  • CN re-trucked 38 MLW RS-18s with A-1-A trucks and de-rated them to 1400hp in 1975 and 1976. They were used on lightweight branch lines and in yards mainly in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. This video shows them at work in yard and transfer service in the Halifax area. At about 9 m 30s two units are sling shunting two cabooses and in the final clip at 33:15 a single unit almost stalls. With sanders going, the wheel slip alarm ringing and the speedometer bouncing between 0 and 30 mph, the engineer closes the throttle one notch and then opens it again as he struggles to get his train up the incline.

    Looked like 1751 wasn't out of trouble yet as the air hose parted between her and the first auto rack at the end!
    They must have had to recharge the air and again get the train moving up hill all while the grade crossing was blocked.
    Very nice video! Those six axle trucks gave the RS-18's a big, brutish look, even if they were lightweights.

      Right at the end of the movie he was entering the three track yards at Autoport Dartmouth so he may have planned on moving some cars before pulling the cut into the yards. There is very little room in the yards and so it is difficult to avoid blocking road crossings for a few minutes while shunting!

    Yes it was interesting to see this old power at work, Yes to old MLW's. And great action with the two units kicking the cabs down the tracks! Often watched similar locomotives switching on the BCR in North Vancouver, with the crews kicking cuts of cars into the tracks under Lions Gate bridge.

      I have been fortunate enough to drive 1754 many times on the Salem & Hillsborough Railroad. See my website for photos of the units there. I also have some video footage if people are interested. Let me know at othen@eastlink.ca

    These are neat little units. The open autoracks are also really cool!

      The six wheel trucks with idler centre wheels made the units prone to slipping. The original RS-18 had much better pulling power. Yes it is a pity that vandals caused all autoracks to be enclosed.

    Brilliant footage. Im curious why one of the locos had EN and not CN on the front?

      My guess is someone was trying to be funny, added the third arm to the C. :)

    what kind of cabose is at 10:20?--seems powered.

      @david-othen  10 лет назад +5

      Both cabooses are being sling shunted - the engines pushes them after uncoupling and then stops leaving them to roll. They are controlled by the conductor who applies the hand brake using the wheel that tightens a chain attached to the brake rigging (that is the ratchet noise that you hear). The first caboose at 10:20 79697 is a Point St Charles (CN) built caboose and the second at 11:40 76626 is also a CN Point St Charles built caboose but it is a transfer caboose not for main line service.
