Ideally, IMO, the best situation is where you need to fly privately for a business or your own company. That gives you the ability to write off using your own private General Aviation airplane and you'll get the added benefit of feeling like you've won in life. How many people can be PIC of their own complex GA aircraft and write off most or all of the expense?

As a flight instructor I feel this covers how i feel quite a bit. One minor detail could be added. We can have 3-5 students over a 14 hour day and make less than 8 hours pay. The beforehand scheduling process and prep / preflight before each lesson is not considered payable work in our field. And there are often limit on how much a pilot can work in one day. It seems like the solution is to just not pay them for half the day.

For those that ask if this career is worth it; It’s not the perfect career by any stretch of the imagination, but most if not all pilots would do it all over again. If you do it for the money it will suck the soul out of your body but if you are passionate about it you will love it, company policies and crew scheduling need not apply in the former statement. As a professional pilot, I suggest people to get their private Pilot license first, have fun and enjoy flying and you wont get crippling debt. And if You don’t want to incur even the cost of a private pilot license, just take a discovery flight and get it out of your system.

This is accurate in some places, long haul pilots often do 10+ hours flights and as a result suffers from jetlag. However, it is not realistic that they have to fly back the next day already, usually pilots get to rest for a day or two if their shift was long enough (most pilots are not allowed to be on duty for more than 14 hours), also the 100k bill for training is quite accurate, but there are also much less expensive training schools (depending on the country)

This must really depend on the airline you’re working with, can’t really tell if it is actually this rough in the USA.
Having my both parents working for the Finlands largest airline company Finnair, most of these things were accurate but in an exaggerated sense.
Most crew hotels are 5 stars, minimum rest hours after long flights are mandated by laws and are usually several days in nice locations (in case of long flights), beverages and food are free for pilots, there’s definitely enough time to rest well, and when it comes to the airport security procedures, almost always they have their own lane to get through them quickly.
But like said, I don’t have any experience on how it is in the states. Also the wages here are nowhere near as high as in America.

From what I’ve heard, regional or short haul pilots have it a little easier. I went to an open house event at a flight school where they gave us an introduction and at least here in Denmark it’s possible to get a job as a pilot that’s basically just a regular 9-5 where you end up at the airport you’re based at so you get to go home every day after work. Sounds pretty cool. They also told us about how long haul pilots have this exact experience you brilliantly showcased in this video.

The European carriers seem to definitely lag behind in the work rules that protect the American pilots, hopefully they catch up

It’s certainly easier on the body, and you’ll get to sleep in your own bed most nights. However you get paid much less, fly way more takeoffs and landings, and in general short haul flights are more preparing for less flight time. On many airlines, short haul flights will touchdown, unload, and in 40 minutes be back in the air with passengers and fuel. It’s not the best environment for a pilot. It’s most likely why the Ryanair/Spirit airlines bad landing stereotype is around, as doing 8 landings in one day is going to make you care much less about how gentle you are.

😂nice story, being a pilot myself.. its actually quite accurate. Huge loans, hours of study, tests and checkrides and pilots with low hours find it hard to secure work. Its worth it in the end but yeah not glamorous

Dang. That sucks. I’m a pilot for an American based airline and I love my schedules. I don’t have any of the problems you have. Granted, I’m at a regional, but even without the super high pay, life is good.

I used to work at the airport. Nice place to dumpster dive! Found a lot of booze and weed over the years. One time I even found a brand new Pendleton blanket someone left behind. Coworkers and pay definitely sucked though. If you need a job, airports hire anyone.

@@503punxoioioi9 I loved working at the airport. Always a high vibe. Except for the management. Always cranky. Would see heaps of celebrities and yes, found a couple bags of weed that were obviously tossed into gardens before entering security.
