    I still have my Pismo, tons and tons of miles on it. Absolutely love it, it's a completely unstoppable machine. The optical drive still works. Only thing that's bad on it is the battery.

      I’m still using the Pismo that I bought back in 2000. Mainly I use it for nostalgia reasons and the odd game. The browser can’t access modern websites but for word processing/spreadsheets and games, it works fine. Shame that the battery died years ago!

    The only computer I ever had true affection for. It was the last machine i had running os 9. Hated the G4s and OSX. I just bought one on ebay and installed OS 9 to record music and MIDI with ProTools Free again. I've been using logic on Powerbooks for years, but there's something nice about having my old buddy from when I was 20 in pre-9/11 USA as a dedicated digital 8 track audio recorder. This G3 was last computer that I used as a tool primarily for creative work as opposed to a for web browsing/social media consuming/feed streaming distraction device. It feels substantial. I like the touch of the smooth rubbery top. I'm going to buy a couple more and some new old stock replacement bits. I figure I have 30 or 40 years left on earth at most. These things will totally make it that long.

    I own a Pismo with the 500Mhz cpu option, a 120gb hdd and a dvd rewriter, my pismo is in good condition, except for the port door, the previous owner broke it off, the main battery whas completely dead, but i have solder skills so i replaced all the 9 cells in my battery and i get around 5 hours of mixed use out of it, which is awesome, i use this primarly for music as the dac in this device is awesome, and some old games offcourse, it is still a very usefull machine and i love the design and the apple logo the wrong way around when its open! I bought this pismo about a year ago for 20 euro's and yes, it had a dead pram battery, i replaced the pram battery and the machine is in topcondition now! This is a awesome video and i hope we can keep those old macs going for a very long time to come!

    Pretty much every PowerBook G3 excluding the Kanga and probably the most robust G3 laptops I’ve ever encountered. With the Pismo being the ultimate G3 PowerBook, the Wallstreet/PDQ being the ultimate classic G3 laptop, the Kanga being an iconic one of a kind G3 model, and then there’s the Lombard that just… was kind of a stop gap more than anything.

    small correction for anyone watching not knowing better, the X is the Roman numeral for 10, so it should be said as Ten not X, when saying Mac OS X

    Nice, honest review!
    I will say though, that as a longtime Mac user, it bothered me every time you said "OS Ex" and "pram" instead of "OS 10" and "P-Ram". Good video though, and it's neat to see you use it for lots of different stuff. When I had my Pismo, it was running Tiger just fine, though, the internet back in 2006 was a lot lighter than today's internet. :P

      I dunno if its a Brit thing to smush acronyms like PRAM together together, as I've always said things like SNES as a whole and I've heard others like Ashens do it too, but yea, saying OSX with an X isn't an isolated observation, others have said it grated on them too so its somthing I'll take on board for future content. Cheers!

      Bollocks. “zap the pram” was always the order of the day ‘round my way, it was X, never 10. And switching to "Mac OS" instead of “System” was a weird affectation that came in with the advent of clone machines.

    • @JeffGeerling

    Excellent overview of this classic Apple laptop computer. Of all the laptops made by Apple which, I own only this model (the PowerBook G3 Pismo) is the laptop, I call my baby. Almost 20 years old now, I still think it has the best design, styling, and power!
    While, only a collectors item now still enjoy using its two "hot" swapable drive bays for an extra battery, super disk drive, zip drive, and DVD/CD drive. Also, I have fun downloading my digital camera photos using its USB port and movies from my video recorder using its Firewire port. While, at the same time having an apple mouse connected into the other USB port and using an external Hard Drive drive connected to the other Firewire port. When needing to use a Flash Drive, I just remove the mouse and use its USB port. For operating systems, I currently use both the classic OS 9.1 and OS X 10.3.

    Interestingly, I have the original battery that holds a charge like new, the clock battery is also original and charged, yet the Powerbook still not booting. I think it is due to the firmware I put on 11 years ago 4.1.8 f5, before that 4.1.8 was flashed onto it and worked fine.

    Nice channel. Keep up the good work. I see you actually have some of the more interesting Macs from the early 2000s, the TiBook, iBook, AlBook. It would be great if you cover them along with the earlier OSX stuff on your channel. It's a matter of taste of course, but I personally find MacOS Classic and anything pre-G3 from Apple pretty boring. 1999 to 2004 was truly Apple's golden age.

    Is it possible/could it be possible to get a pram replacement for the ones that doesn't work ? Even if it is a third party replacement ? Since maybe then you wouldn't need to press the reset button . Or is that too cumbersome ? Anyway I am just thinking, and great channel you have, I really enjoy watching those videos about the old macs and the games :)

      I think it would be possible to solder one yourself. I did one for an IBM thinkpad, because the prices for those batteries were insane on ebay. I looked it up - it was a regular type of battery with some wires and a connector attached to it. I desoldered the wires from the original, soldered them to a new battery and that was it. Paid 2€.

    I have a good trick for this one. If you want to use WiFi without any problem. Find an Airport, and old one, Apple AirPort m 1999, the silver one like an UFO. If you break apart the router inside you are going to find a Silver PCMCIA card with an strange Orinoko (I thing Orinoko, I can't remember right now) chipset which runs perfect without drivers or anything, you can even Hack wifi with that damn card.

    I bought a Pismo after watching this video! It is such a sturdy little machine. Like you said, it is no show, but all go! You mentioned in this video that you record most of your footage from your Pismo. What is your solution for recording the footage?

    • @YesterYearsMacGames
      @YesterYearsMacGames  6 лет назад +1

      Nice purchase! I've got a capture card slotted into my modern tower so the Pismo can input into it via VGA and treat it like an external monitor. OBS can then record the mirrored screen. Works great for most things, theres a bit of input lag so some fast mouse controlled games that can't mirror sprites are a bit tricky to play well but for 95% of the titles its seamless.

  • @anss321
    @anss321 6 лет назад +1

    Seems like an interesting machine. How does older games like Alone in the Dark, Civilization, Dark Forces, Day of the Tentacle, SimCity 2000, Master of Orion 2, and such run on it?
    I've long wanted a Mac just to try out old 68k games. I've considered getting a G4/G3 laptop or Mac Mini before but I have no idea if the games I want to test runs on machines that late. Earlier machines are either too expensive or, from what I heard, in urgent need of having the capacitors replaced.

    • @apexofbeing
      @apexofbeing 6 лет назад +2

      So I bought a Pismo after watching this video! CD drive and speakers work perfectly! Set me back about a hundred bucks on ebay for one in such good condition, but well worth it. I haven't tested out any of the games you mentioned yet, but I'll give you some of my impressions. I've run older 90s games like Pathways into Darkness, Journeyman Project and Return to Zork (which was very finnicky till I switched my resolution to 640x480) and they work perfectly! The main niggle you will face is some older games (particularly older shareware games) will demand you run them in 16 colours, which the Pismo does not seem to support. So it's either greyscale or they won't work at all.
      I tried running Oni on it (a 3D game of 2001 vintage) but I feel like it was probably a bit of a long shot. Even though I ran the OpenGL installer, it didn't seem to work and Oni refused to start up. Maybe I'm an idiot and there is a workaround I missed but maybe that's about where the limitations of the Pismo are. I'm going to give Escape from Monkey Island a go later and see if it works though.
      Overall, as long as you can boot into System 9, I would say the Pismo will play most mac games from about 1990-2000 pretty well. Like YYM said, it will probably play some less taxing games of the early OSX era as well. I am going to test out out some of those games you mentioned and report back on them though!

    • @YesterYearsMacGames
      @YesterYearsMacGames  6 лет назад +1

      The ones of those that i've played there on it without issue are Sim City 2000, Civ 2 and Orion. I imagine that Day of the Tentical is fine too as Full Throttle works well on it. Alone in the Dark's page on Macintosh Garden states that it needs some help from an extention called 'G3 throttle' which slows down the CPU to avoid a bug with using the stairs.

    • @anss321
      @anss321 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks. I remember playing Oni on a Voodoo 3, so you may need a graphic card for that game to run well. I don't think laptops of that era had 3D graphics built in yet. Escape should run fine, if I recall correctly, as 3d hardware wasn't required.
      If I'm not mistaken from my earlier research, something like System 7.5 is the ideal for the older Mac games, as some games simply wont run on System 9 regardless of the underlying hardware.

    • @anss321
      @anss321 6 лет назад

      Nice. Civ 2 is a great game, but I never fell in love with it. Civilization 1 OTOH I love, and I've played it on Amiga, DOS and Windows. Each version is different, and I enjoy that, even when the differences are slight.
      I'm not surprised to hear that Alone in the Dark got CPU issues. The game have similar problems on the PC. There's also throttling programs to "fix" issues like them, but I've yet to encounter one that works well. Games get frame pacing issues when you throttle the CPU more than 20-30%, and you typically need to throttle 80-90%. I suspect you get better mileage by disabling all CPU caches, if that's possible to do on a Mac.
      Day of the Tentacle might run fine, but it's one of those games that pushes low level boundaries. It's therefore a good game to check if the system truly is compatible with older Mac hardware or doing some sort of high level emulation. If it runs like a slide show, it's high level emulation at play.

I don't think i'v ever heard it spin up on my one, although that said, its still got the original thermal pad on it which will be thoroughly dysfunctional by now. I've been meaning to sort that out.
