This was the absolute golden area of American motorcycle road racing. Both Rainey and Schwantz came on the scene after the great Eddie Lawson won 4 world titles. I’m partial to Schwantz purely because he was from a small town right outside the city I was born in. My dad had been a semi-pro dirt track racer in the 60s and was absolutely insane for all things Motorcycle racing. I distinctly remember when Rainey had his accident. I remember to kept asking my dad when he would race again and I couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t ever again. I got the pleasure to meet Kevin Schwantz several times and my impression of him was extremely favorable. He was very personable to young fans and put the the time in. He had a relative that owned a dealership only a mile from my house (Hurst Motorcycle) and he would be there frequently to meet fans. The United States has fallen so far from these glory days in terms of the quality of riders produced.
I am not partial... Schwantz is the GOAT... I started watching GP500 in 1987, just before Schwantz came full time (he was doing just some gp's in 86 and 87) and he was at another level from anyone else... The Suzuki was his weakness... his ability and control at extreme conditions were amazing... I keep watching his races again and again... I am sure if he had a Honda or Yamaha,,, he would have a lot of titles... Rainey would have 0 and Lawson would have less 1 or 2... and Doohan would show up after Kevin's retirement... His Macau 88 victory is at "super-hero" level...
I live right down the road from Paige. I am disappointed that there are no signs claiming Paige as the hometown of a world champion. There should be a prominent sign displayed on 290 and on 21. If I owned property there, I would have a huge mural on my barn with Kevin’s image.
Nota: Los comentaristas excepcionales.
I remember very well in England this was on the BBC and Murray Walker went absolutely nuts when Schwantz overtook Rainey around the outside at the Melbourne Loop. Great days!
Schwantz was unstoppable in this period, his skill in late braking was incredible. If you could outbreak him, you would be on the floor... Two legends at work. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Favourite time of Gp bikes , Bikes going sideways coming out the corners leaving those long dark lines behind , especially with Schwartz , Rainey and Doohan riding beyond the limits of those bikes , loved it then Modern stuff bores me now !!
Revvin Kevin, a brilliant rider and the King of late braking. Him, Rossi, Agostini, Barry Sheene and Mike Hailwood are the most watchable motorcyle racers ever. Ricky Carmichael was pretty astonishing on the dirt though, it has to be said.
Maybe you've never heard of Valentino Rossi? Or Marc Marquez? The only championship Schwantz ever won was because Rainey was permanently injured. But yeah, he was the greatest. Ever.
How the fuck you gonna abuse a 3x champ on the brakes like that?! Not to mention that shit @1:58. Kev was ON IT that day! Great track.......damn shame they don't race there anymore.
@@pabloperez4063 I would argue that when it came to beating Kevin, Wayne wasn't riding for points. Fuckin' HATED losing to Kevin. At that point Kev was still in the hunt for the title.

Lawson, Gardner, Spencer, Mamola, Doohan, Schwantz, Rainey, Kosinski, Sarron, Abe.
Absolutamente de acuerdo, aquello era verdadero espectáculo.

Its been 32 years now since this iconic duel between Schwantz vs Rainey at Donington...
I don't know what is more enjoyable. Schwantz or the commentaries. 😂

Great Race, well done Kevin !!!!!
This one is just as good or better than Hockenheim. The pass on the outside is sick.
The tension fell from my face when I saw that.

God Schwantz was my favorite rider but I respect all the others as well.
I was there that year got myself a signed Kevin Schwartz t shirt still have it ...good times
Fantastico Kevin 🇺🇸

Kevin Schwantz! Late braking master of the universe!

Is it only me or did Schwants snub Kochinski completely after the race?
