Shaun -- a very minor point (which is why I put it in a reply so hopefully no one but you will see it). You don't normally say "happy Memorial Day." Memorial Day is to honor those who died for our country, and we're not 'happy' that they had to die.

Patriot Guard Riders is a national group that many bike clubs take part in. They attend funerals of veterans and create a flag line at the service and at the cemetery showing their honor for those who serve. It is a beautiful thing and though not a biker myself I count our local group as my personal friends for their service in honoring our military men.

Thanks for the respect, some us Vietnam veterans had little of that when we came home, hell I actually got fired for being a veteran back in the day. A lot of fine folks will say thank you for your service, and that's nice. But few people of our age who were here when we came back will ever say sorry for what we put you through. Old scars never really heal, and being second class citizens was a lot to add to our nightmares and struggles here. Your respect is a gift of immense value!

Memorial Day is the "unofficial" start of Summer here in the US (at least, here in New England). This is the day for Parades (veterans), Flags, Barbecues (depending where you are it differs. for Northeast people is just hamburgers and hotdogs cooked on a griller). It is done normally on your patio/deck at home, surrounded by your family and neighbors. I think this year it is possible to do your first barbecue of this season, but probably you won't have many guests, because we cannot have gatherings with more that 10 people.

@@slydermartin6008 There are over 30 million veterans in the US and over 2/3rds of them are at risk with Coronavirus. Your barbecue on Memorial Day could cause more Veteran Tombstones for next Memorial Day. I would hope you could show more respect for those veterans. But lets face it, self centered assholes only ever think of themselves anyhow.

So good to see your post today! Thank you for appreciating America and real Americans and not expecting us to be like all those TV actors. Another aspect of Memorial Day in America is honoring our family members who are deceased. Today my husband and I traveled to three small towns close to us to decorate the graves of our family members. We are professional florists so we made beautiful silk flower arrangements to sit on top of the headstones. Not everyone does this but those who wish to are a significant number. So it still is ‘Decoration Day’ somewhat! A large part of the population will grill outside, find a place to swim, saturate our yards, houses, cars and even our selves with the American flag or red, white and blue clothing choices. We are VERY patriotic! Probably 1/4th of the population has Scottish blood so we are very excited to meet someone from Scotland! BTW I have NEVER been to Washington, it is in my future plans so I am very jealous that you have been but very proud also. If you every go through any small town in America on Memorial Day you would be invited to eat with almost anyone you meet if you explain your adventure! We would have a fun, family oriented relaxing day on Fri, Sat, Sun or Monday of Memorial Day weekend! Come again soon!

Where one of the battles took place. What a place to visit. My ancestor fought in the American Revolution, the first Battle of Long Island. He was under General George Washington and was a POW for four years of the Revolution. My father served in the Coast Guard after WWIi, and he is buried at the National Cemetery in Burnell, Florida. A peaceful and tranqill place. I remember my family and those who served and died tommorow. So much history throughout the US for you and yours to discover. Take care.

Memorial Day: it’s a tearjerker. The US isn’t just a haphazard country or one of simple cultural/genetic heritage. We’re a land maintained by freedom, curiosity, tenacity, and courage. Those who died to preserve this precious “Great Experiment” are my greatest heroes. There are many sayings in America about liberty, but this one gets to me: “from time to time, the tree of Liberty must be watered with the blood of patriots.”

Shaun, Cheers to my Scottish Cousin! Thank you for featuring Memorial Day in America. We celebrate by visiting our loved one's gravesites. Later, we usually head over to a relative's home, or friend, for a huge barbecue. The women prepare & bring their favorite dishes that go well with barbecued meats. And Shaun, as you know, we take barbecuing here very seriously! Memorial Day here in America is a serious holiday where we all honor those who fought in wars & those that did not survive the wars they served in. So, we most definately honor the fallen, but also the survivors of war. In America, we honor ALL Veterans & Active Duty Military, and all that fought for American Values for Freedom. It IS a huge holiday here, and I am so glad you got to experience the Honorable Day at Arlington National Cemetary. I've been there myself; when you see all those grave markers, it is an overwhelming experience. I cried. Thank you for featuring your experience on our great National Holiday. I will be saying prayers for my beloved friends that fell in the Vietnam Conflict (War), and older Family and friends that survived or fell, or those who have passed on. Cheers to Scotland and much Love❣

Hi Shaun. Right now life is hard in almost every country of this world. Our discouragement is high, but our hopes for a great future is also high. We truly appreciate your video. Sometimes I am discouraged with my own country and all I have to do is watch one of your videos and see it from your point of view to know how special it really is. I wish to meet you one day along the streets of either US or Scotland (in which I love). You are a bright spot in hard times. Thank you.

Thank you sir for leaving politics out of your content and for not confusing the American people with whoever is or is not in power. Thank you for being, always entertaining, informative and fun. Slainte! Can't wait until I visit Your country some time next year... Assuming this virus is finally gone by then.

Hi Shaun! I am a Retired U.S. Army Veteran and saw an opportunity for you to learn a little more about Memorial Day. I know there are even those here in the U.S. that say "Have a Happy Memorial Day". However, saying "Happy" in front of Memorial Day do not go together. The holiday is actually a somber day to remember those who have "Given All" for the good of their country. The problem we have here in the U.S. is that it has become commercialized by companies only interested in making monetary profit. From the veteran perspective we see it as a day of remembering our fallen friends, ancestors and reflection. I am not knocking you for saying "Happy Memorial Day", just wanted to help you understand more about how it is perceived by many in the U.S. Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks for sharing this! I was born in DC and raised in Maryland (currently living in OH), so this holds a special place in my heart. I recognize the sound of the 17 year cicadas in the background! I haven't experienced that in quite a while! 🙂

When it's done you should come to Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Dells has a lot of fun things to do. If you come during August, you should go to Oshkosh to see Airventure.

What a nice thing to stumble upon on Memorial Day! I'm so happy that you had a wonderful experience and met nice people. I'm excited for you to visit other parts of America so you can not only learn about our great land, but you will meet even more amazing people. The South and the Midwest have some of the best people anywhere! New Orleans is home to me and unlike any other city in American... can't wait until you visit her! Happy Travels!

Shaun, it was such a pleasure watching your video and how your first experience in the US was like. The fact that it was such an obviously positive experience for you was nice to hear. America gets slammed so much, that when a rare instance of someone not from the US actually has something nice to say about it, it's disarmingly refreshing. So yeah, please come back as soon as this stupid beer virus thing is over and enjoy your stay here. America is admittedly not perfect at all, but it's unique in that pretty much anybody can come here and rise to whatever level of success they want as long as they're willing to put in the sacrifices in order to achieve it. And if you ever want to experience the true quintessential "California beach experience" and not the glammed up Hollywood version of it, I would suggest you stop and visit Huntington Beach (it's not called Surf City USA for no reason), Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach. Bring tons of sunscreen though, because you'll need it! Plenty of sunshine!! Welcome Shaun!!!

First of all, I would like to say "Ceud mile failte!" from an American of Mexican ancestry that just so happens to have Scot-Irish ancestry through Northern Ireland and English ancestry through England. I am glad that this trip was a life-changing experience for you.
I am a Vietnam veteran and went to DC for the first (and so far only) time, when the statue of The Three Fighting Men was dedicated.
I am also a Scottish Country dancer and we were supposed to go to Scotland this year for a big meet up of some kind. Had we gone, then we would have been the first American contingent to attend. Unfortunately, the coronavirus changed everything. I hope to visit Scotland some day, until then, Slainte Mhath mo caraid!

It's so nice to find your video today...thanks for all your complaints about American...we get a lot of stereotypes about American and your showing a side I want people to see ... I myself am a Native American Indian (Algonquin and Mohawk) tribes..
I live near Niagara Falls about 20 minutes away and if you come here let me know and I will give you a tour of Niagara Falls new York... most people dont know Niagara Falls is half in Canada and half in American New York state...

I am very sorry to hear of your friend, yes I have seen her in a several of your videos. Memorial Day is not just about those who served and died during wartime, it is about those who have served in the armed forces and died even years later. It is about the sacrifice they have all made being away from home, family, friends, loved ones. A lot of the bikers that you had seen are in fact veterans themselves, probably Vietnam Vets, there to pay their respects to their Brothers in Arms. For them as for any soldier it doesn't matter what war they served, they all experienced the same sacrifice, just some never came back. Memorial Day, for me, I am going to try and visit my dad, he served in the Korean war and is buried at Riverside National Cemetery (Arlington of the West). He did not die on the battlefield but in his own bed, in his own home next to the woman he had been married to for over 65 years. He led a good and great life, but made it home to raise a family.
