  • This video discusses what CTCSS/DCS tones and codes are and how to scan the output and input frequencies on a repeater to find out what tones are being used. This is the same regardless of what radio service you are using be it Ham Radio, GMRS, MURS, or FRS the concept and idea are the same. FRS can't legally transmit on repeaters but they can monitor the channel output. These continuous tone coded squelch or digital coded squelch tones make people thing they are keeping their conversation private which is just not the case. Anyone can listen to what you are saying with any tone you try to put in. You just aren't able to be bothered by them if they attempt to transmit without the same tone.

    Good vid,you now need to add CB S-NFM+ctcss/DCS.
    Terminology gets confusing with the name "privacy tones",I call them QRM quiet squelch as that is exactly what it does.
    We using them on CB FM band as al the new CB radios coming out since early 2024 have these facilities 👍

    Nice primer Mike! I'll just add that on a radio like the Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO or KG-916 GMRS, after the radio has searched and found a CTCSS/DCS tone/code, pressing Menu again before the menu times out will actually write that tone/code into either the RX or TX (or both) CTC or DCS menus, so you don't have to set it manually. I think you touched on that, but just wanted to make it clear how easy these features are on a higher-end radio. :)

      I think I accidentally did it and realized after the video thats what it did. I should have looked that up prior to recording, sorry. So far the KG-916 has been excellent in reliability and use. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    Suggestion for a future video: Compare range performance between a pair of FRS H/T Radios and a (similar) pair of MURS H/T Radios?

    • @Ham-Solo

      Oh that might be awhile since I have neither of those types of radios. So getting a pair of each would be the next step. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    What menu did you enter the DCS tone? TX-DCS or Rx-DCS once you scan from his handset? Thanks

    • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo  2 года назад +2

      If I’m following you I believe you’re asking when I scan for the tone the other person is using and discover it then where do I input that tone on my radio. If that is what you are asking then I will say you are scanning his transmission to the repeater before it actually opens the repeater and retransmits. So the tone you are looking for is the input tone or transmit tone that activates the repeater to open. When you program that tone in your radio it should be the TX-DCS tone. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    GMRS repeaters do not have te same frequency. The output of the GMRS repeater is lower.

    • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo  2 года назад

      Yes I know. 467.xxx for input and 462.xxx for receive. You can also do just straight simplex on the same frequency. For example channel 15 is 462.550 input and output. And repeater 15 is 467.550 input and the same output as simplex channel 15 462.550. So pretty sure I explained that in the video. Ham-Solo K0FYR WRMV759
