This channel is dedicated to the enjoyment of learning about amateur radio from a new comers point of view. There are many websites out there that seem to contradict each other or present information as if you already had an insider knowledge of the craft. I will bring the terms and ideas back to the basics and through discovery and setback attempt to get you the viewer to come on a journey.

Testing TidRadio Accessories in the mountains of Colorado.
Thanks to TidRadio for sending these two antennas and the speaker mic for me to test out. I had some distance difficulties with the small stubby antenna and the terrain I was in but feel that on a more flatter area it should have an okay range. The 15” whip antenna worked very well and I had no complaints on the speaker mic as well. All these accessories are interchangeable with different radio brands and models that have similar connectors.

My first time doing HF from my vehicle! A plan for inclement weather

After a couple of years of working on my activating Parks On The Air in every state, I decided it was time to get an inclement weather setup. Trying Fara-J GMRS Antenna with RG-8X Low-Loss Coax

On my first video using this Fara-J cloth antenna one of the viewers suggested that the RG-316 I was using was quite lossy and that a larger coax would probably work better. RG-8X showed the least amount of loss of the 4 choices and so I ordered a 25’ section with BNC connect...

Love it. My 6200 just arrived . Hey can you link that coax .quick search gave me nothing on hro.
I just received a UV9PX radio and have it set to Day 1 (yellow/black) screen mode. Haven't been able to test it out in bright sun just yet due to lousy weather. But I did notice this video is two years old, and have no idea if improvements to visibility have been made. On the other hand, all you really need to do is shield the screen with your hand or turn your back to the sun. Or am I missing something?
@@photog1529 I believe I do that in the video but can’t remember being that it is an older video. In bright sunlight none of that helped. I actually even hold the thing right up to my eyeball and still can’t see it when it’s full sunlight on any mode they have for the colors. I don’t believe he fixed the screen yet but I’m not sure. I really wanted it to work but unfortunately it was super difficult to see. I switched to a different radio after this test and sold these two radios mainly because of that problem. I hope it is corrected but I don’t think it is and I was going to use them outside quite a bit as I travel for work and wanted to take them along. Ham-Solo K0FYR

@@MrCofresipirate Nice. It’s a good radio for the price. Ham-Solo K0FYR
It would be nice to have a mic with good mic gain.
Overall it's a good video, with a few details it could have been very good, for example it would have been nice if the radios had the same settings like squelch and volume and then he had swapped the antennas, he had used the same mike/speaker on both radios to listen to the same broadcast... and the solo behind him that every now and then blinded you as soon as he moved!
That was cool to see that the satellite dish changed positions.

Just got a x6200 myself, to go with 2 G90’s and a 7300. New neighborhood is deed restricted, so getting creative with the antennas. So far, Chameleon mag loop works well, especially for FT8.

@@lostangeles4476 Thank you. Trying to be impartial so as not to just rubber stamp a product that may have issues. I really like the audio quality of the Wouxun radios and have ordered different ones after these but just with different screens to avoid this issue. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Thanks Mike!
I have a Kenwood D75A Tri bander,
@@ManuelPinner never tried that radio but I did just order a new superheterodyne Wouxun radio for 1.25m that does 5 watts from Better Safe Radio called the KG-UV7D. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Thanks! Order placed! 👍
Why not allow GMRS licensees to use a portion of 1.25 meters -- not all of it, just a collection of 15 or so simplex frequencies and 10 to 15 frequency pairs for repeater operation? I run my scanner non-stop on 1.25 m and WEEKS go by without hearing any activity. Better to let the GMRS folks use part of the band than to lose it entirely due to lack of use.
@@DankFarrik1138 that’s actually a good idea. Once we finally got our club 1.25m repeater on the air we use it every single day with a coffee chat for about an 1&1/2 hours each morning and at various times throughout the day. Ham-Solo K0FYR
This is hilarious. It seems like nit picking to me. There is a thing attached to your arms called a hand that can shade the screen if you are in direct sunlight. Here is a thought, move into the shade that is almost always around you. I will take the overall performance of this radio all day long over most of the similar radios out there at this price point and below. Baofengs are absolute garbage.
@@lonestarpatriot876 I agree I love the performance aspect of these radios, but even shaded you still can’t really see the screen in daylight. It doesn’t seem that difficult when an any tone 878 can be so bright and these radios can’t seem to be visible. Ham-Solo K0FYR
@Ham-Solo You are comparing a $334 dollar digital HT to an HT I got for $174 from BSR. That seems a bit unrealistic. I am guessing that if BSR put a screen like that in their radios, it would hike the price up quite a bit. I am also guessing there are not a whole lot of people who want to spend $334 for a GMRS radio. This is why so many people buy Baofengs, and they are garbage. People apparently don't care because they are cheap.
@ Well I had both the GMRS and the Ham versions as well as the 9G pro version ham radio before that and got rid of all 3 eventually and downgraded to the KG916 because it was LCD and I could read the screen and it is still from BSR and superheterodyne. My jumbospot that I got for $50 dollars has a brighter screen. I’ve purchased over $800 worth of radios from BSR so this isn’t as much nit picking as it is stating that had they went with a slightly better screen option it would have been a better radio. Ham-Solo K0FYR
@@Ham-SoloThis is just illustrating the nitpicking to me. If you were only worried about screens your point might be valid to me. I personally would not be comparing a Jumbospot and a KG-UV916 to a KG-UV9GX. There are clear differences in features between the 916 and the 9GX. The 916 having almost 600 less channels is just 1 of those differences. I personally would take the 9GX all day long over the 916. I personally like to look at all features when comparing products. I see 599 less channels as being a negative when comparing the two. You went so far as to talk about the covert screen without realizing that is meant for nighttime use. That is the epitome of nitpicking. Why not nitpick the 916 as well for it's lack of features compared to the 9GX? Anyway, to each their own.
@@lonestarpatriot876Well the extra 600 receive only SHTF channels don’t matter as much to me as a vast majority of those aren’t used anymore do to digital trunking systems in both emergency response and government sectors and I could easily buy a cheaper scanner and still hear them. My main point of the update video was to point out the difficulty in seeing the screen in full daylight which Mark K6LED from BSR agreed with me and said he is working on a screen solution for that issue. Ham-Solo K0FYR
It's not the ballons that help your signal, it's the Height of the wire. lol, couldn't resist but a good try. Waiting for your next weather balloon.
How is EiRP off the moon so much higher than what the original transmit power was? Forgive my ignorance. I'd like to see the math on that.
@@planetcrypto8662 It’s the parabolic nature of the dish. A 60 foot dish has a reflected focal point and adds 43 dB of gain. Every 3 dB is doubling power so 350 watts at 43 dB gives us about 7,000,000 watts. Check out omnicalculator.com and use their gain calculator. Ham-Solo K0FYR
I want their old trailer. I'd love to fix it up.
@@planetcrypto8662 It’s fairly beat up and full of sand and dirt from the winds out there. Really starting to fall apart but I’m sure if you talk to them they may be ok with it. Ham-Solo K0FYR
NOT saying your wrong, but I just got an H8 Gen 2 and checked mine during a long key down and no heat at all.
@@davep6977 I get it but it actually was RF burn and not general heat but that’s the sensation. It also was one of their early versions and the problem was corrected by a firmware update and a new battery being included in later radios. Had the company test it and they found the issue and then corrected it. That was well over a year and a half ago. Ham-Solo K0FYR
