand that the baking soda helps soften the water and is used as a laundry booster. 😊
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to make this laundry detergent but I don't like using powder detergents. Could this be made into liquid detergent? Thank you again for your time .GOD BLESS FROM DUNMORE,PENNSYLVANIA
Hi I just started making my own laundry soap I like your recipe thank you so much for posting it but I was just wondering if you ran into any problems I've been reading some comments on other homemade laundry detergents that in the beginning they work great the colored clothes are very vibrant for the color in the whites are very white but after a while they don't do the same job and start looking. I was wondering if you had any problems like that and there was saying their towels stop absorbing water in the wash sounded kind of funny
Hi Robin! Im going to be using this recipe as well but im curious as to the water temperature as I usually wash on cold setting. Will everything dissolve just as good,,, I hope so! Thanks for sharing!!
Hi Tonia! You could definitely replace the scent boosters with essential oils, however, I have found that the scent doesn't linger long in your laundry. I think that it works better to add the essential oils to some wool dryer balls in order to transfer the scent to your clothes. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day!
I was wondering the same thing. The Think Dirty app rates the fragrance boosters an 8 for toxicity due to synthetic fragrance, which is huge in disrupting hormones. I was thinking of using a scented dr bonners soap and then adding in Tea Tree EO, which should give a great smell and alternative. I agree in making a homemade dryer sheet dipped in vinegar and EOs to help with the scent while drying or wool balls. Has anyone else tried replacing the fragrance boosters?
Your videos are so relaxing and positive. I have a question- my toddler girl has extremely sensitive skin and her pediatrician has asked us to use detergents which don't have scent and are dyes/ sulfides free. Can this combination sans the scent addition work for her laundry? Also how much quantity should be added for a GE washer dryer combo machine? Does this also work on oil/harsh dirt stains
Thank you! Leaving out the scent boosters is fine. As far as your daughter’s sensitive skin, I think this is a good recipe for that, but I don’t know the degree of her sensitivity. I would wash a few articles of her clothing and see how she reacts. I am not familiar with your type of washing machine, so I don’t know how much detergent to recommend. I have a standard HE machine and 1 Tablespoon works for most loads. I pretreat stains before washing and don’t have any issues with it not getting our laundry clean. 😊
Hi Guisell! I have quite sensitive skin myself and this works great for me. Leaving out the fragrance booster might be something to consider as that is something that could be irritating for very sensitive people. 😊
I’ve made this several times over the years. I don’t find it to clean my clothes as well as a commercial detergent. My husband was a mechanic and it didn’t seem to get the grease out.
Also rubbing a Fels Naptha bar on the worst areas will help. My husband is in the trades and his work clothes are always filthy. I have also heard about Pine Sol getting out grease.
love your recipe. will try it next time. i have mine, it is diy liquid laundry soap. i have it using for 3months already :) so nice a lot of people doing homemade
I’m so glad I found this old video. I hate buying the huge bottles of the highly scented and colored laundry detergent. I’m going to try this! I like a scent, but not too strong, so being able to customize is ideal.
I made a half batch and loved it! I’m gathering the ingredients to make more. I didn’t keep close track, but I’m not sure mine lasted as long as I expected. I’ll pay closer attention to this next batch.
I am all set to make my own but I’ve read that it’s soap and not detergent and doesn’t clean the clothes as well. What are your thoughts on that? I was so excited to make it and now I’m a little hesitant. Can you give me some advice? Edit... I just read your long comment haha. I’m still going to try it I think.
The issue is the ph. Regular soap has a neutral ph (around 7) which is great for skin but too mild for cleaning. I make a soap with a ph of 11 to 12, then make that into laundry powder - works great. If you can’t make your own soap, you could get a pack of ph test strips and rest bought soaps.
Hi Emma! It dissolves great using my front loader. Taking the extra step of using my food processor really helps. I can use the dispenser in my machine and I have never had a problem with it clogging. Hope that helps!

@Pat Carpenter I put a 5lb bag of Epsom salt in with the mix and use accordingly, works well and one less step before washing 😊
I made the detergent tonight. It smell so good. I did my first load and was very pleased. Thank you.
Yo the baking soda in the food processor with the soap is pure genius. Good job!
That's how I do mine. :)
Does using the food processor ruin it over time? Also does the plastic of the food processor take in the smell of smell of the chemicals?
I have made my own laundry detergent for the last 10 years. I've used both liquid and dry. I make a five pound bucket with dry laundry detergent, then I use a cup of that to make my own liquid. Mostly because I'm cheap. And 1.5 cups of dry makes 3 gallons of liquid. I use genuis in exiles formula. The bucket of dry has been going since Easter of 2014, it's now about half full.
Judy, thank you!! I was wondering how to make liquid laundry detergent!!
How do u make your laundry
Say again how you make it liquid?
@@nildameers3772 I'm pretty sure u just add water
I've used borax for years to cleanse my hair from hairspray and styling products. It's brilliant.
Again...thank you
I’m going try this recipe this weekend. I spend a lot of money on commercial laundry detergent.
So you doubled up on the fragrance beads? No problems with it?
Been doing this since 2017, saves money and last long. Clothes cines out clean no itching
I’ve been adding Borax to my laundry for many years. It’s much cheaper than oxy-cleaners or non-chlorine boosters and works great!
How large is the container you are putting your mixture in?
Thanks for the baking soda in the food processor to keep from sticking, I used Fels Naptha, very strong clean scent
I'm going to try this, minus the baking soda, plus using vinegar in the rinse cycle for fabric softener.
Baking soda and vinegar do the same things with opposite pHs. Remember: they cancel eachother out so don’t use both!!
It's true. Haven't tried it yet with bar soap but basic knowledge brings me to the soap scum. Thank u I think I may try the dawn soap
I am going to try this recipe. I've used others but I like the use of castile soap. Thank you for sharing.
Hope you like it Leona! Merry Christmas! ❤️💚❤️
Ok Ms Robin... I finally made this! I used a different fragrance booster but I think I did alright..I can't wait to see how long it lasts my family! ♥️ Thanks
RJ Smith how’d it go?
How did it go?
How do you like it so far?
I love this detergent! It really does last forever. It takes less to get the job done..but it is, for me, a lot of extra work once you run out. Making a new batch is not nearly as convenient as picking some up at the store...it's a commitment to stay with. However, it DOES work and it lasts for a very long time.
fragrance is very toxic for your skin...
Blessings 😊💜
PS.
Hi Robin
is it possible to use essential oil in the laundry detergent instead of fragrance booster, and if its okay, when would you add it? Thanks for the videos.
Thank you! What a help in these heavy times... Bless you! :)
Thanks Robin! This is the best recipe ever! 🙌🏼
Thank you! May the Lord bless you!
I am so glad to have found this tutorial. I have spend days looking for a complete guide on how to make my own laundry detergent and I have to say yours is the best step-by-step complete guide. Thank you so much. I have all my supplies, so I am going to replay the video as I make my own.
I'll have to try this. I normally make a liquid with Fels or Zote...
Borax is actually very very good for you, its an element that your body NEEDS
Yes it gets parasites out of your body 😮

Jasmine, you can use a bar of the Castile soap as a pre wash for stains, just rub a bar on the stain. :)
Thank you for your videos. Will you share what lipstick color you wear? It's so subtle and beautiful yet looks like a cool toned color.
I use to do my own laundry soap, it's been years. I actually can't wait to start again.
I spend a large amount of our budget on cleaning products every year. I love the idea of saving so much money for my family. I have sensitive skin and wonder if eliminating the scent booster would make this a safe option?
I enjoyed this video, but wondering what temperature you wash in to dissolve the detergent?
This is a great video! I make my laundry soap as well but I use Zote soap. I love the smell of it without adding any fragrance enhancers at all. It’s only $1.00 at Family dollar and is equal to 2 bars.
I have always used castile soap, but I've seen lots of recipes that use Zote. It sounds like your recipe is even more economical! Does the scent last in your laundry? Maybe I'll give that a try next time! Thanks Jill!
Faith and Flour I like the smell of the Zote soap but some people use fels naptha also. I made the liquid version with Zote too. I like both.
We don’t sell the Zote soap here in Canada so she gets friends to get it from the US
@@FaithandFlourI find castle soap leaving films. Is it just me?
Where did you purchase the glass container for the laundry detergent?
I’ve been wanting to make my own laundry detergent. I’ll be giving this a try. Question…the jar you keep it in…is it air tight?
Making this today!! $30 for a year is going to save me $100s
Would you say the detergent still works with cold water settings? Or do you recommend only using it with warm/hot water? I’m worried it won’t dissolve all the way
I just made my first batch ! This is my question also ! If anyone has used this in cold water how did it work for you?
@@susanwooten9390 I just saw your reply, I can tell you I’ve been using this for about ten months now and it works fine in cold water!
This is a great idea, but the soap wreaks havoc on your machine. Then if you use vinegar very often it breaks down the seal on your machine.
Thanks for the video. I saw another video that said the soap zote soap ruined the HE machine? How long have you been using this method?
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. Adding the scent boosters and processing all the ingredients in a food processor was a great idea. I actually use Dr Bronner's Sal Suds and Oxy Clean. But if I omit the bar soap I could use your recipe in place of the Oxy Clean!!
Hi Latifah! I've never tried that - but it might work. Let me know how it goes! Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!

How much scent booster beads for this recipe?
This looks great! What a geniusly simple recipe!
Does the scent fade away as time goes on?
No, as long you transfer it to small jugs and keep them in tight containers.
Your kitchen is adorable. Very beautiful

Thank you!
Is this hypoallergenic? I want to make this and I can't wait. I was also wondering is there a measurement list or just eye ball the product?
I think making my our own is fun.

Jill DeCamillis perfect, thank you!
Jill DeCamillis how did the ninja work out?
It just makes sense to try it! Good for the skin, the planet, our pocket!!! Could essential oils substitute the Methode Fragrance Boosters???
Hi Tonia! You could definitely replace the scent boosters with essential oils, however, I have found that the scent doesn't linger long in your laundry. I think that it works better to add the essential oils to some wool dryer balls in order to transfer the scent to your clothes. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day!
I eliminate the fragrance boosters and use essential oils. Those boosters contain all kinds of chemicals that you don't want touching your skin.
@@LangKatharine have you looked at the ingredients of the Method Fragrance Boosters? I use their body wash and I believe their ingredients are fine
That’s so amazing!🙏
I’m just curious, if borax is a cleanser and kills bacteria why do you add the baking soda and soap? 🙏😀
Odor and grease removal
Does the soap leave a lasting smell in your food machine ?
I supplement with borax... and reaping all the benefits. :)
Nice Video, i use plain baking soda and essential oil
When do you put the essential oil in?
Hi! Thank you for the recipe. Is this laundry detergent safe enough to for delicate skin?

If you add a cap full of pinesol to his work clothing it will CUT grease like no other.
Are you using hot or cold water?
Also rubbing a Fels Naptha bar on the worst areas will help. My husband is in the trades and his work clothes are always filthy. I have also heard about Pine Sol getting out grease.

Would this recipe work in a mini washing machine and does it leave any residue? I am getting my first apartment and looking how to save money!
How much would you use for a top-loading machine large load?

I have a granddaughter on her way. Will this be safe enough for infants?
How many measured cups would you say this recipe makes... how many gallons is your glass container

Hello I have a front loader and was wondering how well do the detergent dissolve in a front loader
Hi Emma! It dissolves great using my front loader. Taking the extra step of using my food processor really helps. I can use the dispenser in my machine and I have never had a problem with it clogging. Hope that helps!
Do you use this food processor for your food too or just for the soap?
Great question 🤔
Borax is amazing
Where is this a year thing? I tried it & completely used it up way before the year. Help!
You are beautiful! Thanks for the tips!!
