Bruvs online tell me to focus on one thing at a time so I feel I can’t do character design until I finish this 4 year long expenditure on Anatomy to THEN move onto clothing.
You can go back and forth. All of these concepts relate to each other, so when you learn some anatomy, try incorporating that in character design. Then when you find your character design is lacking or there’s a body part you’re not comfortable with, go back to anatomy.
A method that might be more satisfying for you then is to do it all. Practice character design, but while you're doing that, look up references for anatomy to make your poses and characters. It will be a slower process and probably better for projects, but it might be more rewarding for you. Also, if you aren't enjoying just grinding away at a specific thing, take breaks and make sure to do things that are fun for you. As well as experiment with how you learn and keep track of how it makes you feel. Try to find what ways of learning play into you and your lifestyle the best. For example, a structured schedule devoted to specific topics vs. a wing it and learn as you want to draw the thing approach. Books vs. Online tutorials, communal learning vs. learning by yourself, etc.
No, the only thing you "need" to get good at first is the fundamentals, but even then you can still practice drawing characters and design and stuff for fun
Go back and fourth, tbh u also need to draw what u like, learning anatomy is ur study it’s not ur product, it will make your product better but still it’s not ur product, so keep on producing your product because that’s also a skill(and it can in fact improve your character designs and help u in long run). You can spend more time on anatomy if u want but still do what u like for example if u like character designs then do them, if u like story then write it, if u like funny comics then make funny scripts stuff like this is important.
One thing id like to add is that character design... Is basically the same as creature design. If you wanna get better at either, practice a bit of the other and try to learn from that as well! I used to make Fakemon designs when i was little, so i have that "what if i tried out this stupid thing" mentality when designing a character already in my mind, same with combining two diff refs into one. Try out different things! Practice environmental storytelling by making a small background! Practicing these kinds of things will make you better at conveying information in a visual way.
looks awesome, i will use this for practice, the only thing I would change to the design is make his clothes look a bit damaged or dirty, for someone who is escaping from his country and is constantly stealing stuff and carrying it everywhere he cannot stay clean for long, maybe make his shirt brownish or with a couple of holes near the book area, still pretty good
If you went with the eye design on the tome the eye could be magically floating *above the belts* to show just how powerful it is that it can project through solid material!!
First time here: I think the way you tackle these videos is very approachable, and you're also telling a bit of a story aloung the way. Your an excellent teacher, not everyone can make material this approachable. Also very well edited lol
THANK YOU ! Right when I was struggling to find an answer to a feedback I've gotten about my webtoon's character's design looking all the same... I didn't knew where to beging in order to get better and expand my visual library beyond "taking rerences and putting them on a character". Time to get into a character designing challenge I guess ! I've got a whole cast to design again + all my previous OCs :D
i never rly comment on youtube videos but MAN i gotta say, you're probably the artist that i've recently followed that makes me so inspired to really get stuck into character design bc its something i've loved for sooo long but have been so hesitant to go into heavy cause of making bad designs. this video has made me feel so motivated to go back to my characters and re-design them and learn more about how to improve them. ty for sharing what you've learned and for showing all the work you do to get to the designs and the art that youre proud of!!!
I really liked how it turned out. I took a bit of a different route with that character: first of all, he gives off a reckless bard vibes. I think it's his haircut and the way he wears that shirt. I also took notice of the tattoo on his hand, not a common thing with scholars. So I decided to double down on that bard-ish scholar aesthetic. First of all, I would make the collar of his shirt stand up. Give it a little triangular shape (but not fully triangular, mirroring his haircut, that looks a bit messy, but elegant at the same time). Then I'd roll his left sleeve up a bit more, to emphasise his tattoo. Maybe the tattoo is used to cast magic, or something like that. I'd give it a spiral design (symmetrical one can also work, but I want it to be more chaotic) with more occult-ish looking symbols, it would go nice with the Universe-ending tome. Maybe add a little trinket to his pants to make them a bit more interesting. Some fetish or an amulet hanging down from his belt on a long rope, perhaps? Or a rope with feathers attached to it through the whole length. And yeah, the book and scroll holsters, maybe he's even having two books on one hip, hanging down one after another. So, in the end my goal would be to make him wear that scholar-ish clothing, but also giving it more elements of recklessness, for which he might have been expelled.
When you brought up the concept of a huge backpack with books in it, I immediately thought of bookcape... Like a literal cape with a bookshelf in in...
Ty Pikat for always being such a great help. I'm currently Making a character for a series, and your videos always help me want to improve on the things I hate to do! So ty :D
I think currently one of my problems right now is feeling like I need to worldbuild a ton in order for an OC's backstory to make sense, since they're situated in a very specific context.
I think I would've leaned more into his relationship with this cursed book. the worried expression and hands is good, but I would've made him more crouched or hunched over and more frustrated or vexed by the book. maybe the book is whispering to him or cackling at his plight. maybe the book is a character too, something like sukuna in jjk. perhaps the book is heavy because of the knowledge inside and the more he learns from the book, the lighter it becomes. so maybe at first he's hunched over because of the weight but as he faces his fears and reads more from it, it becomes physically lighter, similar to how only thor can wield his hammer but it's impossible to lift for others. also others mentioned making his clothes a lil more disheveled like his face I think would also tell more story about the character.
