- Gravel Driveway Restoration & Regrading: How To Guide Using a 3 pt Box Scraper & Pull Type Box Blade. Plenty of action shots as well as BEFORE & AFTER drone footage of how to restore a gravel driveway for my neighbor using a 3 point hitch mounted box blade on the John Deere 755 and a pull type grader box behind my John Deere 316. I outline my 4 step approach to rejuvenating a stone driveway to freshen up the edges and blend in some new stone with the old stone. This is a good method to practice for driveway maintenance, driveway repairs or rebuilding your existing driveway. I also provide a bunch of tips and techniques for using the homemade pull type hydraulic box blade or pull type grader box when you want to regrade your driveway.

love that pull type grader you made. i'm going to have to build one of those for the 755. I'm awkward as all get out with a box blade on a three point, which is why i don't have one. but that pull type really does the job. nice work sir!
Thanks a bunch! I've wanted one for my 755 as well so if you get it done first be sure to send me those plans! Thanks for watching and commenting I really appreciate it.
@@digdrivediy, scar fire, learn how to say it. Scar fire. You sound like someone from idiocracy
@@takeastandorbeenslavedby-left Took me all day to figure out what you're talking about. So, am I saying that wrong? I'll stick with "ripper teeth" then :)

This is my 5th comment on this one video.... Neil i can not begin to explain how much i enjoy watching you grade ANY driveway! Your process, strategy, commentary, the usage of tractor, box blade pull type.... This is perfection! By reading thru other comments im not wrong that you are the King of Box Blades! Thank you so much for this masterpeice!
The circle approach, your attention to details is thd BEST!
Rewatched! You are the box scraper KING! You can make any driveway look pristine!
I'm watching again.... soothing and informative commentary, love the box blade and grading of the ground.
That little hydraulic box scraper really does a nice job on the edges. Leaving edges all ripped up and lumpy is a real peeve for me and you did a great job on all that detail work
Sounds like we would get along just fine. I like a nice crisp edge as well and these little boxes do a nice job as you observed. I like 'em to look nice. Thanks for the comment!
Great job, that pull type box grader along with the tight turn radius of your smaller tractor work perfectly for your circle technique, and ends with spectacular results.
Thanks a bunch CampNut. I do like the maneuverability of the little tractors.
Wow that turned out great. That little pull behind grader box seems to be the ticket! 👍🏼
The pull type box is my first choice, does a good job.
Good choice! I agree they just work so well. Simple and effective.
The attention to detail is CRAZY!
I've watched I bet 20 videos on scraping and resurfacing your gravel or limestone driveway you've not only explained the most throrally but your finished product was also the most asteically pleasing. I have 100 ft of driveway out to my polebarn and also my driveway it's our first house with that much of driveway and it's got be scraped and stone added. I have a box blade and 6ft finish blade for my massey 135 but I can really use both when It comes to tearing stuff up but the finish work I'm awfully your video gave me some confidence cause i know someone who had the drawbar finish scraper you leveled the driveway with. What a good video thank for making it.
Wow Bryan! Thanks for such thoughtful and kind words. You know, I find it somewhat difficult to thoroughly and accurately represent on video what your brain goes through in the process of doing a project like this. I'm glad that you found the explanation contained here to be helpful and encouraging. If your neighbor has that pull type box, then go after that driveway! Good luck getting it all shaped up I'll bet it will be easier than you think!
Neil, this would be a great project that I would love to be there in person to learn, ask questions, use the equipment, etc. this would be worth the price of admission! Learn from the Master of the Driveway!
Great video! I hadn't seen anybody do circles in the grading process.... that's good point!
Great video! I love the guage wheels on the grader box.
My go to implement for my gravel business is my landplane.
Nice work!
Thanks Bill! I've used a land plane as well and they are certainly a useful tool if you're doing a lot of this type of work. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Excellent. The circles are a huge advantage.
I'm a huge fan of the circles! Get dizzy sometimes!! :)
That pull type grader is super cool!
Thanks! It is my favorite for sure.
Circles. Brilliant. Seems like a great way to do the initial scraping/cutting while keeping the material in the same general area. I'll try it out in the next couple of days.
Thanks Chris! Yeah, it works great if you've got the room to do it.
My family farms and we have a larger pull type box scraper. We use it behind a 120 hp tractor. We use it on our driveway and road when we have rough conditions due to rain . Nice job very well detailed and well planed .
Appreciate it Anthony. Those bigger ones are terrific as well. You can actually move some material around too I bet when you've got enough horses to load that box full. When I was doing full time excavating we had a 12' box that we pulled with a 1468 International and it was the best tool we had for finish grading. Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by the channel.
I love the pull grader you made. I have been thinking about building a 3 point hitch boxblade, but after watching this, I plan on copying your design.
It's a sweet setup Andy. Good luck and send me some pics or something.
I respect your love for older John Deere tractors. I recently purchased a John Deere 790 4wd, and I want to restore it. It is mechanically in good condition. Just could use a fresh paint job. A pull type box blade is something I have wondered about, and you validated my thoughts when I found your channel. I remember my dad using a bigger version to grade his turn roads when he was farming.
One of the better videos on how to do this and tools used and use of them.👍👍
Thanks a lot Clark!
I liked your discussion on the 3-point Box Blade and how it's hard to work with it on a bumpy road. I had the same problem and thought it was just me. I started to back the box blade and push the gravel vs pulling it. That worked much better. I still need to put down more gravel in the driveway and I liked your comments on ripping up the old before applying new. I will do that. Thanks!
Hey Steve. I couldn't agree more with your comment about pushing vs pulling. I don't know if I mentioned that in the video but I should have. I hope you were able to get something of value out of this. Thanks for checking out the video. I'll probably have another driveway video very soon!
Great work! Love the pull type box, makes a great finish. I got some great info. I noticed in one video you compacted by driving the 755 over the drive. I find if I do that with a loaded bucket I get much better compaction. Also I back drag with the bucket down just lifting the front axle up and using a slight down angle seems to work good. And your absolutely right about cutting the hard pack out. Your the only guy I've seen do that and it's a must otherwise it's like dumping salt on a glass table, new material will just push out to the edge.
Appreciate it Stephen! I like your analogy of salt on a glass table. That is exactly right! I load the bucket to compact most of the time as well. Just all depends on if I'm trying to compact or just sealing things off. I love doing this kinda stuff and hearing from other folks about the topic. Appreciate your thoughts and feedback and thanks for watching!
At first i thought you were a nut, then watching further on the video i realized you really know what you are doing. I ran a skid steer and backhoe for my whole career and i have to say you have mastered the art of leveling, it really is harder than most people think. phenomenal job Neil.
Ha! Not the first time I've been called a nut! Thanks for the kind words. I really enjoy doing this kinda stuff! Appreciate you watching!
Thanks for posting this.
I have been wanting to either build a drag type land plane or box blade and this gives me a few ideas. 👍
Hey no problem Tony. I'm actually planning to upload a video this week that will be a "blueprint" of sorts for those that want to try a build similar to mine. Maybe that could be of help to you also. Thanks for checking out the video.
Back again.watching this great video! Love the circles in the grading process.... the driveway looks good!
Thanks Aaron!
This is good knowledge and quality work...I trick I've learned running big construction loaders like john Deere j210 or Case 530/580 is if you have a hydraulic top link and a float mode on your 3 point set the 3piont in float and adjust your grade with the top link you can pull material and spread it in one pass and speeds up rough grade work and gets you gang close to an almost finished grade.
Well done Neil, great job mate, nice equipment. Hello 👋 from UK 👍🇬🇧
Thanks for the kind words sir! So great to see folks checking in from all over the globe! Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Take care!
Very clever design of your scratch-built scraper. Looks like it;s built to last also. Nice work!
Thank you very much sir. So far it has proven the test of time and has always been on the ready when I need it. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to share the kind words. Take care.
Very good job
Good Job, nice result. Thanks for circle tip
Thanks I appreciate it. Can't live without the circles now 👍🏻
Looks great, thx for the tips!
Great job!! Really like your pull grader box! Nice fabrication!!
Thanks Terry!
Excellent video!
Never thought of the circle technique but it looks awesome! Great video
Yeah, sometimes I can make myself dizzy I do so many circles. I haven't found a better way to do it than that really. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Circling with your pull-behind looks to work great if you got the room Or are want to widen what bade layer you've got already. I'm gonna have to find one 4Sale simply Cuz I'm not an engineer type. Happy grading y'all, < N. PA farm country ✔️🇺🇸
Beautiful job. I've never used the pull type but I prefer pull type discs for cultivating and I've been wondering. you answered a lot of my questions. Thank you.
You're welcome and thanks for watching it!
Fantastic video
Thank you for all your work into this video ,.. lots of good tips blessings
love the box scraper you built ! wish l had one 👍
Thanks Berry! They are great.
Sir,
Thank you for the mentoring. I have to do same to our road and have had zero training irt rock work.
Your video was entertaing and VERY informative. THANK YOU
Thanks Jerry! I'm glad you found it of interest. Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to say hi! Good luck with your road work.
Great video Neil! The homemade grader looks to be pretty enjoyable to use.
Thanks so much! Yes, it is a blast to use. I hardly ever get tired of it!
Beautiful job!!
Thanks a lot. It was fun to do too!
Wow another great video I don't live anywhere near where there's driveways like that but I watched every second of it and had a good time doing it
Thanks so much Ed. I'm grateful to have you watching!
Thanks for the video!
That... was... awesome.
Thanks Bryce!
I might be weird but i love watching videos like this lol thanks for taking the time to put this together I'm sure it took a lot of time setting up the camera's and editing
I happen to think you're not weird at all! Matter of fact I'm counting on folks like you that like to watch this kinda stuff! And you're right, it takes an embarrassing amount of time to film and edit. But I enjoy the process and hope that others can find it either helpful, entertaining or both. Thanks for watching and commenting! Take care.
I’ll converting my box to pull type box thanks to this video. It’s very challenging when the working edge isn’t independent from the tractor
I completely agree. I think that will make a great tool for you. As a matter of fact, I'm in the process of gathering materials to convert a 6' 3 point box into a pull type. Look for that video to come along sometime this fall I hope. Thanks for watching!
Great video as I learned so much about graders and the techniques for using them. It gave me good appreciation for this tool. Keep up the fantastic videos!!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks so much for checking out the videos!
Love it, thank you.
Looks great. Awesome job.
Thanks KB!
Excellent video. very informative.
Great job learned bunches
Next to TTWT and Just a Few Archers Farms this has become my new go to favorite channel. Everything your doing is very inspiring to a yung DIYer like myself.
Wow, that's quite a compliment and I really appreciate you saying that my friend! Thanks so much for watching and dropping a comment. I hope you continue to enjoy it here!
@@digdrivediy id and I will. Thanks for the response. Id love some day to just see a full equipment tour of everything you have and use. Im a big fan of those.
Hey Hi from Ontario Canada. I have to say this was one of the most informative videos I've seen on this subject. I like your approach on recording your work from above, and later editing with comments for us the viewers, (as opposed to talking over the machinery as you work, and usually making up stuff on the fly just to fill time as you go along). You have obviously put a lot of time into reviewing your on site work after the fact, and editing your video with comments on reasons why you did what you did - that is an important thing for the typical DIY guys that don't have $50k of equipment, or tons of hours working experience. Your efforts shows to the conscientious viewer. Thank you. And btw, I totally get working in circles with a smaller machine.
Boy, you know how to compliment a video! Thank you for such a thorough and respectful comment. I try my best to put into a video what goes on in my head as I'm working on a project like this and have found it can be somewhat difficult to do. My goal is to be educational and entertaining but the ultimate satisfaction is receiving a viewer comment like this which validates my efforts. Thanks for watching I really appreciate it.
Nice job!
Thanks!
Outstanding video! Good job!
Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback.
Looks Great. The pull type is like a speed mover.
I had to Google "speed mover". Hadn't heard that term before but yeah, looks to be the same exact concept. Thanks for checking out the video.
Well done sir. Well done.
Thanks John!
I'm working on my father in law's old 316 he left abandoned outside for about 18 years. I would love to build one of these box blades, as they have about 100 acres in maine with a rutted out gravel driveway. Very neat idea!
Glad to hear of another old Deere getting brought back from the dead! You'll find all kinds of great uses for it. Good luck getting it going and with your box blade when you get started. You won't regret it! Thanks for watching!
As always, great job. I need to get some practice with my grader box. I always have trouble with leaving a row of gravel that come out of each side of the box.
Very cool concept
Appreciate that Tim.
Great tips.
Looks good.
Thanks!
Great video , thanks.
really nice job!
Thanks R D!
Good job. Very nice video. I appreciate the effort you put into it. Thank you.
That is really nice to hear. Thanks for checking out the videos.
Very nice, well done!
Thanks Tad.
Nicely done. Very informative
Glad you liked it.
Old 316 doing work!
Oh yes, this 'ole girl is still my main workhorse. What might surprise some people though is that it has a 25 hp Robin engine under the hood making it a bit of a "sleeper" lol. At least it doesn't run out of power pulling that box like my Onan powered tractors often do. Thanks for checking it out B-Rad!
Quality work! Just now discovered your channel, definitely subscribing. Great job on building the pull type box blade, seems to get the job done well!
Thanks for checking it out! I appreciate the kind words. That grader box certainly does do a good job and it still continues to be my favorite thing to play with. Thanks again for the feedback and for subbing to the channel. It makes creating the videos more worth it when you have this type of interaction.
Did enjoy this and is very helpful!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
What a great video. Now I'm sitting here cogitating on how I can modify my box blade so I can also use it as a pull type.
Hey Thanks! You won't regret it if you do!
Add a removable drawbar to it and some removable wheels mounted with 2in receiver hitches and call it good, adjust height with the three point hitch
Insight and ideas.... Thanks!!
Hope it can be helpful.
Another great video!!
Thanks Andy!
Awesome video!
Thanks for the visit and I appreciate the comment.
I was always told to spread out the driveways , and get them leveled, with doing circles your working all the fines outta your material, but I absolutely agree with ripping up the existing material. I got the same 755 minus the loader
That's true, some of the fines do settle out as you're grading in circles, but I actually like that in most scenarios. I like having some loose stone on top rather than the hard pack as it doesn't track up in your tires when wet as much. Some people may prefer to have the hard pack with fines in the top layer I suppose. Lots of variations for different situations I guess. Much if it depends on what type of stone you're working with too I guess. So glad to hear from another 755 owner. They really are a good tractor. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
Cool video, seeing it before, after and all the in-betweens really shows the detail you put into it.
Thanks Tony. Yeah, it does seem like a bit much when you look at it this way. I always just "do it", so being forced to think through it as a video made me realize how much there is to it. Thanks for watching and your supportive comments!
Good job
Thank You. And thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video…..very professionally done.
Thanks so much Richard!
Really enjoyed it and it was very helpful
Thanks Jason. Appreciate you watching.
goin in circles and different angles is good to take out the "wave" out of a road
Yeah, that's a great way to explain it! You're spot on John. Thanks!
Using the correct equipment for the job works too lol
Great video! Man I wish you were still building them. I would love to grab one.
Thanks I appreciate it. Yeah, have had quite a few folks want them just can't justify it anymore. Thanks for watching!
Nice... really nice.
Thanks I appreciate it.
Makes me want a gravel driveway
Lol! Hey, you can dump gravel on top of about anything :) Thanks for watching!
Nice work! And you commentary is definitely the voice of experience. Newbies would benefit greatly from listening closely.
Nice instructional video.
Thanks Joel. Glad you like it. Thanks for watching.
An alternative to the pull type grader if a guy doesn't want to or can't build one is a land plane. I do gravel driveways with my JD 5075E and 1025R using the loader and box blade exactly like you, the dropping the box blade and running the land plane. I have a hydraulic top link and can dial in the dual grader blades perfectly and quickly on the fly. Very easy to run and only need one tractor on the job. Yours does a nice job as well. Always more than one way to skin a cat.
There certainly is more than one way to do it. I have tried one of those planes before as well and I didn't have terrific luck with it but I didn't give it much of a chance either. I would like to have a bigger project where I can play with one. Having the hydraulic top link would make a big difference for sure. Appreciate the feedback Daniel and thanks so much for watching!
Beautifu!! I’m going to make my own pull behide box blade
Did a awesome job I use a skid steer for a lot of my road repairs we do but we have a tractor in the shop that we should blow the dust off and put it to work in the beginning to loosen up the ground !
Thanks! Get that tractor out!!!
COOL!
great video ,best ive seen so far
Thanks John! I really appreciate that and I'm glad you liked the video.
Nice vid mate... G'day from Chillagoe, Australia!
Thanks a lot. Grant! Love hearing from our friends in Australia.
👍🇺🇸 Nice job! On your box blade a hydraulic cylinder for the top link makes all the difference in using and controlling the box blade. Spreading gravel is also easier and you can control the thickness of the gravel as you spread it by tipping the box blade back and forth. Same with the rippers, the depth & angle can be controlled by tipping the box blade using the hydraulic top link!
I should really try that idea. I've heard it is the way to go. Thanks for the suggestion Larry!
Them 318s are beast of garden tractors. That's why I own one!
There's no doubt about that statement! That's why I find it so difficult to own just one of them! The 318 is my all time favorite and I've owned 6 or 8 of them. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@digdrivediy What do those usually go for around your parts?
@@Staki6908 I'd say $1000 is the average. You can find super nice ones for $1500 or worn out ones for $650. I always go for the ones that have some attachments and you can get a good deal usually.
I love mine to,but that's a 316
@@gavinstraight2187 Good eye. Yes, this one happens to be a 316 but I have 3 other 318s so I often lump them all by saying "318". Actually, this 316 is my Frankenstein tractor. It has a 25 hp Robin Subaru engine in it and it is much more powerful than any of my other Onan powered tractors. There's a very old video on this channel of the Robin engine running in the tractor right after I got it done.
God job there!
Thank you very kindly!
I use my jd 4200 and my landscaping rake for my drive way does me a good job 👏
I've always wanted to try a landscaping rake as well. The best tool to use is the one that works for you. Glad to hear you've found a good solution. I've had my eye on a bigger tractor like the 4200 as well. Do you like it or does it make you want anything different? Thanks so much for watching!
Very nice.
Thanks I appreciate it.
I use an old township blade behind a tractor. I pull everything to the center from the sides then work it back out and then put a crown in the driveway so the water can flow to the side of the driveway into the lawn
That is certainly a great approach. It is difficult to do the crowning sometimes with this setup unless you just build up the center first and then grade. Thanks for checking out the video!
Thanks man!
You bet! Hope it helps!
Hi again its Peter from the UK really satisfying video well done Peter UK 🇬🇧
