- Following on from the "Berneray Regatta" video, this more sombre travelogue begins at the Beautiful Beasdaire beach and shows Berneray in its "mantle so green" . The track is by Capercaillie and features on "The Blood is Strong" CD and also on "A Prince among Islands." The song was composed by Duncan MacLeod of Berneray.
The tongue of the Gael, The landscape of the Gael....beautiful. Go rabh maith agat Karen, Go rabh maith agat Uistman.
Where on earth did they find 6 people to dislike this beautiful voice and song?
Beautiful song.I learned it from my father, who was then the Western Isles MP,and himself an accomplished tenor, with a passion for Gaelic music.Karen Matheson is wonderful to hear....always.Incidentally,the Bernera Bridge wax one of the first matters my father raised in his maiden speech in the UK Parliament...and campaigned for for many years. The opening of the bridge had the largest crowd I can ever remember in the Western Isles. This lovely version brings back so many memories.Thank you.
I regognized Karen Matheson's beautiful voice instantly. The video is wonderful!
20 +years ago I was getting over the hurt of a failed marriage. I had a tape in the car of an ep called "A prince among Islands " ( something to do with Prince Charles ). This was on it.. and I played it over and over and over again. It helped heal the hurt. Loved it then and I love it still.
many of us have been there
I have had the pleasure of being in the outer hebrides many times and I am so jealous of the quality of life they have ! bless them, once was in a wee village outside stornoway and speaking to the old lady running the shop was that was a corrugated tin shed & this hooray henry londoner with dickie bow time came in and asked for the daily telegraph , the old lady said " certainly would that be yesterdays or todays?" the londoner said rather abruptly" todays off course!!"
The reply from the old lady was " well you better wait till tomorrow till the ferry comes in !!!! " the londoners face was a picture ! heh, I,d move there in a flash if I could afford it
The house on the title page at the very north end of Berneray called Sandhill is where my grandfather Duncan MacLeod grew up. Leaving Berneray is a personal story for our family.
My mother was brought up in Lagachealla.
I had a teacher at primary school in Inverness who used to learn - or at least, tried to learn - her pupils some Gaelic songs, and this is one of them. Unfortunately, I never did learn much of any of them.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video.
This is beautiful and I can see why it would be hard to leave such a place.
Míle buíochas for this beautiful song sung by Karen Matheson.
She is a great singer having a great voice .
Karen, when do your tour in France??
The single track roads leading to a place called paradise on earth
Chuala mise an t-òran seo bho chionn ghoirid san fhilm "Dùthchas" air BBC iPlayer. 'S e beatha nan daoine à Beàrnaraigh - agus na seann dòighean nach eil ann tuilleadh - a th' anns a' chuspair. Film glè inntinneach ach brònach, dìreach mar an t-òran seo.
I heard this song recently in the film "Dùthchas" on BBC iPlayer. It was about the lives of people from Berneray, and the old ways that are no longer. A very interesting but sad film, just like this song.
Tapadh leat. 'Sann a Bearnaraigh a bha mo mhathair.
As with many of your offerings
. . . Just sublime.
Aw, I really want to go back. Haven't been up for about 3 years, miss it so much!
Who could ever dislike the lovely Karen Matheson's voice? Abair binn ''s a tha an guth aice...
Outstanding singing. Lovely song. ♪♫ ♥
@themikeymac55 Berneray. is a small island in the Sound of Harris between the Isle of Harris to the north and North Uist to the south ( to which it is now connected by a causeway) Latitude: 57º 42'N Longitude: 07º 10'W . It is famous as the birthplace of Angus MacAskill, the Cape Breton Giant (1825-1863), of Englishtown, Cape Breton Island.
Great song on leaving theme...doing a bit of local history on my own townland in midland Ireland where the population was around 200 in the mid 1800s ....now it's about 15.
It was 600 plus in the mid 1800
A very nice video with a beautiful Green grass that , along with the song, promotes Peace.
Grazie
Tom Aitchison Sheffield. A beautiful song sung so feelingly.

This is the land where Trumps' mother was born.
Donald Trump's mother was indeed born in the Western Isles of Scotland but not on the island of Berneray - and even if she had been it's not her fault that Donald has turned out the way h the way he has!
Yes she was born inthe village of Back nearStornoway
Omg 5 dislikes I despair for the human race
I do wonder why people click on something they are not likely to appreciate - I don't think they should be allowed to "dislike" without justifying themselves :-)
@@UISTMAN59 I don't think I have ever heard anything so beautiful and I was brought up on Welsh hymms
