    PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT:
    We’ve talked about this impending news for over a year, and speculated on it for just as long. Now, finally, this project has a concrete title and release date. But it’s the press release that we really want to dig into.
    First, the opening sentence packs a punch: (quote from press release)
    Disney - the behemoth that it is - is a fit for The Beatles. Not that they’re the only game in Hollywood, but partnerships here could go far and wide. I’m not saying we’ll see a Beatles experience at Disney World anytime soon, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the relationship evolves beyond basic distribution. Just look at what they’re doing with new Star Wars content on Disney Plus.
    The next thing to note here is the release date “in the United States and Canada on September 4, 2020, with additional details and dates for the film’s global release to follow.” This date syncs with the fall timeline I mentioned in the last few episodes of Beatles news, including what is apparently the official companion book, which Amazon has slated for a release on October 6th. Check out a link to this in the description.
    The press release says the film will be in theaters nationwide, which hopefully means wide availability. Not just arthouse cinemas, which was the only option for many people to see the Ron Howard Beatles film Eight Days a Week. Also, I find it interesting - but not surprising - that there are US and Canadian release dates, but no others for now. Distribution - with rights and logistics - isn’t simple, I get it. But you would’ve thought they at least could’ve gotten a UK date nailed down. I mean… The Beatles are British.
    Now let’s look at some technical details about the film itself: (quote from press release)
    If you haven’t seen any clips from “They Shall Not Grow Old,” you should. The technical quality is unbelievable. And it sounds like we can expect big things with the picture quality in the new film. Admittedly, Jackson and crew are not dealing with World War I era footage, but as I’ve mentioned in previous videos - the footage we’ve typically seen from the Let It Be movie is rather dark and dreary, and lends to the kinda downer vibe felt in that film.
    Anyway, coming out of this press release for a second, Rolling Stone quotes Dhani Harrison about his impressions from the film. “It’s so ridiculously amazing looking - I could see John Lennon’s fillings.” “I emailed Peter yesterday and said, ‘This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.'”
    As for the music, if you’re a fan of the recent Beatles box sets, it’s another good sign that Giles Martin and Sam Okell are part of the team for the new Get Back film. And their involvement is a nod - or maybe it’s just a hope - that we can expect music being released outside of the film. New soundtrack? Remix? Box set?
    The press release then includes those fluffy quotes, and goes on to briefly describe the original Let It Be film… and then contrasts it with the Peter Jackson project: (quote from press release)
    This is the next great bit of new info here in this press release: we’ll see the rooftop concert in the film! However, the way this is worded is a little unclear. My gut reaction was to read that the complete rooftop performance will be included in the film. And I’m cautiously optimistic that that’s what’s happening. But I think you could read this sentence as: “the new doc shines light on more of the performance.” Regardless, I think it’s inevitable we’ll see the full gig, even if it’s just an extra.
    By the way, Apple - we’re still waiting on an official release of the Shea Stadium concert.
    The last bit of noteworthy info in the press release is that “A fully restored version of the original "Let It Be" film will be made available at a later date.”

And when you mentioned the wait for a Shea Stadium release I totally agree (especially since I didn't get to see it as part of 8 Days in theaters). Out of curiosity, have you heard the line-in recordings of the Shea concert? They're on a CD boot titled "The Beatles and the Great Concert at Shea." Wondering how they’ll turn this into pure profit for them while not giving us Beatles fans what we want. I want to see the Let It Be sessions for what they really were, even the bad things because that’s what happened at the time.

    I enjoy your vids, Lance. I stream them to my TV and listen through full-range stereo speakers. I’m hearing a lot of plosives (e.g. popping p’s, t’s and k’s) that probably aren’t noticeable through most computer speakers. You might consider rolling off at around 100hz on your mic channel. Keep up the good work!

    • @FabFourArchivist
      @FabFourArchivist  4 года назад

      Thank you! I really appreciate feedback like this.
      Honestly, I am kind of disappointed with the plosives happening with this mic (SM7B) - I figured the standard foam screen would be enough. I shouldn’t need a pop filter. Think the EQing will do the trick? (If I was singing I’d work on technique, but that’s hard for long stretches of dialogue.)

    • @perrybarton
      @perrybarton 4 года назад +1

      FabFourArchivist You’re welcome! And yes, EQ will help a lot. It’s just a matter of finding the right frequency. Listen on good speakers or full-range headphones, find a section with a popping plosive, and vary the cutoff frequency (below which you’ll be rolling everything off) until you’re at the point just below where you start to hear the natural low end of your voice begin to disappear. You can also experiment with the slope of the curve. A steeper slope can be effective for this situation. Let your ears tell you what works best.

    Great news. Thing about a new album release is that this wasn't their most motivated period. So even if some new cuts come out, they will probably at the level of, or lower than the level of the Let It Be album itself. And that just wasn't their best work. I missed the presence of George Martin on this record and his absence can be felt if you compare Let It Be with their other records. Thanks for the update!

    they ought to take the entire 50 hours of film footage from the Let It Be sessions and release it all as an ongoing series, (like Breaking Bad....Let It Be...Bad?) then we could marathon watch it, they could name the series and/or the episodes with names like: Shall we Get Back to Downtown Abbey Road?, Let It Be Beatles, Terror at Twickenham (studios) (maybe too dramatic). But to release all 50 hours as an ongoing series would be a boom for long time Beatles fans. Of course the bumper music could be different for every episode. Perhaps the opening song from before Let It Be and the closing credits would have a song from after Let It Be. Casual fans need to know the difference between the Beatles finished products from the unfinished rough stuff during the Let It Be sessions.

      I really don't think it's anything besides distribution at this point. It could go somewhere else in the future, but we've got to keep in mind that Apple Corps is notoriously controlling (over the last 30 years anyway).

    As a New Zealander, I have been pleased to witness Mr. Jackson's success. He seems to have done well mining his youthful cultural experiences (King Kong, Tin Tin, LOTR, The Hobbit etc.) This project seems to follow in that tradition.
    I look forward to seeing what he makes of The Beatles.

    It sucks that it is going to be in theaters , I was hoping it would be a home video release. I'm disabled and going to the theater is not an option for me. In 1970 I seen the original Let it be movie in th theater. I watched it close to 10 times. My mother's friend and her husband owned a movie theater, so I watched it for free.

    Hey Y'all, just one note.. Palease remember that Disney has a very long history of distorting, altering, and just plain forgetting the Truth.. They have a Gut Instinct to Colorize over the reality of the subject matter, and although I'm sure the film will be a Celebration of Everything Beatles, I really don't want to watch John, Paul, George, and Ringo dancing with Mickey Mouse and Goofy.. Let us hope that A Splendid Time is Guaranteed For All ! Love, Lary

    Not even talking about the conceptional content, I hated much of the technical side to "They shall not grow old". Yes, he slowed the footage down to its original 16fps recording speed, but why did he have to do it with those stupid modern, glitchy, digital slo-mo filters that add a lot of artifacts and make all the motions look like cheap 1950s TV? Why color it all artificially in crayola colors? I already didn't like to see the latter on "Eight Days a Week".
    Colorization of moving footage always looks like crap, usually. The only exception to that that I've recently seen was an AI colorization of clips from the old Indian film "Pather Panchali" (or somesuch) here on YT. They did use the same crappish TV movements filter, but at least the colors looked surpringly genuine. Like a historical two-color film or like an old 1970s or 1980s telecine from a worn-out release print made by contact printing, but a lot more natural and genuine than on "Eight Days a Week" or "They shall not grow old".

    Is it me or do we all find this period really enigmatic. So much of what i have heard during this period is lifeless, badly played, they just seemed bored with no energy and were not playing well. Then bam they go on the roof and sound great. How did they do that? Just adrenaline? I am hoping they found strong band performances in all the footage. Never understood the crap boolegs and then the slamming roof top performace it doesnt make sense
