Hard palm sliders are absolutely nessecery. Hard palm sliders reduce risk of broken lower arm bones and when falling the hand doesnt stick to road, but slides freely. You can easily break arm riding in city, if you fall directly on palm.

Those are not meant for abrasion absorption. The idea is that if you fall on your hand, it will slide hence preventing all the weight from being absorbed by your hand's bones and not braking. That could happen at any speed.
