@@driftmouse_official fast doesn't mean better, lots of people playing fast while sounding like absolute shit. I'll take slow and consistently on time all day
Yoooo Im self taught, mostly learning from watching other drummers on platforms like RUclips, but I really didn't know how helpful this technique would be.
Aye I was self taught for a long time but I just gotta put out there it’s only best until you get comfortable on your instrument and then you should get some kind of instruction. For me it was marching quads and it just opened my eyes to techniques I’d never even heard of and got me over plateaus of speed, creativity, and motivation. I respect the hell out of being self taught but everyone needs a mentor at some point. Keep on going man, you’re killing it
Well that's your problem this technique is very important it sounds like you need to actually do some homework and learn the fundamentals and not just copy what you see on a RUclips video lol so that way you have all the knowledge you create your own drum patterns and create your own sound I been a drummer for 42 years now hi hats is very important cause the hi hats is what keep tempo and patterns in tune
It's weird I taught myself drums over the last 15 years- and I managed to figure out like 95% of good technique by myself. I'm not perfect but it's amazing just what sheer time and dedication can do for ya!
It’s the moeller technique. When doing this, you alternate between playing with your wrist and with your arm, which is of course much more efficient than having either wrist or arm do all the work.
Yeah man! Evening mentioning the word "Moeller" would instantly make my younger students lose interest. Always worked like a charm when explaining it this way.
Haha it’s the Moeller technique here for sure. It just chases a lot of people away when they hear specific words, so I just broke it down in simple terms to get more reach for the video. (Which I’d just do for a short, and never and actual lesson)
@@brettclurdrums Hehehe yeah I know, I teach guitar and bass.... mentioning modes like Dorian or Phrygian always scares them. Then I just say "The major scale but start on the second or third note of the scale" Same principle.
I was lucky enough to go to a masterclass done by dom famularo who studied with the student of moller the man who developed this teqnique. I use this constantly and it is definetly one of the corner stones of drumming.
I always pride myself just a little bit about how I play specifically catered towards speed, and therefore over time of practicing I'm faster than most drummers, but when it really comes down to it... any jazz drummer would kick my ass in a competition.
Awesome! Shorts are great to get inspiration from, but 30 - 60 seconds is very hard to learn from. I'd suggest diving into a few elaborate lessons to help you guys. Have you seen Drumeo? Defeating learning curve if you play an e-kit. It's either closed/mid closed/or open. If you SLAP the edge, it's just a closed hit but louder. 🙃 Damn I miss my acoustic set up.
Yo that little bit right there was dope he did it right he gave you a quick demonstration but subliminally he made sure the hi-hats sound crispy clean and he gave you space to hear the high hats Krispy clean then he banged out a quick pocket groove slow and then sped up and cut it short and that was it 👊🧐🥁✨✨✨💾✨💙✨🧢🗽
For some reason my muscles do jot work that way, it's actually easier for me to play the same type of stroke with each hit. I just focus on staying lose, using any bit of rebound available and finger muscles in conjunction with my wrists.
Only problem is that it creates a different sound. Works good to do when you want to accent or change up a sound, or that's just the groove in general, but most groves will sound better if it is the same sound of hi-hat. Still a good speed/stamina builder, just don't get too attached to this method.
Even better..... Instead of hitting the middle and edge of the symbol, create a little pendulum on your index finger where the stick rests and bounce the stick up and down on that. Each time the stick bounces up, catch it and bring it back down for another hit and....repeat.
Slowly learned figured this out on my own. Self drummer of 7 years. Good tutorial, but I would've also mentioned it's a lot in the flick of the wrist to get it going faster
You don't need to switch between the edge and the top to do this, you could do both notes on the top or on the edge. It's all about the rocking motion.
Hi Brett, is it possible for you to make a video tutorial on how you tune your snare drum? It just sounds spot on each time. Would love to see your approach.
I had a substitute drum teacher show me this as the “punk” beat and it pretty much changed everything for me, and made me way more relaxed and efficient with my strokes
you need to practice it very slowly, its almost as if you gotta let your wrist go floppy. took me so long to master it even with my amazing drum teacher, i cant even explain it very well. good luck
Adding Sandford Moeller to the conversation. Seriously though, you get a much crisper sound playing all of your notes on the top surface of the hihat. Just replace your edge note with a note played using the shoulder of the stick on the hihat surface.

It's a 2-stroke moeller technique. Look up Moeller technique
I was gonna say its Moeller but someone already did. You arent a drummer until you have a good moeller stroke/understanding.

Dry and crispy! That’s how I like my Snares.
playing like that makes the sound more dynamic too

the guy explaining about the hit-hat and here I am in love with the sound of this wonderful box 😍

Called the Moeller technique, not just on the hi hat but to improve single stroke hand speed in general

boom the groove....
It’s called the ‘Moeller stroke’ and you can use it on drums as well 👍
indeed. it's more about the arm movement than the stick positioning people should focus on
@@johannesschmitz6370how can i get to play like james gadson? Is him use arm too? I quite confius to choose which what i have to use😩😭
@@mohddalibinzali1165 No. It's all in the wrist and fingers. Only use arms to switch positions around the other instruments of the drums.
that's what they call it but anatomically it is natural movement, nothing to do with moeller

I call it the shuffle
one thing that i have learned from watching drumming videos is that crocs are key
Correctly explained - Use the rebound bounce of the stick from the stick tip on the down stroke to create the second downstroke with minimal effort.
I feel like this video does more harm than good by not explaining more things in detail.

have you ever worked with push pull?
They don’t explain it but they are doing that here. Watch the arm, it moves half as fast as the notes
@@shibadoge5349 This is moeller, most of the push pull action is in the fingers which aren't really engaged in this video.
