"Fly him back in the chopper"-??!! I think not. He could interfere with the pilot and make the chopper crash, or possibly bump/shove the other officer out. He is going down for 3 murders and has nothing to lose. No, u sit him down in the dirt and wait for a ground unit while watching him carefully.
The killer says "In my business you're either clever or you're dead." Then turns his back on the wife in a kitchen. She could have whacked him over the head with a frying pan.
The guy offered no danger: he was shackled with his hands behind him, was wounded, and the two guys left and right of him were professional cops, one of them with a gun. They were strapped to their seats, too, so "pushing them overboard", as some other poster suggested was out of the question.
At 14:57, the hostage with the box of groceries hears the chopper, but the "deranged" criminal inside the house doesn't. Must still be deaf from the 3 gunshots of the previous evening. Later, we see the lunatic killer is very neat; he puts his tie and coat on before dinner. Nice manners. And he certainly got his revenge on Mathews for capturing him, making him bend over to pick up that semi-auto he threw on the ground. That'll show 'em!
That's the only weakness in this episode. The gun on the ground posed no risk, and bending over to pick it up might have given the crook a chance to pull a second gun, which Dan couldn't have known Larkin didn't have. In fact, Larkin's surrender was suspiciously meek. I wouldn't trust him for a nano-second. Apart from that, this is a robust episode. Too many people here wax lyrical on how they would have behaved in a much bolder way than Dad, incapable of wearing Dad's shoes, and from the safety of their keyboards. Yes, if Dad HAD some martial training, he might have tried something in the various opportunities that the crook gave him, but an ordinary man (in 1957, to boot) would not dare risk his daughter's and wife's integrity, not to mention his own....
I remember this one as a 6 year old like I just saw it yesterday. Especially the scene where Dan Matt pretends to be the dad walking in with the firewood.
Except it doesn't. It's true use is to stop fiends like him, just as Mathews and his men used revolvers. Another "feely" guy who can't use logic or think.

I have their design descendant piece in the Beretta 92F as well. I was born in 1980 so I'm barely outside the millennial generation, by one year.
So, the guy with the gun has the Dad to pull over, then gets out of the car by himself and stands in the road. Perfect time for the Dad to tell the Mom and Daughter to get down then roar away while the crook is standing in the road. Folks take on a "Victim" mentality instead of thinking how to escape or overcome the bad guy. Can't let fear control you..it's hard but you gotta keep a cool head.
There are many "copter" episodes if HP, that is because in the 1950's helicopters were are new novelty for police departments to use--the latest tool against criminals.
In Highway Patrol, the copter always made its appearances in consecutive episodes. I heard that this was because it became available when filming of Whirlybirds had finished ahead of schedule, and they wrote the copter into the story, or even put a whole new episode together, judging by the thinness of the plots. The test of this is what useful part the copter actually plays in the stories, and the answer is little or none. Still, the sight of Brod cramming himself into the cabin with his right foot hanging out is priceless, but describing him as the latest tool against criminals is unkind. "New novelty" is a tautology.
Copters were such the NEW thing -- and then HP hugely popularized them with the folks that FUNDED police departments. Until then, copters were so expensive that departments would rather lay on ten more cars than opt for a flying patrol. It wasn't all that long before it was realized that copters were MUCH more effective WRT traffic... not just fleeing felons.
Every notice that cars on HP regularly show up being driven on the left side of highways and back roads 1:50 ? Must be a lot of Englishmen in the cast.
