Hey Mitch, I am going to take off my tractor owner hat and put on my retired science teacher hat. A Google search took me here: " PVC contains dangerous chemical additives including phthalates, lead, cadmium, and/or organotins, which can be toxic to your health. These toxic additives can leach out or evaporate into the air over time, posing unnecessary dangers to people." So probably not best to do this heating indoors . You need a garage oven with plenty of ventilation! Cheers!

PVC is a huge class of plastics available in many grades, and used for many things. While I would be hesitant to use general PVC and heat it to the soft phase in the house, or the shop, I would be reasonably comfortable using an National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) certified water pipe. Not sure there is nothing which might be harmful in an NSF certified pipe which could come out under heat, I am the NSF pipe will not contain lead, cadmium, phthalates, or any thing which could be water soluble, and cause me harm.

I know this comment is a year old but PVC can and is used as potable water piping occasionally.
Usually in the form of CPVC which has a higher chlorine content to make it more resistant to temperature and pressure.

When I was in highschool my parents went out of town for a week. I decided that it would be good to bake spray paint onto some engine parts in the oven. And, that it would work really well to run some parts through the dish washer with a bunch of extra detergent.
In the middle of this, the folks came home two days early. Mom through the predicate blue fit. Dad, bought her a new dishwasher, and oven. I had to install the old ones in the garage. Dad thought baking on the paint, and washing parts in the dishwasher were really great ideas.

This is a great idea! I just scoured the internet for a chainsaw scabbard for my 24" bar. I finally found one and ordered it. But, my point is that I had to wait a week to get it and spend the money on it when I already had a length of PVC pipe hanging around looking for a job. Other alternative heating methods include a BBQ grill outdoors or a wood stove if it's big enough to lay the pipe on top. I actually have an old oven in my garage for such projects as home powder coating and preheating parts for welding or slipping in bearings etc. Great Idea that has me thinking about 100 other ways to employ this technique!

Just a couple ideas to think outside the box. You might still be exposed to the chemical gassssses with these 2 methods, but you won't have to use your indoor oven.
    1. You could use a very large grill and just put some aluminum foil over the grilling rack. Of course, do this on low heat. The problem would be finding a grill that is large enough
    2. Use a heat gun and just keep running it up and down the sides while applying some squeezing pressure
I did the same research as Peacefield did below. Yup, plenty of toxics inside so best not to do it indoors and should avoid breathing in the fumes. ☠🤢😷💀☠

If you stop the PVC before it burns you should be fine.
My source: A PVC factory blew up close enough to my friend's house they were told to shelter in place and turn off Heating and or AC.
Literally tons of the stuff burned for days and so far there have been no long lasting health problems for the community.
Well, a few workers died in the initial blast sadly.
Since the original KABOOM there haven't been health issues.
Just getting the PVC squishy isn't going to release the toxic elements held in the middle of the plastic much like creamy nougat in a candy bar.
If you actually screw up and burn your pipe, scrape ALL of that out and open some windows, doors whatever you have to get some fresh air in.
If you find yourself doing this regularly some home centers sell the appliances they pick up on installs pretty cheap. I know Menards does this.
Assuming you have 220 V in your shop (I know you do for that nice Hobart Handler) set the new to you. used oven up in your shop.
Then you can dry paint, melt plastic , preheat metals & freshen up old welding rods to your heart's content without risking the ire of your wife.
BTW have you heard of Paul and Kathy Short in Newfoundland?
They make cool add ons for Kubota tractors.

Interesting option. You would rather piss your wife off by using her oven/cooktop to cook PVC pipe than just buying two pieces of flat 1/4” ABS from the store. That makes no sense. Remember this saying “ Happy wife, Happy life”. Repeat that mantra every morning. 😂
