Bad ideas with tow trucks, round two!

  • Ben @406garage3 needed some more firewood, and since now hauling firewood with my @NRCIndustries 40TB is a thing…. We headed over the mounted in a freezing fog ice storm to pick up a load of logs from the Willamette Valley and haul back to Ben’s house. Luckily there was also a Uhaul truck that needed to go to the repair shop, so I has some weight on my drive axles while going over the mountain pass, and then we had 11,000 pounds of logs for the trip back. The trip went really good considering the conditions, but we did slide right past Ben’s driveway on the ice while on our way back.

      My most impressive encounter with black ice was when driving home from shift on country roads through a forest area at 3 degrees above(!) freezing.
      Just at the end of trees section some drizzling rain started. At the next bend cars infront begann to slide.
      Kept distance, slowed down. Noticed lack of traction (Winter tyres, manual fwd), finally came to a halt.
      The car, though stopped and held by foot brake, begann to slowly slide sideways that tiny bend of the road surface to the curb!
      Street looked just a bit wet. One driver infront decided to get out but immediately slid and fell down.
      You could just not walk at all, might even have gone ice skating there.
      We all stayed in our cars, until, after half an hour, "Seasoning Service" (road maintainance spreading salt) came along, so we could go on...

    I don't know about the laws over on that side of the Atlantic, but studded tyres help a lot in conditions like that. Not like summer conditions of course, but makes it considerably better. In the part of Sweden I live in, "black ice" is extremely common during winter, so studded tyres are a must.

    • @2nd_of_3
      @2nd_of_3 Год назад +6

      The cost of studding those tires is not negligible. And the studds have to be removed by May. So either 2 sets of Expensive tires or use weight to compensate.

    • @VorpalGun
      @VorpalGun Год назад +8

      @@2nd_of_3 I know tire cost goes up with size (found that out myself when I got a bigger car with bigger tyres last year). In Sweden it is standard practice to keep two sets of complete wheels that you switch between. While I have seen Casey stud his Jeep tires here before, that is not a thing here. (I assume due to different regulations?)
      Besides you want different rubber formulations in summer and winter tyres anyway. A winter tyre is much softer, with less synthetic rubber. This helps it deal better with lower temperatures. So since you need two sets of tyres anyway, why not use studded ones for the winter set? Sure it is more expensive, but the difference is not that massive.

    • @user-cl9zf9wj9i
      @user-cl9zf9wj9i Год назад +2

      @@VorpalGun regional laws will apply, and these trucks usually use chains since “as required” since it’s not “the usual” to have these conditions.
      Where I am, studded are not allowed b/c it’ll destroy the road, but 3 hrs north and studded is just fine since they’ll have snow/ice “for months” at a time

    Speaking of ice, way back when I was living in Baker City, my friends and I made a weekend trip to Portland to see a Blazers game, and an overnight ice storm had hit. It was so slick that we had to get down on our hands and knees to crawl up a VERY slight incline from the hotel lobby to our truck. And the sun was so bright off the snow and ice that we needed to put on our shades to be able to see. I will never forget this.

It doesn't reflect light, so it looks like normal asphalt. But, it might be for maybe 100 yards, then clear, then maybe 200 yards later, more ice. Lethal. Best to stay indoors. At your destination lift bed after hooking surround chain to a separate chain hooked to either vehicle or solid pole etc . When you pull out from hitching post/ vehicle load will come off enmass.

    So. Now I know about bad ideas. Really thought you would do haulage like fodder, bulk construction supplies.
    The good things.
    A cabin to take the family to the lake, the sea side and the forest camp. Plus tow ya off-road truck.

    The wonder of editing, two minutes of video equals two hours of trying to unload. :-) Another reason that Bin needs to get his fork truck running! Fun video as always.

    Hello 🙋‍♂️from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
    yes those are dangerous and treacherous conditions .
    I think it would be easier if the sawmill put the logs on a wooden sled beforehand.
    this way they can collect all the tree trunks in advance and make a bundle on the sledge.
    and then you can pull the sled back with the winch. and by Ben let slide right off.
    but that may be too easy to think and I don't know if your winch can and may have that weight of course .
    thanks for the video .
    Sincerely, Hollandduck 🇳🇱🦆

    I’m pretty sure that’s when I drove through there. The black ice was no joke.

    I found out all about black ice in Germany. It wasn't a bad deal for me but when you have to go out and pick up the pieces of someone else's wreckage . No thank you.

    Guy on the bicycle will make a colorful splotch on the front of a car if he keeps weaving through live traffic like that and ignoring the signals.
