This horse really turned into an absolute MONSTER as he matured as an older horse...He was always a very good horse and consistent...But he stepped it up another level..What a beast...So much respect for this little horse
what a masterful ride by Geroux and what an amazing performance by Gun Runner- he hauled butt all the way around the track: no let up, no breathers for him- he had to work for every bit of that victory. He deserves to be regarded as a great horse and of course he will go to the hall of fame. Congrats to GR and all of his connections.
One last signature solid performance from a great horse. It was kind of funny listening to the commentators before the race wondering if Geroux would risk tiring Gun Runner by using some of his speed early to get to the front. I kept thinking "he's got the speed to use". In the BCC, Gun Runner ran a faster mile than Sharp Azteca ran in the Dirt Mile, *and then* went another quarter-mile to win, against basically the same opposition as today. It was pretty clear that as long as Gun Runner was as strong today as he was in November, no one in this field would be able to wear him down, certainly not at 9 furlongs.
Gun Runner is a good horse but West Coast will probably end up being a better horse.....Don't forget Gun Runner is a year older that West Coast....West Coast lost by 2 1/2 lengths in this race and lost by 3 1/2 lengths in the Breeders Cup Classic...He would probably beat Gun Runner if the race was run a year from now...Anyway great race by Gun Runner and a deserving Horse of the year.......
Very true. West Coast is likely to have a successful year, and he could become a great champion on par with or even better than Gun Runner. But he isn't there quite yet, and I just never thought that three months was enough time for him to improve enough to beat Gun Runner if GR ran as well as he did in the BCC.
Wolfeson, that ended up being a good call by you....I was hoping West Coast would improve just enough and Gun Runner would regress just enough because of his outside post to make a difference in the race...In addition, according to Trakus, West Coast ran 38 feet more than Gun Runner in the Breeders Cup Classic race which I thought would be reduced in the Pegasus because of their respective posts positions.........West Coast did end up closing the gap just not enough to win.....I see Gun Runner ran a 130 Equibase speed figure in the Pegasus which is what he ran in the Breeders Cup Classic...Truly a push button horse....
Michel, I guess you forgot about that race in Dubai where Arrogate spotted Gun Runner about 15 lengths and then still beat him easily........Gun Runner is a nice horse but a world beater he is not.........You sound like all of those chromies (at least until Arrogate broke his little heart in the Pegasus) who acted like they never saw a good horse race before......
Gun run could have been retired after his 3 yr old campaign like most others bc he was already a grade 1 winner but they kept him running and watched him turn into a monster!
He was still a very green horse during that time. Those TC race winners turned out to be soft as Arrogate and GR emerged later in the year. I believe he really showed his maturity and what he was capable of when he took on older horses in the 2016 Breeders Cup Mile. I became a G-Runner fan and I think he lost only once after that to Arrogate in Dubai.
Well, if I had been able to bet, I would have gotten the exacta. :) Gunnevera's home field advantage got him in the bigger money. Gun Runner has a very sleek running style. With his head low, he cuts through the air like a plane. I was really surprised at the distance between the first two and the rest. wow
Ok, so to me, this race solidified how great Arrogate was. It shows that Gun Runner is a great horse. Now that Arrogate, in his prime, beat Gun Runner soundly, as well as California Chrome, in his prime, I think this just makes Arrogate a great horse. Having said that, in my opinion Arrogate can't truly go down in the books as one of the greats, not having stayed in the game long enough to prove enough. It's a bummer that owners only allow horses to run long enough to top out their stallion fees. We many never see the likes greats of the past because of it. I'm disappointed that Baffert didn't decide to run Arrogate at least one more time at any other track but Del Mar, since that track could just have been his Kriptonite! But now we'll never know. In his defense though, maybe it was better to retire having people think that Del Mar was the issue, instead of proving that he was just possibly just spent! Unfortunately, we'll never know. On the positive side, what a great last few years of racing! I got out of watching the races for a while, but luckily got back in when all the magic started happening😀. Who's next?
Mark O Arrogate should have been retired after the Pacific Classic, he was done. That horse lost his desire to compete after the DWC, it was obvious, IMO. I’m thinking Arrogate might not have been right physically; and he was only run for greed.
Once Gun Runner hot his prime Arrogate would not touch him..Arrogate just could not deal with sharp as a tack horses like Gun Runner/Collected/West Coast...Arrogate could not compete with them so he just quit
" It's a bummer that owners only allow horses to run long enough to top out their stallion fees. " That has hurt the fan appeal of racing more than anything else.
I do have to ask the question. Why was Stellar Wind put in this race. I love this horse but she seems pretty tough luck some times. After her dismal BC race last year why enter her here? Were they just filling the race and hoping to grab a share of the big loot? I think it's ridiculous to do that to her. She was an incredibly talented filly/mare and if they think she's still got it go after that older female division again. Her psyche doesn't need anymore bruising. EDIT: Looks like they retired her.
They had already announced she would be retired and that she'd be visiting American Pharoah. Coolmore had already purchased a slot and I guess they figured it was worth a shot. She wasn't in great condition coming into the Distaff, but she was training fantastic and in great condition coming in here. Chad Brown said before the race it was actually a shame he wouldn't get to have her longer than that, but it was always the plan to retire her after this.
yeah but west coast at the end had this burst of momentum and then got shy around gun runner's flank, you could see the horse forcefully back off. west coast had more stanima and power, but was a little untamed and uncontrollable by the rider
Gun Runner was pulling away from West Coast at the final furlong.Seems to me West Coast was the one that had less stamina and power as he fell back 2 1/2 lengths at the wire
TitanicMemory51 it’s great for three Chimneys Farm they bought him as a yearling not knowing what he would turn into 😂 but now he has a higher stud fee than most of their stallions combined
mrbigshot1986 he a gangster he pulled horse every day of the week for the Melbourne 10 all the media in England where hyping this horse up saying he back and all jamie Osborne is a fool 😂😂
Anthony, go watch the 2016 Travers and report back to the board on who was the better horse in his prime........not even close..... ruclips.net/video/PTnTeWVkK2c/видео.html
Gun Runner had yet to reach his prime in the Travers if you want to use that argument. Arrogate was a monster for 4 races over the course of 8 months. Yes, he was freakishly scary during that time if you had to run against him. His BEST race vs. Gun Runner's BEST race you have to give the nod to Arrogate. Ironically though, he failed to win North American HOY honors in any year due in part to his light racing schedule which is a big factor I think when comparing horses.
I'm not sure he got caught behind horses early so much as his jockey was intentionally keeping him off the lead. If so, I think that was just plain a mistake. He's a horse who does his best running from the front, and so once Collected was able to move across in front of him, he was beat before they even reached the first turn.
That probably was the thought process, and it was certainly a legitimate worry. With the benefit of hindsight, though, it probably would have been better to let him fight for the lead, and then find out whether he could go that extra furlong. Maybe he has enough left to hold off the challengers late, maybe he fades in the last furlong and ends up 4th or 5th, but it would have put him in the position to run his best. Clearly, trying to come from off the pace did not suit him.
This horse really turned into an absolute MONSTER as he matured as an older horse...He was always a very good horse and consistent...But he stepped it up another level..What a beast...So much respect for this little horse

Absolutely brilliant horse. Wish he could have run another year. Well done.
Really glad to see Gun Runner go out on top

Collected did push the pace so Gun Runner did not get a free ride.

It was a Hollywood-styled ending -- with several exclamation points.
Amazing horse. Was mo match with Nyquist and Exagerator in 2016 triple crown but improved considerably.
He was still a very green horse during that time. Those TC race winners turned out to be soft as Arrogate and GR emerged later in the year. He was 2nd in the Derby. That is hardly "no match".
Track announcer Peter Aiello with an unforgettable race call!

Arrogate vos también la tenés adentro. Gun Runner pa todo el mundo papá!

Gun Runner, a silent hero of the best horses in history.......
I do have to ask the question. Why was Stellar Wind put in this race. I love this horse but she seems pretty tough luck some times. After her dismal BC race last year why enter her here? GUN RUNNER! The son of Candy Ride! The Undisputed Horse of the year for 2017
yeah but west coast at the end had this burst of momentum and then got shy around gun runner's flank, you could see the horse forcefully back off. west coast had more stanima and power, but was a little untamed and uncontrollable by the rider
like we are going to believe what you say..lmao
Gun Runner was pulling away from West Coast at the final furlong.Seems to me West Coast was the one that had less stamina and power as he fell back 2 1/2 lengths at the wire
He made his move at the top of the stretch and it wasnt enough... Not even close..
Wow!
His name is Champion GUN RUNNER! He is by CANDY RIDE!
Espectacular la silla de Javier Castellano lástima el caballo no pudo más y llega segundo
It's good to see Three Chimneys getting a horse like him. Seems like Coolmore sucks up all the good ones
TitanicMemory51 it’s great for three Chimneys Farm they bought him as a yearling not knowing what he would turn into 😂 but now he has a higher stud fee than most of their stallions combined
Un verdadero campeón con sangre suramericana.
Stop talking about Arrogate. Gun Runner is a better horse. Period.
iheartpanic00 totally agreed🙏
Gun runner and justify would be a great matchup,to bad the amazing gun runners not racing anymore ,,
You cant be serious...Gun Runner would absolutely destroy Justify
GunRunner, easiest tri I ever hit. 10 with 2 with 6,7,9. Played it for $12.Hit the pk 3 but all favorites but still paid pretty good.

Nice!
CHAMPION GUN RUNNER!
gunnevera no tuvo chance
monster
Gun runner
I still will rate Arrogate a much better horse , unfortunately Arrogate was injured in the Dubai World Cup and Baffert still keeps running him ..
Finally someone who knows something about horses.......
The Dubai was an incredible 'exhibition' by Arrogate. Sadly, something obviously 'broke' in him. Never the same after.
kwgrid, no doubt...Baffert has a reputation of being hard on his horses.... he gets the most out of them but they usually don't last long......
Anthony, go watch the 2016 Travers and report back to the board on who was the better horse in his prime........not even close..... ruclips.net/video/PTnTeWVkK2c/видео.html

Sharp Azteca was dull AF!

Yeah, his trainer didn't give him enough of his vegetable juice...cheater
Great race, west coast disappoint local horses did better than him
You probably meant Collected. West Coast was a solid second.
Yh
Good horse, thuggish name...
Winx is superior to Gun Runner and Arrogate. The first of 23 in a row
Zenyatta couldn't do this
