I thought there couldn't be a better video of the restoration of a WW2 French sword (24 million views). But you've outdone yourself! Unbelievable, just unbelievable!
Ok....I admit....I'm impressed. I think this is my favorite one so far. You see these knife restores and they all use wood...I've never seen epoxy/resin handles...love this!!!
My 7 year old and I look very your videos. He is on the autism spectrum and recently told me.he wants to fix old metal things. So we found an old rusty pipe wrench in our garage and we have started to slowly restore it. So far a good vinegar soak and some scrubbing with a wire brush. Hoping to work with him on it more this week. It's been great finding an interest he has through watching your channel and has given us another way to connect with him. ❤
The metal isn't turning white; it's turning the color of bare metal. It appears brighter because you see the contrast between the freshly sandblasted portions and the raw, rust pitted portions. Also, the deformations and crevices in the metal allow the grit to scour tiny scratches all over but it's not smooth enough to achieve a mirror polish so what you're left with is metal that's clean enough to reflect light evenly but not smooth enough to reflect it perfectly, if that makes sense. It happens with any metal item that's sandblasted. Of course, the media that is used also makes a difference.
@ivanmit3366 oxidation varies upon the composition of the metal and the environment its in, but yes- that's why you see content creators applying oil to freshly blasted parts, to act as a moisture and oxygen barrier. The oil can easily be removed to apply the desired final finish.
@edwardsdarkmistress in a sense, yes; I'll admit I've not yet finished the video- because life happens- but unless he's hardened the metal or done something else to affect its structure, then it's obviously in a more brittle condition than when it was originally issued. That being said, it's very likely that this knife won't see anything remotely serious enough to stress the blade.
I also guess that all the microscopic crevices and pits left from the rusting helps scattering light in a way that makes it white (it's not uncommon for porous materials to look bright/white)
Besides the obvious expert craftsmanship, I am always stunned by the creativity of these works of art… how people get a picture in their mind of what COULD be versus what is.
YOU'RE BACK!!!! Sir, you were missed, seriously Also, as soon as I saw how crunchy that bayonet was with rust, I started clapping and screaming DUST RUST FOR THE KNIFE YESSSS
This video was well worthy the 4 month wait. One of my favourite restoration channel is back with new gadgets. First time I am seeing a magnetic stirrer. Much love from Rwanda 🇷🇼
Dude the fact that you turned something so beyond repair into something that is not only beautiful but incredibly functional???? That's beyond incredible 👏🏻🔥🖤 love your work so much
Recently I was talking to a friend of mine about most satisfying RUclips channels and yours came to mind. Turns out my mate is also subscribed to your channel! Shout out to Fré for having good taste too! Btw, thanks for being back, missed your craftsmanship! Keep up the good work!
Wow, that looked impossible to restore, and yet you turned it into art! Not only does that take mad skillz, but it also takes creativity and vision. Great work!
this is well tuned. Insane result. I like when people turn rust into gold. That's part of my job also in restoring laptops and give them second hand life. Happy to see the channel back with a new video
Very cool restoration - I really like the plating idea: the knife has so much character from all those interesting rust pits, but you don't want to to start rusting again. Plating is a great solution (and something different from cold blueing).
Typically, sand or grit blasting to remove oxides or coatings with abrasive media results in a very thin layer of metal removed, leaving behind a "rough" surface texture that consists of microscopic peaks and valleys. I believe the visual appearance of "white metal" is actually very fine (micro) particulate from the abrasive that is embedded in the valleys on the surface of the metal. If that helps
This restoration was very impresive and satisfying and i never think about how hard restoration is especially when you have to make your own parts. I love that you got a new video out and keep up the content
I have to admit that I wasn't going to watch this, thinking it was too far gone to be interesting... But I also have to admit that this was great! I'm so glad I did watch it!!!
Bruh this guy is magic I swear Because I’m still trying to figure out how that depression of a knife turns into what looks to be a weapon from heaven itself. In other words it’s beautiful and you did a wounderful job
You should use hydrophobic (i think i spelt it wrong) acid to remove the rust, its the best way to clean the tool but uh make sure to not leave it _too_ long.
That is some beautiful work. I wonder, though, how it would've looked had the hilt and pommel been gold and the blade been nickel plated. I really like the forged carbon fiber grib. I think it looks so much better than regular carbon fiber weave.
I like restoration videos and I don't like other restoration of knives but this is amazing. It is the best restoration of a knife that I have ever seen. Thank you and keep going. Waiting for a knife from the rust.
I am so thrilled that you’re back. Also, thank you for using that magnetic spinner tool, I’ve literally been thinking about how cool it would be to use that for rust removal.
I cant imagine how long these videos must take to make but you can tell how much precision and care go into each project i love the gold with the carbon fibre as well looks awesome 😅
your videos work bloth ways, as a day watch, completely focused super interesting at precision, calmliness, all that, and as a go to sleep relaxing videos, that even have that asmr part in them

Suggestion. Why not dip the whole thing in epoxy resin. All those pits and holes could make for a cool effect.

So does that mean that the sandblasting reveals true color of the metal? Does it change color pretty soon after with oxidation?
@ivanmit3366 oxidation varies upon the composition of the metal and the environment its in, but yes- that's why you see content creators applying oil to freshly blasted parts, to act as a moisture and oxygen barrier. The oil can easily be removed to apply the desired final finish.
I have additional question: with the holes in the knife, doesn’t mean the metal is compromised and could easily break?
@edwardsdarkmistress in a sense, yes; I'll admit I've not yet finished the video- because life happens- but unless he's hardened the metal or done something else to affect its structure, then it's obviously in a more brittle condition than when it was originally issued. Tysy was like, "Time to give shape to the blade" and I'm like, "What shape? What blade??" And it still came out looking amazing
The combination of rust pits, gold, and carbon fiber on the handle creates a stunning decorative piece that would look great on any shelf.
The handle is the best thing about the knife.
At first, I thought the whole thing would end up in your rust jar. A work of art, it turned out beautifully.
Everytime at the start of a restoration I think to myself. How do you even plan on fixing this? This is so beyond repair.

Outstanding and creative approach by incorporating the deep pitying as a feature. And I've never seen the gold effect like that before. Beautiful!
No squash were harmed in the making of this vid.... nevermind.
I'm glad you said transformation and not restoration. I was really impressed with the videography rather than the project itself.
