lightingbug, your comments are well said. This was a tremendous show ... and, in spite of a lot of changes in the past years ... it holds up very well. Additionally, the show was produced for very little money, yet it had excellent writing and gave a lot of actors their first real chance.
This is one of the best episodes of the HWY PATROL series. I love how Crawford handles the ending like it's just another day at the office: he tells Ken to join him for a smoke. Crawford and this show are LEGEND. Definitely some of the best American television ever produced. Thanks so much for posting!
An unarmed Mathews calls a crook with a loaded gun a punk, then knocks the gun out of his hand, takes the guy outside to the cops, and has a cigarette. A great show! I waited 30 years to see this episode again.
Over the course of this series, the big 3 automakers clamored to have the producers use their vehicles as patrol cars.. Originally, GM furnished a fleet of Buicks. Then Ford provided Mercurys. Then Chrysler provided Dodge Coronets. Nothing better than free advertising.
Free advertising? they never mention the makes or models and one of the cop cars was a Plymouth in this episode . You're right though there are some nice old cars, they were new at the time though. see the Plymouth at 16.00-16.14
It's such a refreshing feeling watch something that's clean decent and the good guy always wins total opposite of today your scum you go far you always win but one thing I don't understand from beginning to the end every single episode they mentioned blue four-door sedan red 56 convertible why do they never ever mention the car like red 59 Chevy sedan I never understood that
The magic movie revolver strikes again. 1 in the diner person. 2 through the door way. 3 more out in the diner with Mathews dodging. 1 over Mathews shoulder. That was the magic bullet since the revolver holds 6. He's still holding the gun like its loaded. Gets his final 8th shot of a 6 shot revolver off and Mathews took him with a hat, LOL.
As I've always said, Dan would be nuthin' without my boy, Ken! ❤😊 He's always made him look good, and I LOVED IT when Dan called for him, epic request!! 😅❤💕🥰
They really used a bar and grill for this episode but the director had to make the change.it took dan 20 takes to tell the guy on the floor stay there don't move.must of had real props.he was still buzzed on that brave juice when he went after the crook with his hat.that's why he had sit down.original script had him order a shot of whiskey.
Don't ever try and tell me Dan didn't have guts. I couldn't have started the guy down like that. Not in a million years. These old timers had real cojones.
So he walks out to the car to radio for an ambulance but uses the phone under the counter to call the station. OK explain how that is the best way of doing things?
No sense of urgency in his walk despite the emergent situations. He told the wounded man on the floor "don't move," LOL. He's shot, wounded...he's not going to move
fyi the Google Map coordinates of the diner are 34.077993, -118.242136. At the time, this was the intersection of Effie Street and Reposa Street in Los Angeles. Nowadays this is in the middle of one of the parking lots for Dodger Stadium.

"We got a dandy....I need help...join me" couldn't have worded it better. Just love good dialogue! Many of these final year episodes were better written than in some of the older ones. Normally it's Mathews and maybe one other unit collaring the crooks at the end but we have a more realistic half dozen or more outside. This is one of only 2 episodes that were partially filmed at night (the other being "Father Thief in 1955) Crawford is at his best here, never missing a line or flubbing one. AQlso dig the jukebox that has the bubbling liquid (not visible here)
Didn’t anyone know first aid back then. A bit of pressure applied to that stomach wound could mean the difference between life and death. Seen the same thing on multiple episodes.
Yeah things were sketchy. Another episode he found out heroin was heroin by eating some. So yeah.... first aid may have been to poke him with a stick and pack the wound with mud lol.
First aid in those days was crude even when the ambulance came. The funeral homes ran that business and used their hearses as ambulances. They did not have the equipment we have come to expect.
At 1:40, this is a 1959 Chevy. This probably he year filmed w/o looking at Roman Numerals at end. For those young ones who have no concept how to convert: MCM=1900 LIX=59 therefore = 1959 for the Chevy.
I like how he’s basically like “ hey criminal!!! Here’s exactly what we have in numbers and our exact plan “ so yeah that wouldn’t be smart these days.
I love Broderick, and I love this show!!! ... That said, I am well aware of his alcoholism problem ... does he seem especially unsteady on his feet and even slurring his words, in this episode, or is it me???
The diner owner's wife "Doris" was played by Virginia Arness, who was married to James Arness (Matt Dillon) for 12 years. She died of a drug overdose in 1977, which was her second (this one successful) attempt at suicide.
Suit and tie, California heat and 4-60 air conditioning.........I remember it well ! (four those that might not now, 4-60 ac was four windows down at 60 miles an hour.)
The crooks in this show dress nicer than most business people today. "Let's see what sport jacket goes best with this shirt. Big robbery today Want to look good."
There is a line around 10:48 that throws me for a loop. Matthews says, join me, I need help Father. Is it possible that William Boyette is an Episcopalian Priest in real life, and the writers were making some sort of allusion to that? It would be odd for the head of the Patrol to otherwise refer to a Sgt. as "Father"
I've seen that hill as well as the diner being used numerous times in other episodes. And probably the same '59 Chevy as well. Dan Mathews took some mighty big chances in this drama, that's why he's "The Man". Funny thing though, that despite two people getting hit at close range by gunfire I didn't see any blood around place. Ain't that peculiar.
Everybody knows the thug would have been so gassed out so quick he would not have time to think, to shoot, just rush out and be dealt with. Even though the shot diner had an even chance of survival, the thug still went to prison. His thigh bone was damaged and he probably lost that leg from the wait for treatment. A career criminal gets no sympathy from the State no matter what the City says.
I counted 8 shots from the punk's revolver!🤔hmmm And why do they never state the make of the suspect's car? 1959 green sedan. It's also a Chevy Impala, isn't that pertinent information?
Milk men, bus drivers, bell hops, etc. All wore them like that. It was more casual. Military men (especially sailors) sometimes wore them like that too.

I've never seen this episode. Superb. I love the cars. Mechanical hand brakes and 3 on da tree.
Dan can handle a gun starting 8:40 , gun in left hand opens door, gun in right hand. Grew up with this show and still love these episodes!

How Cool! My 1st car was a 1959 Fury. I've never seen it as a Police car.
The owner takes a gut shot from a 38 spl at point blank range and then gets up and walks away with his wife. That’s one tough guy!
I never saw a show that featured so many roadside diners. and they never had customers.
its the same roadside diner used in many episodes.
Was a more civilized country back then. People had time to sit down and eat, no damn fast food. And look how people dressed.
How many different diners has this building posed as?.
Saved by the Fedora , that's why he wears one.
Fought off a gunman with guile and a fedora. What a man, Mathews!

@Jeffrey Bone Yep, a sitting duck.
Old Dan looks like he's ready to two step when the crook has the drop on him!
I’m glad Matthews wasn’t calling an ambulance for me. I’d be in trouble the way he walked to the car.

The guys on the ground bleeding to death and Dan says, "Don't move!",
" You fool, you didn't know about my itchy trigger finger!".

It's not like they are in a city. They were in BFE.
