Pull Type Grader Box Blueprint || DIY Box Blade How-To Video Tutorial for dimensions and materials

  • This is a "video blueprint" for how to build your own "Pull Type Grader Box" or sometimes referred to as "box scrapers" or "box blades". This video will show you a close up of the grader box that we have built and I will discuss the dimensions of all the materials to be fabricated and provide recommendations on where to source the components needed to build your own grader box at home. DIY fabricators can use this video to guide them through the process of building a pull type box blade.
    We no longer sell these grader boxes so I have made this video in an attempt to help someone that either wishes to do this on their own or possibly hire someone to do it for them.

    Doing research on this project and after looking at maybe 80 videos I have to say this is the best one I've seen. You knew what you were talking about (no hem-hawing), good camera work and good editing. Hope I do half as good when I do a video. thanks for your effort, it must have been considerable.

This video was a fair amount of work but I honestly do think these are a great tool and since I can't build them for the masses, I hope people can find the resources to make one themselves.     Thank you. I use to grade a road with a bulldozer some 45 yrs ago. It is a designated Road - still plowed by the "city". Now - my dad - has worked on this for 30+ yrs. So I know that the road has lost more than 100 tons of road, in the last 4 decades. So - I have been researching this subject for 5 years. And I wish you well. These ideas - will build for me a box plow for the dozer. Cheers to you sir!

    I wanted to build a stick rake and found this video. The scraper looks very handy as you designed and built. The dimensions, details how the lift wheels are built along with drawings and hydraulic info is very helpful. Thanks great video.

    I made a simple one out of angle iron to go under my garden tractor a couple years ago.
    I think I needed more weight.

    Super helpful. Already have aJD-430 and older 50 inch box scraper with rippers. Just need to get help on fabricating the other components. Definitely want to plumb hydraulics into the spooler and run nicely to the back of tractor. Thanks for the video.

      When I restore one of my 318's this winter I'll most likely have a close up of how to plumb those from the spool valve. You can get in line of the hydraulic circuit with a run tee and then plumb to the rear. I think there's a company called auxiliary hydraulics that makes a kit for it. Best of luck!

    Excellent video ... i have an older 6ft box scraper waiting for me to get repaired. I bent the heck out of it pulling up bigger rocks than i should have been pulling with my tractor. Your video has inspired me to fix and modify, rather than sell it - maybe. That list of winter projects just keeps getting longer. Thanks again for the info.

      I know all about that winter project list! Funny you mention the 6' box scraper project. I too hope to convert a 6' box scraper into a pull type to be used behind my JD 755.     Hey, thanks for posting this, it helps me a lot to have some place to start for an ATV box blade. The one main thing I'd like to do differently is have separate axles and actuators so one side can be higher to help me form a crown in my driveway.

      I can see where that would be tempting to do. Only trouble I've had running ones with independent lift is it is difficult to get it back to level. That'll be a fun build though so best of luck!

    i like the video. an idea i had was a adjustable tires to put a crown in the road. maybe a plate with multiple holes and use a 3/4 bolt for the axle.

    Not sure how I ended up here, but it's been a serendipitous evening for dozing off at the keyboard! I've been contemplating building my own versus getting one of those Brinly manual types, but just looking at the things, I can tell that the entry price doesn't include many hours of needing to beef them up for hard clay soil waiting to mangle wimpy, thin metal. On the flip side, steel prices are insane right now, and getting into the ol' scrap yards looking for salvage is nigh on impossible due to legalities in the current climate (read, liabilities... Thanks, lawyers!)
    Talk about being between a rock and a hard case!

      @@digdrivediy I was able buy a cutting edge off market place then cut it length ways and use the two pieces one for each unit. Used front wheels off garden tractors that I had, purchased hyd cylinders from surplus supply, metal from a local supplier. Did put the teeth on they are a challenge and time consuming with all the large holes, Bridgeport mill made drilling holes easier. About $600 into each unit. I did find that by removing hyd.cylinder the front can be stood up with the hitch pole vertical for storage makes it nice and compact and it can still be wheeled around. Friend is very generous with many things. Thanks again for plans and motivating me to build these box blades they will get used.

    Great video! I'm up here in Alaska and going with low temp steel and low temp welding procedures to put it together but overall great idea! Using the grader for the 2 year old's snowmobile track around the house Thanks for your effort.

    I converted a 66" wide box blade to a grader. I put a ball hitch on the back of my small tractor and raised the blade from the front by raising the 3 point. The blade is 1/3 of the distance from the wheel axel behind and 2/3 back from the ball hitch. The overall length from hitch to axel is 10 feet. The frame was made of 1.5 by 3 inch steel tubing 3/16 wall thickness. The frame angles down behind the blade to meet the axel height determined by the 13 inch wheel tire combo. The frame angles down in front so as to capture more of the 3 point lift. I can raise the blade 6.75 inches for transport. The best part is the frame bolts to the box blade with the same bolts in the same holes that originally attached the upper frame of the box blade so no modifications were made to the blade I had an old box blade that was getting no use. The cost to convert was between $500 and $600 in 2021. ( If we don't count the cost of the MIG welder and plasma cutter.)

    Oh absolutely! But the cool thing is if you shipped it unpainted unwelded, you could just throw it all in a small crate and it wouldn't matter if all the material was cut. Then it would be just a matter of a rectangular box to throw everything in. And you wouldn't have to worry about shipping damage. I've driven for FedEx freight for 27 years. I totally know about damage on painted stuff.

      @@digdrivediy you might be able to get it cheap enough to make a pretty good amount of money on them and sell them way cheaper than anybody else is. Cuz there's a whole bunch of people out there with welders but not a whole lot of skills to cut the metal. I know a laser cutter here in Kansas City they can stack five six sheets of 1/8 in plate up and cut it all at once. I'm sure there's a laser cutter waterjet guy close to you guys if he can cut five of them at once that would save you a bunch of money on cost. And I know of a 7 by 13 horizontal Band Saw will cut three or four sticks of 2in all at once. And then like I said you can stack the kit in just a wooden crate they can weld it together. You definitely don't look like a man that needs more to do. :-) you're about like me I work for FedEx Freight. I drive 3090 miles a week. Takes about 60 hours to do that. And I'm raising my fool girl by myself. But I just want to say I really super appreciate you putting the plans on there I could have built it off of the awesome videos, but Sure your video on the measurements and Design makes it easier🤯🤯🤯🤓

    ha, so funny, I saw your driveway video when you re-did it a while back just a day or two ago and what I took away from that video was, I need to reach out to him to ask him how he built that hydraulic drag behind box blade. I have a land plane, but that thing you got look pretty awesome. And then Boom today, you have the how to build it, Neil, you read my mind. haha

      @@digdrivediy I really Like the Dump Truck Video. I bought an old 1963 F600, and it made me more money for my family when we really needed it. 6 cyl, 2 spd rear end, I was passing R-190 10 wheelers coming out of a sand pit in 2nd gear, low range, now problem.Wish I still had it.

    Thanks for the details. I'm considering making something similar for my John Deere 3520. Main difference would be that along with the wheels, I'd like to be able to lift the whole unit up with my 3-point. This would allow me to start and stop easier on our driveways, which have lots of turnouts and very few long straight runs.

      Sounds cool Jack. I'm not sure how that would work but would be very interested in seeing the finished product. I've never had very good luck being very smooth with the 3pt draft arm control but for starting and stopping would probably be nice. Good luck and let us know how it goes if you get it built.       @@digdrivediy I agree completely with the 3pt comment. My concept is to have the grader float free of the 3pt lift arms, possibly link with chain. My use of the 3pt is to lift the whole grader and wheels up, so I can reverse to areas that I can't drive to normally when towing only.

    a curved blade might be a good mod for paths, driveways, and maybe ability to adjust wheels indpendently to make a slope.

      @@johnholt2528 I built one and it works good. I didn't expect the amount of wear I witnessed on the teeth. Harder metal next time. I did not not bother with a print. The video does a great job.

    Dumb question just to make sure.
    If I have a regular 3 point hitch that goes up and down I can build the box minus the wheels and lift part I assuming?
    I just don't see any where close to $1500 worth of material in the small 4ft box blades I have seen. That is why I figured people could/have. DIY'd these.

      You can lift a 3pt box but you don't get the benefits that come with a pull type box. It's easier to grade with the pull type.

    Excellent video! What would you say to using HSS planer blades for the cutting edge? There are some 12" ones with bolt holes in them (Makita 2012NB, 2 for $30 on Amazon). I was thinking of a 48" width, and that the bottom couple of inches of the back plate could be bent (possibly by grinding a groove, bending, and then welding it up), with the blades bolted to them, with just a little edge sticking out. Also, what about having thick tabs on either side of the rippers instead of boxing them in, so they could be easily removed. Not as strong, but maybe strong enough.

      I'd say whatever is cheap and would hold up is good with me. I think you'd want the rippers boxed in. Much of the strain is on the back portion. They take a beating.

    My "old girl" Farmall A is dedicated to grading, but I'll be building a box like yours. Since the drawbar is at 16" I imagine you can scale the design up so its height is 16 inch, maybe the end plates each 16"X16". But would you go to 1/4 inch plate and 3X3 box iron for the scale up? Too heavy to handle?

    I have watched this video a few times. I have a full acre property I would drag a makeshift harrow (using a 36" x 2" angle iron with 3 semi truck snow chains). This helps with the weeds. However, there are portions of the property I would like to level out. I like your design over other DIY scrapers. So, I was wondering if you are willing to make drawings/plans for the build (for a cost of course)?. For myself, it will be easier for me to scale down to use behind my garden tractor.

    Very nice, well detailed video.
    Definitely gonna be building one. The one major change I'll be doing is the side plates. I think making a set of adjustable skid shoes would be a good addition. This way whenever the scraper blade wears out you can replace the skid shoes also.

      Just keep in mind the cutting edge should hang lower than any skid shoes or it won't cut when you need it to.

    I thought about using a trailer tongue jack. No hydraulic or electric to mess with. In place of the rippers, use old garden tiller plows with a depth wheel in the center. This would allow it to cut deeper, using the box for added weight and level at the same time for seed beds.

    Thanks for such an informative video. I recently got my first John Deere, a 332, and I'm loving it! I have a large gravel drive that I maintain and I'm planning on making one of these box blades. I was thinking of using two hydrolic cylinders, one for each side of the blade so that I can make a crown on the driveway while I am grading. Do you think this is good idea or do you think I should stick with the single cylinder?

      I love the 332. Never had one but I have the 322 gasoline brother right now. I'm not sure on the two cylinders. I've wanted to try that as well. It would only help to start the crown and then once you're working at an angle you'd want the grader flat again. I have mixed emotions on that because I think I'd always have trouble getting it leveled back out when I want it level. There are some made that way so it must work.       I converted a 66" wide box blade to a grader. I put a ball hitch on the back of my Kubota L3800 tractor and raised the blade from the front by raising the 3 point. The blade is 1/3 of the distance from the axel behind and 2/3 back from the ball hitch. The overall length from A frame hitch to axel is 10 feet. The frame was made of 1.5 by 3 inch steel tubing 3/16 wall thickness. The frame angles down behind the blade to meet the axel height determined by the 13 inch wheel tire combo. The frame angles down in front so as to capture more of the 3 point lift capability. I can raise the blade 6.75 inches for transport. Four quarter inch thick plates extend from the frame down to the box blade and use the same bolts in the same holes that originally attached the upper frame of the box blade so no modifications were made to the blade. My old box blade was getting no use. The cost to convert was between $500 and $600 in 2021. ( If we don't count the cost of the MIG welder and plasma cutter :-) If I can find someone who can get the video to RUclips I will give the full tour.

    Great design. One question: What material is used for the ripper retainers welded onto the front bar?

      I’m not saying for sure, but quick glance, it looks like 3/8” flat bar. That’s what I’d do here. Take a square on either side to line up with the shank (in middle), then tack on each side. Then put a piece of bar stock or a piece of 1x3 tube and tack in behind it. Line em all up and weld it solid.

    How hard would it be to make a simple set of pallet forks for an 87 316? I'm sure there are cat 0 3 point forks if I ever invest in a 3 point for it but was just curious if its something you ever thought about. Also do you have a go to non dealer place for parts on your older machines?

      I do have a miniature set of pallet forks for my 3-point hitch on these little tractors. It works great, especially if you have a smaller pallet to go with them. I don't know what you could do for forks otherwise without the 3-point hitch. Usually for any parts that I need I just get from the dealer but generally speaking I don't do much more than maintenance luckily.

I believe they are called "weather resistant" which means "they could maybe get rained on once but I wouldn't make a habit of it"!     Great video! In you opinion are there any advantages of a pull type box scraper over a 3 point box blade? I'm looking at building one or the other to use on a gravel drive.

      Hi Bill. In my opinion I most definitely prefer the pull type to the 3 pt grader box. I find that if you really want to grade things out level then the pull type is a better choice.     Thank you for posting this. DO you have any insight to modifying an existing 3pt box scraper to a pull type? I'd like to be able to use it in both function (3pt & pull) when different need arise.

      That's a great idea and I'm right there with you. I bought a 3pt box to convert to a pull type for my bigger tractors but I haven't finished. I didn't have any plans to use it both ways but that is something to consider. The tricky part would be dealing with the wheels and stuff mounted to the back if wanting to use as a 3pt only box. The hitch part would be easy to make detachable.

      @@digdrivediyMy thought for the wheel section is to make the hydraulic arm be able to raise the wheels higher (mount the top of the arm higher and have longer piston travel) or just use quick clips to be able to just pull the wheels off of their 3/4" shafts. My other concern is that the weight of a bigger box may nee 3 wheels to spread out the load.

    Hey something I wanted to tell you have you ever thought about doing a kit? You know having the stuff laser cut or something and doing the kit? Like the do on the price breaks?

      I have thought about doing that but I've just never acted on it. It would be a pretty easy thing to accomplish but would be still difficult to ship. That's where the time kill lies is getting things boxed and crated for heavy shipping. It still a viable idea though. I need an extra day of the week!

    This is great how thick was the metal on the backing plate was it 3\16 also
