I did watch some of his shows on his linguistic channel and I was surprised that in talking about the influence of Arabic rule on the Spanish language is not as I thought following 800 years of ruling the Iberian peninsula. It would be interesting to watch his talk about the same influence on the Portuguese language if that is available.
No he didn't. I am Omani and he pronounced Al Batinah as Al Bateenah. Its pronounced Al Batnah )الباطنة( Mussandam he used a heavy S instead of a light one Its مسندم Not مصندم Not Hajar, its Hajr حجر Not Yarubi its Yaarubi يعربي Halwa was written wrong in Arabic. Its not حلاوة its حلوى
@@osamael-beshir8538 I had the same positive experience when Paul spoke about European/Brazilian Portuguese and Brazil's geography as well. Every word he said was consonant with our standard phonetics. There are differences between countries, but people from Brazil, Portugal and Angola can understand each other if they all agree on talking slowly, for example. The very same phenomenon happens between Arabic-speaking countries. Sometimes people don't get the idea that they don't live in a bubble and therefore their way of pronunciating something is neither better nor worse compared to other native speakers. I see that happening between Argelians, Egyptians and Jordanians, they sometimes think they're better than the others among themselves. Well, as same as anywhere else. Cheers!
Great video. Something to add: in the Dhofar region, there are several native, unwritten languages that are Semitic, but only very distantly related to Arabic. These are Mehri, Jibbali, Harsusi, Bathari, and Hobyot. The last three are endangered.
I went to Oman in 2001. At the time it wasn't a tourist destination at all, but there were some expats from the region who started to visit it. I had been attracted to Oman through books anyway, it in fact started to attract some globe trotters who didn't dare Yemen any longer (which had been a bit popular in the 80s but was starting to be deemed too dangerous). I had to get an interview at the Oman embassy where I lived so that I would get the tourist visa; the man interviewing me didn't seem to understand why a female solo tourist wanted to go there. I was in fact on my way to Iran, in this trip. I have very fond memories of Oman, it is the Arabia you dream about. The landscape is absolutely gorgeous, the country is modern yet traditional at the same time, the people are gracious, it is all very exotic yet safe. I loved everything: the architecture, the local arts and handicrafts, the food (it was quite hard to find the real stuff but I was sent to Bin Atique where you eat sitting on the floor the traditional way), it is all mesmerizing and thankfully not overly touristy. I recommend that destination to anyone who likes beauty and genuine destinations.

He invited me to go to Oman but I was too intimidated, it was in 1996.Limited knowledge and different situation at the time. I am from Oman. Trekking\hiking is a popular hobby during cooler months and if you like fragrances there is an Omani perfume house called Amouage inspired by local ingredients such as frankincense!
I lived and worked in Oman in 2012 and loved the experience. The people were warm and welcoming and seemed happy and relaxed. I got to travel around Oman with work and the scenery can be breathtaking. It was hitting 50c when I arrived and Aircon is considered life support lol
Nice! I met someone randomly out in public a couple of years ago and we ended up having this little interesting conversation about our jobs. As Western European citizen, he ended up sharing he was working as a project manager in Oman, helping to build those artificial resort islands, like they're doing in Dubai. Sharing that he worked in shifts of 2-3 months, and then, would be home again for a couple of weeks to spend time with family. Family visited him too, in his nice, luxurious and 5 star apartment. The complex had a swimming pool, spa and everything was cared for. He was living the good life.

And now, 40 years later, it's still a special place to us. We've visited all the places you show in the video. P.s.: Sultan Qaboos died in January 2020, the current ruler is Sultan Haitham. At Musandum peninsula up in the mountain , my guide showed me rock painting , shows people lived there many thousands years ago . In a clear day across from Strait of Hormuz , on a clear day one can see Iranian coast lines .
Another fascinating video, Paul. We visited Muscat a few years ago and loved it, such a counterpoint to Dubai. Highly recommended. And I flew over it many times en route from Dubai to work in Somalia. I’d love to go back and visit Musandam and, even more, Salalah that I flew over so many times. As a new Omani resident, I can tell that you missed highlighting (although between the lines mentioned) the qualities of Omani people specially when it comes to hospitality, kindness with others, tolerance of different inclinations, and above all respect which does not -in general- differentiate between people based on nationality or origin. But overall, you did a great job.
I knew about the snowboarding on sand dunes, but not the Khaleef and the fact Oman has a more wet, green and lush area in the South West of the country.
I knew that Oman is more liberal when it comes to women's rights than certain other Arab countries. I learned about the Zanzibar connection. I didn't know about that previously.

Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Busaidy was revered as the defacto peacemaker among the Arab countries. Love the video.
Oman... I was always fascinated by its history, its ability to overcome Portuguese colonialism kinda early. The most surprising thing about Oman I knew, was that it owned a city within Pakistan until the 1960s. A whole day with temperatures above 42°C, even at night, I wonder what the dew point was. I would be surprised if Europeans don't know about it - I've been there twice and it's nowhere as diverse and interesting as Oman. Like I went to the receptionist of a hotel and went "look, I'm finished with my appointments in Vaduz, I still have 2 hours until my train leaves. can you recommend anything to do in 2h?" and she replied "well, in 2h you can see the whole country!"

Bird and whale watching is definitely _not_ something I would have pictured when thinking of a country in the Middle East. It's nice to hear about a country that actually takes steps to protect its wildlife. Seems like most of the time when I learn about these small obscure countries (obscure to westerners, anyway), they're in the process of decimating their own environment.
On a flat map finland seems much bigger than Oman but on a Round map that actually has plate teuctonics and other important things you can actually see the size of Oman and its as big as Finland with roughly the same population.
I honestly didn't know much at all about Oman, so this was really interesting. I learned that Oman has the record for the highest minimum temperature in a 24-hour period at 42.6 C. Of course, being American, I only understand the one true temperature scale - glorious Fahrenheit. So how hot that is is impossible for me to say.
I'm Omani and I just want to say that the hottest temperature is not 42 infant in muscat which isn't the hottest part of Oman can hit over 48°C for more then 12 hrs and usually when it's dry and hot during the night time it's a sign that it can get up to 50° or 52°C in the afternoon the next day. it can get upto 60°C in some parts of sharqiya though I've never been to those parts.
60 degrees is higher than the world record (which is 58 degrees), if you’re talking about temperatures in the shade (which is the usual way it’s measured in weather forecasts). Of course it might get hotter than that in some places, but it has never been recorded. The figure of 42.6 degrees in the video was for a record minimum temperature (ie. at night or in the early morning). During the day it would have been much hotter.
@@GEOfocusChannel we got up to 60°c in the summer of 2021 however I'm not sure about the location of that temperature all I know it it was documented in Sharqiya. And whether it was in the shade or not is something else I'm not sure of it might have been recorded buy someone car or thermometer or have beeb recorded the normal way. I'm not the right person to ask seeing that I don't live in that governorate however I do know that in muscat it regularly goes above 50°C during the summer with a long sustained of over 46°c and 48°c at night however these temperature don't last very long and they usually dissipate in a day or two when it starts getting humid. The temperature kinda slides between extremely dry and hot to extremely humid and hot during the summer. I will try to look for the 60° report though and give it to you if I can find it.
I live in the UAE so let me tell you we are similar in many ways, it's the only country I have ever traveled to as I did many times by car, compared to other Arab countries oman is the best in terms of nature.
a Zanzibari with Omani heritage. Very informative video. I have passed through Oman many times but I hope to come back and know it even further. Oman has left a lot of its cultural aspects back in Zanzibar but I believe Zanzibar 's Helwa will always be better 😏.

It's nice to hear about a country that actually takes steps to protect its wildlife. Seems like most of the time when I learn about these small obscure countries (obscure to westerners, anyway), they're in the process of decimating their own environment.

On a flat map finland seems much bigger than Oman but on a Round map that actually has plate teuctonics and other important things you can actually see the size of Oman and its as big as Finland with roughly the same population.

I honestly didn't know much at all about Oman, so this was really interesting. I learned that Oman has the record for the highest minimum temperature in a 24-hour period at 42.6 C. Of course, being American, I only understand the one true temperature scale - glorious Fahrenheit. So how hot that is is impossible for me to say.

I'm Omani and I just want to say that the hottest temperature is not 42 infant in muscat which isn't the hottest part of Oman can hit over 48°C for more then 12 hrs and usually when it's dry and hot during the night time it's a sign that it can get up to 50° or 52°C in the afternoon the next day. it can get upto 60°C in some parts of sharqiya though I've never been to those parts.
60 degrees is higher than the world record (which is 58 degrees), if you’re talking about temperatures in the shade (which is the usual way it’s measured in weather forecasts). Of course it might get hotter than that in some places, but it has never been recorded.
The figure of 42.6 degrees in the video was for a record minimum temperature (ie. at night or in the early morning). During the day it would have been much hotter.
@@GEOfocusChannel we got up to 60°c in the summer of 2021 however I'm not sure about the location of that temperature all I know it it was documented in Sharqiya. And whether it was in the shade or not is something else I'm not sure of it might have been recorded buy someone car or thermometer or have beeb recorded the normal way. I'm not the right person to ask seeing that I don't live in that governorate however I do know that in muscat it regularly goes above 50°C during the summer with a long sustained of over 46°c and 48°c at night however these temperature don't last very long and they usually dissipate in a day or two when it starts getting humid. The temperature kinda slides between extremely dry and hot to extremely humid and hot during the summer. I will try to look for the 60° report though and give it to you if I can find it.

I live in the UAE so let me tell you we are similar in many ways, it's the only country I have ever traveled to as I did many times by car, compared to other Arab countries oman is the best in terms of nature.

a Zanzibari with Omani heritage. Very informative video. I have passed through Oman many times but I hope to come back and know it even further. Oman has left a lot of its cultural aspects back in Zanzibar but I believe Zanzibar 's Helwa will always be better 😏.
