I usually hate music like this but this song honestly blows my mind. The instrumental is so creative and sounds so heavenly, the singing works over it very well with the voice James has too. The rhythm is also very satisfying
It's great to see James back at work. Love the song, and the video fits perfect. Nobody sips a cold pint quite like him. About to purchase the new CD from his site.
From the writer of the greatest protest song, This tune bends unique guitar around excellerated lyrics coming from a dude who appears to be on his third day. This is an excellent example of music being art, enjoy yourself, the chick, amazing, no wonder McMurty is concerned how hes gonna find her now. "I see the red light blinking in the middle of town"....
I agree he's the best song writer of our generation. If you don't agree I recommend you purchase any of his albums. My personal favorite is "where'd you hide the body".
Stupid comment. He's in the same generation as Bob Dylan. Surely you wouldn't claim he's better than Dylan. His songs are good but not particularly meaningful. I think John Darnielle is the best songwriter of Generation X. There was a campaign to make him the poet laureate of the US.
Dirk DIGGLER Of course music appreciation is subjective, but I doubt even James would put himself up with Dylan or even Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Lucinda Williams.... Only someone ignorant of the wealth of American songwriters would suggest that he is the best of our generation. I suggest you expand your musical horizons before making silly comments (although it does suit your pseudonym).
John Jones Listen to Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan, Honouring 50 Years of Amnesty International and see if you still think he's better than Dylan. I think a lot of people have only listened to a couple of Dylan songs and don't appreciate the huge body of work he's produced. I believe a straw poll of knowledgeable lovers of Americana music would put Dylan overwhelmingly as the best of our generation.
Kept thinking the girl bartender would show up at the end hitchhiking. He would pass her then slam on brakes and then we see her walking up to car in the rearview mirror....the END! Nice catchy tune!
For those who keep asking I'm pretty sure this is a "love" song for his real life girlfriend who was and maybe still is a bartender in Austin. The actress looks alot like his real lady, too.
great stuff.... i listened to / SAFE SIDE/ C`s of times - now this , fuckin close,THANKS JAMES. gun boy need [ CC ] i get the jest love it. is this e. bakersfield or west tx.?
+Nathaniel Glasgow Very possible. When James was with his dad (and not staying with his mother in Virginia) he often stayed at my folk's place when he was growing up and his father wasn't home (my great aunt was his caretaker for a while.) This was in Archer City in Archer County. A good 30 minute drive from Wichita Falls.
I first heard this yesterday, an hour into a five hour drive. Getting to the edge of the radio station’s reception area. I thought we were about to lose the station. So I know what you mean.
Dude really ? it was sarcasm & he knew he was a douche bag for not pickkin him up,then you can here him justify not picking him up ? or maybe you only hear this song ? try listening?
What a great guy. On and off the stage. I'm glad to have him in our family
Came for the thumbnail. Stayed for the song. Big thumbs up.
Saw James perform last night 10/21/22 in Whitefish MT…people go see him perform. He’s amazing live!!
Yes n so is Ray Wyle Hubbard
@@cesarnarro6013I enjoy Ray Wylie Hubbard too
A true musician and brilliant songwriter...Saw him in Belfast last night..outstanding gig.
Did you get the free I.P.A from behind the bar?
Its not bullet holes in the mailbox (too long in the wasteland) or anything but it will do. Coming in from Bloomington IN
I'm lovin' this guy's music. And that barmaid is HOT!
Best Songwriter of our generation.
The best song writer of our generation, obviously your not familiar with John Darnielle.
Alan Craigie Both good, take it easy….
I am, and: lol. Darnielle is cute, but he's nowhere near the wordsmith that McMurtry is.
True!
He is no Richard Thompson but he is really good.
Super song by James Mcmurty....it has that "Choctaw Bingo" kind of fun groove...even better after a couple beers "Or So"...etc!! Great Stuff !!
Thank you !!! :)
I usually hate music like this but this song honestly blows my mind. The instrumental is so creative and sounds so heavenly, the singing works over it very well with the voice James has too. The rhythm is also very satisfying
Someone should teach a creative writing class based solely on James McMurtry's lyrics.
It's great to see James back at work. Love the song, and the video fits perfect. Nobody sips a cold pint quite like him. About to purchase the new CD from his site.
Love his music...I got hooked when I heard staying on the safe side.
Another McMurtry Masterpiece ---- thanks for postin'.
Great song; have seen him perform it live the last two times; so glad it's on the new album!!!!

By "greatest protest song," are you talking about "We Can't Make It Here"? (Because if he's written a better one, you gotta spill!)

Alan Craigie He is better than Dylan , only my opinion.
"Stupid comment" is a bit childish. I'll stand by my comment.

Best line ever .
Washed my blood pressure pills down with a Red Bull.
That actress looks very familiar but there's nothing on the net I can find. Apart from that the song is really good stuff.
DANCE!!
James McMurtry looks a lot like Rev Ivan Stang, the founder of the Church of the Subgenius. Maybe Stang looks like James McMurtry?
Holy shit he does!!
highly entertaining
Yesere Bob...
This isn't the Continental Club is it ?
Certain parts of the verses remind me of I Am The Walrus and I love that.

Haha "Big as a baby's arm" . I Wonder if that was a nod to Pump up the Volume.
