    Cabo Verde used to be known by its English name Cape Verde, but the country's country wants us all to use the country's Portuguese name. Portuguese is the official language of this island nation off the coast of West Africa. It is a former Portuguese colony, and its population largely descends from both Portuguese settlers and West Africans brought there from the mainland. Before their arrival, the scattered islands of Cabo Verde were uninhabited.
    The culture of Cabo Verde is a fusion of Portuguese and African cultures, and the language they use in daily life is Cape Verdean Creole, which got most of its vocabulary from Portuguese, but is not Portuguese.

      Papiamento was the language of comunication even before portuguese arrive. After, the creole was adopted due to the expansion of enslaved people in that lands. A new comunication language borns. The mix between mainly papiamento, some westside African Countrys and the latin, more especificle Portuguese.
      We're brothers cause we share the same ancestors so, the same origins as well. We just got separeted.

    Congratulations, you did a pretty good job! You nailed it at almost everything. A few remarks, though:
    1 - Traditionally, we consider that they are 10 islands, not 9, even if one of them is uninhabited.
    2 - Please, correct from “Aristide” to “Aristides”.
    3 - We cannot be sure if the only active volcano is the Pico do Fogo! According to geologists, for a volcano to be considered extinct it must not have activity for 10,000 years. The only records about volcanic activity in Cape Verde date from the 15th century.
    4 - Please, correct from “capucha” to “cachupa” (IPA: [kɐˈʃupɐ]).

    The music of Cabo Verde / Cape Verde was worth mentioning in more detail. It is absolutely wonderful and unique, combining the bluesy-ness of Portuguese Fado with African rhythms. Cape Verde's most famous export to the international music scene was the incredible Cesaria Evora, who you can see here performing one of her signature tunes, "Sodade": ruclips.net/video/qx4z9V2hydQ/видео.html

    Paul, to echo your comment about CV being a transport crossroads, many years ago I visited CV without setting foot there. I was on a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta and they stopped there in the dead of night to refuel - we weren't allowed to disembark. Interestingly, during the Apartheid period SAA used to refuel there on flights to Europe (due north) because most African nations banned them from flying over their airspace (for obvious reasons) thus SAA had to fly 'around' Africa instead of in a straight line. Hopefully I can return some day and actually get off the plane! Thanks for the interesting content.

    I'm in the US and the natural resources here are many and varied and are very important to the economy.
    I quite enjoyed this video. The only time most people in the US hear about Cabo Verde is during hurricane season since many tropical disturbances form after passing over the islands from mainland Africa.

    Just fyi: in Portuguese from Portugal and I'm assuming Cabo Verde, we don't pronounce the E at the end of words. Also, the O at the end of Cabo is pronounced like in the English word "boo". So it would be pronounced [kabu veɾð]

    • @GEOfocusChannel
      @GEOfocusChannel  2 года назад +8

      Yeah, but when I looked up the pronunciation of the name, there was an Anglicized pronunciation used by non-Portuguese speakers. So it went from the English translation to an Anglicized pronunciation of the Portuguese name.

    Cachupa is soo good. Depending on where you go it can be more like a soup or more like a hash. Still delicious either way. I would have loved for you to mention Brava - A Ilha Das Flores (the island of flowers) just to the west of Fogo. It is the smallest but most lush island. There are two micro islands near it that are sea turtle sanctuaries as well. For this reason a turtle is pictured on their coins (escudos). Another awesome thing is their coconut bread- different depending on the island, and how the dialects vary depending on the island with the northern and southern islands bearing distinct similarities within themselves. The islands are grouped in halves called Barlavento and Sotavento though I can't remember which was the northern/southern one or not.

    lnteresting video, on a country one does not usually hear about. l knew about the country insisting on that its name always having to be said in Portuguese, which is ridiculous; similar to lvory Coast always wanting to be called Cote d'lvoire, in all languages. l still remember when Cape Verde became independent, when l was 11 years old.
